W ELCOME TO A STRESS-FREE ZONE. This is where the soothing sounds of waves lapping onto shore wash away the tension of urban hustle-bustle. It’s where owners of charming boutiques greet you with a warm word and a smile. It’s where you can spend the day exploring, discovering and playing. Or just soaking in the sun as the day unfolds to a more leisurely rhythm. Welcome to the Petoskey Area. A Michigan treasure.

PETOSKEY is known for its beautiful setting along Little Traverse Bay and its charming Gaslight Shopping District. The elegant Victorian architecture found in its homes and buildings serves as a reminder of its long history as a summertime destination.
HARBOR SPRINGS is a place where time slows down, inviting you to enjoy everything from swimming to dining, shopping to biking. The picture-perfect downtown is great for relaxing and watching boats in the harbor. The famous Tunnel of Trees always delights.
BOYNE CITY wraps around Lake Charlevoix - voted second best lake in America by the readers of USA Today. There are no strip malls here. Just a great mix of independently owned shops and restaurants where you’re likely to be personally greeted by the owner.
BAY HARBOR is a luxury waterfront community which includes an elegant upscale shopping district and the award-winning Bay Harbor Golf Club. The Great Lakes Center for the Arts opens in July and will add another world-class amenity to Bay Harbor’s list of attributes.
ALANSON is nestled on the bank of the Crooked River, a major link in the Inland Waterway of northern Michigan, which is celebrated annually during Alanson’s Riverfest. Take a stroll on the boardwalk along the river, or relax at Sanctuary Island.
BAY VIEW is a century-old community that takes you
back to a simpler, more refined era. It touts nearly 500 Victorian cottages, buildings and inns, and has earned designation as a National Historic Landmark. The Downtown Petoskey Trolley stops here in the summer.
WALLOON LAKE was once Ernest Hemingway’s summer home. Located on a glacial lake, this picturesque village is home to a beautiful hotel, charming retail shops and restaurants, and a marina. A village green beckons visitors to unwind and enjoy the surroundings.

DIVE IN.
THE BEAUTY OF OUR NAUTICAL APPEAL IS CRYSTAL CLEAR. LAKE MICHIGAN, INLAND LAKES AND STREAMS AWAIT. WHATEVER WATER RECREATION YOU WANT, WE’VE GOT.
8
C OME ON IN. THE WATER’S FINE. There’s something about being around the water that makes the problems magically disappear. Luckily, the Petoskey Area has water everywhere you look. Sparkling lakes that are perfect for swimming; Jet Skiing, paddleboarding or sailing; clear streams for fishing or kayaking; and pristine beaches for hunting Petoskey Stones, making sand castles, or simply catching some rays.
MOTHER NATURE
vacations here, too. LET THE EXPLORER IN YOU COME OUT AND PLAY. SCENERY THAT WILL SIMPLY TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY. IT’S WHERE THE GREAT OUTDOORS IS EVEN GREATER.
HIKE, BIKE OR SIMPLY GAZE SKYWARD. Just when you think the sights and sounds can’t get any better, you come to the next turn on the trail, crest the next hill, or go round the next bend on the waterway. The scenery here is so impressive, you truly do have to see it to believe it. The Headlands International Dark Sky Park is nationally renowned, and the paved, 26-mile Little Traverse Wheelway offers hikers and cyclists amazing vistas.
11
We make having fun
AN “IN” THING. YOUR VACATION KEEPS GOING WHEN YOU GO INDOORS. A WELCOME BREAK FROM CHAIN STORES AND MALLS. ALL THAT MAKES OUR AREA SPECIAL. EXCEPT INSIDE.
12
WE’LL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD INSIDE. When you want to trade the sun for a little A/C, or for those once-in-a-while times when the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ve got you covered. There’s lots to do indoors, too. Our resort town boutiques and shops are just steps from the beach; Avalanche Bay™ is a mammoth indoor waterpark; and the exciting Odawa Casino has a definite Vegas vibe.
Your taste buds will
CELEBRATE.
MORE THAN 100 RESTAURANTS, FINE DINING TO CASUAL. WINERIES AND BREWERIES THAT BRING GOOD CHEER. WHATEVER YOUR TASTE, WE’VE GOT THE PLACE.
14
HERE’S SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Many who visit here think our restaurants, breweries and wineries are a highlight of their stay. Wine lovers will want to explore the Bay View Wine Trail featuring ten wineries. Foodies will find menus full of traditional fare, as well as innovative dishes. Whatever you have a taste for, don’t leave without trying the whitefish. It’s fresh from the lake and an area favorite.
It’s like returning to
ANOTHER ERA. VICTORIAN CHARM AND ELEGANCE ALONG THE LAKE. SHOPS THAT ONCE GRACED COBBLESTONE STREETS. MUSEUMS DISPLAY THE AREA’S FASCINATING PAST.
IT’S AS IF TIME STOOD STILL. A visit to the Petoskey Area will take you back to a simpler, more refined time. As you walk through the elegant Victorian neighborhoods full of gingerbread homes, you can almost hear the horse-drawn buggies clattering down the streets. Museums chart our history from the Odawa Indians through the lumbering and ski industries. Tribute is also paid to Ernest Hemingway, who spent his first 22 summers on Walloon Lake.
17
You’ll find it easy to
STAY AWHILE. THERE ARE MORE THAN 2,800 ROOMS IN THE AREA. STAY IN TOWN, ON A GOLF COURSE OR A LAKEFRONT. CHOOSE A MODERN HOTEL, COUNTRY INN OR CONDO.
18
When you check into a place located exactly where you want, with all the amenities you want, your vacation is already on the upswing. In the Petoskey Area, finding that special place is a snap. And whether your day starts with coffee on the balcony, a splash in the pool, or a stroll on the beach, northern Michigan hospitality is always part of the package.

Stargazers, look skyward for an unbeatable view of the stunning night sky, free from light pollution, above northern Michigan. This 600-acre forested gem along Lake Michigan was one of the first 10 official International Dark Sky Parks in the WORLD. Comet-discoverer Patrick Stonehouse says, “Children from the cities who have only seen pictures of stars in books will be thrilled and inspired as they gaze at the thousands of bright, twinkling stars, silent and magically suspended in the clear, dark skies over The Headlands.” During daytime, 5 miles of marked nature trails (groomed in winter) guide hikers, cross-country skiers and photographers through the pristine, undeveloped park. Admission to the grounds is free and there are ADA restrooms available 24/7. In addition to monthly night sky programming at the Headlands, the Observatory is open for public viewing several times each month. Fees for parking, programs and building rental can be found on the Headlands website. Inland Waterway The 38-mile waterway has been called “One of the most beautiful small boat trips in the country,” and is Michigan’s longest chain of rivers and lakes. It begins at Crooked Lake (where boat rentals are available), then runs through Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullett Lake, Cheboygan River, and finally out to Lake Huron.
