Welcome TO THE
Show
W
hether you’re hearing the Petoskey Steel Drum Band for the first time, or you follow the band all over northern Michigan, you’re in for a treat. This unique musical ensemble will give you a highenergy performance that includes some singing and some choreography that packs a percussive punch.
The repertoire offers something for everyone and regularly leaves audiences wanting more.
“When we tell people about the band we tell them to expect the quality of seasoned professional musicians with the charm and energy of high school students,” said Roy Harvey, a volunteer and vocalist with the band. He says the quality is the result of many rehearsals and the dedication by the directors and the students. Most of the students in today’s band started playing steel drums when they were in the sixth grade.
The band was formed by Director Barry Bennett in 1997 with 12-students and nine sets of drums. (Today’s band members weren’t even born when the Petoskey Steel Drum Band originated). The band was, and continues to be an extension of the instrumental music program at Petoskey High School. Today’s band features more than 40-students and around 30-sets of drums. Bennett estimates the overall value of the instruments exceeds $150,000.
The music you’ll hear will range from traditional steel band calypso music to classical, and from Celtic to pop standards.
After the show, you’re invited to meet the band members and take a closer look at these unique musical instruments.

The Petoskey Band Boosters are honored to be the benefactors of this year’s Diamonds & Denim Dinner, Dance and Auction presented by the Rotary Club of Petoskey. This gala event is in its fourth year and benefits a different community entity each year. “Being chosen by the Rotary Club of Petoskey is a big honor for the band program,” said band booster president Alicia Webster. “It gives us an opportunity to make some much needed capital investments in the band that are beyond the reach of our traditional fund-raising efforts,” she added. The band plans to use the proceeds from Diamonds & Denim to purchase another, much needed triple-axle trailer to help haul band equipment to festivals and marching band competitions. If additional funds are available, they also hope to update their aging drum line equipment for the marching band. Diamonds & Denim is a night of good food and entertainment with silent and live auctions. This year’s event will be held at the beautiful Lange Center at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club in Bay Harbor on Saturday, Sept. 30. The public is invited. Tickets are $75 per person or a table of eight for $800. To reserve individual tickets or a table, or to donate auction items, go to www.PetoskeyRotary.org.

On the Move
Keeping up with the Petoskey Steel Drum Band is no easy task. This summer, the band will log more than 2,500 round trip miles performing at community concerts and festivals around the state. Their performances go outside of Michigan as well. This past winter, the Petoskey Steel Drum Band made its ninth trip to New Orleans to perform at Mardi Gras. Band directors, volunteers, and parent chaperones take junior and senior band members on this trip every-other year. It’s become a great tradition for the band, and something that parade revelers in New Orleans eagerly anticipate. The band performed in three of the larger Mardi Gras parades hosted by the Krewes of Endymion, Bacchus, and Orpheus. This past November, the band made its third consecutive appearance at the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival Parade in Chicago. Being invited back to the parade is a tremendous honor for the band, and a thrill for the students to perform at one of the largest parades in the Midwest.

Can you imagine how much work it must take to manage 40 kids, through countless rehearsals and more than 25-performances each year? On top of that, there is travel to coordinate, instruments and sound systems to care for, and trucks and trailers to maintain. It’s a big job every year for the band directors and volunteers who make it all happen. The band directors are quick to credit the volunteers and parents who provide so much support, but the parents laud the band directors who go above and beyond every year to provide amazing experiences for their children. “I don’t know how they do it,” said Mary Paquette whose son is in the band. “While the steel band is touring, they’re also coordinating marching band camp and developing their marching band show for 250 kids,” she added. Beyond the hard work, the program also requires a tremendous amount of fund-raising. Although it is an extension of the instrumental music program at Petoskey High School, the Petoskey Steel Drum Band does not receive funding from the schools; they are 100% self-sustaining. Funding for the band comes from performance fees, CD sales, and fund-raising projects like this program you are reading. They also accept donations from those inclined to make a contribution to the band. Look for the contribution jar at the merchandise table at any performance, or you can send a tax-deductible donation to the address below.

THE
Instruments
The word “drum” in steel drum is a reference to the oil drums that were commonly used to make the earlier version of these musical instruments, which originated in what is now the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Steel drums, or pans as they are commonly called, are now manufactured to more precise musical specifications by such companies as Panyard, Coyle Drums, and Pan Tuner. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band features four different voices of pans. The lead pans are single drums that you see in the front row. The leads carry most of the melody with around two octaves of notes. Right behind the leads are the Double Seconds. They are twin sets of pans that also can play two octaves. They have more of an alto voice. The Cellos are usually visible from the audience in the back right. They are sets of four pans in the tenor voice. You’ll see the bass pans in the back left and each set has six drums with a total of 18-notes. What might be called the rhythm section in other bands is called the “engine room” in Trinidad and Tobago terminology. The Petoskey Steel Drum Band’s engine room has a drum kit, bass guitar, congas, and other percussion toys.
