ne thing we know from being in real estate is that people are never just buying a home. You don’t go on a real estate website and search for the perfect little bungalow from Maine to California. You find a zip code, or a lake, or a “neck of the woods,” and go from there. And once you house-shop through two or three communities, those communities help you make a decision. The one you ended up buying didn’t have those charming arched doorways, but it had two lots and was walking distance from the coffee shop where that lady was so helpful with directions. It ends up partly being the house of your dreams, and partly the feel and fit of the community. We feel it, too. Six years ago, one of our agents made a suggestion. He suggested that each agent give 1% of each and every one of his or her commissions back to our communities that have made us successful. Since then, each January the agents decide where to put their 1% for the year, and every quarter a check is drawn up and given away. So far this little independent office has given our community more than $70,000. Sometimes it’s been pretty scary. Realtors might go for months without a commission, but the bills keep coming in. They save when the market is strong and pray when it slows down. But not one has ever reneged on the 1% commitment – not a single agent, not since the first donation. Giving back 1% of each commission was one of the ideas that was suggested. “It wasn’t my idea, but I loved it. And as an owner, I couldn’t be more proud or supportive of our team and what we’ve been able to accomplish,” he said.

Eta Nu’s Dressed for Chill program, which supplies winter outerwear for elementary school students each year, has taken a special place in the heart of Pat O’Brien & Associates. “Dressed for Chill has a huge impact on kids in our district who just wouldn’t be able to afford the necessities of winter,” Pat said. “They provide gloves, coats, boots and hats for students that would otherwise more than likely go without.” Pat O’Brien & Associates has been giving its third quarter donation to Eta Nu’s Dressed for Chill for four years now. Eta Nu always dropped off a jar for donations, asking the office to leave it on the counter for client donations. When the donations process was eventually opened for agent vote, Dressed for Chill was high on the list. What makes it so special? “The tears from the women at Eta Nu when we give them a check. It’s very moving.” Better yet, warm fingers, toes and ears on the children who are our future. 3

Good Neighbor’s Food Pantry

Kathy is a behind-the-scenes kind of person – she doesn’t do things for the glory, but because it’s a privilege. It’s why she’s involved in the Good Neighbor’s Food Pantry of Boyne City. Don Toffolo Michigan Dyslexia Institute

Don’s a reader. And his wife, Gail, is a teacher who specialized in instructing students with dyslexia. So he is drawn empathetically and personally to the Michigan Dyslexia Institute – particularly the Harbor Springs affiliate that serves Charlevoix, Emmet and Cheboygan counties. “My wife’s involvement – being a teacher for the past 15 or 16 years – make me realize how many people are affected directly or indirectly by dyslexia,” Don said. He said because of governmental cut-backs there is a huge need for private donors to non-profit educational agencies. Anne-Elise Mair, director of the Michigan Dyslexia Institute in Harbor Springs (the main office is in Lansing), said that unlike popular perception, dyslexia is not a matter of seeing letters in the wrong order or words backwards. The word “dyslexia” is borrowed from the Greek and means “difficulty with words.” The symbol-sound relationship of letters does not come naturally to the student affected by dyslexia. The instructors work with students one on one, using a multi-sensory approach to teach them to read, write, spell and comprehend the English language. Donations can be allocated for scholarships for education or screening, or can be general donations which will be used for operations. “Supplies – even keeping the lights on!” said Anne-Elise. Don knows that the world of books is opening up for these students. That is eminently satisfying to him. And if you’ll excuse him, he’ll get back to the book
