From the Wheelhouse

Whether a boater from birth or someone who joined later in life, passion for the water is addictive and contagious. This passion is what sets boating apart from many other recreational activities. Lifelong boaters and new members alike are hooked on the water and the experiences that we have while out on it. This magazine is proof of this love for the water, and I hope that while you are longing for the lake this winter this publication makes the wait seem a little bit shorter!

I am proud that this past summer’s Women in Boating class saw the 1000th student complete the class since I began instructing in 2006. I see this same passion for the water and boating from the ladies that attend the class, no matter what their boating skill level. They are attending the class for several reasons, to be better captains or first mates, to learn basic boat handling, how to properly secure the boat to the dock, and many other reasons. The one thing that they all have in common is that they and their families love and value their time on the water.

In these classes I always share my experiences and love for the water, which for me started at age 12 with a boat on Lake Erie. We commuted each and every weekend the 125 miles each way to the lake. We then made the most of the weekend by skiing, fishing, and cruising on the lake. However, what I most cherish are the memories and friendships that were made on the water.

This past summer I had the pleasure of spending a week in the North Channel with a small group of friends. It reminded me of the reasons why we all boat. We spent the week with virtually no agenda

other than to admire the beautiful scenery and to enjoy each other’s company. We had a fish fry one evening, spent time at anchor in the Benjamin Islands, cruised to destinations that none of us had ever explored, and generally relaxed and put our phones away. It took me back to my early days of boating when being on the water was what I most looked forward to. And I came back refreshed and energized.

As many of you know, we have a new group of owners that have partnered with the Walstrom family in the ownership of Walstrom Marine. What united this group of investors is a shared love for the water and a passion for boating. This new group has encouraged and supported our team by providing them with opportunities to experience time with friends and family on the water. This past season three boats were made available for the team to enjoy, all at different locations. I have received countless photos and compliments on how much this meant to our team. We’ve not only had new boaters who have taken the opportunity to use the watercraft and experience our unbelievable Michigan waterways, but we’ve been able to provide an outlet for our seasoned boaters on the

team to explore a new area or get on the water between boat ownership. Whatever the situation may be, I take great pride in being able to offer these opportunities and experiences to our team. Giving our employees this opportunity to live the boating lifestyle and make memories on the water is something I believe sets us apart from other employers in the industry.

I would be remiss to not mention how truly proud I am to be a part of the best team in the marine industry. Our team’s dedication to supporting our customers is truly what makes Walstrom Marine different. From our office team, to the technicians that service your boat, to the dock hands that assist you in one of our marinas, our team is committed to helping you spend as much time on the water and create as many lifetime memories as possible.

I would also like to personally thank all our customers for your business and your trust. I look forward to seeing you on the lake!

ALL IN THE FAMILY

CATHY AND ELYSIA WARD

Working out of our Harbor Springs location are Cathy Ward and daughter Elysia. Cathy works in Accounts Receivable and has been with Walstrom Marine for over two years. Coming to work and having that family feel is what keeps Cathy motivated. During the summer months, our Harbor Springs location hires around 15 seasonal employees to work as dock hands, help with boat detailing, and man the fuel dock. Elysia has been seasonally employed with Walstrom Marine for the last two summers. Elysia is currently enrolled in the Nursing program at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey. Thank you to Cathy for the positive energy you bring to the company and to Elysia for being a dedicated summer employee!

ASHLEY CRIBB AND JORDAN FAJARDO

Ashley came on board with Grand Bay Marine in 2021 with experience from a small boat shop in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In total she has been in the boating industry for 6 years and wears many hats to ensure customers are having a positive boating experience. She enjoys spending time with her family, bear hunting, and exploring the Upper Peninsula. Ashley’s son, Jordan, started working his very first job this summer as a boat detailer in Charlevoix. Jordan attends East Jordan Public Schools and is in the 9th grade. During the summer Jordan detailed boats, helped with landscaping and assisted with whatever else was needed around the facility. Thank you Jordan for entrusting Walstrom Marine for your first job and Ashley for being a part of building the growing team in Charlevoix.

TRAVIS AND ERROL BECKETT

Errol and his son Travis received a warm welcome to Walstrom Marine when Traverse Bay Marine was acquired in June of 2020. Errol was a major part of the former Traverse Bay Marine operation since 1988 and continues to be at Walstrom Marine. He has, at one time or another, held the title of salesman, service technician, service manager, director of service, and general manager of Traverse Bay Marine. As he nears retirement, Errol is now our go-to person for customer deliveries and pickups. Errol’s passion for boating was instilled at a young age as he grew up on the water fishing with his father in Little Traverse Bay. The passion for the boating industry continues as Errol’s son, Travis is now a fulltime technician at Walstrom Marine. In 1997, during middle school, Travis started at Traverse Bay Marine and continued throughout high school learning the ins and outs of the dealership, following in his dad’s footsteps. Travis’s dedication to his craft is evident through his multiple certifications with our manufacturers including Tiara Yachts, Yamaha Motors, Volvo Penta, SeaKeeper, and a Master Technician Certification. He has continued to grow, now serving as a Lead Technician within the Walstrom Marine organization. The Beckett family’s passion for boating continues to be passed down through generations, now shared with Travis’s six children and Errol’s other three grandchildren, creating a legacy of love for the water and the marine industry.

HI AND PETE STOVER

Who doesn’t know Hi Stover? Hi was recruited by Walstrom Marine and is now working out of our Bay Harbor location. For over 17 years, Hi has been a prominent presence in Bay Harbor. When he first started, his office was in the same building as the retail store downtown, Propellers.

As Bay Harbor continued to grow, Propellers also went through multiple renovations; at one point Hi was working out of a tent. Propellers eventually closed, but the office location remains the same, with a beautiful view of the harbor.

As Hi was putting in the miles walking, he was finally awarded with his own gem car, in which he now gives tours and can easily move about Bay Harbor. To end this, Hi was awarded our first “Mr. Walstrom” award in 2022, which exemplifies outstanding dedication and spirit to Walstrom Marine. Pete, who is Hi’s son, has been in the Harbor Springs location for a year and half.

Walstrom Marine actively recruited Pete to become our first detail supervisor. Pete handles the organization of customers and employees to ensure boats are glimmering in the summer sun. During the summer months, Pete has the added responsibility of the summer seasonal employees. Pete’s dedication to our detail department has been instrumental in its growth.

MIKE SIMPSON AND NOAH UMULIS

Mike has held a sales position within the company since 2018, starting at Grand Bay Marine and continuing at Walstrom Marine following the acquisition of Grand Bay Marine in 2022. He graduated from Grand Valley University and lived in Grand Rapids for 15 years and Colorado for 2 years. He moved back to his hometown of Charlevoix in 2018 and started his career in the marine industry. Mike takes pleasure in connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and assisting them in creating cherished memories with their friends and family. He loves the outdoors and is an avid hunter and fisherman. Mike is thrilled to expand the range of boat inventory choices available to customers as Walstrom Marine’s growth continues. Noah, Mike’s step-son, is a 9th grader at Charlevoix High School and started his first job at Walstrom Marine in Charlevoix this summer. His work days were spent detailing boats and helping out around the yard. Noah loved working at Walstrom Marine so much, he said he will be back next summer! Mike is thrilled to have the opportunity to expand Walstrom Marine into Charlevoix and become more involved in the community.

SCOTT STEPHEN WITH JOCELYN AND BAILEY

This year Scott Stephen reached a tremendous milestone as he celebrated 20 years of employment with Grand Bay Marine! Scott has been an instrumental part of our Traverse City team as our gel, fiberglass, and engine technician. Scott is a wealth of knowledge specializing in hydraulics, electronics, and diesel engines. Scott’s favorite part about working in the marine industry is training and mentoring young technicians and fiberglass specialists, including his two daughters, Jocelyn and Bailey. Jocelyn, who is currently enrolled at Cornerstone University, received multiple scholarships including the Michigan Boating Industry scholarship, an academic scholarship from Grand Traverse Academy, and a track and field scholarship. She has been working summers at Grand Bay Marine since she was 15 years old – everything from titling and registration to shadowing her dad in fiberglass and gelcoat work. Bailey also joined the crew this summer, following in her big sister’s footsteps and learning the ins and outs of the boating industry. She is the class president at Grand Traverse Academy and president of the Junior National Honors Society. Bailey plans to work the summers at Grand Bay Marine, continuing to grow her skillset.

BRIAN JOHNSON AND BRANDON HYATT

Both Brian and Brandon Johnson, father-son duo, work out of our Harbor Springs location. Brian is a marine technician, and has been a dedicated employee since April of 2019. Walstrom Marine is proud of Brian for being Mercury Master Certified, and working towards his Yamaha Master Certification. Brandon works as our Harbor Master and is always on the go during the summer months, ensuring our customers are taken care of as they come and go from our Little Traverse Bay marina. Brandon is going on two years of employment with us, starting when he was 17 years old!

KYLE AND ROBERT OLESON

Kyle, our star of the promotional videos on social media, was hired in 2012 as a salesman for Grand Bay Marine. In 2019, Kyle was promoted to sales manager and has made efforts to improve the sales process, including training in sales strategies along with creating engaging social media content. Kyle loves being in a career where he helps enrich people’s lives through boating every day. Rob, Kyle’s father, has been with Grand Bay Marine since 2014, working as a seasonal delivery driver. In addition to deliveries, Rob also helps with boat shows and goes above and beyond for our customers as he knows the value that boating brings to families. Being around water is in the Oleson’s family blood. Kyle’s grandfather was a boater and fisherman from the Glen Lake area and now Rob is sharing the passion of boating with his son and grandchildren.

STEVE AND JOSEPH WOLFE

Working out of the Harbor Springs office is our salesman of over 7 years, Steve Wolfe. Steve can often be found in our showroom where he showcases our range of boats to customers, or out on the docks providing hands-on demonstrations. Steve’s son, Joseph, has worked at the Harbor Springs location for the past two summers, running the front desk on the weekends. Joseph is currently a freshman at Lake Superior State College and was a hockey goalie throughout his high school career. Steve said working at Walstrom Marine is by far the best decision he has ever made, solidifying his reputation as a trusted salesman.

from Rivertown

Good things come to those who wait, especially to those who had the foresight and patience to put themselves on the waiting list for heated storage in Cheboygan.

Boating in Northern Michigan’s beautiful waters is a favorite pastime for many, and over the past several years, our storage waiting list grew to well over 175 people! Each year there is some turnover with boats selling to new owners who live out of the area, or those who are traveling the Great Loop. For some, Walstrom Marine is only a one-year stopover along their journey. We can usually accommodate between 15 and 25 new storage customers each season. Typically, when I call to ask someone on the list if they are still interested in storing with us, the response is an excited, “Yes!”

We are happy to announce that the wait is over for many people on that lengthy wait list! In the spring of 2023, we broke ground and began constructing an additional heated storage building, adjacent to Building #3. This newly completed building provides over 50,000 square feet of floor space and allowed us to store 65 more boats. It brings our total heated storage space to an impressive 139,000 square feet.

out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the massive addition stretches nearly all the way to the south, east and west property lines of our riverfront lot. With a two-panel door measuring forty feet wide by thirty-seven feet tall, the higher profile vessels are stored inside. The building itself has blocked our previous entrance from State Street. Access to our facility is now strictly from Coast Guard Drive.

Our crew is busier than ever now that the building is complete, with more boats to service. Even with all the additional boats to haul for storage this year, our yard crew still managed to have them stored safely inside our heated buildings by the end of October, which was quite an accomplishment! For our valued customers, it is increasingly important to schedule any desired service early in the season so the work can be completed in a timely manner. Our service team has expanded this year, and it is always good to welcome new faces and talent to the Walstrom family. We now have a total

of fifteen employees in Cheboygan: five in the office and parts department and ten technicians handling maintenance, electronics installations, upgrades and repairs, fiberglass, gel coat and paint work, cleaning, waxing, and custom jobs. People sometimes ask if we are open all winter. Winter is our busiest season because we must complete the numerous service requests prior to the spring launch. There is always much to do!

Walstrom Marine continues to grow, and in Cheboygan our footprint has now filled our lot along the river. While we lost some of our outside storage, we remain able to store most of the boats belonging to our previous outside customers. A waiting list will continue to be maintained to fill future vacancies, as we continue to receive many inquiries about storage.

Stop by to check out the expansion. Its stately presence along the river will serve us, and our customers, well into the future. It was definitely worth the wait!

Once again, the Bay Harbor community had a great year. The winter was seasonably quiet with less snow than usual. Many of the retail shops and a few of the restaurants went into winter hibernation, waiting to wake up invigorated in the spring. Each year, in late April through early May, the Village at Bay Harbor comes alive with all of the businesses opening up for the summer season. 2023 was a particularly good year with every retail space available in Bay Harbor filled and ready for business.

On Memorial Day Weekend we welcomed Joe Gallagher to the Walstrom Marine Bay Harbor Yacht Sales office. Joe came to Bay Harbor with a strong boating background, starting his career at Gull Lake Marine and then going to our Traverse City location for a few years. Joe then moved to our Charlevoix M-66 location to assist in getting that location launched as a new Walstrom Marine property, and later transitioned over to Bay Harbor. With

Joe’s parents being Bay Harbor residents, Joe is a great fit for our Bay Harbor Yacht Sales office, and is eager to help match our customers with the boat of their dreams.

The Bay Harbor Lake Marina was at full capacity yet again, with a waiting list for available seasonal slips. On Father’s Day weekend, the annual Bay Harbor Boat Show was back with the largest display of boats and yachts yet. Walstrom Marine participated with our biggest display ever, and as a result had our most successful Bay Harbor Boat Show to date! The addition of Grand Bay Marine and the Regal Boats brand figured prominently in our success. We are all excited about this new relationship.

The weekend after the Bay Harbor Boat Show saw the return of the Vintage Car and Boat Show. Bay Harbor is blessed to have so many collectors with auto industry roots that this event is truly exceptional in its depth and breadth.

being much larger than just the Bay Harbor resident community. Add to that numerous weddings and a full summer entertainment schedule at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, and is clear to see why Bay Harbor is such an important part of the Northern Michigan lifestyle.

September saw the return of the successful Bay Harbor fishing tournament. The quality and quantity of the sportfish available in the Little Traverse Bay area are a testament to the Michigan marine industry’s support of the fishing lifestyle. In particular, the local Clean Marina community sets the tone for a clean and safe marina environment, with Walstrom Marine being the first Clean Marina in the state.

Mid-September, Bay Harbor Lake Marina welcomed back the Antique and Classic Boat Society for their International Boat Show. This year’s event hosted 150 of the country’s most desirable collectable boats. We look forward to another eventful, exciting year in Bay Harbor. If you ever find yourself in the area, be sure to stop in the showroom and say hello!

THE CHARLEVOIX WAY

Lake Charlevoix is one of the top boating destinations in our nation, drawing those in search of crystal-clear waters, freshwater fishing, and water sports of all kinds. Nestled along its shores are three charming towns—Charlevoix, Boyne City, and East Jordan— along with the smaller villages of Ironton and Horton Bay. Each one of these communities has something special to be discovered.

Ranked as Michigan’s third-largest inland lake, Lake Charlevoix offers a pristine 56-mile shoreline and reaches a depth of 122 feet. This generous expanse gives power boaters and sailing enthusiasts a relatively easy body of water to navigate, particularly when prevailing northwest winds deter adventures on Lake Michigan. The Department of Natural Resources has ensured ease of access with no fewer than 9 launch ramps surrounding the lake with plenty of parking for even the larger vehicles.

Walstrom Marine has long been a fixture in Charlevoix County, representing renowned boat brands such as Tiara and Chris Craft. In 2018, we established a sales office in downtown Charlevoix. In late 2022, our influence grew with the acquisition of Grand Bay Marine,

allowing us to have a full-service location on M-66, just south of Charlevoix’s city limits. With our proximity to East Jordan and Boyne City, we can assure service, whether at a marina or a private residence, effectively keeping our valued customers on the water.

Walstrom Marine now offers a wide array of boats, catering to diverse boating needs. The selection includes esteemed names like Tiara, Regal, Sea Ray, Chris Craft, Pursuit, MJM, and NauticStar among others. We also carry pontoons and tritoons with brands of Crest, Starcraft, Godfrey and more.

Please feel free to contact us at our new 6472 M-66 North Charlevoix location or our sales location at 105 East Clinton Street, downtown Charlevoix.

Boating comes in all shapes and styles. Whether boating on a yacht, express cruiser, sport boat, deck boat or pontoon, we know that every experience is an opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime.

At Walstrom Marine and Grand Bay Marine, the customer experience is more to us than just the product that you are purchasing. It is about those moments spent with loved ones, taking in all of the beauty that the water has to offer and being free from the constraints of everyday life. In our most recent history, we reflect on amazing ways that our customers have experienced the joys of boating individually and together, via wake surfing and our customer rendezvous on Power Island.

THE WAKE SURFING LIFESTYLE

Welcome to an exhilarating world full of adventure and thrill-seeking opportunities! Wake surfing brings enthusiasts closer to nature in a way that few other water sports can match. The sensation of gliding across the water’s surface, propelled by the boat’s wake offers an intimate connection with the surrounding environment. As riders find their balance and carve through the water, they become attuned to the rhythm of the waves and the gentle caress of the wind. This immersion in the elements creates a sense of tranquility and freedom that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Wake surfing isn’t just for adrenaline junkies or experienced athletes. Unlike

some extreme water sports, wake surfing is accessible to individuals of various skill levels. Beginners can start with larger boards to gain confidence, while seasoned riders can progress to smaller boards for more advanced maneuvers. This inclusivity makes wake surfing an ideal family activity, allowing everyone to participate and enjoy the water in their own unique way.

At its core, wake surfing is a social activity that brings people together. Whether you’re out on the boat with friends or family, or you’re meeting fellow enthusiasts at the lake, the camaraderie that forms around this sport is undeniable. Sharing the excitement of learning new tricks, cheering on fellow riders, and celebrating successful runs creates bonds that extend beyond the water. This social aspect makes wake surfing a perfect way to strengthen relationships and build lasting memories.

At Grand Bay Marine and Walstrom Marine, we believe that there is no better way to engage in the surfing lifestyle than through the various models of the Regal Surf System, including the LS9 Surf model.

THE

HOLLAND

Walstrom Marine is on the move again with our newest location in Holland, Michigan at Yacht Basin Marina.

Situated on beautiful Lake Macatawa with easy access to Lake Michigan, we are just 11 miles north of Saugatuck and 22 miles south of Grand Haven.

In March 2023 we acquired a new office within the Marina which we designed and built from the dirt floor up. We now have a beautiful space from which we can offer our customers an exceptional experience.

In addition to our sales office, the crew at Yacht Basin Marina can offer our clients slips, in/out rack service, maintenance, storage and service on your vessel. This is a wonderful partnership and we are excited to have an office adjacent to this highly reputable marina in Southwest

Michigan. On the docks, just in front of Lolo’s restaurant and Tiki Bar, you’ll find a dedicated slip where we are able to showcase our boats in-water, which makes it easy for us to set up sea trials for our clients.

With a combined 47 years of sales experience, Dan Khodl and Jeff McGeorge are a team certain to continue Walstrom’s commitment to be an industry leader in marine sales and service. Specializing in new and used boat sales, our Holland location has a large inventory of in-stock boats on site from brands like Pursuit, Regal, Chris Craft, NauticStar and more. Our Holland team also prides themselves on their brokerage skills, and their ability to put buyers and sellers together for a smooth transaction. We have the knowledge and experience to help our clients navigate the wide array of boat styles that works for your specific needs and location.

Whether you are an ‘old salt’ experienced boater or just getting started, our Holland team has the resources and know how to help you get out on the water worry free in Southwest Michigan.

Updates from ALGONAC

The Algonac Harbour Club team has been busy over the past year giving their space some much-needed upgrades. After Walstrom Marine acquired AHC in 2022, the team saw a huge need and opportunity to refresh the space, with the goal of elevating the experience for all the members who call AHC home. Read on to learn about some of the exciting projects we’ve been working on, and plans for future improvements.

MARINA ENTRANCE IMPROVEMENTS

The entrance to the Marina, while green and plush, had several trees that were overgrown and taking over the landscape. These trees also posed a safety hazard, causing blind spots and making it difficult to clearly see around the entrance. We reworked this area, adding new Karl Foerster Grass and some smaller greenery that should look fantastic come spring, and now it is open enough for everyone to see without obstructions. While doing this landscaping work, we realized that our security building was in need of improvements. We decided it was best to rebuild, increasing the footprint and making the space more useful. Our new security building makes it easier for our patrons to find their way and know what parking areas are available.

MAIN BATHROOM REMODEL

What started off as plans for a quick cosmetic upgrade quickly turned into a complete gut job. As we started to demo the space, our findings suggested we take the space down to the studs and start from scratch. This discovery ended up being a great thing, as we were able to address some failures and ensure the space was set up to last. The bathroom overhaul has resulted in a beautiful new space, complete with all new fixtures and tile, proper drainage, upgraded lighting, and - most importantly - heat and air conditioning! We’re so pleased with how the space turned out and can now offer access to bathrooms year-round for our customers’ convenience.

CREATION OF AN EMPLOYEE LOUNGE AREA

We value our team and recognized that adding an area dedicated to them would improve their experience as employees of AHC. We saw an opportunity to convert an unused area of our space, formerly simply a cement “catch-all” space, into a multi-use area for parts, services, offices, and this new employee area. The employee lounge gives all of our employees a space to take a break and congregate as a team. Plus, it houses a full-size fridge for our popular popsicle stash! Feel free to stop by for a popsicle and to help replenish the stash.

ADDITIONAL UPDATES & UPGRADES

We’ve also implemented some smaller yet significant changes around our marina that add huge value for our team and customers. One notable improvement is the replacement of the malfunctioning door connecting our main building to the parking area—an issue persisting for years. A new addition to our equipment fleet is the Yard Boss Trailer, capable of hauling boats up to 60 feet and 80,000 pounds. This trailer is set to play a crucial role during the upcoming spring launch season. Enhancements also include the addition of air conditioning in the transient bathrooms, upgraded marinawide WIFI, and even the introduction of a slushie machine at the fuel dock!

The future is looking bright here at AHC, and we are working on a list of even more improvements for the upcoming season. We don’t want to spoil any surprises, so we won’t list them all here, but make sure you spend a few minutes at the pool and walking the grounds around the marina. We are lucky to have some of the best members in SE Michigan, and we want to make sure that they enjoy their summer home as much as possible. If you find yourself in the area, please make sure you stop by to say hi!

With the azure waters of the Great Lakes as their playground, these boating enthusiasts embark on a series of exhilarating boating trips each summer, transforming ordinary weekends into extraordinary adventures.

BHYC CRUISE CLUB SETS SAIL

Cruising Adventures around the Great Lakes

Geographically, Bay Harbor offers an ideal location for boaters to set sail to nearby ports for quick day trips or carefully planned, elaborate excursions. The memberdriven Cruise Committee works hard all year to plan several boating rendezvous. At each destination, the committee organizes activities and dining experiences unique to the specific lakeside town for the group to enjoy, while always leaving plenty of time for relaxation and leisurely exploration.

In Summer 2023, the group kicked off the season in early-June with a visit to Northport, Michigan, followed by a trip to historic Mackinac Island later in the month. July saw not one, but two thrilling excursions to a group favorite, Traverse City, which never disappoints with its abundance of delicious food, wine, artistry, and recreation. The cruising season ended in

August with a grand finale trip adventuring across Lake Michigan to scenic Door County, Wisconsin, meeting up in charming Fish Creek. On average, 40 attendees among 15 boats participate in these cruises, each creating friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

Every boating season brings adventure, camaraderie, and themed extravaganzas for members of Bay Harbor Yacht Club’s Cruise Club. With a diverse range of destinations and events, members explore the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Great Lakes region, all while forging lasting bonds and creating treasured memories on the open waters surrounding Michigan. This group’s spirit of adventure and community ensures that each summer brings new horizons and cherished traditions, and we cannot wait to see what’s to come in 2024.

FEATURED NON-PROFIT

Giving BACK

Walstrom Marine believes supporting non-profits offers our company a chance to make a positive impact in our communities and society at large. We have found that these collaborations foster teamwork and employee engagement, enhance organizational culture, and provide valuable learning experiences for

our staff. By supporting and volunteering with local non-profits, we can not only give back in an impactful way, but also contribute to social causes that matter to our organization and our employees. This contributes to a more vibrant and socially responsible business environment.

The Manna Food Project

The Manna Food Project’s purpose is to feed the hungry throughout Northwest Michigan. We procure the best food we can to provide a balanced diet for our neighbors in need across Antrim, Charlevoix, and Emmet Counties.

Manna is an Affiliate Food Bank of Feeding America West Michigan. Together with our nearly 45 partner agencies that purchase food through the food bank, we distribute over one million pounds of food annually to those in need throughout the 3-county region.

Every week Manna hosts two food pantries to serve people supplemental food. Manna prides itself on the variety of food we offer to help feed our neighbors,

including utilizing our local farms. Manna not only wants to feed those in need but nourish them with the healthiest options possible. Manna strives to provide fresh produce, protein, and dairy at every pantry.

Our Food 4 Kids backpack program provides children with meals over the weekends and during the summer months when they are not in school. Manna partners with 30 preschools and elementary schools across our counties to offer this weekly program to any family in need. In the current school year, Manna is expected to distribute over 60,000 backpacks to kids.

Manna also rescues food from local grocery stores and farms daily. The organizations reserve food for Manna that can no longer be sold but is still good to eat. This food is then redistributed to our partners or handed out to our neighbors that same day. Last year, Manna rescued over 300,000 pounds of food from going into landfills.

To make all of this happen, Manna relies on volunteers for every aspect of daily operations. Manna had 111 volunteers in 2022 and recorded 4,243 hours of time volunteered; that is equivalent to two fulltime staff. We value and appreciate all the hard work that is done by our dedicated volunteers.

Walstrom Marine staff has donated time each year to help us feed people in need. The amazing staff at Walstrom Marine volunteered countless hours to help assemble backpacks, restock food, and repack bulk items. We enjoy having businesses like Walstrom Marine that appreciate giving back to the community. Together, we can ensure that no one goes hungry.

Quotes from volunteers:

“Manna is a fantastic non-profit organization that has helped in so many ways over so many communities and it is a great thing. It is so fulfilling to be able to know that we are a part of helping that happen. Also, working with co-workers you are steady working and talking and getting to bond and get to know them in a different way than you would at work. We laugh, carry on, joke and race to see who gets the most bags done as a competition within. In the end, knowing that we are helping for the cause. We will continue to donate our time. I think everyone should.”

-Nikki Landon, Service Advisor, Walstrom Marine

“It’s great to get out of the office for a couple of hours and give back to the community while connecting with Walstrom team members from different departments. I’m grateful for Manna food bank and their backpack program that gifts meals to school children that otherwise may go without meals once they are away from school. Volunteering with my teammates from Walstrom Marine is a special way to give back to our community and strengthen our work team.”

-Robert Rogier, Boat & Yacht Sales, Walstrom Marine

“Volunteering at Manna has been a great opportunity to help the local communities by being hands on, as well as learning the processes and avenues in which they do so. Everyone at Manna is extremely friendly, knowledgeable about their program and willing to answer any questions you may have. It also tends to be a great deal of fun getting to work with our co-workers in a different atmosphere, chatting, joking and having a breather from the Marine business temporarily. I am very fortunate to work for a company that allows us the time to volunteer.”

-Laura Hevron, Parts Coordinator, Walstrom Marine

EMBRACING THE BOATING LIFESTYLE

A Recap of 2023 Events

Women in Boating: Celebrating 1000 Participants

This past summer, we celebrated a remarkable milestone as we successfully educated and empowered 1,000 women through our Women in Boating classes. At Walstrom Marine, our unwavering passion lies in equipping women with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the open waters independently.

Our President, Tom Ervin led the way by sharing his extensive knowledge while also instilling a sense of camaraderie and empowerment amongst the participants,

giving them the confidence they needed on the water.

Our Women in Boating classes are meticulously designed to create a nurturing and informative environment where women acquire essential boating skills and freely ask questions. Tom covered the fundamentals of boating, including docking techniques, safety, and on-water maneuvering. Each woman in our class successfully learned how to dock the boat by utilizing joystick technology and mastering the art of reversing the vessel into the slip.

Whether women were embarking on their boating journeys as newcomers, aiming to refine their skills, or simply seeking a welcoming community, our Women

in Boating program offered a valuable opportunity. We hold a strong belief that knowledge serves as the foundation of confidence, and our steadfast commitment is to empower women, ensuring they feel comfortable while navigating the Northern Michigan waters.

A reflection of the boats and experiences that made our staff passionate members of the boating community.

My dad always had a boat. My grandfather always had a boat. We didn’t camp, we didn’t ski—we boated.

Our summer vacation involved leaving St. Clair Shores and embarking from Jefferson Beach to Tobermory. If the weather on Lake Huron was favorable, we ran it all in one day. If the weather wasn’t good, we would stop in Bayfield, ON. Bayfield has the best candy store in the world, so I would always pray for a bit of wind after we left the mouth of the St. Clair River and entered Lake Huron. The rest of the vacation was set with Killarney, ON as the home base. We would venture out from Sportsman’s Inn to Little Current, Indian Head, Bae of Finn, and others.

Those were our summers. They were filled with sunsets, mosquitoes, Canadian black flies, and lots of BBQ dinners. Glorious locations that can only be imagined by going there and seeing it yourself.

Once I reached the age that I had to pay

BOATS that BUILT US

for the gas in my car, it was almost kismet that I took a job onboard a dinner cruise boat out of Jefferson Beach Marina– the Infinity. This is the boat that taught me patience, mechanics, humor, and leadership. We cruised the heart of the Great Lakes, and Lake St. Clair in the summer, and took her through the Erie Barge Canal, down the Atlantic Coast, to the Florida Keys in the winter. The stories that boat could tell! I was lucky to have my sister work on the boat with me in the Keys, and my brother on the boat with me in Lake St. Clair. Boating was surely a family affair!

At one point, I was offered a position that would take me across the world to Italy to build a boat. That was one of the most exciting and rewarding positions in my career! To see a boat built from the hull up, watching the motors be set into the hull, the Canadian burled wood walls be set and finished, all while enjoying Italy and immersing myself in the Mediterranean culture. I didn’t do well with the ‘siesta’ time that Europeans take every day for their 2-hour nap. The locals came to know me

as the American girl who would rollerblade up and down the ‘lungomare’ (waterfront street) while everyone else was relaxing and getting ready for the second part of the day. I am planning a trip back to Italy next summer and hope that the magic of the town is still the same. (And no, I am not taking my roller blades this time.)

From Italy back to US waters, I found myself on various large yachts cruising from Puerto Rico and the islands up and down the East Coast. I spent many winters in Ft. Lauderdale working on refits before I found myself in a yacht club in Naples as a Harbor Master.

Boating is something that is in your soul. You feel it. I often joke that you could blindfold me, put me on a plane, and wherever we land, I can tell what part of the country we are in by the smell of the salt or fresh air. Many friendships have been made and adventures taken over the years. I believe if you get the chance you should always take it.

My earliest memories on the water were made at my family’s summer home on the shores of the Les Cheneaux Islands, located on Lake Huron in the Upper Peninsula. In the LCI, we use boats like cars. Our friends’ and family’s cottages are scattered around the 36 islands that make up the archipelago, and most are only accessible by boat. Smaller, runabout boats rule the waters in this area. When I think back over the years I’ve spent navigating the channels of the islands, a few boats come to mind.

First and most noteworthy is Kasota, a 21' 1937 Chris Craft Utility. My greatgrandparents bought the mahogany boat from EJ Mertaugh Boat works in Hessel, the original Chris Craft dealership. It has been passed down through the generations ever since. 87 years and countless hours on the water (and of upkeep and maintenance) later, it still has a designated slip in our boathouse. It’s been so special to see my niece and nephew now taking turns “driving” Kasota, as they are now the fifth generation aboard the boat. At the ripe age of 12, when I received my boater’s safety license, my parents allowed me to use our 15' Boston Whaler as my runabout boat throughout my teen years. My best friend had a cottage right across the channel, so you’d frequently catch us zipping back and forth to each other’s houses, anchoring at the local sandbar, or cruising to town for some ice cream in the “Little Whaler.” If the sun was shining, we were on the boat, and boy were

we having fun. Twenty years later, not much has changed–some of my greatest friendships began on the water.

The Les Cheneaux Islands are home to the largest Pearson Ensign sailboat fleet in the country–Fleet 31. With nearly 70 colorful hulls calling the islands home, races are hosted weekly throughout the summer from the Les Cheneaux Yacht Club. Our Ensign, Second Wind, is the second Ensign my immediate family has owned over the years. Windstar was the first, hence the origin of our current boat’s name. I fondly recall racing weekly during high school and college, taking the position of foredeck on the crew, racing alongside my family and friends. While I no longer actively participate in the races, I love to head out on another boat to watch the action from the water. Who knows, maybe I’ll come out of retirement one of these years!

Last but not least, the boat I hold most dear to my heart is a 1994 Century Resorter that we endearingly call “The Green Boat”—you guessed it—because of its hull color. At just 17', it is rather small and rides low to the water, but in my opinion is the perfect boat for navigating the islands’ intricate channels. Whether it’s cruising to town for dinner, heading to a friend’s island house for a campfire, floating in the bay stargazing at night, or watching the excitement of an Ensign regatta from the water, these days if I’m in the LCI, you’ll likely find me aboard the Green Boat.

Once you become a boater, it sticks with you. There is something cathartic and meditative about spending time on the water, no matter what boat you’re on. To me, it’s rejuvenating and fuels the soul, and is something that will be a part of me forever. These days, I feel lucky to be working in an industry where going on a boat ride is part of the job description!

The crystal-clear waters of Gull Lake, Michigan, tucked away in the northern tip of Kalamazoo County, is where I was lucky enough to call home. It’s there, back in the eighties, my father started up a small shop called the Hobie Sports Center, thus beginning a lifetime of boating for me and my brother. I have vivid memories of riding with my dad on deliveries and weekends filled watching my parents sail in competitions.

Eventually, the Hobie Sports Center evolved into a full-service boat dealership, selling Cobalt, Crownline and JC Tritoons, amongst many others. My first boat was a solid blue Crownline 176 bow rider, and boy, did I tear up the lake in that thing! If you saw a little, blue blur go by you could be sure it was me, and I only know one speed – full throttle. But my ties to the lake weren’t all fun and leisure, there was hard work involved too, with countless hours spent running the fuel and rental dock and cleaning boats, helping the bookkeeper, and eventually assisting my dad in sales. And I couldn’t be more grateful for all that experience and knowledge as not only has it advanced my career but has led me here to beautiful Harbor Springs and Walstrom Marine.

While my adventurous spirit starts to wane as I age, my love of boating and the water will never waver. My move to Northern Michigan has opened a whole new world of boating. I will never tire of seeing a brand-new Chris Craft unwrapped or a Pursuit shining on the showroom floor. I will always cherish my days spent on Gull Lake in my little Crownline, or tubing behind the JC Tritoon with my family while holding on for dear life. The classic robins’ egg blue hull of an old Boston Whaler will always bring a smile to my face, just like spotting the brightly colored sails of a Hobie Cat still does to this day. So many boats that built me, so many memories I will carry forever.

Your home is more than a building. You need more than a builder. First thing we build... TRUST.

NYYC AMERICAN MAGIC'S JOURNEY

Sailing Towards the 37th America’s Cup

In the world of sailing, few events capture the imagination quite like the America's Cup. It is a competition that seamlessly combines innovative design, cutting-edge technology, sailing mastery, and passion. NYYC American Magic, representing the New York Yacht Club, stands at the heart of this exhilarating narrative.

If you have not been closely following the high-stakes world of competitive sailing, it’s time to cast your gaze upon NYYC American Magic. The team is one of five challengers determined to win the America’s Cup and return the coveted trophy to American shores.

Continue reading to discover the team’s accomplishments in the past year and what lies ahead as they prepare for the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, Spain, scheduled for late 2024.

AMERICAN MAGIC A Year in Review

FALL & WINTER 2022

Training in Pensacola

For NYYC American Magic, the past year has represented a steadfast quest for excellence. In September 2022, as the autumn leaves fell, the team restarted their sailing program in Pensacola, Florida. Their mission? To prepare Patriot, their faithful AC75 yacht, in line with the new America’s Cup regulations. Here, on the quiet waters of Pensacola Bay, the team honed their skills, embraced the consistent winds, and chose between the bay’s flat waters and the more challenging waves of the Gulf. As US sailing aficionados understand, Pensacola Bay provides an ideal training environment not only for the art of foiling monohulls but also for sailing in general.

As Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and Executive Director of NYYC American Magic, reflects, “Pensacola Bay or the Gulf of Mexico provides you with a different feel and a different venue to develop your foiling monohull. The fact that there aren’t a lot of boats out there and we’re not dealing with a lot of traffic, we basically spent days out on the bay by ourselves. It’s phenomenal.”

MARCH 2023

Unveiling the AC40, America

March 2023 marked a significant milestone for NYYC American Magic. They unveiled their first AC40, christened ‘America,’ in Pensacola, signaling the team’s readiness to elevate their skills.

But what distinguishes the AC40 from its larger sibling, the AC75?

AC40 VS. AC75

A Tale of Two Boats

The AC75, boasting cutting-edge design and technology, takes center stage in the America’s Cup. These hydrofoiling monohulls can reach speeds close to 55 knots, delivering a captivating display of skill and innovation. Unlike the AC75, the AC40 doesn’t compete in the America’s Cup (Challenger Series or Match); instead, it serves as a testing platform. The AC40 plays a pivotal role in the team’s preparations, offering a space for developing foils and sails, refining tactics, testing strategies, and finetuning crew synchronization. It enables the team to experiment with new technologies and designs, which can subsequently be integrated into their racing yacht, the AC75.

Tom Burnham, Head Sailing Coach for NYYC American Magic, explains, “The AC40, primarily our testing boat, comprises a team of four. However, when we get the AC75 in the water, it will involve a team of eight. It’ll be a combination of the power source in the team, the cyclors, powering the boat with hydraulic energy, as well as the sailors who trim the sails, fly the boat, and steer it. Therefore, the makeup of the team in the AC75 will be different from what we have with the AC40.”

SUMMER 2023

Sailing in Barcelona with AC40 Magic

As summer arrived, the team embarked on a new chapter in their journey. Barcelona, Spain, became their playground as they launched their second AC40, named ‘Magic.’ Sailing in this iconic city presented unique challenges and opportunities, offering a glimpse of what lies ahead in the America’s Cup.

Two-Boat Testing Program

Summer ushered in another pivotal phase in the team’s preparations. NYYC American Magic initiated a two-boat testing program, underscoring their commitment to learning lessons from AC36. This strategy isn’t merely about sailing two boats concurrently; it’s a rigorous process that pits ‘America’ against ‘Magic,’ fine-tuning race strategies and tactics, maximizing their chances for success in the America’s Cup.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Victory in Vilanova

Preliminary Regatta

In September 2023, American Magic clinched victory in the inaugural AC preliminary regatta in Vilanova, Spain. This milestone showcased the team’s expertise and readiness to challenge the other sailing teams. The victory was a testament to the team’s unwavering dedication, meticulous planning, and the fruits of their tireless labor.

As Olympic Gold Medalist and Helmsman Paul Goodison said, “Victory in Vilanova was more than a win. Having such

America”, NYYC American Magic’s AC40 sails for the first time in Pensacola Bay, FL

a strong regatta was a reflection on the whole team, everybody in the base who did such a fantastic job helping prepare the sailors for this event. And it’s a real testament to the power of the group and the strength of the team as a whole.”

SAILING AHEAD: THE NEXT 12 MONTHS

Continuation of the Two-Boat Testing Program

Looking to the future, NYYC American Magic remains unwavering in its commitment to relentless improvement and its two-boat AC40 testing program. This approach not only sharpens their sailing and racing skills but also aids in foil and sail development programs. It represents an ongoing pursuit of perfection, extracting every possible advantage as the team prepares to face the fierce competition of the America’s Cup.

Boat Building, Design, and Sailing Programs

The next 12 months will witness a seamless fusion of AC75 boat building, design refinement, and extensive sailing programs. Every component and system of a brand new AC75, the team’s racing yacht that will take center stage in the America’s Cup, will be meticulously crafted and rigorously tested.

LAUNCH OF THE AC75

The Racing Beast

In Spring/Summer 2024, the team will unveil their new AC75, the pinnacle of sailing technology, poised to compete in the America’s Cup. This cutting-edge yacht represents the culmination of their efforts, designed with a singular purpose: victory in the America’s Cup match race series.

In the words of Tom Slingsby, Helmsman for NYYC American Magic, “We are not privy to the activities of other teams; instead, we center our attention on our own program. We have faith in our designers, our team, and our design tools to deliver an exceptionally fast AC75 boat. We trust our chosen course of action, and the current phase of our journey marks our unwavering belief, not only in the entire American Magic team but also in the correctness of the path we have chosen.”

SEPTEMBER 2024

America’s Cup Challenger Series

The penultimate goal of this extraordinary journey will be the America’s Cup Challenger Series, scheduled for September 2024. It’s here that NYYC American Magic will compete against other elite challengers for the right to face the defender. The objective is crystal clear - to

secure victory in the Challenger Series and earn the privilege of challenging the defending champion, Team New Zealand, in the grand finale.

OCTOBER 2024

The America’s Cup Match

If all goes according to plan, NYYC American Magic will find themselves in the ultimate showdown, racing against the defender in the America’s Cup Match on October 12, 2024. It would represent the culmination of years of hard work, innovation, and unwavering dedication. The entire sailing world will be watching to discover who will win the 37th America’s Cup.

In the words of Doug DeVos, Team Principal, “You can observe the leadership within the team and the alignment that everyone shares, signifying that we are all in this together. We’re going to be as creative as possible. We’re going to be committed to excellence. We’re going to get everyone focused on our common goal. And we’re gonna go to Barcelona and leave it all out on the water.”

As we gaze into the future, one thing is evident: NYYC American Magic leaves no stone unturned in its quest for America’s Cup glory. Their dedication, innovation, and unwavering resolve propel them forward. The next 12 months promise to be as thrilling as the last as they pursue their dream of bringing the America’s Cup back home to American shores.

CEO SPOTLIGHT

An Interview with NauticStar’s CEO Fred Ross

1 COULD YOU SHARE SOME INSIGHT INTO NAUTICSTAR'S HISTORY AND YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE COMPANY?

NauticStar was established back in 2002 as a family-owned enterprise. Initially, it was the brainchild of a father and son who designed and built boats. In 2017, the company took a different direction when it became a publicly-traded corporation.

During that transition, I believe it lost some of its unique character in the corporate environment. In September 2022, I had the opportunity to purchase NauticStar. The company’s history and legacy piqued my interest, as well as its reputation as the number one selling boat in the bay boat segment. I’m genuinely excited to bring it back to its family-run roots, ensuring a strong connection with our valued customers.

Just months after purchasing the company, our Amory, Mississippi factory was hit by a category F4 tornado that devastated our plant. While the tornado was an absolute tragedy for the community, I saw a silver lining– an opportunity to revamp the plant to streamline our processes and maximize efficiency. We’re now rebuilt in a way that makes us stronger than ever, so that we can craft the best, top-quality boats in the market.

2 WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM NAUTICSTAR IN 2024?

In 2024, NauticStar will introduce two fresh models: the 274 Bay and the 332 Offshore. In addition, we plan to continue

to come out with one to three new models each year over the next few years until we have a solid, diverse lineup of boats. While some models will be phased out, they will be replaced with newer, better versions with the ultimate goal of creating the best product lineup possible.

We’ve listened to our customers’ feedback, and are making updates to our options list and introducing several features as standard. We made the transition to stitched upholstery, which is a huge upgrade when compared to standard pressed upholstery. This feature will now be standard on all Nauticstar models. Additional items continue to be improved in our vessels for an overall better fit-and-finish. Looking to the future, we hope to add a dual console line, with models in both 24' and 28' lengths.

Improving quality is also something that we are honing in on this year. We have brought in an independent company that is well known in the industry for quality control, and implementing processes for production facilities. Their weigh-in will allow us to really focus in on the quality of the finished product.

We have also recently undergone a complete rebrand as a company, which includes not only a new and improved logo, but a set of solid, defining principles and beliefs that will guide our company as we move into the future.

3 WHAT SETS NAUTICSTAR APART FROM ITS COMPETITORS?

Value is our number one differentiator. You get the most boat for the money when you purchase a NauticStar. While other manufacturers offer great boats, they often come with a premium price tag. We offer high quality boats, at a more entry level, and in turn, accessible price range. Additionally, our distinctiveness lies in our diverse product range. We produce boats for various markets and purposes, encompassing freshwater and lake boats for family recreation, such as skiing, fishing, and swimming, bay boats for shallow water and near-shore fishing, and offshore boats for both family recreation and offshore fishing. This diversity sets us apart from competitors and allows us to cater to a broad spectrum of boating needs.

4 COULD YOU TELL US WHICH NAUTICSTAR MODEL IS CURRENTLY YOUR FAVORITE AND WHAT MAKES IT STAND OUT?

My current favorite has to be our new 33-foot model. It’s an ideal fit for my boating at Lake of the Ozarks, effortlessly handling the often-turbulent waters. Lake of the Ozarks is notorious for being one of roughest inland lakes in the country. This 33' model has a well-perfoming hull that handles big water exceptionally. The combination of speed, dryness, and a smooth ride is particularly vital on the weekends when the lake can be quite

volatile. Plus, the joystick steering makes docking a breeze.

5 WHY ARE NAUTICSTAR BOATS A GREAT CHOICE FOR BOATING ON THE GREAT LAKES?

NauticStar boats are suited for the Great Lakes due to their versatility–they are kind of like the Swiss army knife of boats. Whether you’re in for a day at an inland lake, or out on rough waters of Lake Michigan, our boats’ adaptability will have you covered. Most of our boats are trailerable, so you’re able to move your boats from lake to lake, and explore the various waters of Michigan. From swimming to fishing, watersports or various water activities, our deck boats, dual console models, crossover boats, and offshore vessels are meticulously designed to handle the ever-changing conditions of the Great Lakes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

6 COULD YOU SHARE YOUR FAVORITE BOATING DESTINATION WITH US?

Lake of the Ozarks holds a special place in my heart. My family has a long

history there, and I’ve been visiting the lake since my childhood. I have fond memories sitting on the end of the dock, watching boats go by, dreaming about someday owning one of my own. Since 1987, I have owned properties and boats at Lake of the Ozarks, and my passion for boating has only deepened. Over the years, Lake of the Ozarks has continually grown and improved, offering a wide array of activities for families, including rafting, skiing, coving out, fishing, tubing, fun runs, and more.

7 WHAT ASPECTS OF THE FUTURE OF BOATING ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

I’m particularly eager to witness the advancements in technology in boat manufacturing. Features like self-docking and self-driving capabilities hold great promise, providing enhanced safety and convenience once fully tested and ready for consumers. Additionally, the shift towards electrification, catering to environmentallyconscious customers, is an exciting development in the boating industry. In the long term, I would love to continue to acquire more marine-specific companies.

We were able to invite our customers aboard the vessel to experience the boat firsthand, and to get out on the water with us in our own backyard.

The 48 LE is a perfect blend of classy comforts, entertainment features, and adventure possibilities. Alongside Tiara’s signature high-end elements, it boasts unique touches such as a larger dropdown terrace for improved water access, an expansive salon that opens with sliding glass windows, and a sunroof to

Conquering the Lake with BOATS

Michigan native Matt Purvis may be new to our Pursuit Family, but he’s far from new to boating.

Having previously owned boats from other manufacturers, Matt chose a 2022 Pursuit DC 326 to take his family on their next phase of adventures on Lake Charlevoix. We spoke with him to find out what he loves about his new DC 326 and what Pursuits his family has planned on the Lake.

DC 326: THE PERFECT FISHING AND FAMILY BOAT

The Pursuit DC 326 is a flexible allrounder designed to go fishing far offshore or entertain your friends and family on the water equally as capably. Just like all Pursuit Boats, the DC 326’s ample deck space is thoughtfully laid out, offering generous seating and storage spaces, all within the distinctive aesthetic of our Dual Console Boat series.

The DC 326 features a fully integrated fiberglass hardtop with a full-height tempered glass windshield as standard, for maximum protection from the elements. But if you prefer to feel the air rushing through the cockpit while underway, simply open the windscreen’s central folding panel. With that panel open, you gain easy access to the DC 326’s forward bow seating area, which offers plenty of room for friends, family or crew to relax whether underway or at anchor.

The DC 326’s features and finishes proved to be irresistible to the Purvis family when it came time to upgrade their boat.

A COTTAGE ON THE LAKE

The Purvis family—Matt, wife Becky and daughter Kayla–resides in Spring Lake, Michigan. Kayla is currently a sophomore at MSU. When it’s time to escape their daily grind, the family retreats to their cottage on Lake Charlevoix, where they do the majority of their boating on their new DC 326.

BROWSING BOATS

When it came time to upgrade their current boat—a 24' model from another well-known manufacturer and the second boat they’d owned from the same brand— the Purvis family automatically first looked at a larger model from that manufacturer. However, following a prompt by Walstrom Marine, it wasn’t long before Matt’s attention was drawn to the DC 326. “Robert [Rogier] from Walstrom Marine had a customer’s boat that was just a year older, located in Bay Harbor, so we made the trip to check out the boat and see all of its features and benefits in person,” Matt recalled. “We immediately liked the Pursuit because of its versatility and because of the high quality fit and finishes throughout.”

As with so many of our customers up north, Matt explained that the windshield proved to be a deciding factor. “The windshield is a feature that we particularly enjoy given that we are boating in northern Michigan, because it substantially extends our season. We can boat into the Fall because it feels like an enclosed cabin area,” he said.

The Purvis family was also drawn to the DC 326’s social spaces. “We like to go out boating with lots of friends and for this, the DC 326 is super comfortable because it has a lot of social seating.”

THE WALSTROM DIFFERENCE

Robert from Walstrom Marine worked closely with the Purvis family to fully customize their new boat with their choice of colors and features. “The whole process with Walstrom Marine was fantastic, there was excellent communication throughout,” Matt affirmed.

Of course, upgrading from a 24' boat to a nearly 35' boat can be intimidating for anyone and Matt was no exception to that, but Walstrom made it easy for the Purvis family, as Matt noted. “Robert

introduced us to their Captain Kurt, who gave us a complete overview of our new boat and helped us captain it from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix. Captain Kurt made the handover super easy and even gave us his cellphone number for any questions post-delivery. Robert is now also a personal friend!”

NOTHING BETTER THAN PURSUIT

Now at the tail-end of his second summer season with his DC 326, Matt shared some highlights of his time with the boat thus far. “I can’t imagine a better boat for day boating, fishing and family trips,” he said. “It handles Lake Charlevoix perfectly, even when there’s a chop. We like to go to Beaver Island or even up to Petoskey

or Harbor Springs which we can now do worry-free.

“Every time I get on the boat, I love it,” he continued. “It’s easy to operate, especially given its outboards and bow thruster. The power from the Yamaha 300hp V6s is great and the electronic steering is super solid and seamless.”

Next summer, the Parvis family plans to take their DC 326 to Mackinac Island and to the South Manitou Islands. If that sounds like the sort of adventure you and your family also deserve, contact Walstrom Marine today to find the Pursuit Boat model that’s perfect for your needs.

THE HISTORY OF TIARA YACHTS

A Michigan Founded Yacht Manufacturer

From day one, Tiara Yachts has been led by a passion for boat building that was instilled by company founder Leon R. Slikkers. From wooden runabouts, sailboats, and fishing boats to day yachts and express cruisers, the vessels may have evolved over the years, but Tiara has remained true to its commitment to superior craftsmanship, manufacturing an American made product, and its dedication to creating exceptional experiences on the water.

1955 1962 1960

With a desire to make and create, 18-year-old Leon Slikkers left the family farm in Diamond Springs, Michigan in 1946 to join his brothers Gerald and Dennis at one of nearby Holland’s largest factories, Chris-Craft.

Leon’s love for boat building blossomed at Chris-Craft, where he was assigned to the joiner department to make cabin tops. Known for his high and unyielding expectations, Leon quickly worked his way up to the position of assistant foreman by the age of 24.

During a company-wide labor strike in 1952, Leon and fellow Chris-Craft employee Jason Petroelije decided to start building their own boats out of the Slikkers’ family garage. Leon and Jason built—and sold— around 10 outboard-powered runabouts, made of sheet plywood and averaging 15-feet in length, with painted hulls and varnished mahogany decks, while waiting to return to work.

Though the promise of a steady paycheck and ability to support his growing family were Leon’s reasons for initially returning to Chris-Craft, continued work

stoppages motivated Leon to take his financial security into his own hands and venture out on his own.

By January 1955, a 27-year-old Leon left Chris-Craft and sold his home to raise the capital needed to start building wooden runabouts under the SlickCraft name. Leon made 35 boats during that first official model year in 1955, constructed in a rented workshop while living with his family in the small apartment upstairs.

With a keen eye for spotting industry trends, Leon began experimenting with fiberglass almost immediately, working with his ever-expanding network of boat builders and local tradesmen. By 1960, SlickCraft was building fiberglass hulls in-house and had phased out its line of molded plywood models.

During the 1962 model year, Leon moved production to a 29,000 square foot former skating rink on South Washington in Holland. To keep up with increasing demand, SlickCraft headquarters would

continue to grow and expand over the next decade, including to a plant on Brooks Ave., just one block away from today’s manufacturing facility.

The rise in popularity also attracted the attention of larger conglomerates, and in September 1969, after much thought and prayer, Leon sold SlickCraft to AMF Corporation. As part of the agreement, he would remain as president of the SlickCraft division and would not build powerboats for

five years as part of a non-compete clause.

AMF did not meet the high standards Leon had built his SlickCraft brand on, and he soon parted ways with the corporation to begin experimenting with a fiberglass sailboat design. On February 18, 1974, S2 Yachts, Inc., Leon’s second company, was born with his eldest sons David and Robert by his side.

With the help of family members, friends and others, S2 Yachts blossomed quickly as its sailboats became well known in cruising and racing circles. Once the non-compete clause expired, S2 Yachts re-entered the powerboat manufacturing industry and its new ‘Tiara Division’ was created.

At the same time, construction began on a new 72,000 square foot manufacturing facility at 725 E. 40th Street, where the plant remains to this day. Demand for boats was so high that production began as soon as the walls and roof were raised. One of Slikkers’ sons or another trusted employee would guard the plant each night until windows and doors could be installed.

In 1977, the Pursuit fishing boat line was added to the S2 portfolio and so well received that another 72,000 square foot plant was built in 1983, this time in Fort Pierce, Florida. Production of the Pursuit line would be concentrated in Fort Pierce, leaving the Holland plant to focus on Tiara.

In 1983, the Slikkers family purchased the SlickCraft name back from AMF and began producing boats under the banner until the late 80s.

Now with four unique brands in the S2

Yachts portfolio - S2 Sailboats, Tiara Yachts, Pursuit Fishing Boats and SlickCraft Sport Boats, Leon transitioned to Chief Executive Officer in 1984. Eldest son David took over as president.

Leon began stepping further back in 1994, allowing his youngest son Tom to start assuming more and more of the administrative responsibilities of leading a corporation. He eventually took over as president of Pursuit in 2001, while at the same time, Bob became president of Tiara and David was promoted to CEO.

As the demands of the marketplace continued to evolve and grow, so did the S2 Yachts model lineup. After being elevated to CEO and President in 2012, Tom Slikkers ushered S2 into the next chapter, first unveiling the successful Coupe series before introducing the Tiara Sport outboardpowered product line.

The flagship 38 Luxury Sport (LS) debuted in the fall of 2017 as the first outboard-powered Tiara. Its focus on performance without sacrificing luxury quickly set it apart from other vessels in its class; the 38 LS was recognized as the 2018 Miami International Boat Show Innovation Award winner.

Since then, the outboard market has grown exponentially and Tiara continues to develop and add new models to its lineup. As of 2023, the outboard roster included seven models across three distinct lines: Luxury Sport (LS), Luxury Crossover (LX) and Luxury Express (LE). One of its most recent launches, the 48 LS, was named a 2021 Top Product by Boating Industry and earned a spot in Robb Reports’ Best of the Best issue as the best modular yacht.

In 2023, Tiara launched its largest vessel in company history: the EX 60. With a nod to the inboard heritage Leon built his business on, the EX 60 combines the classic elements, comforts and luxurious appointments of an inboard cruising yacht with the performance and functionality of a day boat.

Celebrating their 50th Anniversary on February 18, 2024, Tiara Yachts remains to this day one of the oldest, privately held boat manufacturers in the world. With the solid foundation laid by Leon’s vision, passion for boat building and drive to be the best, the second, third and even fourth generations of Slikkers and employees alike are poised for even greater things ahead as they navigate the ever-changing waters.

Leon Slikkers, Cheif Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board (left), and David Slikkers, President, S2 Yachts.

FROM THE BEGINNING

The Story of a Growing Family Business

Today, Smoker Craft Inc. is arguably the largest manufacturer of aluminum fishing and pleasure boats with five well known and respected brands: Smoker Craft, Starcraft, Sylvan, SunChaser, and Starweld. Together they offer literally hundreds of models that appeal to nearly any boater in a diverse marketplace.

It all started over a century ago. And yet, the descendants of the families that started the brand are still in charge today. There is virtually no other boatbuilder that can make the claim of family longevity, perseverance, dedication, and business acumen in an industry that is known for its ups and downs. Those family names, Schrock and Smoker, have built an almost century-long partnership with fourth and fifth generation family members still actively involved.

In 1903, Arthur E. Schrock started working at the Star Tank Company which manufactured galvanized steel tanks for the railroad and agricultural industries in Middlebury, Indiana. The company sidelined into galvanized steel boats, found success, and became the Star Tank and Boat Company. Schrock bought into the company and when the owner died in 1926, purchased the rest of the business and changed its name to Starcraft and concentrated solely on manufacturing boats. Arthur Schock died in 1966 at age 85.

Arthur’s son Harold Schrock, born in 1915, started at Starcraft by first hand painting the boats until he worked his way through all aspects of manfucaturing. After graduating from Goshen College, Harold started full-time at Starcraft in sales, then worked up to the general manager, then eventually became president of the company. Following World War II when aluminum once again became readily

available for non-military applications, it was Harold who pioneered its use for boatbuilding in place of the wood and steel mostly seen at the time. Harold became known as “the father of the aluminum boat business.” Starcraft by then had moved to Goshen, Indiana only a few miles away from Middlebury.

Aluminum proved to be strong as a boat material, easy to form, and of course much lighter than alternatives. The boats were easy to transport, easy to store, easy to power with the developing outboard motor business, and easy to trailer behind the vehicles of the day. For all of those reasons, they were also easy to launch and retrieve even at the most underdeveloped launch ramps. With the increase in disposable income during the boom years following the war, sales of aluminum boats skyrocketed. Starcraft grew and prospered. Recognizing another growing trend and wanting to capitalize, in 1958 Starcraft started fabricating fiberglass runabouts to cater to more of the pleasure boat market. To this day Starcraft continues to produce both fiberglass and aluminum boats. In 1965, Starcraft introduced the Deep-Vee hull design to aluminum boats which increased their rough water comfort and performance capabilities. It started building pontoon boats as well.

Starcraft leveraged its knowledge of aluminum and cabinetry fabrication by entering the exploding camper, RV, and

conversion van markets as well. They also expanded their aluminum boat model lineup considerably with its American, Holiday, and Islander cuddy cabins, and Chieftain full express cruiser models, all of which became popular, especially in the Canadian marketplace. In 1969, Harold Schrock sold Starcraft to the Bangor Punta corporate conglomerate that was accumulating boat manufacturers at the time.

Meanwhile, in nearby New Paris, Indiana, the Smoker Lumber Company, founded by John Smoker, sidelined into making oars and paddles, created the Smoker Oar and Paddle Company. By the mid-1920’s it had become the largest such manufacturer in the world. It had for years supplied the manual power for Starcraft boats.

John Smoker’s grandson Byron Smoker joined the company and by the mid1950’s, again by exploiting the benefits of aluminum, expanded the product line to include mobile homes and camper trailers. Then in 1963, it began producing its own

line of aluminum boats under the Smoker Craft moniker while still manufacturing wooden oars and paddles right through to 1988.

In nearby Wolcottville, Indiana, by the shores of Sylvan Lake, the Sylvan Boat Company, established in 1948, became an innovator and leader in houseboat and pontoon boat design. Sylvan eventually became the first manufacturer to offer pontoon boats with colored

side panels (fences), and also pioneered the development of high-performance pontoons. Having just sold his Starcraft company, Harold Schrock purchased Sylvan in 1969. Later in the 70’s, Harold then purchased a controlling interest in Smoker Craft from Byron Smoker, grandson of founder John Smoker.

In the meantime, Starcraft went through several corporate owners until it was purchased in the late 1980’s by Brunswick Corporation, which also included Mercury Marine in its stable. By the mid-1990’s, Brunswick Corporation decided to sell Starcraft once again and this time, Doug Schrock and his sisters Cinda, Susie, and Sara, the children of Harold Schrock who had sold Starcraft and grandchildren of Starcraft founder Arthur Schrock, purchased Starcraft from Brunswick. The RV side of Starcraft had been divested to Jayco of Middlebury, Indiana which to this day, is one of the leading manufacturers of campers, fifth wheel RV’s, and motorhomes. So once again, Starcraft was all boats, both fiberglass and aluminum.

Over the years, Starcraft, Smoker Craft, and Sylvan have been leaders in aluminum boat production. Adding to Starcraft’s revolutionary Deep-Vee aluminum hull design and Sylvan’s high performance pontoon development, both Starcraft and Smoker Craft met the surging demand for higher horsepower fishing boats in the booming walleye (pickerel) fishing market. In the mid-70’s, Smoker Craft introduced its tri-hull Vega models offering a dry and stable ride suited to both cruising and fishing.

Starcraft introduced its legendary PowerTrac hull design in 1991 specifically to accommodate higher horsepower outboard motors. Smoker Craft introduced its HydraLift Reverse Chine Hull design to drive water toward the boat’s stern to improve hole shots and on-plane performance. Later it developed pinch-free seating and introduced the Yarblow system of storage compartment ventilation. Meanwhile Sylvan introduced RPT and SPX tubes to offer better pontoon boat handling and to accommodate increased horsepower to satisfy the growing demands of tow sports.

Today, the Schrock and Smoker families are united in a unique family-owned boat company with five brands operating under

the Smoker Craft Inc. umbrella in New Paris, Indiana. Harold Schrock, son of founder Arthur Schrock, died in 2012. Harold’s three daughters, Cinda McKinney, Susie Graff, and Sara Barrett are all members of the Board of Directors of Smoker Craft Inc. with Cinda being Chairman of the Board.

Sara Barrett’s son, Peter Barrett, great grandson of founder Arthur Schrock, is currently Executive Vice-President as well as Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Corporate Development. Doug Smoker,

son of Byron Smoker and great grandson of John Smoker is President of Smoker Craft Inc. and Phil Smoker, son of Doug Smoker is Vice-President of Sales.

They are a combined family of dedicated boaters who fish, cruise, and surf and, “As a family-owned and operated boat company, we hold tightly to the same values we were built on four generations ago – integrity, leadership, and loyalty.” And these same values extend to their employees and to their dealers and to their customers.

A REVOLUTIONIZED RIDE

Seakeeper's gyrostabilizers have revolutionized boating industry's comfort standards over the last 15 years. Now, they aim to do it again with their latest innovation, the Seakeeper Ride system. This cutting-edge system automatically controls pitch, roll, and yaw while underway. According to Seakeeeper, the Ride system eliminates pitch and roll up to 70 percent, depending on the boat.

The system uses a pair of controllers, similar to interceptors, to achieve this. They are mounted on the port and starboard sides of the bottom of the transom. The blades are adjusted up and down at a high speed by electrically powered rotary actuators. These adjustments are made by the actuators at a rate of 100 per second, and can operate at a speed of 30 mm per second. The actuators are interfaced electrically with three-axis sensing hardware that evaluates the pitch, roll, and yaw while underway. This translates into a smoother ride at planing speed for boats in the 19' to 35' range.

In trials performed on a 28' center console with Seakeeper Ride in auto mode while running in 3' waves, the system was able to eliminate 45 percent of oscillation at 30 knots. Ride also eliminated list when all crewmembers shifted to one side by maintaining an even keel in auto mode.

Seakeeper Ride is offered in three distinct models with varying blade sizes for boats ranging in size from 19'-35'. Notably, the system can be installed aftermarket on most makes/models in this size range. Seakeeper Ride is also available as a feature on new models from Chris Craft.

Keeping Your Dream Afloat

When purchasing your new boat, you will want the peace of mind that an unplanned breakdown will not break the bank. That is why Walstrom Marine and Grand Bay Marine have partnered with three of the top extended service companies in the market to make sure your boat will be protected for years to come.

Fresh off the production line, all new boats will come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Unfortunately, the average component warranties range from only one to two years and motor warranties average around three years. Moreover, if you purchase a previously enjoyed boat, it’s likely your warranty has already expired.

So, how do you avoid the potential of a costly repair after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired? Investing in one of our marine protection programs could save you money and keep you safe on the water. If you are already taking advantage of our terrific financing terms, the cost of the service contract can be

conveniently bundled right into your monthly loan payment. This will allow you to protect your vessel without an immediate out of pocket expense.

You can also customize the coverage to meet your needs. Plans range up to 10 years on new and to 5 years on previously enjoyed boats. We have plans that will cover engine only, craft only, cabin only, and of course, fully-comprehensive plans that are accepted at repair facilities throughout the United States and Canada. This will give you the peace of mind that your boat is protected for years to come.

Many additional benefits are included with most of our plans. The benefits include emergency roadside and seaside assistance, towing services, hoist and lift services, and trip interruption reimbursement to name just a few.

This program also allows you to maximize your resale or trade value. Our programs are fully transferable to a new owner. When you are ready to upgrade to your new boat, you will be able to pass along the peace of mind of the coverage to the new owner.

Whether buying a new or previously enjoyed watercraft, Walstrom Marine and Grand Bay Marine can help keep your dream afloat by helping you find the protection that is right for you.

Lifelong Boater CRAIG LAMM

Nearly every boat Craig has ever owned has had some variation of the name “Shepsl.” Shepsl, in Hebrew, translates to little lamb. Craigs last name, Lamm, though spelled differently, was the inspiration behind this connection. Over the years, aside from Shepsl I – Shepsl XII, some of his vessels names include Shepsl Gold, Red Shepsl, Knot Shepsl, Sheplette, Shepl Fish, and Shepsl Glassic.

Craig Lamm's love affair with boats, like many of us, began at a young age. Given the time he’s spent on and around the waters of Michigan, and the impressive boat collection he has accumulated, it seemed destined that Craig and Walstrom Marine would eventually cross paths.

Long before Walstrom Marine ever had the pleasure of serving Craig, he was honing his skills and developing a deep-rooted love of all things aquatic. Growing up in Chicago, his family kept their boat at Diversey Harbor. “Every son of boaters gets a dinghy,” Craig recalls. And he was no exception. “Mine was a 9' plastic sport yak…I got a large anchor line, tied to the boat. I could row as far as my anchor line.” At about 5 years old, he would take this toy boat and paddle as far as his young arms would allow him. It was a simple start, but it put in motion a passion that would last a lifetime.

In those days, his family’s boat was a 28' Chris Craft Cavalier, a single-engine beauty that was ideal for adventures on Lake Michigan. “I was very aggressive as a young kid, and I wanted to run the boat.” So, at just six

years old, he recalls taking the helm, setting a straight compass course of 110 degrees, and navigating the entire 42-mile, two-hour run across Lake Michigan to Michigan City, Indiana with his family aboard. It was a remarkable feat for a young boy, and it provided a glimpse into his future as an avid boater.

Craig made his first major boat purchase at just 13 years old. He recalls the purchase with pride, “At 13 years old I used my Bar Mitzvah money…for $800 I bought a 1961, 16' [Montgomery Ward brand Sea King] with a 40hp. It was used, but it was mine!” This purchase marked a turning point and made it possible for him to fully embrace life on the water on his own terms. The next time his family ventured on the Cavalier to Michigan City, Craig wasn’t far behind–literally. “When the family took the boat across the lake, I followed. I crossed the lake in my own boat.”

At 14, Craig started his first entrepreneurial endeavor-a boat washing business. “By the time I was 17, I was taking care of 70 boats. I had a crew of seven. Cleaning them, doing wax jobs, teak jobs, [getting them] into the yard before the season.” This business allowed him to upgrade to his second boat, an 18-footer that notably had a cabin. He wanted to sleep on his boat, and this purchase allowed him to

do just that. His next boat was bit bigger, 25 feet, and had both a dinette and an enclosed head with a shower. As he grew older and found more success, he was able to continue to upgrade his vessels, which in turn, deepened his passion for boating.

In the 1970s, there was a resurgence in the interest in wooden boats, and Craig was right there to embrace it. He discovered a 1955, 53' Chris Craft Conqueror–the largest boat Chris Craft produced that year. This boat became more than just a vessel; it was his heart and soul. His children were raised on it, and as of today he has spent 31 seasons on the boat. Craig’s passion for boats led him to acquire more and more vessels over the years. Today, he has seven slips at the end of his dock in St. Clair, MI. “It’s a collection to normal people, but to me it’s all the stuff I like,” he reflects. “And I use them all!” Today, Craig actively participates in the Antique Boat Show circuit, and takes home prizes frequently because of the meticulous care he gives his vessels.

Over the course of his life, Craig has spent his summers navigating around the Great Lakes. During his travels, he would often venture north, always stopping in Harbor Springs, where he had his first interactions

with Walstrom Marine. "Walstrom was the preferred premier yard, even when I knew it in the early ‘80s…They always treated me well when I needed work done.”

Years later, his relationship with Walstrom Marine would unexpectedly deepen. In 2018, Craig purchased a 1975 Burger cruiser, under the impression that he had a place downstate to store it. Unfortunately, his storage plan fell through. Burger Boat Company recommended that he contact Walstrom Marine, but Craig recalls being hesitant because of the distance. “That’s a long run! That’s a 2-day run for me if I ran all day!” Dave Cope, Service Manager at the Cheboygan Walstrom Marine location, assured Craig that he could store his boat without disrupting his boating summer. The Cheboygan team would retrieve it in the fall, perform the needed service and maintenance over the winter, and have it ready to go for him in the spring. It was a level of service and dedication that left Craig impressed. “It’s been like that each season. They haven’t disappointed me yet!”

Craig particularly admires the Cheboygan team’s willingness to be proactive with his boat. “Usually a boat yard says, ‘Give me your punch list, we’ll take care of it.’ They only look at what you tell them. Dave Cope and his team find things for me. They go looking for stuff.” This meticulous care allows Craig to start his boating season without a worry. "The moment I get on the boat," Craig explains, "starts the next season’s list." Most boaters wait until the last minute to compile their punch list, but not Craig. His attention to detail and love for his vessels ensure that he’s always a step ahead. What sets Walstrom Marine’s Cheboygan yard apart, according to Craig, is the personal touch. They make him feel like he’s their only customer. It’s a level of service that has left him singing their praises wherever he goes. "Wherever I am," Craig says, "I tell people you should be storing [with Walstrom]." The level of service delivered at the Cheboygan yard leaves Craig feeling like it is a concierge boat service, something he says he’s never seen anywhere else. “Walstrom is a true concierge boat yard. When I say concierge [I mean that] even the work they don’t do, they’ll find the information

to figure out what it is I need…they do the work, and they never miss!”

Craig Lamm stands as a testament to a lifetime dedicated to boats, a passion that has only grown stronger with time. While others may opt for newer models, he lingers with the old classics, preserving the beauty and heritage

CRAIG’S PANTRY

of these vessels for generations to come. Craig’s story is not just about his love for boats; it’s also a testament to the enduring partnership he’s built with Walstrom Marine, a relationship grounded in trust, respect, and a shared passion for the water.

Walstrom Marine loves working with Craig due to his shared passion for boating and his remarkable dedication to his community. One of his most significant contributions is the establishment of Craig’s Pantry, a food pantry that primarily serves the Jewish community in Florida.

Around 12 years ago, in his semi-retired state, Craig was searching for greater purpose in life, and a way to give back.

A suggestion from his Rabbi led him to volunteer at a local food pantry, where he uncovered a severe shortage of food items—specifically kosher and allergenspecific items—for food-insecure Jewish residents in Broward County, Florida, where Craig spends his winters.

After volunteering with a local pantry, he recognized some of their shortcomings. He eventually went out on his own, using his resources to establish his own nonprofit, Craig’s Pantry. By creating a pantry that increased offerings of kosher food as well as catering to other dietary restrictions, he has created an organization that helps Broward County’s residents in need, including Holocaust survivors, homebound seniors, individuals with special needs, and domestic abuse victims. His vision encompassed not only delivering food but also offering companionship and catering to specific dietary needs.

Craig often ventures to the Bahamas, cruising the islands and fishing on one of his beloved boats. He began to take and package the fish he was catching, and sending it back to stock the pantry— and the response from clients was

unbelievable. They were incredibly grateful to have access to fresh fish. And so started the program, “Fishin’ with a Mission.”

When Covid-19 hit, Craig became concerned for the Bahamians, who make their living from tourism—which had been shattered by the pandemic. He began to bring along pallets of staple food items to drop with locals in need, and was overwhelmed by the reception from the locals. In simple terms, Craig believes that because he is taking fish from their waters to stock his pantry, he has a responsibility to give back to the people.

Craig’s unwavering belief in the value of personally contributing to his community has made him an inspiring force. Craig’s Pantry invites others to join their passionate mission of bringing love and hope to the Jewish community in Florida and beyond.

Ben Pearson TIARA 43LS

The Tiara 43LS is the perfect blend of sport, style, and luxury. With multiple social zones, this boat allows you to entertain from the bow, cockpit— forward or aft, or while below deck. This boat is large enough to invite several friends and family but not so big that a couple can’t cruise and dock at their favorite lakeside dinner spot. With a length of 43 feet, it’s the perfect size for those seeking a balance between space and maneuverability. Powered by Twin Mercury 600 Verado V12 engines, she has a top speed of over 50 mph, so you can get to your destination quickly if needed. Not only does the 43LS give you the ultimate day boat experience, but she also has the proper set up below deck to sleep four comfortably with two separate births. This exquisite vessel combines timeless design, cutting-edge technology, and uncompromising craftsmanship to offer an unparalleled yachting experience.

Robert Rogier PURSUIT S 328

The Pursuit S 328 is the “best selling” model in the 32-to 35-foot center console boat category; it’s easy to see why I love it. Powered by twin Yamaha F 300 engines with Helmmaster EX Joystick, the engines provide ample power (32 mph cruise and 49.6 WOT) and make maneuvering a breeze. The Stay Point digital anchor system is convenient when waiting for a slip to free up at your favorite restaurant or the bridge in Charlevoix. Inside, the generous cabin and optional A/C make for comfortable getaways. The standard 18" Garmin Screens offer top-notch navigation and fish-finding capabilities. Plus, the S 328 strikes a perfect balance with ample seating for entertaining, without compromising the needs of avid fishermen. It’s a winning package for boating enthusiasts—combining exceptional quality, functionality, and performance.

Hi Stover

TIARA EX 60

I love the new Tiara EX 60! Tiara has really stepped it up with the introduction of this vessel. As you enter the vessel at the cockpit, the area has large upper and lower seating areas with fold-down terraces, coolers, grill, bar seating and more. An amazing space that can comfortably seat up to ten for alfresco dining. Forward, even more seating and lounging space. The salon and bridge deck open up to the cockpit, transcending a cruising boat to become a full featured day boat. The pilothouse door is a great feature at the most advanced Garmin helm yet. Below the three staterooms are beyond comfortable in typical Tiara fashion. The new Tiara EX 60 is a winner through and through.

SEA RAY SLX 310

It is hard to think of pleasure boating without thinking of Sea Ray–they have stood the test of time for quality, timeless beauty, and being the perfect boat for family cruising. The perfect boat for the Harbor Springs boating lifestyle is the Sea Ray SLX 310. This vessel offers plenty seating, including a huge bow area, large cockpit, and forwardfacing companion seating. The hard top offers protection from those who wish to be out of the sun. There is plenty of refrigerator space for drinks and food, a grill to make delicious grilled meals, and cleanup is easy with the onboard sink. The generous swim platform becomes the favorite place to be to watch your kids jumping into the water or just to lounge and just watch the world go by. Cruising around in this boat is a breeze with its twin engines and Dynamic Running Surface and joystick docking controls. At the end of the day, after swimming, snacking, and cruising, you might be lucky enough to see a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan.

Scott Way PURSUIT DC 365

Being a Walstrom salesperson and holding a captain’s license gives me the unique opportunity to sell and operate various types of boats with different model layouts. It has been said “there is no perfect boat for every application,” but the one that does fit many for Northern Michigan is a dual console Pursuit. The dual console model comes in lengths ranging from 24' all the way up to 36'. The DC365 is a particularly great boat with features like an onboard generator, Seakeeper, cockpit air and heat. The wide-open cockpit layout features a grill, fridge and wet bar. Powered by 300 Yamaha outboard motors, they have proven to be very reliable, with the ability to push the 17,000 pound vessel to WOT of about 50mph. This is a great day boat for any size party or an overnight for two.

Joe Gallagher PURSUIT S 288

My favorite boat for 2024 is the Pursuit S 288. I chose this boat because it is stylish, nimble, and capable. A few of my favorite features include the eyecatching wood accents, twin 300hp Yamaha engines, and port side dive door. The S 288 is not the biggest or fastest boat in the Pursuit lineup, but it offers everything you need in a center console. Whether you are looking to get on the water for an evening cruise, or head offshore to your favorite fishing spot, this boat can do it all!

CLEAN COAST

Great Lakes Conservation Week

It’s a calm day on Lake Michigan, the water is clear and warm, perfect for a snorkel. Plunging under the surface with your mask on, a new world unfolds before you. Emerald green grass gently swaying in the current. Stalks of weedy milfoil reach for the sun-lit surface and turn your surroundings into a dreamy aquatic forest. A speckled smallmouth bass lazily swims past, putting you at ease in this new environment. Kicking a bit further, the expanse opens up to a sandbar where sunlight skips and swirls turning the lake bottom. Amidst the whimsical party unfolding, something catches your eye buried in the sand. Swimming closer, it does not belong to this environment at all. In fact, it is an algae ridden, deflated happy birthday balloon. It feels like an alien visiting from another planet, foreign and imposing. Plucking it from the untouched surroundings gives you a sense of grace like putting the world back to the way it was.

Clean Coast Great Lakes Conservation Week, Aug 16-19, 2023 was a festival bringing together conservation, art, education, music, science, boating, diving, agriculture, and community in the Harbor Springs-Petoskey area. At its core, Clean Coast strives to educate in order to build compassion and inspire action throughout Harbor Springs and the surrounding communities.

Wednesday, we kicked off Clean Coast Week with an enlightening opening

ceremony in the beautiful Walstrom Marine Harbor Springs showroom. We listened to speakers Mark Breederland from Michigan Clean Marina and Lindsey Walker from Emmet County Recycling Center about how they are creating circular economies and how recycled shrink wrap from local boats comes back as plastic bags and trex decking. We learned about lake cycles from Ward Walstrom and the upcoming abandoned boat fiberglass recycling program with United by Water. We toured Walstrom Marine’s Best Management Practices for being a clean marina. Later that day, we entered the water for a dive clean up at Zorn Park Beach. A group of seven divers pulled up 15 pounds of trash off the lake bottom.

Thursday we sat circled up, under the hoop house at Mshko’ode farm learning

about sustainable farming practices, while the land around us was nourished by a welcomed rain storm. During the conversation we asked questions, connected with each other and the land. Later we toured their working farm that produces vegetables, mushrooms, poultry and pork for the community and native elders.

Friday morning, 30 Clean Coasters gathered to take a tour of the Emmet County Recycling Center and learn how to be zero waste heroes. With Andi Tolzdorf, Director of Public Works, as our tour guide, we were treated with five star service, informed of the circular product loops they have created and shown around the groundbreaking facility. By installing cutting-edge robots to improve sorting, investing in market research and putting their community first, it is no

surprise that Emmet County Recycling is known as the top facility state wide.

After an informative morning we took to the beach to do our part in sorting through and picking up trash. For this event, we partnered with Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Fisheries and Wildlife Program for an interactive demonstration on their vital whitefish and Great Lakes sturgeon research. Their specimen collection and seine net demonstration was eyeopening for kids and adults alike.

Serving Mother Earth is a crucial part of life, but nourishing our bodies along the way must also be a priority. The final day of the festival we woke up and headed out into the morning sun for some stretching and soul food with Harbor Yoga. Ali Hill led us through an enriching class to thank our bodies and get us ready for the evening festivities. As the sun started to lay low turning the tall grass gold, we gathered under a large tent to

listen to one of Michigan’s top performing artists, Joshua Davis. His melodies were the perfect closing ceremony for a harmonious four day event.

The money raised from Clean Coast goes directly back into our local community by helping keep Harbor Springs lakes, lands, beaches, marinas, and farms clean and healthy. We bring educators, scientists, specialists, movers and shakers together with community members to hopefully give our future generations something to look forward to.

We thank our partner Walstrom Marine and our sponsors Little Juice, Carterra, Harbor West Yacht Services, Fox and Hound, Nancy and Marty McEnroe, Mari and Ward Walstrom, and Harbor Yoga. For more information on each of the events, head to unitedbywater.org and look out for next year 2024.

Captain’s Corner B ATING TIPS

Apps on a phone or tablet are another way technology can help us out on the water. A question we often get asked is what our favorite boating apps are. Here is a list of some of our team’s personal favorites:

Apps to Elevate Your On-Water Experience

There is some great technology available in the boating industry that can make your experience on the water much easier and more enjoyable. Today, most new boats include the latest tech to enhance your boating experience. While many boaters will shy away from tech while others embrace it, the truth is that it is here to stay, and it is always evolving. Whether it is one of our master mechanics diagnosing an engine issue with a laptop, or uploading the latest software version to a Garmin electronics suite, we use tech tools every day.

MARINE TRAFFIC: This app allows you to see any boat equipped with AIS. When you spot a ship on the horizon, you can use the Marine Traffic app to see where it is headed and where it has been, along with pictures and specs. This app is a must for anyone who enjoys tracking their favorite ships and yachts.

FUSION LINK: Imagine your kids are napping in the bow, but you want to still want music on the swim platform. Now imagine being able to adjust the volume of different zones while sitting on the swim platform with your feet in the water. The Fusion Link app gives you full control of your Fusion stereo system from your smart phone. This handy app is also where you’ll find the latest software updates to keep your stereo running and sounding great. This is highly recommended for any new Tiara, Sea Ray, Chris Craft or Regal owner with a Fusion stereo.

WINDY: This is a great app for getting both current and future wind speed data. You have the option to choose between NOAA or European model forecasts. You’ll find that this app is equally useful for checking wind speeds on Lake Michigan as it is for tracking hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.

ACTIVE CAPTAIN APP: This free app creates a powerful connection between your smart device & Garmin chart plotter, charts, maps & the boating community. The app is compatible with the Garmin Navionics+ or Garmin Navionics Vision+ subscriptions. Plus, it downloads daily updates & provides premium content to get the most out of the technology while on the water.

NAVIONICS MOBILE APP:

This is an up-to-date detailed chart plotting app that allows boaters to plot courses automatically, or manually. Users have the ability to choose the best routes possible for a trip, to record tracks for fishing, or mark points of interest. All of this can be done from the convenience of your home or office with the use of a smartphone, tablet or computer. Being able to access harbor information, launch ramps, contour lines & ETA’s for a desired outcome are just a few of the great features of the app. Given the amount of information that Navionics provides boaters, the small annual fee is worthwhile. This app is even more capable now thanks to the parent company Garmin & Active Captain. Information can be uploaded to your Garmin helm screens.

VESSEL VIEW MOBILE

APP: Mercury offers a great alternative to updating or adding analog gauges on your current boat that may not have a full gauge cluster. A simple plug & play module works on 2004 or newer outboards 40 hp & up as well as sterndrive models. Get accurate engine information such as fuel usage, engine temp, battery life or RPM’s right on your smartphone or tablet.

EMERGENCY Service Anytime

o matter how hard you plan or how much maintenance you perform on your boat in the winter months, there is always the possibility that you will need emergency after hours support. To provide this support and to give our customers peace of mind, we’ve instituted an emergency after-hours call service. By calling our main number after hours, you will be directed to a local call service that will then notify one of our senior personnel of your situation. That Walstrom Marine team member will then call you directly to assess the situation and work to get your issue resolved as quickly as possible. In certain situations, such as life or death or fire, the call service will also ask you to notify the proper authorities by calling 911. Calls made after 10 pm that are non-life threatening will be returned first thing the following morning.

In the summer of 2021, we had a few instances where this service came in handy for our customers. The services were provided between our Harbor Springs and Cheboygan locations. In all instances, our team was able to follow up with a phone call and bring our customers’ vessels in for repairs. Just as we had hoped, we are able to help our customers enjoy our short summers a little more by giving them this piece of mind.
