Dr. William Carey FATHER of MODERN MISSIONS

Born in 1761 in Paulerspury, England, William Carey was self-educated during his work as a cobbler and pastor in Great Britain. As one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society in 1792 and later during his forty-one years of missionary work in India, he became known as the Father of Modern Missions. Carey felt called to serve as a missionary in India, and spent his years there as an evangelist, Bible translator, social reformer, educator, linguist, and botanist. In India, Carey worked tirelessly for the spread of the Gospel of Christ, education, and social reform.

Striving to emulate Dr. William Carey’s heart for service to both God and all people, William Carey University is proud to honor his life and legacy by practicing his teaching to “Expect great things; attempt great things.”

“William Carey’s commitment to Christ’s mission is especially commendable. He displayed selflessness throughout his journey and never gave up. His commitment to the mission field glorified God, and had an incomprehensible impact on the world”

HATTIESBURG CAMPUS

Founded in 1892 as Pearl River Boarding School, in Poplarville, MS the institution that is now William Carey University moved to Hattiesburg and opened in 1906 as South Mississippi College. Over time, the institution evolved to become William Carey University, named for the Father of Modern Missions.

Buildings and grounds include a state-of-the-art health sciences building and is home to our osteopathic medicine complex, three-story student center, a variety of residential halls to suit individual needs, athletic facilities, library, and gardens.

City of Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg, Mississippi is less than 100 miles from the state capital of Jackson; the Mississippi Gulf Coast; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Mobile, Alabama. Because of this, Hattiesburg is also called the “Hub City.”

Our comfortable college town has two four-year universities, a community college, unique small businesses, and approximately 50,000 people to get to know at the many festivals and activities. Hattiesburg is also home to many churches of varying denominational affiliations and sizes.

WCU Hattiesburg offers degrees at every level - bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral. With day, night, hybrid, and online class offerings, you can choose your own college experience--traditional, commuter, online, or a combination of the three.

TRADITION CAMPUS

Located in Biloxi, Mississippi, WCU’s Tradition campus is committed to serving the Gulf Coast region. As the anchor of the Tradition Learning Medical City, we are proud to offer quality healthcare programs in critical care areas such as undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, and a doctorate in pharmacy. Additional undergraduate and graduate degree options provide students access to programs in business administration, counselor education, criminal justice and forensics, education, and psychology.

(For a complete list of programs offered at WCU, see pages 28-29 and 36-37.)

As a commuter campus, many of the classes are structured for working students with night and online offerings to conveniently serve the residents of the local community. The newest addition to the Tradition campus is WCU’s School of Pharmacy, offering one of eleven accelerated pharmacy programs in the United States.

CITY ofBILOXI

The beautiful coastal city of Biloxi is located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with 62 miles of scenic shoreline. Best known for its museums, restaurants, shopping, and outdoor activities, the city is also home to resilient residents whose spirit of optimism and courage is an integral part of the local history and culture.

BATON ROUGE Site

WCU's Louisiana branch of the School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and an RN-to-BSN program. WCU’s Baton Rouge Site is the only transfer specific location. These are designed to help prepare nurses for changing needs in the healthcare field, focusing on providing students with the latest treatment techniques and technologies and offering the best education in patient-centered care.

BATON ROUGE, LA

Located in Southeast Louisiana, Baton Rouge is the fifth largest city on the Mississippi River and the central hub of Louisiana’s largest parish.

The Winters School of Music is very inclusive and serves as an amazing place to cultivate my art. This has made my experience here more than I imagined it would be as a freshman. The university strives to produce wellrounded graduates and provides opportunities for students who do not major in these programs to engage their creative interests through participation in music ensembles, theatre productions, and art exhibitions.

If you are looking for a way to enjoy the arts or express your creativity, the Hattiesburg campus is home to the Sarah Gillespie Museum of Art and the Lucile Parker Gallery. Both collections include works by Mississippi, national, and internationally known artists. The School of Music offers concerts, operas, symphonies, and other performances by world-renowned performers and student groups. WCU’s award winning theatre department presents student produced shows several times each year. The campus is also home to the Center for Study of the Life and Work of William Carey in Donnell Hall. This museum is dedicated to Dr. William Carey’s contributions to the mission movement and life in India.

“I always knew I wanted to attend college when I graduated high school, and my parents took me to tour colleges. The most challenging part of student life is trying to juggle everyday life as well as being a college student. William Carey University has been a dream. I love this school and the faculty. Carey Alumni AROUND THE WORLD

William Carey

University’s

more than 30,000 alumni span the globe! WCU graduates can be found in all 50 U.S. states and in 57 countries worldwide.

WCU strives to produce well rounded graduates who excel in their careers and make a positive impact in their communities. Active alumni are extremely important to the university and serve as ambassadors to share WCU with friends and family. We are so thankful for our faithful alumni who share and support our alma mater! We hope you will choose Carey and one day be a part of our Alumni Association.

“William Carey University taught me that I am capable of great things. ‘Great things’ has a lot of different meanings. For me it means earning a bachelor's degree in nursing, opening up to people, stepping out of my comfort zone, and learning to be responsible and independent. Carey gave me lifelong friendships I will cherish forever and equipped me to pursue my calling in life! ”

Morgan

“As a Christian, my number one priority was choosing a university that exemplified the body of Christ. I also wanted to experience culture shock (being a Boston girl), but gained even more from the community Carey offered. The music program at Carey not only prepared me for my music therapy career, but also my position as a church music director and collaborative pianist. It’s incredible to see how God used me during my four years at Carey, and how my experiences impact my life today.”

“Studying at Carey deepened my knowledge and understanding about the corporate world. It also helped me realize the divisions and departments of business I want to pursue. This process helped me significantly in getting to know myself better with respect to my upcoming career. On a more personal note, Carey taught me unity, gratitude and appreciation of friendships. I can also say meeting the people at Carey from Mississippi, other states, and other countries, was a very unique and special experience.”

“My family has a long history of military service and I knew this was a path I wanted to follow. I chose Carey because its atmosphere is conducive to learning. WCU faculty are extremely helpful and promote an environment for learning, as well as encourage success in and out of the classroom. WCU helped shape me into the person I am today. ”
