Dear Friends, For many, 2021 was a pivotal year for careers. It offered each of us an opportunity to reflect on our roles, values and goals. It spurred organizations to re-examine workspaces, management and talent strategies, and culture. In the CDO, we found renewed energy to reimagine careers. We saw an opportunity for further innovation in 2021. As the world pivoted from virtual to hybrid engagement, we experimented with combining these modalities to create more inclusive experiences. We adjusted our strategic focus to prioritize empathy, reconnection, and strengthening our talent community. Throughout the year, we inspired by the work and research of our faculty, centers, initiatives; and MIT Sloan’s mission: to develop innovative leaders who improve the world. We were motivated by our employer partners, with whom we worked to support more inclusive workplaces. And, of course, we were energized by our students and alumni, whose creative ideas helped us experiment with innovative ways to support the career journey. If you have taken a moment over the last year to reimagine the career journey, we invite you to join us on ours.

OUR CAREER PHILOSOPHY Career is an adventure, and like any great adventure, there are challenges for the hero to overcome. We serve as guides for our students as they move through each stage of the journey: from discovering their unique talents and potential for impact, to identifying pathways for opportunity and connection, and leveraging successful strategies that will help them move forward, wherever they want their career journey to take them. Unlike many career teams, we design resources and opportunities for students across the MIT Sloan portfolio, from early-stage professionals engaging in their first job search to mid-career professionals and executives evaluating advancement opportunities. Alumni are an important part of the MIT Sloan talent community. We offer coaching to support career development and transitions; and facilitate opportunities for them to re-engage with the MIT Sloan talent community by sharing their journeys and insights with current students.

EMBAs Helping EMBAs: Career Conversations In May, EMBA candidates and alumni participated in EMBAs Helping EMBAs: Career Conversations, a virtual career networking event to support connections between current students and alumni, and provide an opportunity for EMBAs to share their knowledge and help others. EMBA alumni offered their insights into industries and how they navigated a career path that has led them to their companies. Featured speaker Kristin Riley, EMBA ’20, discusses the importance of networking in the linked video.

Making Headlines: EMBA Best & Brightest Kevin D. Johnson, EMBA ’21, featured in Poets & Quants Best and Brightest, is the President and CEO of Johnson Media Inc., and founder of KINETIC, an organization that helps entrepreneurs learn about the funding process. NEW YORK FINANCE DAY In 2021, New York Finance Day combined virtual events and an in-person networking event to give students an opportunity to connect with leading finance firms. Over 30 students attended virtual events with Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Evercore, Moelis, and Centerview Partners; and 25 students traveled to New York to attend an in-person networking event hosted by JP Morgan at their NYC office. 2021 Year in Review | 11

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION ROUND TABLE with the Employer Advisory Council

In January 2021, our Employer Relations and Recruiting team kicked off the year with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Roundtable in partnership with our Employer Advisory Council. Council members and recruiting partners from Google, Amazon, Fidelity and Wayfair met with students to discuss their organization’s efforts to promote, support, and move towards a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce. The session also featured an opportunity to join smaller breakout sessions to dive deeper into select topics with each company. Special thanks to our partners for this event:

CAREER + IDENTITY SERIES In the spring, the CDO organized the first Career + Identity series. Students participated in this four-part workshop series to share how identity impacts career exploration and the job search, and to discuss important topics including: • • •

How to evaluate a company’s DEI commitment How to spot racial gaslighting How to identify allies in the recruiting process and supportive organizations

HACKATHON FOR INCLUSION: IDENTIFYING INCLUSIVE EMPLOYERS WITH SHARED VALUES Sponsor: MIT Sloan Career Development Office The CDO manages relationships with hundreds of companies that want to improve diversity in their organizations. Students similarly identify DE&I as an important factor to consider when evaluating their potential employers. However, it can be difficult to identify which companies are truly committed. In 2021, we sponsored a hackathon project to ideate on ways to identify inclusive employers through data, and how to assist students in finding employers that share their values.

ALUMNI AFFINITY COUNCIL CAREER SERIES MIT Sloan alumni are active contributors to the career community. In 2021, the MIT Sloan Affinity Council’s Career Series featured events for Big Tech and Entrepreneurship, led by alumni from the Classes of 2014 through 2019. After a busy year supporting networking and career connections, the Affinity Group Alumni Council, the Office of External Relations, and the Career Development Office connected with students and alumni for a year-end mixer celebrating activity from the 2021 year. A special thank you to the MIT Sloan Affinity Group Alumni Council for all they do to support Sloanies.

ACCELERATING NETWORKING In December, we partnered with Tarek Makawi, MBA ’23 and Nahel Rifai Burneo, MBA ’23, two enterprising students who designed a system to efficiently match their classmates for our very first Sloanies Speed Networking event. Students joined us in the InnovationHQ Hacker Reactor space to share their career interests and build community.

CELEBRATING DIFFERENT THINKERS AND INNOVATION We reconnected with our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion artwork in 2021, highlighting select pieces in a series of posts on the CDO’s LinkedIn Group. In so many ways, 2021 proved when we collaborate, we find better ways forward. This post had the most fans: At MIT Sloan, innovation is more than a buzzword. It’s how we work, and at the heart of it is thinking differently. Whether improving a process or inventing something new, teams that consider as many viewpoints as possible come up with ingenious solutions that just work better. They bring more ideas, they challenge assumptions, they combine two ideas into something completely new. Thinking differently - it’s not just a value, it’s a competitive advantage. Vijay D'Silva CDO Executivein-Residence

Vijay D’Silva (SM ’92) is the MIT Sloan CDO’s first-ever Executive in Residence. Vijay brings a broad perspective to trends and opportunities in finance, technology and consulting. He lends specialized knowledge on industry verticals and functions, for students who seek to shape their programs and careers, or pursue entrepreneurship. In his first year, Vijay has worked closely with MIT Sloan’s executive-level MBA students, leading strategic career conversations, creating access to opportunities, and providing support. This spring, Vijay is also co-delivering a Seminar in Leadership to the Sloan Fellows MBAs.

Vijay is a Senior Partner Emeritus at McKinsey & Company, where he rotated through key roles, including as leader of McKinsey’s Digital, Banking & Securities, Global Payments, and Risk Management practices. He served on McKinsey’s Partner and Senior Partner election committees, and founded and oversaw the McKinsey Talent Network. He has over 25 years of experience counseling CEOs of banks, fintechs, technology, and industrial firms. He is currently on the board of FIS, a leading provider of technology solutions for merchants, banks and capital markets firms globally. He also is a trustee of Catholic Charities of New York, and is on the MIT Executive Board.

STRENGTHS FOR 2021 OUR STRENGTHS DRIVE COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION As an organization that leverages the CliftonStrengths assessment to catalyze highly effective teamwork in our office, we are please to share that 167 students joined us in completing the assessment this year and are prepared to bring their strengths to their careers and their next organizations. While we use and appreciate all our strengths, when reflecting on those of particular value in 2021, we found that Significance, Developer, and Consistency helped us identify new ways to connect our students, alumni, and recruiters, and to build clear pathways for engagement and support during a career journey that, due to the pandemic, offered some challenging terrain. Below we share the theme definitions and how we used the strengths this year:

CliftonStrengths Definitions1 Significance: People exceptionally talented in the Significance theme want to make a big impact. They are independent and prioritize projects based on how much influence they will have on their organization or people around them.

Significance inspired us to make a difference by creating new spaces to support members of the MIT Sloan community, including adding a Veterans community on Your CDO, and prioritizing DEI initiatives and inclusivity in our daily work to make a lasting impact at MIT Sloan and beyond.

Developer: People exceptionally talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from evidence of progress.

Developer drove us to make continual enhancements to advising, networking, and recruiting options to support students’ success as they explored and evaluated career paths in a hybrid recruiting environment.

Consistency: People exceptionally talented in the Consistency theme are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same. They crave stable routines and clear rules that everyone needs to follow.

Consistency provided structure and order as we transitioned from a virtual career experience to a hybridized one. It highlighted the importance of providing clear pathways to advising and resources, as well as new opportunities for connection and support.

FROM THE CDO TEAM As we reflect on what we achieved and the guideposts that kept us on track, the artwork by Gapingvoid brings us back to an important shared value that is part of many MIT success stories.
