BRAMPTON SOCCER CENTRE Brampton / Ontario / Canada
BACKGROUND A RIGOROUS MODERN LANGUAGE AND URBAN SENSIBILITY ARE USED TO CREATE A UNIQUE SENSE OF PLACE AND CIVIC DESTINATION FOR THIS SPORT AND RECREATION FACILITY IN THE RAPIDLY DEVELOPING COMMUNITY OF NORTH BRAMPTON, ONTARIO. The City of Brampton required a city-wide indoor ‘Soccer Centre of Excellence’ which also served the needs of the immediate community. The building completed May 2007, provides year round soccer facilities nurturing youth and adult soccer to a high level. Located at the corner of two arterial roads in an emerging part of Brampton, the building is designed as a full site community and soccer destination. An array of outdoor activities compliments the building’s four indoor soccer fields, bleachers, change rooms, community wing, and main lobby. The facility is designed for future and current flexibility as it is fully convertible to other sports and is sized and scaled to operate four concurrent independent programs including trade shows and on-going community functions.

SITE PLAN
BUILDING MASSING
The building develops a language of ‘floating’ interlocking planes with metallic outer shells and cedar lined interiors. These planes comprehensively organize the site by forming clerestory towers and hooded overhangs creating views in and through the building while also creating visually inter-penetrating program areas and filtered light inside.

COMMUNITY
With the growth and shifting demographics in Brampton the client requested sporting arenas that were purpose built for indoor soccer – a favoured sport of the South Asian community – but could, however, still be 1) flexible for other activities, 2) operated independently and 3) adapted to other sports in the future. The project is designed to be convertible to hockey and other indoor sports and is sized and scaled to operate with 4 independent programs running concurrently, including trade show events with a host of on-going community functions. SUSTAINABILITY / ACCESSIBILITY
Sustainable principles such as natural day-lighting, zoned lighting control, solar shading and passive ventilation systems are design drivers. The building operates predominately without electrical lighting during the day. A high standard of envelope, mechanical, electrical, commissioning, and BAS monitoring systems promote ‘best practice’ maintenance / lifecycle standards and reduced energy usage. Brampton Soccer Centre is ‘the first’ project in the City to fully integrate the newly created City of Brampton, Design Accessibility Standards. From high contrast wayfinding to highly accessible change and washroom features, BSC is the city’s template for accessibility.
