Day 2
April 18-2017 The Building Blocks Model: A Simple Framework for Understanding Learning and Behavioral Challenges 8:30 – 12:30
Workshop
Brief Descriptor
This half-day workshop will explain a simple model for understanding students’ learning and behavioral challenges. The Building Blocks Model targets factors, behaviors, and abilities that are related to school success. When professionals are equipped with an understanding of a student’s learning and behavioral challenges, they are better prepared to select interventions for students. Within the model, the classroom behavior and learning problems of students are represented using a three-level, triangular framework with the bottom of the triangle reflecting foundational skills, the middle of the triangle representing symbolic processing or perceptual processing skills, and the top of the triangle representing conceptual or thinking abilities. Participants will be provided with a detailed questionnaire to help pinpoint a specific student’s strengths and needs.
Participants will increase their:
Understanding of how attention and behavior affect school performance. Knowledge of how processing abilities affect academic learning. Understanding of how oral language and the use of strategies contribute to effective learning. Abilities to address variations in students’ environments, abilities, needs and learning styles.
