HUSKERS WORKING FOR NCAA BID IN 2017 The Nebraska men’s tennis team enters the 2017 season with a young and hungry group of Huskers hoping to continue their climb back to the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Kerry McDermott, who is closing in on 400 career victories at Nebraska, led the Huskers to an exciting opening season at the new Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in 2016.

The Dillon Center provides the Huskers with six outstanding indoor courts along with 12 well-lit championship-caliber outdoor courts on Nebraska’s Innovation Campus.

Last season, the Huskers produced eight victories at their new home on their way to a 14-13 overall record and a No. 66 ITA final national ranking.

The 2017 Huskers will feature a drastically different look in the lineup from a year ago, following the graduation of three-time All-Big Ten singles player Dusty Boyer. Fellow seniors Marc Herrmann, Andrew Dzulynsky, Scott Elsass, Chris Schindler and Bradford Zitsch also matriculated through the Husker program.

Although the Huskers will be young from top to bottom in their lineup, McDermott sees plenty of promise in his young team.

“We are going to be a very young team with not much experience, but that doesn’t keep us from competing at a high level and wanting to work hard each and every day to get better,” McDermott said. “We think we have the ability to finish higher than last year. We think we can be ranked in the top 45 nationally at the end of the year, and we think we can make the NCAA Tournament.”

Toby Boyer is expected to be a leader among the young Huskers. The sophomore from Ham Lake, Minn., finished with a 21-11 singles record, primarily at the No. 3 and 4 spots, as a true freshman. He also teamed with his older brother, Dusty, for a 16-3 mark as Nebraska’s top doubles tandem.

Toby Boyer, who won the Big Ten Doubles Championship alongside his brother in the fall of 2015, was also the Big Ten Singles Runner-Up at the Individual Championships.

With a strong summer and fall of training and competition, Boyer hopes to provide strong play near the top of the Husker lineups.

Another second-year Husker, sophomore Tomislav Antoljak, could also find a spot high in the Husker lineup.

Antoljak posted an 11-11 record as a freshman in the spring of 2016, including three Big Ten victories. He also went 4-2 in doubles play alongside three different 2016 Husker seniors. He could be a contender to join Boyer atop Nebraska’s doubles lineup after playing alongside each other at the ITA Central Regional Championship. However, Antoljak also teamed with freshman Chris Dean at the Big Ten Individual Championships. Antoljak’s versatility could give McDermott options to adjust both his singles and doubles lineups throughout the season.

Although he’s just a sophomore, Toby Boyer enters the 2017 season as Nebraska’s most experienced player.

Last season, Boyer was a doubles champion and a singles runner-up at the Big Ten Individual Championships.

Redshirt sophomore Rok Krizaj could also make a difference in the Husker lineup, although he did not play during the fall of 2016.

Krizaj did get off to a strong start academically for the Huskers, posting a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring of 2016.

Although he is one of four newcomers on the eight-player Husker roster, redshirt sophomore Jon Meyer could make a major impact for Nebraska in 2017. The Lincoln Southwest High School graduate competed as a true freshman at Wichita State in 2015, before redshirting for the Shockers last season. Meyer went 4-0 in singles action as a freshman. During the fall of 2016, Meyers competed alongside freshman Chris Dean in doubles play at the ITA Central Regional Championship.

Redshirt freshman Micah Klousia built strength while honing his skills last season.

During the fall of 2016, Klousia recorded singles and doubles victories at the Big Ten Individual Championships. He also competed in the ITA Regional Championship in doubles and singles. He teamed with true freshman David Samardzija in doubles play throughout the fall.

Dean, a freshman from Papillion, was the 2014 Nebraska Class A Singles Champion, after earning runner-up honors in 2013.

“Chris is going to be a very good college player and already has shown the coaches that his style of play and competitiveness will bring

good things to our program in the near future,” McDermott said. “He is the type of kid that after you watch him play you realize that he can do so much more and will only get better.”

Dean competed at the ITA All-American, ITA Central Region and the Big Ten Individual Championships during the fall and produced several solid performances.

Canadian Dylan Bednarczyk is another youngster who produced some solid results during a busy fall. The freshman from Woodbridge, Ontario, led the Huskers with a trio of victories at the Big Ten Individual Championships.

Bednarczyk, who chose Nebraska over several other Big Ten Conference programs including Illinois, Michigan State and Ohio State, could make an immediate impression in the Husker lineup.

“Dylan was a highly recruited player for us, and we are looking for him to come in and make an impact in our program,” McDermott said. “He will need time to adjust to college life, studying, and the day-to-day grind of college practices and conditioning to reach his potential. He has lots of experience as a junior competing all over the world.”

David Samardzija rounds out a strong freshman class. The Croatian provides a strong, physical presence on the court. His athleticism makes him a threat to contribute immediately.

YOUNG TEAM READY TO TAKE ON SEASON “David is a freshman from Zagreb, Croatia who we feel can make an impact in our program right away, but also will need some time to adjust to college life and the grind of day-to-day practices, study table and being on a team,” McDermott said. “He has a very good work ethic and his style of play will benefit us in both singles and doubles.”

Traditionally, Nebraska has played a rigorous non-conference schedule to prepare for the highly ranked teams in the Big Ten, and that tradition will continue in the spring of 2017.

After opening the season at the Dillon Tennis Center against Omaha on Jan. 21, the Huskers will compete in one of the nation’s most prestigious events - the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

“The ITA Kickoff Weekend includes the top 64 teams in the country, so we will get a chance right from the start to play Wake Forest (Jan. 27) who will be a top 10 team and give ourselves a chance to see where we are at in the beginning of the spring.”

After playing a second match at the ITA Kickoff against either Auburn or Georgia State, the Huskers continue road action at Oregon (Feb. 10) before playing Fresno State in Eugene (Feb. 11).

Nebraska closes a six-match road swing at Utah (Feb. 17) before also playing New Mexico in Salt Lake City (Feb. 19).

The Big Red will spend most of the next month at the Dillon Tennis Center, beginning with a home match against UMKC (Feb. 25). The Husker home stand includes Creighton (March 2), the Big Ten opener with Iowa (March 10), Toledo (March 17) and Wichita State (March 17).

After a quick trip to Drake (March 22), the Huskers return home to take on Minnesota (March 24).

Following a road trip to Wisconsin (March 26), the Huskers complete a stretch of eight home matches in 10 competitions by hosting Penn State (March 31) and Ohio State (April 2).

Four consecutive road matches at Northwestern (April 7), Illinois (April 9), Indiana (April 14) and Purdue (April 16), will set up Nebraska’s final home weekend at the Dillon Tennis Center against Michigan State (April 21) and Michigan (April 23) before heading to the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. (April 27-30).

In all, nine of Nebraska’s regular-season Big Ten foes closed 2016 in the final ITA top 75.

“We are very determined that we can and will improve as the year goes along, and our main focus will be about getting better each and every day,” McDermott said. “We will work on the day-to-day things that will make us a better team. Our priorities will be team work, hard work and determination. We will keep focused at practice each day, and make sure we take care of little things that add up to making our team reach its potential at the end of the year.”

McDermott owns the second-longest tenure among active Big Ten coaches, while his 389 career victories are the most in the history of Nebraska tennis. In fact, only one other coach, Ed Higginbotham (1951-72), recorded 100 career victories.

McDermott owns a 389-414 career record.

More impressively, McDermott guided the Huskers to backto-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2011 and has led Nebraska to six final top-75 ITA national rankings since 2009. In fact, the Huskers have finished the season ranked among the ITA top 75 in 10 of the last 12 seasons.

Nebraska closed its first season in the new Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center with a 14-13 overall record that included a 4-7 Big Ten mark. The Huskers finished No. 66 in the ITA rankings after splitting a pair of matches at the 2016 Big Ten Tournament. Senior Dusty Boyer led the Huskers by capturing All-Big Ten accolades for the third consecutive season.

In addition to their success on the court, the 2016 Huskers captured Nebraska’s Herman Team GPA Award, which is presented annually to the Husker men’s program with the best combined grade-point average. The 2016 Huskers posted a 3.418 GPA to win the award for the seventh time in 20 years.

With a record of 11-14 in 2015, McDermot pushed the Huskers to a 3-8 Big Ten mark. In 2014, McDermott led a young Husker team to a 12-15 overall record and a 3-8 Big Ten mark with Boyer leading the way.

In 2012, McDermott NU in its first year in the Big Ten Conference. He guided the Huskers to an 11-15 overall record and a 3-8 conference mark, as NU finished No. 73 in the ITA rankings. McDermott had two players earn All-Big Ten honors.

Christopher Aumueller captured first-team All-Big Ten honors while Benedikt Lindheim added a second-team All-Big Ten award. Aumueller and Lindheim teamed up on the doubles court to finish the season ranked No. 26 after competing in the 2012 NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship.

Nebraska finished 15-12 and closed the 2011 season at No. 44 in the ITA rankings after a narrow 4-3 loss to Miami in the NCAA first round. Aumueller earned a spot on the All-Big 12 team as a singles competitor, while joining partner Andre Stenger on the All-Big 12 doubles team.

McDermott’s 2010 Husker team finished No. 41 in the ITA rankings with a 13-12 record after claiming the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid. NU fell to North Carolina 4-1 in the first round, but helped propel the Huskers to a repeat bid in 2011.

NCAA Tournament appearances and national rankings are just a small part of McDermott’s successful career at Nebraska.

McDermott’s players regularly refer to his character and commitment to them off the court. McDermott routinely recruits individuals who are focused on team success, and he serves as an invaluable resource to young men in navigating their paths to maturity and graduation.

In the classroom, Nebraska annually places student-athletes on academic all-conference teams and contends for the Herman Award, which is presented each year at Nebraska to the men’s and women’s teams with the top GPA. McDermott’s men’s tennis teams have captured the award seven times (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2016).

In 2012, Aumueller, Lindheim and Sock earned spots on the academic All-Big Ten team. Aumueller added NU’s first-ever Big Ten Sportsmanship award and claimed the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award for the Central Region.

Nebraska’s roster regularly features players from around the country and the world. McDermott is committed to keeping Nebraska’s top players at home, while attracting some of the best competitors from the Midwest and Big Ten region.

McDermott also has had great success throughout his career in bringing top talent from overseas.

After completing his playing career at Nebraska in 1980, McDermott earned his first career win as the Husker coach in 1982 and quickly started his climb up the NU coaching ledger.

That early success was realized behind a solid foundation of players who earned regional and national acclaim. The leader of that group and one of the top players in the nation each of his last two seasons was Steven Jung. After earning a berth in the NCAA Championships for three consecutive seasons, Jung is the most decorated athlete in NU men’s tennis history.

Jung is the only player in Nebraska history to earn AllAmerica status, after he finished his career as the runner-up at the 1989 NCAA Tournament. Under McDermott’s guidance, Jung entered the tournament ranked No. 16 in the country, the highest regular-season ranking for a Husker in history.

Jung also reached the NCAA Tournament in doubles play that season, teaming with his brother, Stuart, to rank as high as 12th in the nation. Steven Jung finished his career as the Nebraska career wins leader with 114. He was also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, contributing to Nebraska’s all-sport record total of 327 entering 2017.

In 1988, McDermott earned Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year honors by guiding the Huskers to a second-place finish in the league standings with a 5-1 record. Nebraska finished the season with a 14-6 dual mark, one of 18 seasons under McDermott that NU has recorded at least 10 dual match victories.

McDermott pulled double duty during the 1988 season, as he also crossed over to coach the Husker women’s team for one year. He helped the Huskers to a fifth-place finish in the league standings despite a 5-12 overall record. McDermott’s Huskers came back to post a 17-7 record in 1989, the best winning percentage (.708) during his tenure. The Huskers matched the school-record mark with 17 victories again in 1990.

Over the years, McDermott has tutored 11 Huskers through the regular season into the NCAA Championships. Four of the national tournament appearances have been in singles action, with the most recent coming in 2002. Five other appearances have come on the doubles court.

McDermott has continually pushed the Huskers to excel

on and off the court. He has helped 12 singles players and five doubles teams earn conference championships, with the most recent coming at the end of the 2000 campaign, as Ryan Haith grabbed the top spot in the Big 12 at No. 6 singles.

After struggling in the mid-1990s, the Huskers have recorded at least nine dual victories in 17 of the past 18 seasons.

In 2009, McDermott led the Huskers to a 16-10 record and a final ranking of No. 68. It was the second-best win total in school history, trailing only the 1990 squad that captured 17 victories. From 2009 to 2012, the Huskers began each season ranked in the top 50. In 2010 the squad began their campaign ranked 41st, and in 2011 the Huskers started the year ranked 42nd. They began the 2012 season ranked No. 40.

McDermott also has helped Nebraska singles and doubles players achieve spots in the national rankings.

Aumueller, a four-year standout who completed one of the most successful careers in school history in 2012, finished among the top 100 in the national rankings in each of his four seasons on the court. Aumueller closed his freshman season at No. 97 in 2009, before climbing to a final ranking of No. 85 in 2010. In 2011, he finished further up the ladder at No. 75, before closing his senior season at No. 70.

Aumueller, who is in his fourth season assisting the Husker staff in 2014-15, also was a standout on the doubles court. In fact, he and Lindheim entered the 2012 season as the No. 7 doubles team in the nation before eventually earning a trip to the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championships.

Aumueller made history for the Huskers as a senior, as Nebraska’s first-ever first-team All-Big Ten selection, while Lindheim added a second-team award. The duo also finished the season at No. 26 in the national rankings. In 2009, Aumueller was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Other Huskers to earn national rankings since 2002 include: Lance Mills (99th, 2002); Florian Preissler (78th, 2003), Adrian Szatmary (78th, 2007; 115th, 2005); Calin Paar (70th, 2009; 128th, 2008); David Bendheim (67th, 2009); Andre Stenger/ Robert Schulze (44th, 2012).

Arguably one of the program’s greatest upsets came in the spring of 2005, when McDermott led the Huskers to a win over No. 16 Rice in the first dual match of the season, which also gave McDermott his 250th career win. Initially unranked as a team, the win helped push the Huskers into the national polls where they stayed for 13 weeks, ranking as high as No. 55.

In 2003, Nebraska reeled off a seven-match win streak early in the season behind Florian Preissler (13 singles wins) and freshman D.J. Geatz (14 singles wins). The previous season, NU’s Jose Hernan also reached the 14-win total while helping the team finish with a No. 72 ranking. Hernan’s teammate, Lance Mills, became the first Husker to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament in a decade, where he advanced to the second round of the championship. The Omaha native finished the 2002 season ranked No. 99 in singles play after posting a 1-1 record at the national tournament.

McDermott began his relationship with the NU men’s tennis program as a player. He competed for the Huskers from 1976 to 1980, and lettered all four years before playing No. 1 singles as a senior. A native of Grand Island, Neb., McDermott is married to the former Terrie Wade, also of Grand Island. In his spare time, McDermott competes in local and state tennis tournaments and is an avid runner who races competitively.

In 2003, McDermott won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs for his age group at the Cornhusker State Games, and he picked up a bronze medal in the 5-mile road race. For his accomplishments, McDermott was named the Cornhusker State Games Male Athlete of the Year. McDermott also earned the National Congress of State Games Male Athlete of the Year award in 2003, recognizing him for his distance running achievements and participation in various activities over 20 years at the Cornhusker State Games. McDermott also served as the Director of the Cornhusker State Games in 2006.

FUNGAI TONGOONA Associate Head Coach Fifth Season Nebraska (2003)

Fungai Tongoona enters his fifth season coaching the Huskers alongside Head Coach Kerry McDermott in 2016-17.

Originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, Tongoona was a four-year letterman for McDermott and the Huskers from 1999 through 2002. He returned to Nebraska for the start of the 2012-13 season

as an assistant coach. He spent four seasons as an assistant before being promoted to associate head coach in 2016-17.

“Fungai has done an outstanding job for me over the last few years and continues to pursue excellence on and off the court with our men’s tennis program,” McDermott said.

In 2015-16, Tongoona helped Nebraska to a 14-13 record that included four wins over ranked foes. The Huskers battled to a 4-7 record in the Big Ten, while Dusty Boyer earned first-team AllBig Ten honors for the third straight season. Boyer was also a three-time academic All-Big Ten choice.

Tongoona helped Dusty and Toby Boyer to a Big Ten Indoor Doubles Championship in the fall of 2015, while aiding Toby Boyer’s run to a Big Ten Indoor Singles runner-up finish.

Off the court, the Huskers earned Nebraska’s 2016 Herman Team GPA Award by posting a cumulative 3.418 grade-point average.

Tongoona also helped the Huskers transition into Nebraska’s fantastic new Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center, which features championshipcaliber indoor and outdoor courts and facilities.

In 2015, the Huskers managed an 11-14 record and a 3-8 Big Ten mark while Dusty Boyer earned All-Big Ten honors. It followed a 12-15 record and

3-8 Big Ten showing in 2014, when Boyer was AllBig Ten for the first time.

In Tongoona’s first season as an assistant with the Husker program In 2013, Nebraska battled to a 10-15 record and a 2-9 Big Ten mark. The Huskers finished the season ranked No. 62 in the final ITA standings for 2013.

A two-year captain as a player for the Huskers in 2001 and 2002, Tongoona capped his Nebraska playing career with a 12-16 singles mark and a 1712 record in doubles as a senior. He was named the men’s tennis lifter-of-the-year as a sophomore in 1999-00 and was a second-team academic AllBig 12 performer. Off the court, he also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board during his time at Nebraska and was honored by the Big 12 with a community outreach award in 2000. He graduated with a degree in marketing and minor in French from Nebraska in 2003.

Tongoona has been a certified tennis teaching professional since 2002, serving as head professional at Southlake (Texas) Tennis Center, as well as the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln.

Prior to returning to Lincoln, Tongoona served as the teaching professional at the DFW Hilton in Grapevine, Texas. He is also certified as a personal trainer and Tennis Trainer.

NIKOLA ANDJELIC Volunteer Assistant Coach Second Season Nikola Andjelic joins the Nebraska men’s tennis coaching staff for his second season in 2017, after helping the Huskers produce a 14-13 record and a No. 66 final ITA ranking in 2016.

He also aided Dusty Boyer’s run to a third straight All-Big Ten accolade in 2016.

Andjelic owns extensive experience at several levels, including working with international, collegiate and professional tennis players.

In addition to serving as an assistant coach at West Virginia, Andjelic worked at the Academia Sanchez-Casal in Naples, Fla. He was also the director of human performance at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Washington, D.C. Andjelic has experience with major competitions including multiple Grand Slams, Premier Events, WTA Tour events and many others, which Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott

said should provide major benefits to the Husker program.

“We are very anxious and excited to have Nikola Andjelic working with our program as a volunteer coach,” McDermott said. “His experience with professional tennis players from around the world will be very valuable to our program. Shawn Eichorst was recruited and hired by the University of Nebraska in 2012 and quickly displayed an incredible passion for the University and for its student-athletes as well as the State of Nebraska. As the leader of a tradition-rich athletic program with 24 intercollegiate teams, 600-plus student-athletes and more than 325 full-time employees, Eichorst has relied on a strong value system and a student-centered approach to lead the department. Nebraska’s primary mission is to provide student-athletes with the resources and support they need to be successful in academics, athletics and life. The health, safety and welfare of student-athletes are priority one and the essence of every decision made at Nebraska. Since Eichorst arrived in Lincoln, resources and services in every student-athlete support unit have been reviewed, improved and enhanced, including academics, athletic medicine, life skills, nutrition, sports psychology, strength and conditioning and performance/research (i.e. Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) and the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3)).

Eichorst has continued to move Nebraska forward aggressively with several new initiatives to enhance the student-athlete experience. Beginning in the summer of 2015, Nebraska became the first athletic department in the country to offer laptop computers to every student-athlete and created a data analytics department. Husker student-athletes in all sports now receive four-year, full cost of attendance-based scholarships.

Nebraska was also the first-known department of athletics to create a post-eligibility opportunity (PEO) program, where every Husker letterwinner who graduates and has exhausted his or her eligibility has an opportunity to pursue either an internship, study abroad or graduate school program valued at $7,500.

Nebraska was also one of the first institutions to create a spring service abroad trip, taking a team of student-athletes and staff to Guatemala in 2015 and to the Dominican Republic in 2016.

Eichorst is in high demand and has made more than 500 public appearances around the state and country and his monthly radio show and “Connecting on Campus” online column provide opportunities to connect and share the incredible activities, initiatives and accomplishments happening at the

greater University and in the department. As a member of the Chancellor’s Senior Administrative Team, Eichorst maintains a strong connection and collaboration between the University and athletics.

A highly respected national leader, Eichorst was appointed in 2015 to the Division I Football Oversight Committee. Most recently, Eichorst was named co-chair of the NCAA Division I Football Recruiting ad hoc working group. He also serves on the Big Ten Conference Program and Budget Review Committee.

Eichorst was the first Director of Athletics from any conference to visit the Big Ten Conference-based Academic Alliance (formerly known as the Committee on Institutional Cooperation) at its Champaign, Ill., headquarters. The Big Ten Academic Alliance is a highly successful academic-based consortium of 15 schools, including all 14 in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska is leading the Big Ten and the Big Ten Academic Alliance in several areas, including Digital Humanities and head injury research.

Under Eichorst, Nebraska extended its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to 325 and its nation-leading total of NCAA Top Ten Award winners to 17. More than 700 awards were presented at the 26th Annual Student-Athlete Awards Show—A Night at the Lied. In 2015-16, 109 studentathletes earned undergraduate or graduate degrees and the Big Ten Conference honored 209 Husker student-athletes with Academic All-Big Ten awards. For the first time in school history, all Nebraska teams had an NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 960 or higher and the overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 86 percent is the highest in program history. In addition, seven Husker teams (women’s basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, tennis and volleyball and men’s tennis) had a GSR of 100 percent as reported in the fall of 2015.

During Eichorst’s tenure, Nebraska has won three NCAA team Championships, increasing its total to 27. In 2012-13 and in 201415, the Nebraska women’s bowling team earned the program’s fourth and fifth NCAA titles, while the Husker volleyball team won the 2015 NCAA Championship, the program’s fourth national title.

In 2016, the Husker men’s track and field team swept the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championships and 14 Nebraska teams competed in NCAA postseason action, including bowling, football, volleyball, women’s swimming and diving, wrestling, softball, baseball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, rifle, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. In 201516, Nebraska produced 41 All-Americans who won 49 national awards, including 21 first-team honorees.

In 2013-14, Nebraska became one of only two NCAA institutions – and the first Big Ten program in history – to qualify for a football bowl game, and advance to NCAA postseason in the major team sports of volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Additionally, Nebraska was the only institution to win a postseason game in six of those seven sports.

Nebraska’s fan support continues to be unparalleled in college athletics. In 2015-16, top 15 national rankings for average attendance were reached across 10 sports—football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, soccer, softball, baseball and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Nebraska is the only school in the country to rank among the top 15 nationally in both football and men’s basketball attendance and in volleyball and women’s basketball. A tribute to loyal Husker fans, two sports lead the nation with consecutive home sellout streaks. Football has 347 consecutive sellouts and volleyball has 204 consecutive regular-season sellouts.

Under Eichorst’s leadership, Nebraska continues to focus on improving its facilities and the game-day experience at all athletic venues. In August of 2015, Hibner Stadium and Barbara Hibner Field for soccer and the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center were completed. A new center-hung video board and sound system was installed in the Devaney Center in 2015 to improve the game-day experience for volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s gymnastics. In 2014, the largest wireless network system at a college football stadium in history was installed in Memorial Stadium, along with a state-of-the-art sound system.

In the summer of 2013, Memorial Stadium expansion added the

innovative NAPL inside East Stadium next to the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3). That same year, Nebraska’s men’s and women’s basketball teams became the primary tenants at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and the renovated Devaney Center became the home for Husker volleyball, wrestling and the men’s and women’s gymnastics programs.

Eichorst came to Nebraska after serving as Director of Athletics at Miami in 2011 and 2012. He hired legendary men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga, who led Miami to the NIT Second Round in his first season and ACC regular-season and tournament titles as well and the NCAA Sweet 16 in his second. The women’s basketball program posted its highest national ranking in school history (No. 5) and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Miami women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight season, and the baseball team made its 40th consecutive NCAA appearance. The Hurricane women’s soccer team posted its first NCAA Tournament win in school history, and the volleyball team made its third straight NCAA Tournament trip.

Before heading to Miami, Eichorst was the Deputy Athletics Director at Wisconsin. He was the Chief Operating Officer and oversaw the department’s daily operations, as well as the men’s basketball program under the direction of Director of Athletics and former Husker Barry Alvarez.

From 2004 to 2006, Eichorst served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration at South Carolina, overseeing the department’s daily operations, as well as the football and baseball programs under legendary coaches Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier and Ray Tanner, respectively.

From 1999 to 2003, Eichorst served as the Director of Athletics at Wisconsin-Whitewater, which produced four top 10-percent finishes in the NACDA Directors Cup, one NCAA team title and two NCAA runner-up finishes. The program also featured 11 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections.

A native of Lone Rock, Wis., Eichorst was an all-conference defensive back, three-time letterwinner and 1990 football team captain for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He graduated magna cum laude in business from UW-Whitewater in 1990 and in 2015 was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement. He earned a law degree from Marquette Law School in 1995, practiced law in Milwaukee until 1999 and is a past member of the State Bar of Wisconsin Board of Governors. He served as an assistant adjunct professor of law at Marquette, where he taught classes in sports law.

He serves on the Marquette University National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors and in 2006, Marquette awarded Eichorst the Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award. He is also a graduate of the Sports Management Institute and serves on its Executive Committee.

STEVE WATERFIELD Executive Associate A.D./Performance & Strategic Research

Steve Waterfield joined the Nebraska Athletics Department in August of 2013 as a Senior Associate Athletics Director in charge of Performance and Strategic Research.

A member of the Athletics Department’s Senior Management Team, Waterfield assists Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst with the administration of the football program and serves as the sports administrator for men’s and women’s tennis. He also oversees athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, Lewis Training Table, the Nebraska Athletics Performance Laboratory (NAPL) and strategic research and sports analytics.

Waterfield is the athletics department liaison to the institution’s Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3), located in the East Stadium Research Facility.

Waterfield joined Nebraska after two years as a senior administrator at Miami. While in Coral Gables, Waterfield oversaw sports medicine, strategic operations, facilities and maintenance, capital projects and construction, along with the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Halfway through his tenure, Waterfield’s responsibilities changed slightly. He added strength and conditioning and human resources in place of facilities and maintenance and capital projects and construction. He also became football’s direct sports administrator, in place of women’s basketball.

Prior to Miami, Waterfield spent seven years at Wisconsin, serving under Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez as an Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. Waterfield oversaw compliance, academic services and sports medicine, while also serving as sport administrator for the men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Waterfield went to Wisconsin after spending five years as an Assistant Director of Compliance at Ohio State.

Waterfield holds a law degree, a master’s in business administration and a master’s in sports management from Ohio State and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Kenyon College. He is a member of the Ohio bar and U.S. Federal District Court and worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Ohio Attorney General’s office.

Steve and his wife, Jaime, have two sons, Davis and Austin.

MARC BOEHM

Executive Associate A.D./Development & Events

A member of Nebraska’s administration since May 2003, Marc Boehm (pronounced BAME) serves as Executive Associate Athletic Director for Development, Ticketing and Events. Boehm oversees the Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs. Boehm serves as the liaison to Pinnacle Bank Arena, the NU Foundation and the Nebraska Alumni Association.

Boehm, who previously oversaw the efforts of the facilities, marketing, media relations and HuskerVision areas within the athletic department, played a primary role in negotiations for Nebraska’s contract extension with IMG College Sports. To date, it is the largest multimedia rights contract in college athletics.

Boehm also played a lead role during the men’s and women’s basketball programs move into Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2013-14. He also worked to help develop Nebraska’s new practice facility - the Hendricks Training Complex - which opened in October of 2011.

Boehm has worked to create a fan-friendly atmosphere at men’s and women’s basketball, leading to record-setting attendances and season ticket sales for both programs.

In 2013-14, the men’s basketball program sold out its season tickets for the entire year in May of 2013 in anticipation of the first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The more than 15,000 Husker fans that packed the new arena watched the Big Red roll to a 15-1 home record on their way to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. It was the fifth postseason trip for the men’s basketball program since Boehm’s arrival.

NU ranked 13th nationally in average home attendance (15,419) on its way to a top-four finish with an 11-7 record in the powerful Big Ten, while going 19-13 overall.

Under Boehm’s supervision, the Nebraska women’s basketball program has enjoyed the most success stretch in school history, earning six NCAA Tournament bids, including a pair of NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in 2010 and 2013. The Huskers have produced the four highest single-season win totals in NU history over the past six years. The Big Red have finished the season ranked in the top 25 in four of the past six seasons - the first four top-25 final national rankings in school history.

In 2013-14, Nebraska won its first-ever women’s basketball conference tournament title, claiming the Big Ten crown with a 3-0 run in Indianapolis.

Boehm also played a lead role in bringing NCAA Tournament basketball to Lincoln for the first time since 1993, as the Husker women played host to the NCAA Lincoln Regional. Eventual national champion UConn, Texas A&M, DePaul and BYU battled for a spot in the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four. The two sessions attracted well over 17,000 fans.

During the regular season, the Husker women ranked No. 8 nationally in total home attendance with more than 110,000 fans flocking to the arena as the Huskers tied a school record with 16 home victories. NU’s average home attendance of 6,161 fans per game ranked 11th in the country. Nebraska has ranked among the top 12 teams nationally in women’s basketball home attendance in each of its first three seasons in Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Boehm, who played a significant role in aiding Nebraska’s functional transition to the Big Ten

Conference in 2011-12, was also instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the Husker Nation Pavilion, which is the premier pregame event around home football games.

Boehm also took the lead role in obtaining First National Bank and Ameritas as premier sponsors for the Nebraska Athletic Department for a combined deal worth more than $7 million over a three-year period.

First National Bank and Ameritas joined Verizon, Pepsi and adidas as premier corporate sponsors for Husker athletics.

Boehm held the same position at Pittsburgh from 1997 to 2003. Boehm assisted in the rise of the Panthers’ basketball program with the men’s team posting back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. During construction of the Panthers’ new athletic facilities, Boehm played a central role in Pitt’s athletic teams moving to the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center.

Boehm served as interim athletic director at Pittsburgh for nearly five months before coming to NU. During that time, he hired men’s basketball head coach Jamie Dixon.

Boehm also spent five years as associate executive director of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He directed and managed a 125-member fund-raising committee of Arizona business people responsible for generating more than $4.5 million in cash and in-kind partnerships.

Previously he spent four years as associate executive director and public relations director of the Sun Bowl from 1987 to 1991.

Born in Grand Island, Boehm earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Kansas State in 1984 and added a master’s degree in sports management from St. Thomas (Fla.) University in 1985. Boehm and his wife, the former Janelle Broderick of Minot, N.D., have three boys, Broderick, Christian and Lukas John.

Antoljak elected to attend college in the United States and chose Nebraska over several other Big Ten schools, including Wisconsin and Purdue.

The son of Vedran and Irena Antoljak, Tomislav was born on Nov. 11, 1996 in Croatia. Tomislav has one younger brother, Marko, 14. Tomislav is majoring in finance and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2016.

Tomislav Antoljak returns as one of Nebraska’s most experienced players in 2017, despite being a true sophomore in the Husker lineup.

As a freshman in 2015-16, Antoljak produced an 11-14 singles mark on the season, including an 11-11 record during the spring. He added a 6-3 doubles record during the 2015-16 campaign.

With a year of experience under his belt, the Croatian is expected to play in the heart of Nebraska’s singles lineup.

“Tomislav gained a lot of valuable experience for us playing in the lineup last year, mainly in the No. 5 and 6 spots,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “He is still developing both as a player and a student. He plays an aggressive style that suits his personality but has realized that he needs to be patient with his game and wait for opportunities.”

Antoljak produced an 11-14 overall record as a freshman, including an 11-11 mark during the spring. He went 3-6 in singles action against Big Ten competition.

On the doubles court, Antoljak notched a 6-3 record on the season that included a 4-2 mark in the spring. He teamed with 2016 Husker seniors Chris Schindler, Marc Herrmann and Bradford Zitsch at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Antoljak was 0-1 in Big Ten doubles action.

In the classroom, Antoljak earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2016.

TOBY BOYER

Sophomore Ham Lake, Minnesota (Forest Lake)

2016-17: OUTLOOK

Arguably the most experienced Husker although he’s just a sophomore, Toby Boyer will be counted on to compete near the top of Nebraska’s singles and doubles lineups in 2017.

The talented competitor from Ham Lake, Minn., earned 21 singles wins and added 21 more in doubles play as a true freshman in 2015-16.

Perhaps his top accomplishment was capturing a doubles title alongside his threetime All-Big Ten brother, Dusty, at the Big Ten Individual Championships in the fall of 2015.

Toby then added a runner-up finish in singles at the Big Ten Individual Championships just days later.

“Toby is a top player who will make an impact on our team as a sophomore,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “He is a very determined and hard-working player who is willing to go the extra mile to improve and commit to our program. We are very happy to have Toby on

He won a ton of matches for us and is a clutch player who thrives under pressure, and we look for Toby to continue to improve and make big strides in our program.”

2015-16: FRESHMAN

Boyer concluded his freshman season with a 15-8 singles record, playing primarily out of the No. 3 position. He battled to a 2-7 mark in Big Ten play.

Boyer played in Nebraska’s top doubles pair alongside his older brother, Dusty. The duo went 21-4 overall, including 16-3 in the spring.

They posted a solid 6-3 Big Ten mark.

The Boyer brothers had a successful run at the Big Ten Individual Championships in the fall of 2015, winning the doubles title. Toby also reached the final of the singles championship, finishing second.

In the classroom, Boyer earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2015.

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Boyer graduated from Forest Lake High School. In 2015 Boyer was the AA Minnesota high school state champion in singles and ranked No. 35 nationally.

PERSONAL

The son of David and Gina Boyer, Toby was born on June 6, 1996. Toby has an older brother, Dusty, who was a three-time All-Big Ten selection as a four-year letterwinner on the Nebraska men’s tennis team. Dusty graduated from Nebraska in May of 2016. Toby is majoring in business administration and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2015.

2016-17: OUTLOOK

Micah Klousia could contend for a spot in the Nebraska lineup as a redshirt freshman in the spring of 2017.

One of the top players in the Missouri Valley region as a junior player, Klousia is still growing his game at Nebraska after a successful career at Glendale High School in Springfield, Mo. With some fall play under his belt, Klousia’s skills and confidence have grown heading into his first competitive season on the court for the Huskers.

“Micah redshirted last year in order to get stronger and adapt to college life, and we feel we have already seen a significant improvement from last year,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “He played some tournaments this past summer that helped him get some good match play and develop a competitive drive, which he will need to help this team as we head into our dual matches this spring.”

McDermott said with continued hard work, Klousia could play a significant role for the Huskers in 2017 and beyond.

“Micah is just starting to reach his potential, but he will need to continue to push himself and believe in himself. We feel good things will happen for him and the team in the future.”

2015-16: REDSHIRT

Klousia redshirted in his first season at Nebraska. On the court, he worked to improve his skill while building strength and endurance.

In the classroom, Klousia earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2016.

Redshirt sophomore Rok Krizaj could make a major impact in Nebraska’s lineup in both singles and doubles play in 2017.

Krizaj transferred to Nebraska prior to the spring semester of 2016, but did not compete while redshirting. He spent time at the University of Ljubljana in his home country of Slovenia before joining the Huskers.

“Rok is also a redshirt who will be eligible this year starting in January of 2017 to play for the team,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said.

“He is a very hard-working guy who continues to develop in our program. We expect Rok to push for a starting spot in the lineup. Hopefully he can contribute to our doubles lineup with his aggressive serve and good sense of the doubles court.”

2015-16: REDSHIRT

Krizaj joined the Nebraska men’s tennis program prior to the start of the spring semester. He redshirted in his first season with the Huskers.

He enjoyed a strong start academically, posting a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the spring of 2016 to earn a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Krizaj came to Nebraska from the University of Ljubljana. In Slovenia, Krizaj was a two-time

national champion in the 16 and under category in singles and doubles action. He added a Slovenian national title in singles as an 18 and under competitor. Krizaj was also a two-time national doubles champion in the U18 division.

He was named the Best Young Player in Slovenia in 2013. Krizaj said he chose to come to Nebraska because of the outstanding athletic and academic programs.

PERSONAL

The son of Igor and Tjasa Krizaj, Rok was born on Jan. 28, 1996, in Sempeter Pri Gorici. Rok has a younger sister, Julija, 19. He is majoring in management in the college of business administration and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2016 after posting a perfect 4.0 gradepoint average in his first semester.

JON MEYER

2016-17: OUTLOOK

As a sophomore transfer, Jon Meyer is expected to bring college game experience and determination to the team this season.

Although he is in his first season at Nebraska, Meyer will be one of Nebraska’s most experienced players in 2017, after competing for nationally ranked Wichita State as a freshman in 2014-15.

Meyer, a 2014 graduate of Lincoln Southwest High School, sat out the 2015-16 season as a redshirt for the Shockers before transferring to Nebraska prior to the 2016-17 season.

His collegiate experience could help him contend for a lineup spot for the Huskers this spring.

“Jon is a transfer from Wichita State who has three years of eligibility to compete for our team,” Coach Kerry McDermott said. “Jon is a very hard worker who continues to show improvement at practice and just needs more match play to improve.”

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Meyer appeared in four duals as a freshman for nationally ranked Wichita State in 201415, posting a perfect 4-0 singles record. He redshirted as a sophomore at Wichita State in 2015-16.

Meyer graduated from Lincoln Southwest High School in 2014.

In 2013, Meyer played No. 1 singles and helped Lincoln Southwest to its first state championship. He produced a 27-6 singles record his senior year. He also earned allconference honors at No. 1 singles in 2013.

The son of Rick and Lisa Meyer, Jon was born in Lincoln on Oct. 4, 1995. He has one older sister Abby, 27. Meyer is majoring in marketing.

DYLAN BEDNARCZYK

Dylan Bednarczyk joins the Nebraska men’s tennis program as a highly sought-after recruit, expected to add a high level of talent and determination to the team.

One of the top young players in Canada, Bednarczyk could make an instant impact in the Husker lineup in the spring of 2017.

“Dylan was a highly recruited player for us, and we are looking for him to come in and make an impact in our program,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “He will need time to adjust to college life, studying, and the day-today grind of college practices and conditioning to reach his potential.”

McDermott said Bednarczyk has excellent potential but was hindered a bit during the summer of 2016.

“Dylan has lots of experience as a junior competing all over the world but lacked match play this past summer, which has kept him playing catch-up right now. We hope he continues to work hard and keep improving on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis in our program.”

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Bednarczyk attended the Niagara Academy of Sports, a specialized school for Universitybound students.

The school focused on high performance sports training and a personalized academic approach.

The son of Marian and Dorota Bednarczyk, Dylan was born on Sept. 7, 1998 in London, Ontario, Canada. Dylan has one older brother Daniel, 22. Dylan is double majoring in finance and economics.

He chose Nebraska over Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, Illinois, Michigan State and Ohio State. He said he chose Nebraska because of the Huskers’ rich tradition in athletics and discipline in academics.

Chris Dean joins the Nebraska men’s tennis team after competing as one of the state’s top players throughout his high school career in the Omaha metro area.

Papillion, Nebraska (Papillion-LaVista South)

Dean was the 2014 Class A state singles champion at Papillion-LaVista South and brings a high level of athleticism and competitiveness to the court each day.

“Chris is going to be a very good college player and already has shown the coaches that his style of play and competitiveness will bring good things to our program in the near future,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “He is the type of kid that after you watch him play you realize that he can do so much more and will only get better.”

McDermott said it may take time for Dean to adjust to collegiate tennis, but Dean’s work ethic could make him a contender for a lineup spot as a freshman.

“I feel that with Chris being on a team with others of his ability or better will bring out the best in his game,” McDermott said. “He will need to continue to work hard and also learn to adjust to college life with making adjustments

to study habits, nutrition and overall dedication to school and tennis.”

Dean graduated from Papillion South High School in Papillion, Nebraska. Chris was the runner up for Class A singles in 2013 and in 2014 was the Class A singles champion under his tennis coach Joseph Cooley. Chris was also the team captain in 2014 and was a first-team all-state selection.

DAVID SAMARDZIJA Freshman Zagreb, Croatia (Sesvete)

David Samardzija is expected to make an instant impact on the Nebraska men’s tennis team in both singles and doubles as a freshman for the Huskers in 2017.

One of the most talented and athletic young players in Croatia, Samardzija joins fellow Croatian Tomislav Antoljak on this season’s Husker roster.

“David is a freshman from Zagreb, Croatia who we feel can make an impact in our program right away,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “We do think he will need some time to adjust to college life and the grind of day-to-day practices, study table and being on a team, but he has a very good work ethic. His style of play will benefit us in both singles and doubles, but he still needs to learn to be patient with his game and develop points if he wants to improve.”

Samardzija competed as a member of the TK Ponikve club team under the direction of Coach Igor Saric.

PERSONAL

The son of Ilija and Zorica Samardzija, David was born in Zagreb, Croatia on April 14, 1997.

He has one brother, Jakov, 15. David is majoring in psychology at Nebraska.

David said he chose Nebraska because of the outstanding facilities and the people.

SENIORS LEAD HUSKERS TO NATIONAL RANKING An accomplished five-member senior class led the Nebraska men’s tennis team in its continued climb up the Big Ten Conference ladder and the national rankings in 2015-16.

The Huskers, who were led by Coach Kerry McDermott in his 35th season at the helm of the Nebraska program, finished with a 1413 overall record and a 4-7 Big Ten mark. A strong showing to close the year at the Big Ten Tournament also propelled the Huskers to a final No. 66 ITA ranking.

“We improved a ton during the year as a team, even though we lost some really close 4-3 matches to ranked teams throughout the year,” McDermott said. “Many teams would have given up, but our team held strong, and in the end we got better and ended up winning four conference matches. We finished in the ITA national rankings, which was one of our team goals to start the year.”

The Huskers, who were led by three-time All-Big Ten selection Dusty Boyer, enjoyed an exciting first season at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on the Nebraska campus.

The Big Red officially christened their new home with a pair of dual wins on Jan. 23, rolling to a 6-1 win over Omaha, before sweeping North Dakota, 7-0, later that same day.

The next weekend, the Huskers welcomed the first of 17 ranked foes to the Dillon Tennis Center, falling to No. 52 Denver (Jan. 29), before losing to No. 46 Oregon (Jan. 31).

After a 6-1 pounding of UMKC at the Dillon Tennis Center on Feb. 7 to complete a fivematch season-opening home stand, the Huskers traveled to No. 67 Wichita State (Feb. 12), suffering the first of four narrow 4-3 losses to ranked foes on the year.

Nebraska bounced back quickly with a 6-1 win over New Mexico State in Wichita the following day, before returning home to sweep Creighton, 7-0 on Feb. 27.

The Huskers suffered a 4-1 home loss to No. 65 Cornell on March 5 to slip to 5-4 overall with all four losses to top 75 foes.

With a third of their spring season behind them, the Huskers opened the season’s next chapter with a six-match winning streak. The impressive stretch began with a road sweep at Omaha (March 5), before opening Big Ten play with a 4-3 win at No. 47 Iowa (March 11).

The Big Red notched their second straight win over a ranked foe with a 4-2 victory over No. 61 Lamar at the Dillon Tennis Center on March 15, before closing a three-match home stand with sweeps of Northern Colorado and Southwest Baptist on March 19.

Nebraska capped its six-match winning streak with an impressive 5-2 win at Minnesota to improve to 2-0 in the Big Ten on March 25. The win over the Golden Gophers also moved NU’s record to 11-4 on the season.

Nebraska battled to the finish but lost 4-3 to the Badgers. The loss to Wisconsin marked the first of eight consecutive matches for the Huskers against top 75 opponents.

The following weekend, the Huskers suffered a similar fate at No. 33 Penn State, dropping a hard-fought 4-3 decision to the Nittany Lions.

Setbacks to top-15 opponents Ohio State, Northwestern and Illinois followed, before Nebraska suffered another 4-3 defeat to No. 49 Drake at the Dillon Tennis Center on April 13.

A narrow, 4-2 setback to No. 70 Indiana closed a seven-match losing streak for the Huskers, before they rebounded with an impressive 4-2 win over No. 59 Purdue on Senior Day in Lincoln on April 15.

A 4-2 road win at Michigan State on April 22 was good enough to secure Nebraska’s place in the Big Ten Tournament, before a loss at Michigan ended the regular season on April 24.

Nebraska avenged its regular-season loss to Wisconsin by beating the No. 57 Badgers, 4-2, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on April 28. The Huskers closed the year with their second loss to No. 4 Ohio State on April 29.

Although the Husker seniors did not advance to the NCAA Tournament, they did achieve a final No. 66 national ranking by notching their fourth win of the season over a ranked foe with the Big Ten Tournament victory over Wisconsin.

The Husker seniors also capped strong careers on the court and in the classroom.

Dusty Boyer earned his third All-Big Ten award on the court while also claiming his third straight academic All-Big Ten honor. He closed his career tied for fourth in school history with 89 singles victories, including a top-10 season total with 24 in 2016.

He also paired with his younger brother, Toby, to earn the doubles title at the Big Ten Individual Championships in the fall of 2015.

The Boyers went 16-3 in spring doubles action including 6-3 as one of the Big Ten’s best duos.

Toby added 21 singles victories to cap an outstanding freshman season to help lay the foundation for the future of the Huskers.

Senior Marc Herrmann added 19 singles wins and 13 doubles victories to cap a strong career. He was also a three-time academic AllBig Ten choice. Another three-time academic All-Big Ten selection, senior Andrew Dzulynsky finished with 17 singles wins and 13 doubles victories as a senior.

Senior Scott Elsass added a third academic All-Big Ten award, while fellow senior Bradford Zitsch earned his second academic All-Big Ten honor. Elsass and Zitsch both claimed prestigious ITA All-Academic honors as well in 2016, along with junior Chris Schindler.

The strong leadership on and off the court helped the Huskers capture Nebraska’s Herman Team GPA Award for the seventh time in history.

The Huskers’ 3.418 team GPA led all Nebraska men’s teams and gave the tennis team its first Herman Award since 2008.

The Nebraska men's tennis program enters its second season at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in 2016-17. Located just north of Nebraska’s Innovation Campus, the elite practice and competition facility will rank among the nation’s best.

The tennis facility includes 12 well-lit outdoor courts and six indoor courts with Olympic-quality surfaces. The indoor facility also has coaches offices, spacious team locker and meeting rooms, and convenient athletic medicine areas.

The indoor and outdoor tennis areas of the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center also feature combined seating for 1,400 spectators and plenty of more space for fans to stand and cheer on all the Huskers.

The world-class facility should help the Husker tennis programs continue their rise in national prominence in the years to come.

Top: The main entrance of the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center faces the new Hibner Soccer Stadium and outdoor tennis courts. The state-of-the-art facility includes 1,400 seats for spectators and features 12 well-lit outdoor courts and six indoor courts.

Middle: Inside the front doors of the tennis center a grand glass staircase leads to men’s and women’s tennis and soccer coaching offices. Also located on the upper level is access to spectator seating for the six indoor tennis courts.

Bottom: The men's tennis locker room includes spacious and stylish wood lockers to house equipment and belongings. The Huskers enjoy inviting locker room and meeting rooms just steps away from new athletic medicine areas.

NATIONAL POWERS

The Nebraska volleyball team captured its fourth NCAA title with a win over Texas in the championship match at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha on Dec. 19, 2015. Five Husker volleyball players, including NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Mikaela Foecke, earned All-America honors in 2015.

Volleyball’s championship was the first of seven top-10 NCAA team finishes for Husker programs in 2015-16.

Ryan Boldt helped the Huskers advance to the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American was chosen in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tierra Williams earned a trio of All-America awards in 2016. She finished fifth in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She also swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor titles in the triple and long jumps.

Nick Percy captured the 2016 NCAA discus crown. The twotime All-American from Ventnor, England, also won the Big Ten discus title to help the Husker men sweep the Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships.

MJ Knighten claimed first-team All-America honors at third base while helping the Nebraska softball team advance to the 2016 NCAA Regional final. Knighten hit .376 with 21 homers and 60 RBIs in 55 games.

Julia Bond earned first-team AllAmerica honors by leading the Nebraska bowling team to an NCAA runner-up finish in 2016.

Bond was the Most Outstanding Bowler in powering NU to the 2015 NCAA team title.

The Nebraska men’s track and field team swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor titles, giving the Big Red their first sweep since 2004. A total of 19 Huskers combined for 24 All-America awards in men’s and women’s track and field in 2016.

M. BASKETBALL 11TH TJ Dudley (184 pounds) took second at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships. NU’s Male Athlete of the Year, Dudley helped the Huskers to eighth place for their 20th top-10 team finish in history.

Kadie Rolfzen captured first-team All-America honors as an outside hitter while leading the Nebraska volleyball team to the 2015 NCAA title. Rolfzen, a three-time All-American, was Nebraska’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Shavon Shields earned secondteam All-Big Ten honors after averaging 16.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in 2015-16. Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Shields was a two-time first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.

A six-time All-American and twotime Big Ten champion for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team in her career, Hollie Blanske took third on vault at the 2016 NCAA Championships to help the Huskers finish eighth.

ATHLETIC MEDICINE

ATHLETIC MEDICINE Providing expert care to more than 600 Husker student-athletes, Nebraska features one of the most well-trained and highly skilled athletic medicine staffs in the country. Under the guidance of Director of Athletic Medicine Dr. Lonnie Albers and Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Jerry Weber, the 2016-17 Nebraska athletic medicine staff consists of five doctors, 13 full-time athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers, a full-time in-house athletic psychologist and sports psychiatry consultants who work directly with student-athletes.

Nebraska’s medical facilities have long been among the nation’s best, and NU’s athletic medicine center within the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex will keep the Huskers on the front line of technology for decades to come. In addition to Nebraska’s North Stadium facility, Haymarket Park, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Pinnacle Bank Arena and the Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex all feature athletic medicine areas. The Devaney Center’s Athletic Medicine facility underwent an extensive expansion as part of the Hendricks Training Complex addition in 2011.

Nebraska uses advanced equipment to help athletes recondition after injury.

Nebraska’s Athletic Medicine Center features a hydrotherapy area that includes a three-level laned pool. The Hydroworx 1000 Treadmill Pool is equipped with two cameras underwater for evaluation and assessment.

The hot and cold plunge tanks in the Holthus Family Hydrotherapy area help the Huskers recover after workouts and injuries.

NAPL: INTEGRATING SPORT

The Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) is recognized as the first performance research center within a collegiate department of athletics. The NAPL features a talented, multidisciplinary team that includes a full-time director and endocrinology lab director, two research post-doctoral fellows and a research analyst.

Located in East Memorial Stadium adjacent to UNL’s Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3), the NAPL collaborates with Nebraska’s Strength and Conditioning team, Husker Nutrition staff, Nebraska’s Athletic Medicine staff and sports programs to offer the highest level of integration of sport performance technologies and systems.

The NAPL is made up of the Mark and Debra Classen Cardio Area, James and Karen Linder Dynamic Performance Center, Markin Family Collaborative Center, Thayer Family Athletic Research Lab and cutting-edge equipment donated by the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation. The main entrance for the research facilities is located in the Janet and Gerard Keating Family Concourse.

Focused on student-athlete health, safety and welfare, the NAPL is a world-leading research and performance facility focusing on the performance enhancement, safety and long-term well-being of student-athletes.

The NAPL includes simulated athletic environments for studying performance, incorporating a camera system to track human movement in 3D, force plates to measure ground reaction forces and state-of-the-art technology to assess physiological biomarkers, investigate exercise cardiovascular capacity and measure body composition.

All 24 Husker athletic programs conduct performance testing at NAPL. Force plates and motion capture videos (3D) are used to measure athletes in their development through testing results to create an athletic performance index for each athlete.

The NAPL uses IDexa as an advanced, accurate and reliable method to analyze and measure body composition.

The focus of the Thayer Family Athletic Research Lab is recovery from competition by measuring salivary biomarkers 24 hours prior to and 24 hours post-competition.

Collaborative research projects are conducted in conjunction with the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3), including concussion prevention, treatment and return to play.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-America awards to 325, adding five Huskers in 2015-16. Senior guard Shavon Shields (Olathe, Kan., Biological Sciences) earned his second consecutive first-team Academic All-America award in men’s basketball before being named Nebraska’s Male StudentAthlete of the Year. Shields (pictured right with Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst) was also a member of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his outstanding community service. He was joined by Nebraska Female Student-Athlete-ofthe-Year Mattie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz., Finance) as a first-team Academic All-American in 2015-16.

Fowler (pictured below) was the President of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Board in 2014-15. She and Shields were Nebraska’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in 2015-16.

The Nebraska men’s track and field team continued its extraordinary run of CoSIDA Academic All-America success with three-time first-team honoree Levi Gipson (Lincoln, Neb., Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science) and fellow first-team award winner Cody Rush (Grand Island, Neb., Nutrition Science). Rush, who earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2014, joined baseball outfielder Ryan Boldt (Red Wing, Minn., Nutrition Science) as a two-time honoree. Boldt also earned third-team recognition in 2015.

Graduation is the ultimate achievement, and 109 Husker student-athletes earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in three commencement exercises at Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2015-16.

A total of 109 Nebraska student-athletes earned their degrees in 2015-16, including 62 in May 2016, 39 in December 2015 and eight in August 2015. Dusty Boyer (above left) earned his bachelor’s degree in May as a communication studies major at Nebraska. A three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and a three-time academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Andrew Dzulynsky also claimed his bachelor’s degree in May as a criminology and criminal justice major. Dzulynsky was a three-time academic All-Big Ten choice and a member of the 2015 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Nebraska student-athletes regularly earn prestigious postgraduate scholarships from the Big Ten and NCAA. That tradition continued in 2015-16, as two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Cody Rush earned a $10,000 Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big Ten before claiming an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship worth $7,500. Rush was also an 11-time All-American.

In 2015-16, 109 Huskers earned their college degrees including senior track and field standout Levi Gipson.

Gipson became just the second three-time first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American across all sports at Nebraska, while adding prestigious NCAA and Big Ten Postgraduate scholarships worth a total of $15,000. Gipson was also a seven-time All-American.

Junior outfielder Ryan Boldt earned his second CoSIDA Academic All-America award in 2016, after helping the Nebraska baseball team to the NCAA Tournament. Steven Jung 1989 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Runner-Up 2015 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) as meeting the standards established by the N4A.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/ or coach. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career.

Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs available for student-athletes.

The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska.

Construction was completed in the fall of 2010 on the Nebraska Student Life Complex, which nearly tripled the size of NU’s previous academic space. The Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex also features a new technology center and a dedicated Life Skills area and the Papik Computer lab (left).

NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS In May of 2016, 20 Husker student-athletes, a Nebraska letterwinner alum and and four staff members participated in a service trip abroad to the Dominican Republic.

The Huskers spent time with members of the community of Las Pajas to create a local sports court and create a mural at a community center.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to studentathletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance.

• Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities (pictured top left).

• Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics.

• Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every student-athlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school.

HUSKER FOR LIFE

Former Nebraska All-American Steven Jung was inducted as a member of the inaugural class of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in September of 2015. Jung, who was the NCAA Singles runner-up in 1989, was also a firstteam CoSIDA Academic All-American the same season.

He and his brother, Stuart, qualified together for the 1989 NCAA Doubles Championship as well.

LIFE SKILLS AWARDS

Ford Zitsch captured a prestigious Nebraska StudentAthlete HERO Leadership Award as a senior in 2016.

The award is presented to NU’s most committed student-athletes to community service across all sports.

A two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016, Zitsch was also a three-time a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD SERVICE TO A MUCH LARGER COMMUNITY

The Nebraska Life Skills program offered its second service trip abroad in 2016, taking 20 student-athletes to the Dominican Republic to help the community of Las Pajas. NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS

Regarded as the premier and most comprehensive Life Skills program in college athletics, the Husker program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support throughout college and beyond, promoting total person development and preparation for life after sports. Five full-time staff members coordinate a wide array of services benefiting Husker student-athletes.

PROACTIVE EDUCATION

The Life Skills team organizes several orientations aimed at acclimating student-athletes to college life. Additionally, all incoming student-athletes attend the fall semester Husker Life Seminar.

This interactive class promotes responsible decision-making, personal brand, financial literacy, leadership, involvement and service.

INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS

Every Nebraska student-athlete is assigned a Life Skills Coordinator who arranges individual meetings during the academic year to enhance personal and career development. The meetings help student-athletes identify a career focus and implement a plan to increase career marketability.

CAREER COMMITMENT

Annually, Nebraska Life Skills organizes a Student-Athlete Career, Networking Night and other career events aimed at connecting Huskers with companies desiring competitive, hardworking, accountable candidates. Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career opportunities across the country.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Nebraska student-athletes readily accept the role-model challenge, giving more than 2,500 hours annually to impact 25,000 across Nebraska.

Outreach events include hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies (including the Sportsmanship 4 Life Pep Rally, Make-A-Wish, NFL Play 60 and Husker Heroes.

LEADERSHIP

Nebraska Life Skills provides student-athletes with opportunities to enhance leadership skills while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Student-athletes can participate in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes or Husker Distinction Council.

UNL offers more than 600 recognized student organizations allowing athletes to collaborate with campus leaders for common goals. Nebraska Life Skills funds and coordinates an annual oneweek service abroad trip that allows 20 studentathletes to work toward a common goal while enriching cultural competencies.

RECOGNITION

In 2015-16, a record 347 Husker student-athletes were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for completing a minimum of six service projects in the calendar year. A host of other recognition opportunities at the institutional, Big Ten and NCAA levels that all reflect the high ideals, character and servant leadership nurtured through community involvement also are available.

POST-ELIGIBILITY OPPORTUNITIES

HUSKERS CLAIM NINTH HERMAN TEAM GPA AWARD IN 2016

The Husker men’s tennis teams has been one of the highest performing programs academically at Nebraska for decades. The men’s team under the direction of Coach Kerry McDermott has captured back-to-back Herman Team GPA awards for producing the highest cumulative grade-point average among all of Nebraska’s men’s teams. The men have won the award nine times since its inception in 1994.

Effective December 2015 and beyond, studentathletes who letter and graduate have a three-year window to benefit from one of three post-eligibility opportunities ($7,500 each). Upon completion of required seminars, graduates can either study abroad, complete an internship or begin graduate school within the University of Nebraska system.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The Life Skills program is responsible for all Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for Husker Athletics.

The first Diversity and Inclusion Summit occurred in January of 2016 and reached all student-athletes and staff with a message of acceptance and unity.

BIG TEN ACADEMIC ALLIANCE (BTAA)

As a member of the Big Ten, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, which is the academic consortium of the universities in the Big Ten Conference. The consortium was renamed on June 29, 2016.

The BTAA includes all 14 Big Ten Institutions and the University of Chicago. The Big Ten Academic Alliances and the institutions together have annual research expenditures topping $10.2 billion — more than the Ivy League and the University of California System combined — and they educate a total of nearly 600,000 students with approximately 50,000 full-time faculty members.

CHAMPIONS IN ATHLETICS, ACADEMICS, LIFE Nebraska men’s tennis is a program on the rise, and the Huskers broke through with their first-ever NCAA Championship appearance in 2010. The Huskers, under the direction of Head Coach Kerry McDermott (pictured right), made it back-to-back trips in 2011, and are planning to make an NCAA Championship trip a common theme. The winningest coach in Nebraska history, McDermott is closing in on his 400th career dual victory since taking the reins of the program in 1982.

In addition to achieving success on the court, members of the Nebraska men’s tennis program strive for success in the classroom and in the community. In 2016, the men’s tennis team claimed its ninth Herman Men’s Team GPA Award since the inception of the award in 1994.

Nebraska welcomed the dawn of a new era in Husker tennis with the opening of the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in 2016. The new on-campus facility features six indoor courts and 12 well-lit outdoor championship courts with Olympiccaliber surfaces.
