2012: ARE YOU CHARGED UP, CHARLESTON? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The U.S. economy may still be dragging a bit, but consumers are doing their part to rev up spending — notably buying and leasing tons of vehicles. Mirroring that movement is the Charleston area car-shopping public. While the financial outlook remains groggy, people in need of wheels from Eadytown to Edisto are perusing local dealerships for coupes, sedans, crossovers, pickups, hybrids and soon even an electric car or two. One positive sign locally is the arrival of new employers to pump dollars into the marketplace. That’s spurred individuals, couples and families to trade in their old jalopies on new or pre-owned cars and trucks. And those compacts, roadsters, crossovers, minivans and yes, some sport utility vehicles are winding up in garages, driveways and street corners from south of Broad to north of the Wando. But where do those sleek new models come from? At one time, most vehicles for domestic consumption were manufactured in the Midwestern United States, and the bulk in the greater Detroit area. That’s changed dramatically over the past 40 years or more. There’s still a Detroit Big Three. makes Ford and Lincoln; General Motors rolls out Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC; and Chrysler Corp. builds Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram trucks. The companies continue to run plants in Michigan and neighboring states. But they are also in California, Missouri, Canada, Mexico and China. Similarly the cars and trucks from overseasbased carmakers such as Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Subaru and Toyota may be from a state or two over or thousands of miles away. Daimler’s plant in Ladson assembles the globally popular Sprinter commercial and passenger vans, some of which go on to be sold alongside Mercedes in Charleston. The Lowcountry is home to an assortment of new car dealerships, many on the “auto miles” on Savannah Highway in Charleston and Rivers Avenue in North Charleston but also in suburbs such as Summerville and Mount Pleasant. Hundreds of employees work at local outlets, and dozens of businesses such as credit unions and insurance companies depend on the local auto industry. From a consumer standpoint, Charleston area car searchers are more tech savvy than in the past, navigating online sites from their computers or wireless devices. Yet they typically go on the Internet solely to conduct research and for comparison shopping; They continue to prefer kicking the tires on the car lot before signing on the dotted line. Dealerships have evolved over the years, too. In a number of cases, car stores have remodeled to add space or to freshen up their showrooms or service departments. Several new outlets have opened in the Charleston area. Sometimes dealership names are altered, the result of new ownership, consolidation or dealers dropping or adding a new brand. Among those makes that have faded away for good in the past decade are Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Mercury and Hummer. Still, no matter what takes place in 2012 or beyond, shoppers in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties can count on being able to visit a host of quality car and truck outlets within minutes of where they live. – Jim Parker
THIS GUIDE HAS A RULE BOOK The information in this guide is accurate to the best of our ability and knowledge at the time it was written. We say this because manufacturers are completely entitled to make changes after this writing and often do. Therefore, you can expect some things to have changed from the time of writing to the time you’ve read the info here. Most importantly, some manufacturers haven’t finalized their lineups and all the options, etc., as of this writing, which means that we might include carryover pricing, features, etc., in some cases, and indicate it as such. Vehicle name: Each vehicle synopsis is headed with the name, but not its suffixes. If relevant, they are mentioned in the body of the synopsis. The synopsis outlines the vehicle’s market position as well as major changes for the new model year. Base price: Prices reflect the entry-level model in a given lineup. That is to say the price provided is the starting point. In most cases, prices have been provided by the manufacturer and then rounded up or down to the nearest $100 to reflect small changes that inevitably occur from time to time. It’s also because the prices provided here are intended as a gauge of affordability and are not today’s sale price, so do not quote these prices to your dealer. Prices do not include the tax you’ll pay, although most include the delivery charges (and are indicated as such where possible) which run from about $700-$1,500. Where pricing is not yet available, we’ve taken our best guess and added “(est.)” to the number. Type: For most people, the picture and the number of doors will be the best indicator of the vehicle type, but many vehicles are sold in different body styles, which are outlined here. Base engine (hp): The base engine and its horsepower rating in brackets. Optional engines (hp): All the optional engines and their horsepower ratings in brackets. Layout: Indicates the location of the engine and the wheels it drives. All-wheel-drive is generically used to denote vehicles that have the ability to vary the power split between front and rear axles. Transmissions: All transmission options across the range. The term “automatic” will be used to generically describe all automatics, whether electronically shifted, overdrive, or otherwise. Mileage (city/highway): Usually EPA or manufacturer estimates for city and highway consumption, given in miles per gallon, with the engine and transmission from which the consumption was taken found in brackets (usually the base model). Safety: Tangible safety features that have a direct impact on survivability or prevention of a crash. We have elected to leave out tire-pressure monitoring as it is now mandated by law: Weight: Curb weights of the base models are indicated.

FORD FOCUS SEL
>>>>> Ford Focus
Over here is the new Focus. Over there is the old Focus. No . . . there is no resemblance. And parked alongside its Fiesta relation, the Focus looks positively aggressive with its wide-openmouth air intake and more planted stance. But for those who just can’t get with the sleeklooking hatchback, the sedan offers a more conservative silhouette. It’s also the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. The SE sedan and hatchback add Ford’s Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system plus some minor interior/exterior upgrades, while SEL versions improve on the basics with a six-speed automated manual transmission, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels. The top-rung Titanium’s full-load content includes touch-screen audio and climate controls, push-button start, 10-speaker Sony sound system and a sport-tuned suspension with 17-inch wheels. On the options list are leather-covered seats, power sunroof, navigation system, rear-view camera and active park assist that will actually take over the parallel-parking chores for you. For the fuel conscious, the optional SFE package - with its aero wheel covers, grille shutters, high-efficiency tires, four-wheel disc brakes and a rear spoiler - will reportedly achieve a 40-mpg highway rating. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pounds-feet of torque, which is 20 more horses and 10 more pounds-feet of torque than the 2011 2.0-liter Focus engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox that conserves fuel by delivering lightning-quick gear changes. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer). In the works is an electric Focus that features a 93-kilowatt (123-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Ford claims that recharging takes just three to four hours from a 240-volt home station available for about $1,500 from electronics retailer Best Buy.

2011 FORD F-150 XLT For 2011 the Ford F-150 gets an all-new, all-powerful engine lineup. For the better part of three decades, the Ford F-Series has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States, with the F150 being the most popular model within the line. Obviously, Ford has been doing a lot of things right with this truck, including giving it solid towing and hauling capabilities, respectable reliability, plenty of customization possibility and, with more recent generations, an easy-to-drive demeanor. –Edmunds.com

Ford swung for the fences with its full line of new engines, and it’s reaping the benefits: more than half of F-150s sold last year came equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-liter or the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost turbo. Those wanting traditional V-8 power were spoiled too, with 5.0-liter or 6.2-liter options readily available. Ford is keeping up the momentum for 2012 as all EcoBoost models will have gigantic 36-gallon fuel tanks standard, meaning a theoretical maximum range of more than 750 miles. Off-road enthusiasts will be happy to learn that more models will gain electronic locking rear axles, and a new four-wheel-drive system on Lariat trims and higher will now allow for a computer to send power to the front wheels if the rears are spinning. Otherwise, the sheer number of combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colors and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. Back for another year and built off the F-150 SuperCrew body is the toughlooking (and acting) Harley-Davidson model with its unique grille, lowered ride height, 22-inch painted wheels, special leather-clad interior festooned with H-D badging and your choice of black or silver paint jobs. A 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 is also standard on this truck, as it is on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4. Inspired by Ford’s participation in off-road desert racing, the Raptor is built to go where no other pickup dares to tread. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more than 11 inches of suspension travel in front and about 13.5 inches in back. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted on 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than seven inches compared with a standard F-150. For the 2012 model year, the Raptor now gets a locking front differential for better rock-crawling ability, and a forward-pointing off-road camera to help position the front tires. Also new for 2012 is the FX Appearance package that offers flat-black 20-inch wheels, black badges with red lettering, black-leather seats and interior trimmed in red and a red-stitched steering wheel.

>>>>> Chevrolet Sonic Overall: The Sonic is the tonic to cure those underachieving small-car blues.
At long last, Chevrolet appears to be taking the small-car segment seriously. The company’s newest entry replaces the Koreabuilt Aveo that has been around since the 2004 model year. Like the Aveo, the Sonic is offered in both sedan and mini-wagon formats. However, these cars are constructed at GM’s Orion, Mich., plant and not in Korea. Therefore, there’s plenty of North American style built into the Sonic, such as a stubbierlooking nose, more prominent grille and fancier headlight pods. In back, the sedan appears similar to the outgoing Aveo sedan, while the hatchback hides the rear door latches adjacent to the roof pillar. As well, the liftgate’s shape is one of the more stunning examples of this genre, with curved glass plus a set of really fancy taillamps that were apparently inspired by motorcycle headlights. Inside, the dashboard and control panel exude an up-level quality rarely seen in the econo-car class. Both Sonic body styles are larger than their outgoing Aveo counterparts by nearly 3.5 inches in overall length. In the sub-compact class, this increase is significant and helps provide a decent amount of passenger room. More is definitely better as far as performance is concerned. The Sonic roars to life with a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, or optional 138-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit. Although horsepower ratings are the same, the turbocharged engine makes 148 pounds-feet of torque compared with 125 pounds-feet for the base 1.8. A five-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic comes on the 1.8, while the turbo is exclusively matched to a six-speed manual. Chevy says the extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components were tuned by the Corvette engineering team, which should ensure that the Sonic delivers a sporty driving experience. Base models arrive as relatively stripped-down price leaders but include 10 standard airbags. That’s equal to the Cruze, but four airbags more than the rest of the sub-compact pack. Among a variety of options are leather-covered seats (heated in front), power sunroof, MyChevrolet hands-free phone, text and audio connectivity and larger (up to 17 inches from 15) wheels.

>>>>> Chevrolet Traverse Overall: Chevrolet’s big and tall wagon is famous for its utility and its relatively fuel-sipping ways; for the 2011 model year, it gets new colors and not much else.
With the related Saturn Outlook gone for good, Chevrolet now represents General Motors’ least-expensive version of this full-size tall wagon platform. Still, it has most of the function of the pricier GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave and is just as fuel-efficient . . . which is quite a bit more fuel-efficient than GM’s traditional body-on-frame V-8 models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The Traverse is almost the same size and can transport nearly as many passengers. The bold split grille seen on nearly all Chevy cars and trucks is bracketed by a pair of neatly integrated headlight pods plus a set of fog lamps that look as though they were lifted from the Malibu sedan. The interior displays a passenger car-like quality, with large, legible gauges and controls that are housed in an attractive dashboard that won’t require extensive study of the owner’s manual to decipher. Traverse’s passenger and cargo roominess trumps that of the Tahoe, whether all three rows of seats are folded flat or left upright. Traverse has a 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 281 horsepower, or 288 ponies with the optional dual exhaust. The engine operates through a six-speed automatic transmission, and the optional all-wheel-drive system seamlessly distributes power to either the front or rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. Stability control, a system that reduces the likelihood of a skid or spin, is standard equipment as is traction control. On the long list of available content, of which some will be standard on higher models, are 18 or 20-inch wheels (17-inch alloys are standard), perforated leather seats, heated and cooled front buckets, power liftgate, rear-view camera, power-folding outside mirrors, premium audio system and individual sunroofs for the first two rows.

LEXUS CT 200h
>>>>> Lexus CT 200h Although the HS 250h sedan only debuted in the fall of 2009, a cramped cabin and high price relative to its competition just hasn’t clicked with customers. So the new entry-level CT 200h hatchback was introduced for the 2011 model year. Based almost entirely off the four-door Toyota Prius, the Lexus version does more than just add nicer leather and a big circle-L badge on the grille. It’s a thorough reworking of the chassis, suspension and technology systems to make them worthy of the brand. The styling is about as far from the Prius as you can get. The headlights, grille and front bumpers follow the same cues as the HS and revised IS, while the rear looks like a shrunken RX. The wide-mouthed front, low ride height and 17-inch wheels are supposed to promise a more sporting drive, but the standard powertrain might not be up to the challenge. While the HS gets a 2.4-liter internal-combustion engine, the CT comes with the Prius’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder, boosted with a 27-kilowatt electric motor, which combines to deliver 134 horsepower. The CT is a front driver with a continually variable transmission. The zero-to-60-mph time of 9.8 seconds is rather leisurely, but, thankfully, fuel efficiency is a strong suit, helped by the CT’s ability to drive on electric power alone at 28 mph for up to one mile. Electric power is partly regenerated through braking. The CT’s two driving modes — Relaxing and Dynamic — allow customers to personalize their commutes even more. Relaxing covers the three “normal” settings (EV, Eco and Normal) while Dynamic loosens up the electronic nannies, tightens the steering and changes some of the interior gauges into sport-oriented mode. Drivers looking for even more feedback should choose the new-for-2012 F Sport package that includes a tighter suspension, unique 17-inch wheels, blacked-out grille, along with leather sport seats, aluminum pedals and metallic trim. The level of technology is very generous, including adaptive cruise control, a back-up camera and an available 40-gigabyte hard-drive-based navigation system and music box. Standard safety systems include seven airbags (including one for the driver’s knees), anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control to help prevent a skid or spin.

LEXUS RX
>>>>> Lexus RX
It’s hard to believe that sophisticated, safe, comfortable and efficient luxury sport utility vehicles really only picked up steam 15 years ago. It seems like every manufacturer has taken a shot, but no one has managed to beat the class-originator Lexus RX. It remains the company’s best-selling model, and the 2012 edition does not mess with the formula. If the exterior is a study in restraint, the cabin can be considered wildly fashionable. The dashboard flows dramatically across the control panel as if it was left in the sun too long. It’s visually arresting and totally unexpected in a Lexus. The body structure rests on a reworked platform highlighted by an independent rear suspension that, Lexus claims, makes the RX more comfortable and agile and provides an enlarged cargo area. Keeping the base RX 350 on pace is a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 275 horsepower, while the six-speed “MultiMode” automatic transmission helps generate improved fuel economy. The gasoline-electric RX 450h functions with its own 245-horsepower version of the 3.5 V-6, but combines with up to three motor generators to produce 295 horsepower. So, the hybrid equates to more power than the gas-only RX 350 and a 32-mpg city rating, which is about 28 percent better than the RX 350. All-wheel-drive is also on the menu for the RX 350; its electronically controlled system sends 100 percent of the power to the front wheels under optimal road conditions, but directs up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels when needed. Wall-to-wall convenience items include keyless access with push-button start. Available up-level content ranges from leather seats, moonroof and voice-activated navigation to a premium sound system and a heads-up windshield display for speedometer and other key functions.

Initially there will be just two M-Class editions: the ML350 BlueTEC 4MATIC comes with a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel that resembles the previous powerplant in displacement only. Its cylinder walls have been coated with a friction-fighter that eliminates the need for cast-iron liners. Mercedes-Benz claims that this and other improvements combine for a three-percent fuel economy gain. The turbo-diesel now generates 240 horsepower and 455 pounds-feet of torque, compared with the outgoing 3.0’s 210 horses and 400 pounds-feet. Also available is a 3.5-liter V-6 in the ML350 4MATIC that’s rated at 302 horsepower, a 34-horsepower up-tick from the previous 268 rating. A new seven-speed automatic transmission with a more efficient torque converter joins both engines. The M-Class also has a system that deactivates the belt-driven oil and water pumps as well as the air-conditioning compressor when they’re not required. As well, the electrically operated power steering unit functions independently of the drive belt. The M-Class’s road manners have been sharpened with Agility Control, active damping that varies the ride and stability characteristics according to road conditions. The standard 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system can be had with an optional On & Offroad package with six selectable transmission modes. Automatic (the default setting) is for normal driving conditions, while two off-road settings cover both light and tougher conditions. Winter, Sport and Trailer settings each have their own separate transmission shift points as well as adjustments for the self-leveling air suspension that’s part of the package, along with a skid plate and twospeed transfer case with a locking low range. Also available is M-B’s Active Curve System that works with the air suspension to significantly reduce body lean on twisty roads.
In the face of the slick Audi A5 and the BMW 3-series coupe, and even the Infiniti G37, Mercedes-Benz launches a sultry new two-door coupe with four-, six- and eight-cylinder power. This is a far cry from the small C-Class coupe of old: the new car is larger (and runs on the same platform as the sedan), more stylish and much more elegant. The base engine is a new turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated at 201 horsepower (called the C250). The C-Class sedan also adds this engine to the inventory, no doubt to help prop up the company’s fleet-economy numbers. The coupe can also be had with 302-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 (up from 268) as well as the 451-horsepower 6.3-liter V-8. All engines use seven-speed automatic transmissions. Where the sedan deviates is with its exclusive 3.0-liter V-6 option, with 228 horsepower and all-wheel-drive. It’s the only all-wheel-drive model in the entire range. For 2012, the sedan continues with two looks: the three-pointed cross on top of the grille (Luxury); and a bigger three-pointed cross right in the middle of the grille (Sport). The base C300 Luxury sedan includes dual-zone climate control, eight-way power front seats, eight-speaker 100watt audio system and a power sunroof. The Sport has a different attitude and comes with a tighter suspension, trunk-lid spoiler, 17-inch wheels and body cladding from AMG, which is Mercedes-Benz’s in-house “tuner” division. All coupes get the AMG look, too. Also added is light-emitting-diode (LED) daytime running lights with black headlight inlays. The C350 adds rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, garage-door opener and satellite radio. Leather seats, panorama sunroof, premium audio package and 18-inch wheels for Sport sedans are optional. A Dynamic Handling package for rear-wheel-drive Sport models is highlighted by 18-inch wheels and a suspension-damping system that instantly varies the degree of firmness at each wheel, depending on road conditions. For AMG coupe/ sedan buyers, the AMG Development Package beefs up the engine’s internals, tweaks the computer and adds 30 horsepower, for a total of 481, along with raising the speed limiter to 174 mph from 155. The package also tunes the suspension for track work, adds a limited-slip rear differential, red brake calipers and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler. Our advice? fit your coupe with this.

Louis Chevrolet at the 1916 Indianapolis 500. Although mechanically gifted, he wasn’t much of a businessman. He eventually ended up as an underused employee at the company that held his name.
The Chevrolet story began a century ago with Louis Chevrolet, who, aside from being a talented engineer and car builder, was also an accomplished racing driver. Racing is still a big part of the Chevrolet company today, although most people have long since forgotten Louis’ accomplishments. As an homage to that history, Chevrolet offers all 2012 Corvette models, including Grand Sport, Z06 (pictured) and ZR1, in Centennial Edition trim that provides a unique racing-inspired styling package. Tasteful Louis Chevrolet graphics are found on the rear pillar, wheel centers and the steering wheel.
Centennial Edition Corvettes come with magnetic ride control. Shocks are filled with what amounts to liquid metal, the dampening of which is controlled by electric current.
The first Chevrolet was the C Series Classic Six of 1912. It was pricey — more than $2,000 — and had a 40-horsepower six-cylinder engine.
“Carbon Flash Metallic” paint. The wheels are satin black and specific to each Corvette model. These are the Z06 wheels.
Black with red trim is the theme with this special edition Corvette. The brake calipers, seat stitching and wheel lips are red.
You’ll find the “100” located on the hood flags and embossed into the headrests of the seats.

ALL-AMERICAN
Chevrolet briefly looks back at century of history while eager to rocket into the next 100 years The oddity is not hard to miss. A model that’s come to exemplify America’s hard-working, nose-to-the-grindstone attitude is named for a Swiss-born racer with modest business credentials, one Louis Chevrolet. Yet that’s actually fitting for a country that glorifies its role as the world’s melting pot. Chevrolet, the brand, has lasted 100 years as dozens of other brands faded away for some of the same reasons the U.S. draws strength, from its diversity. By Jim Parker Not always — although sometimes — the flashiest or trendiest car on the road, Chevrolet has stayed the course through technological innovation, smart design and most importantly, an innate sense of knowing what Americans want at any given time or place. Upwardly mobile professionals don’t necessarily own a Chevrolet when they reach their American dream, but chances are they drove one at some point in their lives — a Bel Air, Biscayne, Camaro, Caprice, Chevelle, Chevette, Corvair, Impala, Malibu, C-10, Silverado, Tahoe, maybe even a Corvette. Two figures stand out in Todd Newsome’s mind. Newsome, zone manager for Chevrolet based in Charlotte who oversees parts of Georgia and the Carolinas including the Charleston area, cited the best ninemonth sales period Chevrolet ever had in 100 years. It was not in its 1950s heyday, or the SUV boom or 2008, the peak year for car sales nationwide. It’s 2011, he said. Chevy has already sold more than 2 million cars. To put the company’s global influence another way, Newsome said Pandora released a list of the top 100 songs about Chevrolet, indicating that the online audio company had to narrow the list from many hundreds of tunes. “Our focus is to remind people of where we are — 200 million Chevrolets have been sold all-time — and where we are going,” Newsome said.

that,” he said. “From a legacy standpoint, they are a driving force of the American teenager,” said Crews, whose first car in high school was a 1973 Malibu Classic. The brand hasn’t rested on its laurels, however. “I think as the country turns the corner on its most difficult time we can remember, I feel it’s the best lineup Chevrolet (has had). We’ve got the most stylish, fuel efficient, safety (conscious) cars.” Chevrolet offers some model for almost everyone. Need a crossover for a growing family? There’s Equinox and Traverse. The boat-towing full size sport utility category is filled by Suburban and Tahoe. Chevy builds full-size Silverado trucks and has disclosed that it will keep producing a mid-size Colorado pickup. In the car category, there’s the classy Malibu, revived Impala, top-selling Cruze and the new compact Sonic. Want something sporty or muscular? Consider Corvette or Camaro. And electric? There’s the Volt. Another standout feature is that at least a dozen models get more than 30 miles to the gallon and the Cruze and Volt top 40 mpg. The brand can keep pace with the Charleston area’s economy. “I think in Charleston, Chevrolet can make a large impact on growth, with Boeing (and other employers).” He sees a bright future for the “175 families here at Crews Chevrolet.”
Iconic nameplate
“In Charleston, Chevy dealers have had a legacy of providing affordable cars for families and businesses,” said Robert Marchant, dealer-operator of Marchant Chevrolet in Ravenel. “Besides providing the products and service to help Charleston grow, local Chevy dealers have a legacy of community involvement. Over the years local dealers have partnered with local sports teams, Youth baseball, local schools, community events and many local charities and churches to impact lives in Charleston,” he said. Looking forward, “It is an exciting time to be a Chevrolet dealer,” he says. “Chevrolet is now receiving products that in the past may have first gone to Saturn or Pontiac. Chevrolet still plans on advertising the new products, but they have also given the local dealers tools to assist customers and to be even more involved in the community. Families that have never considered a Chevrolet are now buying them.” Marchant said. Rick Pulcino, general sales manager at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet, said the brand is known for its legendary models. “We built our legacy on iconic vehicles, the Corvette, Camaro, Suburban, ChevCharleston and Chevy Incorprated on Nov. 2, 1911, elle SS, and our race history,” he said. “Now today, we have made fuel efforts on Chevrolet made its way to the vehicles over 30 mpg.” The Suburban, which dates to the 1930s, helped launch the surge of familes Charleston area at least as packing up and going camping or to DisneyWorld. The much-seen Tahoe, unveiled early as 1926. in 1985, has spurred “a lot of copy cats,” Pulcino said. FORD EXPLORER LIMITED
FORD FUSION SEL
>>>>> Ford Fusion
>>>>> Ford Explorer
While the Fusion will probably be replaced with an all-new “world car” that will be sold from Boston to Berlin, the current 2012 model still features a bold, aggressive attitude with well-judged suspension, braking and steering systems. Much of the interior features a soft-touch “skin” that looks and feels upscale; the seats have plenty of side support and the coverings are also richer in appearance. The gauges are well lit using an easy-to-read three-dimensional effect and ambient lighting brightens up the footwells and floor-console. The base 175 horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder remains in most models, while the optional 3.0-liter V-6 returns with 240 hp. The Sport model features a class-competitive 263 hp 3.5-liter V-6 that makes it feel like a scaled-down Taurus SHO. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard on both V-6s. Six-cylinder Fusions can also be had with all-wheel-drive, a feature not currently offered on any of the company’s direct competitors. The Hybrid combines a 156 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a 106 hp electric motor for a net output of 191 horses. The Hybrid combo is mated to a continuously variable transmission and can travel up to 47 mph on battery power alone. Ford claims the Fusion Hybrid can travel up to 700 miles on a single 17-gallon fill-up, or the equivalent of 41 mpg city/36 mpg highway. A capless fuel-filler system automatically opens and closes when you insert and then remove the pump nozzle. The optional blind-spot warning system puts lights in the side mirrors to warn of approaching traffic, while SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated communications system, operates cell phones, audio programming, vehicle diagnostics and emergencycall placement.
Keeping the popular Explorer tag could have blown up in Ford’s face. Plenty of customers disliked its rough manners. That changed for the 2011 model year when the Explorer adopted unitized (frameless) architecture that’s common to most passenger cars. It’s still rugged enough to tackle all but the roughest terrain and trailer up to 5,000 pounds in the process. Additionally, the “Ex” is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the truck-ish 2010 edition. And in case you actually do decide to go where others fear to tread, the Explorer’s ample ground clearance and available 20-inch rubber should help you arrive unscathed. The interior (also car-like) provides room for up to seven passengers, or six when the second-row bench is replaced by optional lounge chairs. Both the second and third rows fold flat for maximum storage, but fall short of the space offered in the previous Explorer as well as that of many current competitors. While the base 290 horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 is adequate and efficient, the optional turbocharged 240 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine — front-drive models only — achieves 28 mpg on the highway. Base Explorers arrive with most of the expected trappings for this class of vehicle, including hill-start assist that keeps you from rolling backward while stopped on an incline. The mid-range XLT adds a coded keyless entry pad, back-up warning system, automatic headlamps and heated outside mirrors, while the Limited includes dual-zone climate control, 10-way power driver’s seat, power-adjustable pedals, rear-view camera, pushbutton start and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited’s options list bristles with goodies such as a navigation system, heated-and-cooled leather seats, blind-spot warning system and power liftgate, to name a few. For off-roading, V-6 models can be ordered with Ford’s “terrain management” four-wheel-drive system that can be adjusted by the driver to Normal, Mud, Sand or Snow settings. The system then adjusts the front-to-rear torque bias accordingly as well as side to side.

>>>>> Subaru Outback
Splitting off the Legacy wagons into the Outback line has a lot of benefits, including less confusion and all-wheel-drive, all the time.
On the outside, the Outback seems to have more in common with its larger Tribeca-sport-ute sibling than the Legacy sedan upon which it is based. The connection was more obvious when there was such a thing as a Legacy wagon, but since all wagons moved to the Outback camp, there’s much more clarity in the purpose and, dare we say, less confusion in the ordering process than before. Of course all Outbacks, which have an elegant rough-and-tumble look to them, are all-wheel-drive and possess a quasi-off-road-y hiked-up stance. Base models come with the usual 170-horsepower 2.5-liter horizontally opposed fourcylinder engine. Here, two banks of pistons are positioned at 180 degrees from each other rather than the standard inline and upright design. The result is a shorter engine with a mass that’s positioned closer to the road, lowering the Outback’s — and all other Subarus really — center of gravity. Transmission choices consist of a six-speed manual or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with column-mounted paddle controls that realistically mimic the gear changes in a regular automatic. Available is a 3.6-liter sixcylinder powerplant — also a “boxer” design — that was originally created for the Tribeca. With this choice there’s 256 horsepower and 247 poundsfeet of torque on tap. In this instance, the only transmission available is a five-speed automatic. For off-road adventuring, ground clearance is a decent 8.7 inches, which beats out many “traditional” sport utility vehicles that pride themselves on ruggedness. All Outbacks are well equipped and come with a unique roof-rail system where the crossbars fold parallel to the rails when not in use, reducing wind noise and likely increasing fuel economy. There’s also an electronic parking brake that holds the vehicle in place on an incline until the accelerator pedal is pushed. Limited editions add dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery plus the availability of a voice-activated navigation system and rear-view camera.

>>>>> Subaru Impreza Overall: Subaru’s least-expensive model is treated to a major makeover and emerges as a genuine fuel-sipping compact. While Subaru’s Legacy Sedan, Outback and Forester wagon have been flying off the sales floor, the Impreza’s popularity was at best lukewarm. That changes for the 2012 model year. Imprezas now feature the kind of bolder, broad-shouldered flaredfender styling similar to the WRX and STI models that were redesigned for 2011. As well, the front and rear clip and sedan roofline is reminiscent of the larger Legacy. Meanwhile, the wagon’s nose has much in common with the Outback, but the rest of the sheetmetal is in sync with the WRX. Other changes include a more steeply raked windshield and a front roof pillar that has been moved forward by nearly eight inches, allowing for a much wider front door opening. The distance between the front wheels has also been slightly extended, while overall length and width remains unchanged. Inside, the redesigned instrument panel is now flatter for improved forward visibility. Both it, the door panels and floor console have been coated in richer-looking soft-touch materials and the wagon’s rear seat now folds to create a completely flat load floor. The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder generates 148 horsepower while the previous model’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder made 170. Despite the output decrease, Subaru claims that the 2.0 will still provide lively performance due to reduced vehicle weight. But the engine’s biggest advantage is the anticipated 30-percent improvement in overall fuel economy, rated at 27 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. The best the 2011 Impreza could muster was 20/27. These gains are also partly derived from a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that’s optional (a five-speed manual gearbox is standard). In up-level Imprezas, the CVT comes with a six-speedmanual mode that employs steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters to operate six preset ratios. There are no fewer than five distinct trim levels with the base version receiving air conditioning, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry plus the usual power-operated controls. From there the sky’s the limit, topping out with the Limited and Sport Limited wagon models that arrive with leather seats, unique 17-inch alloy wheels and premium audio packages, to name just a few highlights.

Subaru of America understands, as should all manufacturers, that it has a great responsibility to the environment. But clean vehicles are just one part of it. The Subaru Zero Landfill Plant
Partial-Zero Emission Vehicles
In 2004, our Subaru of Indiana manufacturing plant became the first automotive assembly facility to be "zero landfill," meaning all waste is recycled or turned into electricity. In other words, a single-family home produces more waste in a day than our SIA plant does in a year.
Subaru has offered certified Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) since 2003, including Legacy, Outback and Forester models for sale anywhere in the United States. Subaru Partial Zero Emission Vehicles meet California's SuperUltra-Low-Emission vehicle exhaust emission standard. Gasoline vehicles meeting these standards can have even lower emissions than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
National Wildlife Habitat In 2003, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly facility to be designated as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Over 800 acres serve as a home for birds and animals, including white-tail deer, red-tail hawks, blue heron, Canadian geese, mallard ducks, beavers, coyote, snapping turtles and the bald eagle.

>>>>> Mitsubishi Outlander
Overall: If you don’t need the Outlander’s larger storage area or its available three rows of seats, then scope out the shorter five-passenger Sport variant. Think of the Outlander Sport as being similar to the Outlander wagon in style, but shorter by more than 14 inches. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and clean cut. It also works well with the Lancer Evolution-style open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 poundsfeet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted to the base ES front-wheel-drive models, while a continuously variable (CVT) unit is optional with the ES, but standard in both the two- and all-wheel-drive SE versions. Paddle shifters that control the six artificial steps (designed to emulate the more familiar operation of a conventional automatic transmission) are part of the CVT package. The Sport’s optional all-wheel-drive is controlled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when tire slip is detected, up to 70 percent of the engine’s torque can be directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” position that maintains a 60:40 torque split when the situation calls for maximum traction from all four wheels. The base Outlander Sport ES includes a goodly assortment of standard features that will please most bargain hunters. Opting for the $22,500 SE adds climate control, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, upgraded seats and 18-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steel rims are standard). Among the suite of options are a mega-sized sunroof, mega-watt sound system and a navigation/rearview camera combo. Minor changes for 2012 consist of reduced engine noise on all CVT-equipped Sports plus improvements to the CVT for better throttle response. The Sport might not entirely live up to its name, but for style and substance, this shrink-wrapped wagon provides an interesting alternative to the Kia Sportage, Jeep Patriot and Honda CR-V.

The i hatchback joins the all-electric Nissan Leaf plus the gasoline-supported Chevrolet Volt as pioneers in the clean energy movement. However the i (simplified from the original iMiEV name), will be one of the smallest electrical offerings to be mass produced for general consumption. As a short-haul urban commuter pod, it easily accommodates four adults as long as they’re packing light. But with only the front seats in use, cargo capacity with the 50:50 rear seat folded flat matches the space available in the larger Nissan Leaf. The i’s top speed is set at 80 mph, but driving at that velocity for any length of time will quickly sap its 330-volt lithium-ion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. The system flows power to the 80-kilowatt (107-horsepower) electric motor. The i’s range at about 85 miles per charge, less than the 100 miles claimed by the Leaf and other electrics. Piloting the i involves shifting the single-speed controller to one of three operating modes: “D” for optimum performance; “Eco” for maximum battery life; or “B” to maximize the amount of regenerative breaking that replenishes the batteries more quickly and stretches the i’s effective range. A 240-volt home charging system requires about six hours to top up the i, or 22.5-hours if you tap into a 120-volt outlet found in virtually every home. However many states, especially California, are busily creating a network of public charging stations that will replenish the i to 80 percent of full capacity in just 30 minutes. Sales will begin with the western United States plus Hawaii in late 2011, with nationwide availability by the end of 2012. The $29,100 (excluding a $7,500 federal tax credit and other state credits) base ES includes air conditioning, power windows, locks and mirrors, heated driver’s seat, four-speaker 100-watt audio system and all the requisite safety content. At $31,100 (also excluding the federal tax credit), the SE bumps up the content with fancier alloy wheels, an eight-speaker 360-watt sound package, fog lamps, two-tone instrument panel and upgraded seat covers. A Cold Zone package, consisting of a battery warming system and heated side mirrors, can be added to both models, while SE buyers can opt for a navigation system, review camera and the quick-charge DC port as part of the Premium package.

>>>>> Mitsubishi Lancer Overall: The backbone of the Mitsubishi line adds an all-wheeldrive model and adjusts some of the Lancer’s trim nomenclature; Lancer GT adopts the Ralliart’s open-mouth front fascia; Sportback hatch, Ralliart and red-hot Evolution carry on pretty much unchanged. The Lancer is the volume leader of the Mitsubishi fleet and as such offers a wide variety of models designed to satisfy nearly every taste and performance inclination, from plainJane grocery hauler to all-out all-wheel-drive sports sedan that’s the basis for the company’s rally-racing activities. For the 2012 model year the Lancer offers a new SE trim level with the sole aim of giving those living in snowy climes a fighting chance when running up against Old Man Winter. The SE, which slots in between the ES and the GT (formerly GTS) trims, arrives with a 168 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that it shares with the GT. That’s a step up from the 148 hp 2.0-liter I4 that moves ES as well as the price-leader DE. But what makes the SE significant is that it comes with standard all-wheel-drive along with your choice of a five-speed manual, or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). Other SE features consist of heated front seats and outside mirrors and added interior/exterior trim pieces. Otherwise, the rest of the Lancer line stands pat: the Subaru WRX-fighting Ralliart and the Evolution that dukes it out with the WRX STI derivative feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. However, there’s “only” 237 hp to play with in the Ralliart, while the Evo spools out 291 barely bridled ponies. As well, the Ralliart makes do with a less sophisticated suspension setup and lacks the Evo’s slightly wider front fenders and rally-inspired front bucket seats. The turbocharger is a bit smaller, hence the Ralliart’s lower power rating, and the standard six-speed twin-clutch automated manual gearbox is not as sophisticated as the Evo’s optional version. The standard Evolution transmission is a five-speed manual. All Lancers come with seven airbags, including frontimpact, side-impact, side-curtain and driver’s knee inflatable.

>>>>> Dodge Ram HD Overall: Dodge’s big-truck-for-big-jobs HD finally fires back in the big-diesel torque war with Ford and GM
CHRYSLER JEEP
There’s something about heavy-duty trucks that just screams “out of my way!” Perhaps it’s the height or the sheer size. Or perhaps it’s just the feeling of being near something with so much power under the hood. The Ram HD 2500 and 3500, borrows most of the lighter-duty Ram 1500’s sheetmetal, but attaches it to a much more rigid chassis. The result is a truck that can haul and tow an inordinate amount of whatever you have. The starting point is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V-8. That’s a bit shy of the same engine in the light-duty-Ram line. However, many HD buyers who work these rigs hard might want to consider the 6.7-liter Cummins straight-six turbo-diesel option that’s rated at 350 hp and, more importantly, for 2012, a full 800 pounds-feet of torque at just 1,500 rpm, which is barely above idle. That’s now in the same league as Ford and General Motors. The practicalities of this engine extend to its ability to be driven for 350,000 miles between major overhauls, a feature that’s particularly important for HD buyers who use their trucks as a means to earning their livelihood. The clean-burning (legal in all 50 states) powerplant has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help augment the brakes to help decelerate the vehicle. The Hemi is connected to a new six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with a six-speed manual, or optional six-speed automatic. The new-last-year off-road-oriented Outdoorsman includes protective skid plates, heated power-folding outside mirrors, all-weather mud-and-slush floor mats and off-road-rated tires. For added toughness, check out the four-wheel-drive Power Wagon that comes with much of the Outdoorsman’s content and adds electric-locking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bar, special hill-climbing axle ratio and a 12,000-pound-capacity winch.
DODGE RAM 3500 HD
>>>>> DETAILS >>>>>>>>>>> Powertrain: Base 5.7-liter “Hemi” V-8 makes 383 horsepower; popular-choice 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel now produces 800 pounds-feet of torque; specializes in hauling and towing the really big loads while barely breaking a sweat. Base price (incl. destination): $29,200 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine (hp): 5.7-liter OHV V-8 (383) Optional engine (hp): 6.7-liter OHV I6, turbo-diesel (350) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. with turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (std. with 5.7); six-speed automatic (opt. with turbodiesel) / MPG (city/hwy): n/a Safety: Front airbags, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes Weight (lb.): 5,300
>>>>> Chrysler 200 Overall: Shocking redesign and re-naming to 200 in 2011 leaves little room for changes from Chrysler in 2012.
It’s amazing what a little elbow grease and midnight oil can do: Chrysler engineers and designers turned the unloved Sebring sedan into the new-ish 200 virtually overnight. The smoother front and rear styling and LED lamps are flattering, but the sides and roofline are pretty much unaltered from the Sebring. New Chrysler owner Fiat obviously feels as though there is enough worth in the Sebring platform to use it as a jumping off point for the 200, that is until a Fiat-based model arrives as a replacement. Underneath, the suspension offers improved ride quality and also cuts down on noise (acoustic laminated front and side glass is part of the package). Inside, there’s an attractive instrument panel and supportive seats. There’s also plenty of what Chrysler calls “soft-touch” features, such as the armrests. Overall, it’s a good tuneup over the Sebring. There’s no question that the 200 looks better, though, and the optional engine makes it a much more lively ride for the whole family. While the base powerplant is a 173 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder, buyers can select the new 283 hp “Pentastar” 3.6-liter V-6. The four-cylinder is coupled to the price-leader model’s four-speed automatic transmission, or you can specify a six-speed automatic. The latter is your only choice when it comes to the 3.6. The 200 has to cover a broad spectrum of buyers and is therefore available in LX, Touring, Limited and 200 S trim levels, so there should be something for just about everyone.
CHRYSLER 200 LIMITED

>>>>> Jeep Grand Cherokee
Overall: A truly civilized Jeep that’s still comfortable breaking rocks; bad-boy SRT8 supertruck returns with mind-bending acceleration.
When launched, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was a significant improvement over the outgoing model in nearly every category. Overall length was extended by nearly two inches, while three inches have been added to the width. Most significantly, the distance between the front and rear wheels grows by 5.3 inches, creating much needed rearseat knee and leg space. Along with a stiffer platform, many of the various suspension components are shared with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class sport ute (Chrysler used to be part of the Mercedes-Benz juggernaut). Jeep uses the corporate 290 horsepower 3.6-liter unit while the 5.7-liter Hemi” V-8 remains optional with 360 hp and 390 pounds-feet of torque. Both powerplants come with five-speed automatic transmissions. New for 2012 is the return of Jeep’s high-powered SRT8 monster. With an uprated 470 hp 6.4-liter Hemi, 20-inch wheels with sticker road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials, the ultimate Grand Cherokee promises to be just as fun through corners as it is at the drag strip. Jeep says the 4,500-pound beast will hit 60 mph in less than five seconds. All three “normal” GC models — Laredo, Limited and Overland — are available in either rear- or four-wheel-drive. For Overland, you’ll have your choice of Quadra-Trac I with its single-speed transfer case (which is also standard on the SRT8), or the more off-road-capable Quadra Trac II and Quadra Drive II systems. Each features a two-speed transfer case with high and low gearset. Quadra Drive II includes an electronic limited-slip differential that will react to low-traction conditions quick enough to entirely prevent wheel spin. The Quadra Trac II or Quadra Drive II includes Jeep’s new Selec-Terrain control with four separate traction settings: Sand/Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement. Available is Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air-ride suspension that can be manually adjusted over a 4.5-inch range to provide a maximum 11.1 inches of ground clearance. The base Laredo’s equipment includes the usual comfort and power-operated niceties, while the top two trims include 18-inch wheels (17s are standard), remote starter and bright bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights that automatically adjust their intensity according to ambient light and oncoming traffic. The option list includes a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, 20-inch wheels, premium audio system and a power rear liftgate, to name just a few of the biggies.

JEEP CHRYSLER DODGE
>>>>> Dodge Durango Overall: Seven-seat Dodge Durango is what the old Jeep Commander should have been; spacious, efficient and great off the beaten path.
One of the few nearly-new vehicles in Dodge’s stable, the Durango sport utility vehicle returned to life for the 2011 model year. The big “D” has been designed off the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s unitized (frameless) platform. Also highly regarded is the 290 horsepower V-6 (Chrysler’s newest powerplant effort) as well as the optional 360 hp 5.7-liter “Hemi” V-8. The latter features a variable displacement system that attempts to reduce fuel consumption by shutting down half of the engine’s eight cylinders under light-load conditions. Although the V-6 carries on with Dodge’s older five-speed automatic transmission, the V-8 gets a brand-new six-speed automatic that can be manually shifted. The Hemi-equipped Durango can tow heavy loads up to 7,400 pounds (6,200 pounds for the V-6) and can also carry up to seven passengers when using all three rows of seats, although second-row twin high-back bucket seats will make an appearance later in the 2012 model year. And since the same designers who penned the GC’s interior also created the Durango’s interior, comfort and roominess are also first rate. Along with fourwheel-drive, Durango options include a system that signals you when another vehicle is about to overtake you or is traveling in your blind spot(s). Another system alerts you when another vehicle is approaching from behind as you’re backing out of a parking stall. Dodge also brags that the Durango’s generous fuel tank will allow you to travel up to 500 miles without filling up.

>>>>> Chrysler Town & Country
Overall: After a healthy freshening for the 2011 model year, Chrysler is offering few major changes to Town & Country for 2012.
Positioned as the luxury choice for Chrysler-minivan buyers, the Town & Country trumps its Dodge Grand Caravan sibling in feature count and comfort. Both versions were given a bolder look on a one-sizefits-all platform for the 2008 model year, including a squared-off snout, boxier body and a more upright liftgate. For 2011, the designers set their sights on upgrading the vehicle’s key interior and mechanical components. For passengers, the available Stow ‘n Go second-row bench seat has been redesigned with improved comfort in mind and now more easily folds away. The standard third-row bench seat can be power folded (optional) to create a flat load floor. For 2012, those situated in the rear will have a standard DVD entertainment unit that can simultaneously play from different video and audio inputs. Optional is a subscription-based BackseatTV from Sirius that pipes in three channels of children’s programming. A similar system from FLO TV has 20 additional channels of diverse content, from news to entertainment shows culled from various network and specialty sources. All Town & Country models get leather-covered seats for 2012, too. Along with traveling in style, T&C shoppers will appreciate the scoot in the minivan’s step with the 283 horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 and standard six-speed automatic transmission.

>>>>> Jeep Wrangler Overall: Wrangler and four-door Unlimited are more civilized to drive than ever, including body-colored fenders and hardtops. And the Wrangler finally gets what it has needed for years. Perhaps for the first time in its life, the iconic Wrangler will come with an engine that isn’t more than a decade old. Dropping the old 3.8-liter V-6 in favor of Chrysler’s excellent 3.6-liter unit means an increase to 285 horsepower (up from 202), providing the kind of accelerative kick that used to come only from home-built V-8 conversions. The new V-6 should be more flexible and efficient too, the latter helped by the new optional five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy improves to 17/21 mpg for the two-door or 16/20 mpg for the larger four-door Unlimited. These changes complement the attention the Wrangler’s interior received for the 2011 model year with heated front seats, climate control, heated power outside mirrors, added noise-reducing insulation and a steering wheel that contains audio, cruise control and hands-free-phone switchgear. There’s also more softie appeal with the Wrangler’s redesigned instrument panel, lockable console bin and upgraded materials used on the door panels and center-console armrest. The offroad oriented Rubicon now has a body colored hardtop, instead of black, like on Sahara models. Base X, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels continue, with the first two featuring part-time four-wheel-drive with optional limited slip rear differential. The tough-customer Rubicon uses the Off-Road Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front/rear locking differentials for greater agility and 32-inch off-road rubber. Looking for more space? The extended-length Wrangler Unlimited features four doors and more cargo area. It’s also the only model that can be ordered as a rear driver. Regardless of size, all Wranglers are equipped with Hill Start Assist, which prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when releasing the brake pedal on an incline. Also standard is trailer sway control and traction and stability control (to help prevent a skid or spin) that can be turned off or left partially functioning, depending on terrain.
