Initial Framework Exploration

The collaborative and multi-disciplinary design process for PlayWorks at Waterfront Park was influenced by the park’s own mantra of making play out of work. Our process was informed by four guiding principles grounded by a deep understanding of the site’s context, history, and potential.

The park’s program was broken down into three major types of activities influenced by our understanding of psychomotor skills, cognitive behavior, and social interaction. The design team explored three concepts for how users could experience and move through these programmatic spaces. These concepts, shown below, each provide a unique insight into how people of all ages choose to move through spaces given certain parameters. Though elements from each of the three concepts below influenced the final design, the parkour concept was developed as it provided the most dynamic environment for the park’s potential users. A Consensus-Driven Process

Public Engagement Through an extensive public engagement process with special focus on the West Louisville neighborhoods of Portland & Russell, the planning team asked for input on potential park features, program components, and overall vision. Feedback was collected through dotmocracy exercises, interactive and hands-on charrettes with adults and children of all ages, and attendance at community meetings of various sizes. The planning team distilled the ideas discussed at these events to develop the overarching concept and exhibits for PlayWorks at Waterfront Park.

Waterfront Park Phase IV

Observation Pier

PlayWorks at Waterfront Park is located on the southeastern edge of the future Waterfront Park Phase IV, accessible from an existing vehicular drive at Rowan Street and 10th Street. Pedestrians can access the park from the existing Louisville RiverWalk — a short five to seven minute walk from Kentucky Science Center and other popular downtown destinations. Largely under Interstate 64, the park includes surface parking with over 55 spaces, restrooms, and a leasable event building.

Site Plan & Play Components

The park is organized into three zones: The River, The Big Dig, and The Overlook. Each zone includes a distinctive play experience that pays homage to the Ohio River's rich cultural and industrial heritage. The park provides unique opportunities for children and adults of all ages to make play out of work.

CHAIN HOIST

JIB CRANE

• Visitors pull on a loop chain connected to a large industrial winch to raise and lower a heavy length of anchor chain using mechanical advantage

• Visitor operate a real jib crane using hand-cranks to lift small tires and place and stack them on targets painted on the ground • Visitors can work solo or with others creating their own games and challenges.

• Gives visitors the opportunity to use an authentic piece of machinery used on a working waterfront

• ADA accessible

• Chain is in a stainless steel mesh enclosure shaped like the bow of a ship • ADA accessible

WOBBLY LOGS AND PLATFORM

LOG JAM AND PILING WALK

• Visitors walk on logs mounted on car springs and connected end to end with universal joints. As one or more visitors walk along the logs the logs move up and down.

• Visitors choose different routes through a series of criscrossing wood poles and low round concrete pilings • Several larger diameter pilings at ADA transfer height offer an accessible experience

• Visitors can transfer from a wheelchair onto this low platform that is mounted on a car spring.

• PILING WALK is ADA accessible • WOBBLY PLATFORM is ADA accessible and a complimentary activity to the Wobbly Logs

CONTAINER HORIZONTAL CLIMB

PULL SWING

• Visitors are challenged to traverse all four sides of the container walls by carefully planning where to place their feet on various types of footholds and hand holds.

• Visitors can sit astride a loop of large-diameter rope and swing back and forth • While they do this, other visitors can raise and lower the moving swing using the mechanical advantage of an overhead pulley

• One side of the container is a sloped wall for an easier challenge but the other three sides have holds on a vertical surface. Navigating around the corners of the container is an additional challenge

PUSHBOAT STERN: PROPELLOR CRANK, RUDDER TURN

PUSHBOAT STERN: BIG ROPE SWING & ADAPTABLE SWING

• The stern of an authentic river pushboat is mounted 10’ feet in the air giving visitors an unusual view of a Louisville icon. Within the open hull visitors can see bulkheads and propeller shafts and dramatic night lighting will highlight the construction details

• Below the Pushboat visitors sit astride a loop of large diameter rope or buoy swing and swing back and forth. • Below the Pushboat are two adaptable swings as a compliment to the Big Rope Swings

• Using mechanical advantage visitors will turn the large propellers with a hand crank

• ADA Accessible

• In addition to the rotating propeller, the crank mechanism and the opposite side of the rotating propeller shaft will be visible. • Using mechanical advantage visitors will turn the large rudders left and right with a ship’s wheel • The mechanism that connects the wheel to the rudder will be partially visible, allowing kids to see how they can affect something bigger than themselves and overhead. 22
