Launched in December of 2020 through February of 2021, the PlayWorks questionnaire was featured in the website playworksatourwaterfront.org and was available as a paper survey for West End constituents.
The PlayWorks design team spent the latter part of 2020 and early 2021 soliciting feedback and input from community members with the intent to affirm and confirm priorities for West End and citywide constituents. While PlayWorks is merely one of six components included in Waterfront Park Phase IV, the new play area will serve as the initial flagship investment once the Metropolitan Sewer District completes work on its $200M Waterway Protection Tunnel. Community members in close proximity to this public investment were encouraged to weigh in; particularly those residing at City View Apartments, Henry Greene Apartments and Hampton Place Apartments, as well as readers of Colors Newspaper. Printed materials were also made available for visitors and patrons of the Western, Portland, and Shawnee branches of the Louisville Free Public Library. Please visit PlayWorksAtOurWaterfront.org for insights on the engagement and design process to date. We will remain committed to designing a space of inclusion for all by cocreating, with community, throughout the design process.

All of it. The more challenging & scary the more we want to teach bravery & confidence to try it." I don’t like heights, but I’d go up in the nets for my kids. I think you all have a great balance of safety and appropriate opportunities for risky play." The towers would be a challenge, but the grandkids can get me to try anything."

Impact on Design: Key Conclusions The 977 responses of the PlayWorks questionnaire will be critical in shaping future iterations of the design. As shown below, the key take-aways focus on improving spaces to make this a more welcoming and inclusive space.
What We Heard: Our Goals for PlayWorks The results of this online questionnaire have provided the design team a deep understanding of the community's priorities and expectations for PlayWorks. The overall results demonstrate great excitement and support for this proposed community amenity. The responses summarized herein demonstrate that community members were both thoughtful in their feedback and prioritize a high-quality investment for both the West End and Waterfront Park. While we heard the excitement, we also noted several concerns. We recognize the impact of day-today park operations and how management must ensure all visitors feel authentically welcome and invested in this new and exciting space. Design and co-creation is a reiterative process. After analyzing the results of this most recent survey, the design team has uncovered the key take-aways listed to the right. The next design iteration of PlayWorks will thus strive to be accountable and responsive in achieving these nine goals.
Make clear delineations between active visitor spaces and cyclists/ rollerbladers.
Include additional spaces that appeal to tweens and teens to support a positive intergenerational experience.
Include more sensory/ interactive design elements, ie. music, lights, and textured elements.
Make PlayWorks more accessible for those with limited mobility and in the autism spectrum.
Provide amenities that support a safe and comfortable user experience, such as lighting, restrooms, and green spaces.
Reflect the priorities and concerns of West End Residents in the design, such as Wi-Fi access
Provide spaces for permanent or temporary food and beverage services.
Install adequate lighting and explore other security measures such as cameras and emergency call stations.
Develop more flexible seating areas within the play experiences.
