HUNTINGTON WOODS MASTER PLAN UPDATE

JOINT 11 MILE RD STUDY WITH CITIES OF BERKLEY AND OAK PARK

WHAT IS “LANE REPURPOSING?”

When a roadway has excess capacity in the number or width of travel lanes, these lanes can be narrowed or converted to calm traffic or create room for another use, such as: • Bike lanes • New or wider sidewalks • On-street parking • A two-way center left turn lane • Planted and amenity areas • Green stormwater infrasturcture

This study was the result of a Multi-Community Planning Grant between Berkley, Oak Park and Huntington Woods. The study gathered input from residents and businesses for ways to make the Coolidge and 11 Mile Corridors greener, safer, and more bike and pedestrian friendly.

CITY CAMPUS AREA INTRODUCTION

HUNTINGTON WOODS MASTER PLAN UPDATE

Community Visioning Workshop

Let us know what you think! Provide any additional comments in the box below:

EXISTING CONDITIONS

Private developers have shown interest in the City Campus site. Many of the existing facilities are no longer functional (in particular the public safety facilities). Considering investments in these facilities may include options to redevelop with the mixture of uses on the site and/or consolidating/sharing services with other cities.

Write 1-2 words or add a Post-It.

WHY IS THIS SITE BEING CONSIDERED FOR REDEVELOPMENT? • The site (or portion of) has potential for attached housing. • Public Safety building lacks typical amenities and floods on a regular basis. • DPW yard could be moved and shared with a nearby city. • City Hall and Public Safety could be moved to another location in the City.

OPTION 2 Relocating/Sharing DPW with nearby city.

OPTION 3 Providing funding for a new Public Safety building on the City Campus site.

OPTION 4 Leave things as they are today.

HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES Dot Actvitiy Instructions:

HUNTINGTON WOODS MASTER PLAN UPDATE

What new types of housing would you like to see in Huntington Woods? Place a dot (any color) next to your preferred housing type(s).

WHY IS HUNTINGTON WOODS CONSIDERING HOUSING DIVERSIFICATION OPTIONS? Diversified housing options can create opportunities for… • Smaller housing units. • Some options relieve burden of home maintenance. • Increases available housing options in a contextual manner. • Aging in place (the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level). • More housing opportunities for young families or smaller households. • More residents to support existing and new destinations and amenities.

The size and dimensions of homes in Huntington Woods are regulated by zoning. The city may consider relaxing lot coverage and rear yard setback restrictions in residential zoning districts to allow new construction and renovations to better accommodate housing needs such as ADA accessibility, multigenerational households, flexible work from home options (like increased office space); all while ensuring compatibility with existing neighborhood character.
