“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 (KJV)

Over the past 110 years, Shiloh Baptist Church at Silver Lake, now better known as Shiloh Baptist Church have sung many songs. We have sung, do sing and will be singing songs that help us: rejoice, remember, reflect and realize the awesomeness of our God. Our rejoicing over the years has been in seeing the impossible becoming possible through Jesus Christ. From the first gathering in Belleville’s Silver Lake district to the culmination of the 110th Anniversary we have and are rejoicing. When the people of God rejoice you can always expect a “move of God.” God’s faithfulness has been seen in the past, felt in the present and anticipated it for the future. Let’s keep the way clear for God to move, so let’s keep rejoicing. Hymns that make us remember and reflect like: It Pays to Serve Jesus, God Will Take Care of You and We’re Marching to Zion! Remembering is powerful. Yet it can be an obstacle. What do we want to remember, only the good? Maybe we should remember the good, bad and indifferent but sing only of the good. If we continue to praise bad events or occurrences we limit our vision to see and our ability to move beyond hurt and pain. To move forward to another 110 years will take willpower to forget. The Apostle Paul writes: forgetting those things which are behind, I press for the mark of the high call in Christ Jesus! Why wait for fellow members or those who have offended you, you press and people will follow. One person can start a revolution. What is the realization of the ministry of Shiloh Baptist Church Church? We have been, are and will be a Christ centered church. In order to keep our message real, we have to be real. Today’s world has advancements beyond yesteryears imagination. Since 1906, living and lifestyles have drastically evolved. Advancement in education, technology, the science and civilization are beyond the imaginable perceptions of those of that day. Nevertheless, sinners still need Jesus! Although the style of worship of 1906 has changed, the need for the Gospel is still the same. Let us move forward to be an historical church not a hysterical church. A church that is relevant, purposeful and intentional in being Christian. We will need new methods, plans, and designs to reach the unchurched and unsaved, but our mandate has not changed: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) Reverend Malachia Brantley, Jr., D. Min. Senior Pastor

HISTORY OF SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWARK NJ In 1903 Deacon Grandison Fields and family, Brother Hunt and family, and others started a mission. They first met in prayer meetings from house to house.
At some
point it became necessary to rent a small house at 9 Belmont Avenue in Bloomfield, New Jersey to accommodate their growing numbers. The mission grew rapidly. Soon it was suggested that a minister be acquired to take charge of the functioning of the mission. Reverend W.T. Watkins, Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Orange, New Jersey recommended Reverend William Fitzgerald, a licentiate of Ebenezer, was given charge of the mission. Under Reverend Fitzgerald’s administration the mission progressed very well; soon Reverend Fitzgerald left to continue his work elsewhere. Brother Joseph I. Jackson resigned his membership with Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and united with the Mission. Deacon Jackson took charge of the Sunday School and soon increased the number of children greatly. In 1906 Reverend Peter Smith was sent to our mission. Under his leadership, strongly supported by Deacon Grandison Fields and Deacon Joseph Jackson, the little mission became the Shiloh Baptist Church. The name was taken from the Old Testament book of Joshua 18:1, “And the whole congregation assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them.” The mission needed spiritual assistance and Reverend Richard D. Spain came to Shiloh in February of 1919. Under his leadership, Shiloh members built the original church building.
After 50 years of service, Reverend Spain retired and Reverend Joseph T. Howze was called to lead the flock. During his tenure, Shiloh continued to grow. Reverend Howze led Shiloh for twenty years before his demise. On July 26,1990 Shiloh’s’ congregation chose as its shepherd Reverend John E. Sharpe, accompanied by his wife, First Lady Audrey Sharpe.
Pastor Sharpe opened his pulpit to
welcome four sons of Shiloh: Ministers Larry Williams, David Banks, William Austin, and Terrence Grier into the ministry. He also welcomed our first evangelists, Dr. Sandra Kearney, and Yolanda Lee. On May 25, 2001, Pastor John E. Sharpe was suddenly called home from labor to reward. His demise left an enormous void in the membership and community. On March 13, 2003, the congregation met and elected Reverend Chavalis T. Williams of Jacksonville, Florida, as our new pastor. Reverend Williams served as pastor for three weeks. The Pulpit committee continued their selection for a pastor. On August 19,2003, Reverend Malachia Brantley, Jr. was elected as pastor. Pastor Brantley was installed on Sunday, November 2, 2003, by Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr. of Cathedral International, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Pastor Brantley is truly a visionary person under the Holy Spirit. He preaches Christ, the Hope of the World. We comfort and fellowship with one another as we share the wonderful message of God’s love. We are here “for such a time as this”. Shiloh, the Church on the Rock with a Vision and Mission, is currently celebrating our 110th year as a beacon to the Newark community. With our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we will prevail for another one hundred and ten years.
“He who has begun the good work in you will complete it until the Day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost born of the Virgin Mary. Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy universal church, the Communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
