Pastoral Message
130TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION To God be the glory! Great things God has done, great things God is doing, and great things God shall do. Over 130 years, Calvary Baptist Church has worshipped in God’s presence, worked in God’s power and witnessed to God’s people. Many have come and gone over the years, but through their sacrificial offering and faithful service, through trials and tribulations, through wars and recessions, Calvary Baptist Church has remained steadfast and resilient throughout the years. The church survived and is here today, not because of what the people did, but because of The One who declared: “Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18 KJV). The name Calvary serves as a reminder of the place Jesus purchased our redemption with his life. A place where our inadequacies meet God’s sufficiency. A place where sinners meet the Savior. A place where sadness can turn into gladness. Because of Calvary we embrace all countries and cultures, all classes and creeds, all humanities and hurts, all peoples and personalities. We celebrate the marvelous work God is doing in the midst of Calvary Baptist Church. Calvary Baptist Church has been involved in ministries that are grounded in an integration of faith and social activism in ways that maintain, promote and agitate for God’s justice in every sphere of human life. The ministries of the church incorporate a power of becoming like Christ in all aspects of living that address the total person within his/her particular educational, cultural, political, psychological, social, economic, linguistic and physical environment. This is reflective of the many generations and cultures represented in the church. The church’s style of ministry is premised on a participatory embrace of peoples’ gifts, talents and skills in ways that are empowering, extracting out of members their spiritual resources and to help them connect with God through prayer, evangelism, worship, personal relationship, bible study and acts of ministry. In the words of the Apostle Paul: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now” (Philippians 1:3-5 NIV). May God continue to bless each one of you as we begin a new journey into the next decade. Blessings! Reverend Dr. Joseph Oniyama, Senior Pastor
130th Anniversary Coordinator REVEREND ELLA CORINER JOHNSON
Associate Pastor
On this, the closing occasion of our 130th Anniversary, I thank God for enabling me to persevere. I thank all those from the various committees for their labor of love in making our celebrations memorable. From the inception of November 2016, our pace was not swift; but the champion of the race is for the one who endures to the end. There’s much history in this church to be shared, and there are some families who received and can pass the stories on to those in waiting. As we continue to reflect and plan future celebrations, let us embrace the talents, gifts, and simple offerings to make each celebration--no matter the size--grand and glorious! “For as the body is one, and hath many members…” 1 Corinthians 12:12 Reverend Ella Coriner Johnson, Associate Pastor 130th Anniversary Coordinator

Calvary Baptist Church
A BRIEF HISTORY OF ITS 130 YEARS SERVING GOD AND THE COMMUNITY
From the home of Mary E. Richards, a small group of members from Second Baptist Church in Orange, New Jersey organized to form Calvary Baptist Church in 1887, where Rev. John H. Travis, then Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in New York City, was secured as Pastor. In June 1888, Calvary was incorporated by the State of New Jersey. Calvary later moved worship services to the basement of Calvary Methodist Church on North Clinton Street in East Orange before purchasing a lot on Thompson Street in 1889 for $500. The new structure seated about 70 members. Because of an increased membership driven by the efforts of Betty A. Franklin-Brown, who mortgaged her home for the cause, in June 1905 the congregation invested $6,000 to purchase First Baptist Church on North Maple Avenue in East Orange, affectionately known as Calvary No. 1. Rev. Travis was highly regarded among members, and they sent him to the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) in London, England. On March 1, 1914, Rev. Travis passed away, and in his memory Calvary declared every first Sunday in March Travis Memorial Sunday. Additionally, a portion of the sanctuary was dedicated as the Travis Memorial Room. On Nov. 30, 1914, Rev. E.A.P. Cheeks, a biblical scholar from Columbia, South Carolina, accepted the call to lead Calvary’s flock. His leadership led to many improvements to the church facility, which include the stained glass windows that now adorn Calvary’s narthex, and a pipe organ, which is still in use today. Calvary’s original organ pipes are presently behind the altar. Rev. Cheeks retired his services to accept another charge on October 27, 1924. On February 29, 1925, Rev. Clarence M. Long of Bank Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, assumed the pastorate. Under his leadership, the church purchased a mimeograph machine to produce bulletins, founded Vacation Bible School, which is claimed to be the first in Essex County, and formed an award-winning choir that won competitions in Bordentown, New Jersey four consecutive years. Calvary sent Rev. Long to the Baptist World Alliance in Europe. In 1938, he accepted an offer to pastor in St. Louis, Missouri. On October 21, 1939, Calvary called Rev. Albert Tibbs, then Pastor of Friendship Baptist in Bayonne, New Jersey. On April 10, 1940, Calvary purchased three-quarter acres on Main Street, East Orange, to build a new structure for its flourishing
membership. Shortly thereafter, Rev. Tibbs was inducted into the U.S. Army as Chaplain for two years; and as a result, Calvary’s building project was interrupted. Rev. Tibbs returned but subsequently departed Calvary on August 9, 1950. Three months later in November 1950, an offer was extended to Rev. William R. Bailey, a member of Calvary since childhood. He accepted and returned to Calvary after serving as an Associate Minister at St. Mark’s Social Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Despite a temporary halt in construction from 1953-1954, Rev. Bailey eventually completed construction with help from the late architect Deacon Edward T.
Bowser, Sr. The
membership moved into Calvary No. 2 on Easter Sunday in 1957.
Rev. Bailey is credited with founding the Board of Christian Education, Baptist Young Peoples’ Fellowship, Sunbeam Choir, Boy Scout Troop No. 8, and attaining NAACP Life Membership for Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. Bailey also established Calvary’s relationship with the New Jersey Baptist Convention, revised the Constitution and Bylaws, and implemented the Benevolence offering.
In late 1966, after learning that a new major highway threatened Calvary’s Main Street location, on behalf of the Church, Trustee Chairman, Samuel Greene, Sr., engaged Summit-based architect, Mr. Ralph Jefferson, to build the current edifice at 66 So. Grove Street. The congregation moved into Calvary No. 3 in January 1970, where we remain worshipping today. In 1979, the 10-year $100,000 mortgage for Calvary No. 3 was settled two years ahead of schedule. In 1982, Rev. Bailey’s declining health forced him to relinquish his duties, thereby ending his 32-year pastorate at Calvary. Rev. Bailey went home to be with the Lord on October 11, 1983.
In July 1983, Rev. Keith Cook accepted the call to pastor Calvary after serving as an Associate Pastor since November 1982. During his five-year pastorate, Rev. Cook reorganized the Order of Worship, introduced Bible Study classes, and increased the number of staff musicians. The Family Task Force and Theater Ensemble were organized as well as installation of a central air conditioning system under Rev. Cook’s administration. The Constitution and Bylaws were revised in 1987. In the same year, Calvary celebrated its 100th Anniversary with a special banquet at Scott’s Manor in Orange, New Jersey. In 1988, Rev. Cook left Calvary to relocate to Virginia.
The Joint Boards, under the leadership of Deacon James Robinson, Sr., Trustee Samuel Greene, Sr., and the Associate Clergy, governed the church during the vacancy of the pastorate. After more than two years, the Pulpit Search Committee recommended that Rev. Glenmore Bembry, Jr. from First Baptist Church in Jersey City become Calvary’s next Pastor. He accepted and the congregation called him to serve on October 14, 1991. During his time as Pastor, Calvary expanded its ministerial staff with Associate Ministers, serving in areas of Christian Education, Youth Evangelism, and Visitation. The Women’s and Men’s Ministries were also formed to focus on spiritual growth of the congregation. The formation of Children’s Church and after school tutorial programs were enriched outreach to youth in the church and community. A church van was also purchased to shuttle members to and from services, as well as office equipment to produce bulletins and assist staff with administrative tasks. In addition, Rev. Bembry led delegations of Calvary members on two trips to Israel and the Holy Land. Rev. Bembry left Calvary in 2001 for Trinity Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. Later that year, one among us was chosen. The Pulpit Search Committee recommended Rev. Joseph Oniyama, one of the key members shepherding Calvary through a period of adjustment, to serve as Pastor. Rev. Oniyama was called to pastor Calvary in October 2001 and installed as Pastor a few months later in February 2002. Rev. Oniyama is recognized for organizing spiritual retreats for the congregation, annual training sessions for leaders and Sunday School teachers, as well as new member fellowships. In coordination with the Media Ministry, intermediate and advanced computer classes were offered to members and their families. In 2004, Rev. Oniyama led a delegation of youth and chaperones to the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) in Hong Kong followed by a youth missions retreat to Jamaica in 2007. The church believes in the Great Commission to “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel.” (Matthew 28:20) Delegations from Calvary also attended the 2010 BWA in Hawaii and South Africa in 2015. Rev. Oniyama received the Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program award in 2005. As a result of this honor, Rev. Oniyama inspired the congregation to form small groups with the purpose of community outreach based upon the teachings of Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Purpose and 40 Days of Community programs. Burdened with a passion to serve others, members of one of the “40 Days” groups began the Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen Ministry that currently serves over 200 persons weekly at the Calvary.
In 2012 Calvary purchased a new fifteen passenger Church bus. The bus is used to transport senior citizens, youth, and other members to Sunday morning church services, excursions to other churches for fellowship, choir
rehearsals
and
Calvary-sponsored
outings. The Church bus has been a part of the East Orange Memorial Day Parade for many years. Another memorable event that took place in 2012 was the ordination of the first female Reverends at Calvary – Rev. Ella Coriner Johnson, Rev. Robin Greene Webb, and Rev. Geraldine Clark. 2013
brought
another
milestone!
At
the
Annual Church Conference a recommendation was made for Rev. Robin Greene Webb to become the Assistant Pastor of Calvary. The recommendation was met with a unanimous vote of support. As a way of taking the Gospel outside of the four walls of the church, in September 2017, “Strong in the Lord,” a weekly broadcast of Calvary Baptist Church began airing on WBJL Radio located in Roselle, New Jersey every Sunday from 8-9 A.M. The broadcast can be received using iTunes, computer, smart phone and a dial-in phone number. At the 2017 Annual Church Conference a Constitutional Amendment was proposed by Pastor Oniyama to replace the Joint Board of Deacons and Trustees with an Executive Committee. Indeed Calvary has been blessed by the Lord with a rich and illustrious 130-year history of anointed pastors and leaders, inspirational preaching and an uplifting Music Ministry; and, most importantly a dedicated Christian congregation.
