The Life Reflections of Delia Delores Lapeyrolerie

Delia Delores Lapeyrolerie (née Riddle) was born in Montclair, New Jersey on Saturday, November 13, 1926. She was one of four children born to the late Clarence and Pearl Riddle.

Delia graduated from Montclair High School and matriculated at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Her recently deceased son, Jacques B. Lapeyrolerie, D.D.S. would follow in her footsteps as an alumnus of Central State University.

While at Central State University, Delia became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Upon graduation, she was conferred the degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology. Following graduation, Delia was granted a position at the Library of Congress in our nation’s capital. While there, Delia met her future husband, Frank M. Lapeyrolerie, who was a dental student at Howard University. In 1951, Delia married Dr. Frank M. Lapeyrolerie.

The young couple moved to Delia’s native Montclair upon Frank’s graduation from Howard University College of Denistry as he pursued specialty training in Oral Surgery at Harlem Hospital in New York City. It was in Montclair that their first child, Jacques, was born. The couple then moved to California with the United States Air Force, where they spent three years. It was in California that their second child, Michele Marie, was born.

Delia and Frank then moved back to Washington, D.C. for a brief time where Frank took on a faculty position at Howard University College of Dentistry.

They then settled back in Montclair, New Jersey, where Daryl Allyn, Donna Annette and Crystal Monique were born. Coincidentally, Delia was a twin (twin sister, Doris) and gave birth to twins (Daryl and Donna) herself.

Delia coveted her role as wife and mother. Delia’s loyalty to her family was tenacious and unequivocal. She taught by example that “nothing in life is more important than being a good person”. This was her true life’s dedication. She taught this philosophy not only to her children, but also to scores of children for whom the doors of her home were always open and who considered her a surrogate mother. Indeed, “Mrs. Lap” was loved by many. Delia Delores Lapeyrolerie transitioned peacefully from this life on Friday, November 22, 2013, nine days after her 87th Birthday. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Frank M. Lapeyrolerie and her son, Dr. Jacques Barry Lapeyrolerie (Lauren) and two siblings, Leon Riddle and twin, Doris Sully (née Riddle). She is survived by her brother Raymond Riddle of West Orange, New Jersey; four children, Dr. Michele M. Lapeyrolerie-Torian (Doug) of New York, New York, Dr. Donna A. Lapeyrolerie-Johnson of Norfolk, Virginia (Brian), Dr. Daryl A. Lapeyrolerie of Greer, South Carolina (Jacqueline), Crystal M. Lapeyrolerie of Montclair, New Jersey; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

A Tribute to Delia Delores Lapeyrolerie Footprints in the Sand (~Mary Stevenson~)

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints; other times there were one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, “You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?” The Lord replied, “The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, is when I carried you.” Barry Williams John Paul Jones
