Message from the Moderator Reverend Geraldine Clark Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God for fifty-plus one-years of being led by the Spirit of God to serve God’s people in an urban community where we express our faith and purpose in Jesus Christ through the local church. This year’s theme is “Double Portion.” I pray that God will bless pastors and laypersons abundantly with His love and compassion as we are called to minister and pray for those experiencing food insecurity, financial hardships, homelessness, mental health issues, grief and loss during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the past, the Association journeyed from sanctuary to sanctuary, engaging in relevant seminars, workshops, and community outreach activities. For the first time in the history of the Association, we are celebrating three days of worship, fellowship and witnessing via Zoom videoconferencing. We are excited and thank God for this new platform to spread the Gospel message post-pandemic. The Association’s history can be traced back to the New Jersey Baptist Convention. In 1830, the name was changed to the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, Inc. (ABCNJ) The Essex Association evolved from the “Essex Cluster,” which is now the largest of eight associations with approximately 64 churches in covenant relationship with God and each other. Congratulations to Rev. James S. Kang, pastor of First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church of Newark, one of eight historical congregations in the Essex Association ABCNJ. First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church has maintained its congregation and continuous membership in ABCNJ since 1801. Congratulations to Rev. Cedric McKoy, pastor of Beulah Grove Baptist Church of Newark, the newest congregation to join the Essex Association of ABCNJ in 2017. In our outreach and evangelism efforts, we are called and empowered to witness and lead others out of a life of darkness into a loving covenant relationship with God through the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “I pray that your love will overflow more and more and that you will keep growing in knowledge and understanding” (Philippians 1:9 NLT). Blessings! Reverend Geraldine Clark, Moderator Essex Association ABCNJ, Inc. Motto: “The local Church is the fundamental unit of mission in denominational life.”
