THE GOSPEL IS COMPELLING The Gospel is the greatest news ever known. We will go out of our way to make it easy for our world to know God, as we live and point the way to Him.
WORSHIP IS OUR LIFESTYLE Hearts of gratitude are the natural response to changed lives. We have been changed and find our joy in magnifying Him through acts of worship and praise— daily celebrating who He is and what He has done. TOGETHER IS BETTER Growth God’s way takes place in community. We look for every opportunity to gather together—making Sunday and small groups our priority as we affirm and encourage one another in friendships that demonstrate the love of Christ.
At First Baptist Church of South Orange, God has called us to be deliberate in how we do ministry. We remain faithful to and focused on the vision that God has given us. That vision includes a set of values—guiding themes that serve as our filter as we continually strive to point the way to Christ.
God’s word is the foundation of our lives, giving us direction in everything we do. We focus on Bible teaching that we can apply to our lives and share with others, making what God has done for us relevant and accessible for all.
GOD IS AT WORK Each generation is strengthened by the other. We know we are living the vision when we are passing down the legacy of faith with passion. We are committed to ministering to all ages—thinking beyond ourselves individually, supporting effective ministry, and pointing the way to Jesus for all people, in all stages of life.
GOD IS AT WORK In our church, in our homes, in our careers, in our community and beyond—God is actively working to draw people to Him and to glorify Himself through our everyday lives. We live joyfully and expectantly looking for opportunities to impact the world around us for God.
OUR MISSION IS TO POINT THE WAY—TO FOLLOW CHRIST, TO GROW TOGETHER, AND TO IMPACT THE WORLD FOR GOD.
OUR CORE VALUES
SCRIPTURE IS THE BOTTOM LINE
At First Baptist Church Of South Orange, we are a community of regular people changed by an amazing God. This change started by someone pointing the way to God in our lives. Now we live pointing the way to others. Inside our walls and even more outside them, we are driven by the good news of Jesus Christ that makes us His children and wraps us in the richness of His love. We are driven to point the way.
PASTOR’S MESSAGE MY BEAUTIFUL SPOUSE, LADY NaDEEN, AND I COUNT IT ALL JOY HAVING HAD THE INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE GOD AND THE FAMILY OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF SOUTH ORANGE for the past two and a half decades. Twenty-five years later, we are just as excited and honored to be part of this growing ministry. We never fathomed the level of growth and sustained spiritual transformation many would come to experience in Christ here. Our hearts’ desire has been to glorify God and honor Him through impactful preaching and teaching. Approaching ministry with the conviction The Word of God has the power to transform lives, our sole focus has been to connect people to the eternal truths of God’s Word and the abiding presence, power, and relationship of the Holy Spirit. We pray each of you come to experience God’s presence and power in your life.

Dr. Richardson attended Central High School in Maryland where he played basketball until suffering an ACL and Medial/Lateral Meniscus tears injuries. After recovering from his injuries Dr. Richardson was unable to return to basketball. But as the saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. This opened door led to Dr. Richardson joining the Track and Field team where he broke several school and state records for the 100m, 200m & 400m races. In addition, he received a Congressional Award, is listed as Who’s Who among high school graduates in academics, and was offered a full scholarship in Track and Field to Temple University, Philadelphia, P.A.
Dr. Terry Richardson and his wife, Lady NaDeen Richardson arrived at First Baptist Church in February 1997 where they serve as Senior Pastor and First Lady. They brought with them gifts of evangelism, exhortation, and worship. As an anointed teacher and spiritual leader, Dr. Richardson with the help of Lady Richardson introduced a spirit-filled style of Biblical preaching, teaching and worship to service and Bible Study. Their ministry had an immediate impact. Membership
During his first week at Temple, Dr. Richardson met a young lady named NaDeen Bridgeforth at the welcome to campus dance. They later discovered they were both freshman recruits for the track team and that God intended for them to be teammates for life. On July 8, 1989 they entered into the covenant of marriage.
DR. TERRY RICHARDSON was born in Madison, Illinois. He is the second born child of David and Evon Richardson. Dr. Richardson was first introduced to God through his parents and attended his family church, New Macedonia Baptist Church in Washington, DC. As a young boy he felt that church worship had little impact on him, but over time he realized the impact was greater than he thought and at the age of 16 he dedicated his life to God.
Dr. Richardson cherishes God’s call on his life to advance the Kingdom. He credits his loving and understanding wife, Lady Richardson, as the backbone of their life ministry. His loyal children, supportive congregation, and his lifelong mentors, Bishop Troy Bronner, Bishop Marvin Bradshaw, Rev. Kevin Clark, Bishop Donald Hillard, the late Rev. Leon Sullivan, and his and Lady Richardson’s covering Pastor and friends of many years, Dr. John K. and First Lady, Trina Jenkins.
Dr. Richardson’s leadership has not only had a significant impact regionally, but also globally. He has worked alongside the late Leon Sullivan to address world matters, and accompanied Sullivan on global initiatives to West Africa and the United Nations. Under his leadership, First Baptist has built secondary schools in Ghana, Swaziland and Liberia, stocked libraries and built water wells. Together with local and global partners, First Baptist has also rebuilt communities hit hardest by natural disasters.
Dr. Richardson’s outstanding leadership effectiveness, and community impact has been recognized by prestigious organizations like Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., NAACP of the Oranges and vicinity, Christian Talk Radio, Essex County Prosecutor Office and National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the South Orange Rotary, and South Orange Civic Association.
Dr. Richardson is an Amazon Best-Selling Co-Author for his contributing chapter entitled, “Ignoring Pain Will Not Make It Go Away.” in the anthology, Soul Talk, vol. 2 by Cheryl Polote-Williamson. He currently is a Governing Board Member of the South Orange Performing Arts Center and member of “Building One America.”
grew rapidly and within a few short years First Baptist went from 50 active members to over 1,500 which required two additional services to be added along with ministries and discipleship classes. Under Dr. Richardson, a more Biblecentered Church Constitution was written and adopted. The church acquired additional property and launched a church expansion campaign.FirstBaptist has planted over $600,000.00 in the effort to address hunger, imprisonment, homelessness, domestic violence, education, health, youth programs, mental illness and innercity violence. Under the “No Child Left Behind Act,” Dr. Richardson created “Knowledge Is Power,” an afterschool program to help students who are unable to afford supplemental education and tutoring. He also created “Eternal Light,” a community development program aimed at addressing economic and social hardships for poorer community residences.

NaDeen Bridgeforth and Terry Richardson met in 1984 on the dance floor at a “Welcome to Temple” party their first month during their freshman year in college. They were married on July 8, 1989 and on February 2, 1997 they were called to pastor the First Baptist Church of South Orange. Over the past 25 years the church has grown in numbers and in spirit. The ministry is one of reconciliation, first with the Father and then with one another, particularly families. Lady Richardson is an anointed Psalmist, Teacher and Praise & Worship Leader. She is the Director of the Family Life Edification Department at First Baptist Church, overseeing six active ministries. Her desire is that God would use the gift of music and teaching which He has placed in her to draw as many people to the Kingdom as He desires, and that hearts would be opened and healed through His Word.
Lady Richardson traveled the United States at an early age competing for the Newark Y Track Club and representing the great city of Newark, as a member of the United States Youth Games and the USA Track & Field National Championships. This love and passion for track lead her to complete her High School career becoming a NJSIAA State Champion and State Record Holder in the 200 Meter Dash, Long Jump, 100 and 400 Meter Hurdles. After considering multiple offers, in 1984 she accepted a full scholarship to Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.

It is an honor to welcome you to the 25th Pastoral Anniversary Gala in celebration of Rev. Dr. Terry L. Richardson and First Lady NaDeen Richardson. They’ve shown up through illness and personal trials, not only for congregants but for our family, friends and the wider community. Each and every one of our lives has been greatly impacted by their selflessness and leadership. It is through their life ministry that we have truly encountered The Real Love of God. WELCOME & PRAYER A Heart to Shepherd
Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr. has been preaching the Good News since he was licensed as a minister in 1973 at 15 years old. From an early age, he developed a love for the Lord and felt a call to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral journey began in February 1987 when he was called to serve as the senior pastor at Union Bethel Church in King George, Va. Nearly three years of pastoring at Union Bethel proved to be the training ground for his upcoming assignment. In October of 1988, Pastor Jenkins learned of the passing of his pastor and mentor, Dr. John W. Johnson, from his home church at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. One year after Dr. Johnson’s passing, Pastor Jenkins returned to First Baptist to become the seventh shepherd. The fruit of his biblically based teaching is evidenced in the growth of church membership from 500 to more than 10,000. Today, an average 11,000 people attend weekly Sunday services between two campuses located in Landover and Upper Marlboro, Md. With the support of his wife, Trina, and their loving family, Pastor Jenkins is able to expand his ministry beyond the walls of First Baptist. In addition to his role as senior pastor, he is the board chairman for the National Association of Evangelicals, Project Bridges and The Skinner Institute. The Skinner Institute was founded in 1992 by the late Reverend Tom and Dr. Barbara Skinner. He also serves as a board member for Denver Seminary, the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable and University of Maryland Capital Region Health. For two years, Pastor Jenkins served as vice president/executive director of National Ministries with Converge Worldwide. He was formerly on the boards of Great Dads, Teen Challenge, and a local bank. Under the leadership of Pastor Jenkins, First Baptist founded SHABACH! Ministries, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 arm of the church in 1996. Today he serves as chairman emeritus for SMI, which provides clothing, food, education and other resources in the Washington, D.C., area. He has traveled across the world preaching and teaching about the love of Jesus Christ. And after pastoring at First Baptist since 1989, he remains steadfast in his quest to “develop dynamic disciples.” He is recognized as a catalyst to help individuals grow into lifelong Christian disciples who follow Jesus Christ. Pastor Jenkins believes that these individuals will impact the world on behalf of the Lord, thereby strengthening families and healing broken hearts along the way. In 2001, Pastor Jenkins received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Southern California School of Ministry in Inglewood, California. After becoming a licensed pilot in 2002, he takes great delight in flying. Even with his many obligations, Pastor Jenkins holds his role as family man as the highest treasure. He and his wife are the proud parents of six children and six grandchildren.
