Joseph (Joe) Eugene Null, Jr. Joseph ( Joe) Eugene Null, Jr. was born on Wednesday, November 2, 1927 in Alabama to the late Middie (nee Evans) and Joseph Null, Sr. He was the eldest of two children, and was pre-deceased by his brother, Junior. He departed this life on Thursday, June 11, 2015. Joe was educated in the Alabama school system, graduating from Parker High School in Birmingham in 1943. After graduation, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1944. He served until September 1951, receiving an Honorable Discharge. In 1947, Joe married the late Mary Hall. He was also the father of four: a daughter, Linda Crawley-Simmons (Bobby) of Georgia; three sons, Reginald Null of Newark, Joseph Arnold Null (Deceased), and Curtis Eugene Null; step-son, William Hall; and grandson, Jamahl Joseph Null. Joe was appointed to the position of Patrolman with the Newark Police Department in February 1961. He later became one of the first Black officers to be assigned to the Newark Police Department’s Crime Prevention Bureau (CPU), which later became the Newark Police Tactical Force. In August 1969, Joe was promoted to Detective, where he became one of the first Black detectives assigned to the infamous Newark Police Bandit Squad, which investigated shootings, robberies, bank robberies, and other major crimes. Throughout his tenure with the Newark Police Department, Joe received numerous Departmental Commendations and awards, and he was well known by police departments throughout the state. You could often hear him on the police radio during the early morning hours, calling for backup as he had arrested an actor in a crime. In 1992, after 31 years with the Newark Police Department, Joe retired. Not one to be idle, he became a Private Investigator, working with Al Spearman and some of the top attorneys in the state. Joe loved life and marched to his own beat. If he was your friend, he was a true friend. He will always be remembered for his big cigars, huge medallion, and his fishing trips. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Joseph ( Joe) Eugene Null, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory his “adopted” family, retired Captain John Scott-Bey, Dianne “Marie” Scott-Bey, and Goddaughter, Ebony Scott-Bey Cutchin, and a host of other relatives and friends. During his lengthy illness, Joe was lovingly cared for by Crystal Cunningham. Crystal pampered Joe, and she knew how to get him to eat.
