Michael ’s Life Reflection
Michael Tee began his life journey on February 19, 1958 in Detroit, MI, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses and Jewel Jeanette Richardson. Michael attended Detroit Public schools and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1974. Michael continued his education at Specs Howard School of Media Arts where he studied Radio Broadcasting, graduating in 1976. The year 1992 marked a special time in Michael’s life, Michael accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized; and he married the love of his life, Robin. Michael and Robin were blessed with four beautiful children: Ashley; Sidney; and twins, Arell and Ariele; and two adorable granddaughters, Kennedy and Madison. The only thing Michael enjoyed more than radio was his family. In his spare time Michael enjoyed computer programing but his favorite weekend activity was barbecuing while spending time with his family. In the late 70’s Michael could be found DJing in several different Detroit clubs before his start in radio. His passion for radio began in 1976 at WMJC/WABX (Greater Detroit Area) where he worked as an on-air personality for four years. His career in radio has provided him opportunities with various stations throughout the East & Midwest including WDKX – Rochester, NY (On-air Personality), WVGB - Beaufort, SC (Program Director), WVOI - Toledo, OH (Program Director), WJLB/WMXD - Greater Detroit Area (On-air Personality),WENN - Birmingham, AL (Midday/ Production Director), KMJJ Shreveport, LA (Program Director), and Tama Broadcasting - Jacksonville, FL (Program Director) leaving his mark at each. Michael also consulted on several radio projects with WBZJ (Raleigh, NC), WRZE (Florence, SC), and WZTF (Florence, SC). Michael spent the final eleven years of his career here in Charleston, SC, with Apex Broadcasting as Program Director of both WXST Star 99.7 and WMXZ 99.3 The Box. You would often hear family and colleagues refer to Star 99.7 as “Michael’s baby”. While with Star 99.7 Michael succeeded in making Star the number one station in Charleston for 11 years. His dedication was unsurpassed by the fight he was facing; continuing to work from home up until the final weeks of his battle. Michael cherished his many professional & personal relationships that he developed over his nearly 35 years in the radio and broadcasting industry. His absence will be felt the greatest amongst the loyal local listeners, Apex Broadcasting staff and fellow broadcasting colleagues in the area. Throughout the years, Michael has been recognized for his high standards of achievement in the radio business. While in Shreveport, Michael was recognized by Radio Ink as the 5th best African American program director in the United States. He also played a significant part in KMJJ’s move to the Cumulus Media family. Michael and his wife Robin owned several businesses together: a record pool called MADD Records (Michigan Association of Dance DJs); music store Discount Music in Shreveport, LA; KRS Shoes and First Friday LLC in Charleston, SC. He also held a seat on the Black Expo South Board of Directors. Michael is deeply loved and cherished by his beloved wife, Robin; children, Ashley Swilley, Sidney Tee, Arell Tee and Ariele Tee; two granddaughters, Kennedy and Madison; parents, Ulysses and Jewel Jeanette Richardson of Miami, FL; two brothers, Ulysses Richardson, Jr. of Detroit, MI and Larry (Michelle) White of Detroit, MI; three sisters, Latangia (Reginald) RichardsonFischer of Canton, MI, Othella Theresa Geldhof of Miami, FL and Anna (Lloyd) Poe of Detroit, MI; two brother-in-laws, Marcus Davis and Reginald (Anita) Davis; two sister-in-laws, Debra Lattner and Gina Hooks all of Detroit, MI; and a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two of his lifelong friends, Roger Moore and Gerald McBride.
