I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago One day I saw a sign that read, “Heavens Grocery Store”. When I got a little closer the doors swung open wide And when I came to myself I was standing inside. I saw a host of angels. They were standing everywhere. One handed me a basket and said, “My child, shop with care.” Everything a human needed was in that grocery store. And what you could not carry, you could come back for more. First I got some Patience, Love was in that same row. Further down was Understanding, you need that everywhere you go. I got a box or two of Wisdom and Faith a bag or two. I couldn’t miss the Holy Ghost. For it was all over the place. I stopped to get some Strength and Courage to help me run this race. My basket was getting full but I remembered I needed Grace, And then I chose Salvation for Salvation was for free. I tried to get enough of that to do for you and me. Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill, For I thought I had everything to do the Masters will. As I went up the aisle I saw Prayer and put that in, For I knew when I stepped outside I would run into sin. Peace and Joy were plentiful, the last things on the shelf. Song and Praise were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then I said to the angel, “How much do I owe?” He smiled and said, “Just take them everywhere you go.” Again I asked “Really now, how much do I owe?” “My child” he said, “God paid your bill a long, long time ago.”

Deaconess Rutha Mae Bivens was born February 20, 1926, the ninth of ten children born to the late John and Rilla Broadaway in Marshville, North Carolina and departed this life Tuesday, August 22, 2017. In June 1948, Deaconess Bivens married her husband the late George Bivens and migrated to New York City. They were blessed with two children, Nelson and Bernadine. In 1950, Deaconess Bivens accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young woman, at the Prophetic Church of God, New York City under the leadership of the late Reverend H. E. Green. In 1973 she and her family united to the church family at Congregational Church of God under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. William Aaron and later the late Reverend Dr. Levorn Aaron. Deaconess Bivens was a dedicated Sunday School Junior Class teacher for over 30 years teaching young people the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was also an ordained deaconess. She also served as a concerned Youth Advisor for the Youth Fellowship and later was a Mother of the congregation. Deaconess Bivens’ commitment and love for God was always exhibited through her gentle words and action. She possessed a great love for helping anyone in any way that she could. Deaconess Bivens served her Lord and the congregation faithfully even unto death regardless of medical situation or limitation. Deaconess Bivens’ character reflected that she was a frequent shopper in her favorite citation, “Heaven’s Grocery Store.” Deaconess Rutha Mae Bivens leaves to celebrate her life: one daughter, Bernadine (Marvin); and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends, who loved her dearly.
