New food, new look, new prices

For the spring 2011 semester students will find a cafeteria filled with new couches, tables, decorations, and -- best of all -- good food at HCC, all from a new vendor In the week before classes started, I walked into the cafeteria expecting the same old plain tables and chairs accompanied by a dispirit atmosphere that always seemed to occupy the café. But to my surprise it was decorated with tropical plants and brand new furniture that lightened up the place.

Although the cafeteria was serving food ranging from the normal breakfast items to a variety of burgers many workers were bustling to and fro still setting up soda machines and inputting prices into the register.

The reason for all this change is the cafeteria has a new company managing it: Creations in Catering.

Actually, the company isn’t really new to the campus after all; for about 15 years the company managed the cafeteria. Then around 2004 they decided to do catering at Dole Can-

Oili explains that the cafeteria staff is flexible to making a variety of food items because the chefs working for the company have more experience and been working longer than the chefs from the culinary arts program.

The prices for the food will stay somewhat the same throughout the school year. Prices for lunch menu items ranged from as low

as $2 to $6 while plate lunches ranged from $5 to $7. Of course, I took all this in over a mushroom burger and fries from the cafeteria, it was delicious not to mention big. The burger was so juicy and savory that just writing about it makes me hungry for one. The burger was topped with juicy mushrooms and oozing cheese that would eventually be consumed with great joy and satisfaction.

Being a college studen, I try to cut costs as much as possible, and since I like to eat a lot, my food budget is a little bigger than most.

To my delight the HCC cafeteria offers a new menu at a more reasonable price than last semester's.

I tried the mushroom burger with Swiss cheese with French fries for $5.75. The fries were nice

and crispy, but the seasoning could have been better. Thank goodness for ketchup.

The burger, however, I enjoyed a lot more. It was served on a wheat sesame seed bun and came with a slice of lettuce and tomato.

there was a creamy flavor to complement every bite of the smoky and savory burger patty. The garlicsautéed mushrooms gave it the final kick.

Some people may remember the lunch wagon that would stop by on campus last semester. They offered a similar burger which was pretty tasty, but the one I had from the cafeteria stands toe to toe with the wagon’s and is nearly a dollar cheaper.

I want to welcome all new, returning, transfer students to Spring 2011. For all of you who don't me, my name is Jen,and I'm the Editor of The Ka La. I also work at Student Life and Development where I probably made some of you a school ID. I have a great feeling about 2011, despite the terrible weather that we've been having.

Every year, I like to make resolutions and this year is no different.

This year, I made a couple of resolutions that, so far, I've done a pretty good job in keeping. Here are some of my resolutions: 1. To keep up with all my homework and turn them in ON TIME.

2. To exercise and lose weight.

3. To produce a newspaper that you, the readers, want to read.

4. To enter Ka La in a Journalism contest and WIN. I'm really excited about taking on these challenges and all I can say is, "Bring it on."

The Duke vs. The Dude: It's all True Grit

True Grit is the latest film written and directed

by Joel and David Coen. It is based on the 1968 novel

by Charles Portis that was later made into a movie starring John Wayne in 1969.The Coen Brothers, who are known for such films as No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski and Fargo, strayed from their usual style when they recreated this westernstyle film.

The story is a simple one. Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) is a headstrong young woman who wants justice for the murder of her father. She seeks that justice in Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), a drunk, fat and seemingly

over-the-hill cowboy.

They set out on a manhunt across Indian territory with the longwinded Texas Ranger LaBeouf (Matt Damon) in pursuit of the killer Tom Chaney (Josh

What I liked about the movie was that there seemed to be a great chemistry between the actors and the characters they were playing, especially

when Bridges and Damon bicker across the campfire. Hailee Steinfeld gave a standout performance, her every line of dialogue laced with precocious wit.

The Dude vs. The Duke: There seems to be some debate in the Internet movie world as to who was a better Rooster Cogburn: Jeff Bridges who was lovingly known as “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski or John Wayne,“The Duke.” a cinema icon who made more cowboy movies than any other actor.

What is True Grit? It’s a firmness of character, and Jeff Bridges is exactly that as Rooster Cogburn. He is dry but comical, reminding us that the old west was probably just as funny as it was deadly.

29 years later, Tron Legacy kicks it up a notch

Tron Legacy is not a reimagining of the original, but a sequel to the 1982 classic Tron. Now 29 years later, the story focuses on Sam, the son of the main character.

Sam goes on a journey of discovery to uncover the mysteries of his father's disappearance.

If you remember the original Tron, then you will have an understanding of the sequel. In the original the main character Kevin Flynn, played

by Jeff Bridges, is a video game arcade owner who gets pulled into the digital world while working on a secret project. Fast forward to Tron Legacy.

I still think of Jeff Bridges as the quintessential “Dude” from The Big Lebowski, and Bridge's inner hippie does rise to the surface while delivering

The visual effects are certainly an improvement over the original movie. as well they should be.

The glowing power lines

on the suits as well as the buildings give Legacy an appeal that could be considered digital elegance in a cyberpunk universe. As a fan of the original film, I was impressed with the Light Cycle redesign, and equally entertained by the new vehicles. The gladiatorial style games were a staple of the original Tron, and I was disappointed that they did not provide additional blood sport.

Overall, this movie was entertaining. If you’re a fan of the original Tron then you have to see this movie; however, don’t invest hard earned money in the 3D experience since only parts of the movie were filmed in 3D. The live action scenes are still in 2D and I felt as if the 3D segments were slapped together at the last minute.

Tron Legacy was worth the matinee price and nothing more.

The Eagle, featuring Channing Tatum as a Roman solider who sets out to honor his fathers memory by discovering what happened to his father’s fallen legion, and the golden emblem of Rome that they had with them.

Gnomeo and Juliet, takes the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet and twists it on its head as the forbidden love story of two garden gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet.

Just Go With It, Starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

Sandler plays a man who fakes being a soon to be divorcee to get the woman of his dreams. Aniston plays his friend who fakes being his soon to be ex-wife along with her kids.

Justin Bieber 3D: Never Say Never. ‘nuff said.

Unknown, Liam Neeson stars a man who awakes from a coma to find his identity has been taken by someone else, and even his wife claims to not know him.

Feb. 18 Big Momma’s House 3: Like Father, Like Son Martin Lawrence is back in drag and this time his stepson Trent must go undercover at an all girls school after Trent witnesses a murder.

I am Number Four. Nine aliens that resemble humans were sent to Earth in hopes of surviving.

Someone is seeking out to kill them, the first three are already dead, and number four is on the run.

Feb. 25 Drive Angry 3D -- Nicolas Cage is a man who has escaped from Hell to hunt down those responsible for the murder of his daughter.

Hall Pass, Owen Wilson stars as a married man whose wife has granted him a ‘hall pass’ so that he can have an affair with her permission.

Shelter Julianne Moore is a psychiatrist who discovers that her mental patients multiple personalities are all actual murder victims.
