WELCOME to the 2019 Spring Edition of The Black Label! It’s truly been a great year for Black Label breeders and families. This time around I don’t have a formal letter, but instead a few points I would like to share. GIVING KIDS OPPORTUNITY The quest for excellence can only be achieved when fueled by opportunity. Many years ago, a gentleman who saw my passion for the registered business fueled my quest. Gene Raymond, of GV Limousin in Garnett, Kansas knew my family couldn’t afford his best stock but he also knew I would do everything possible from feeding to daily care to make sure my animal looked it’s best. He took a chance on me and it changed my life. The opportunity he gave me led to countless open doors with awesome people behind each one. THE BLACK LABEL GROUP BELIEVES EACH AND EVERY KID DESERVES SOMEONE WHO BELIEVES IN THEM AND THEIR ABILITY. DIFFERENT KINDS, SAME GOALS Form and function from an animal standpoint plays into build and balance. All of us have different terminology and preferences. For example, I like them with a little more extension and shape with cool, sharp features, and impeccable, problem-free structure; but my good friend,Casey Hilmes, will take his stock a rib shorter, ½ frame score smaller with a cool square look but still loves a high level of skeletal integrity, like a good stockman should. We all like to win, we all like the backdrop, but we still have to maintain a disciplined breeding program with cattle who thrive and produce in our respective climates and environments. We have been able to produce bulls who influence their respective breeds and make females who are competitive at the highest level — nothing thrown to the side. The point is, you are buying from a group who has an unquenchable passion to breed and select the highest quality for this offering, year in and year out. We each approach it a little different, but together we’re a cohesive group who gets along within, calls each other to bounce breeding decisions, bull selection, or facility improvement suggestions. At Shipwreck Cattle Company, we are absolutely stoked about this set of 2018 fall born calves. This is the first cattle we have offered out of Chanel in a public auction. Chanel is a past FWSSR Champion, Reserve Champion Purebred Pair at the 2017 AJSA Summer Classic, a many time division and class winning female. She is backed by the potent Melody cow family, which built the entire Wager/ CK Cattle programs in SD and sired by Broker, the champion maker. Chanel has and continues to make friends with each visitor to Grandview. Lots 1, 2, and 3 are the only females that exist on each mating at this time, thus making it even more intriguing to tie on. 912F, by 20-20 is one that surfaces for many. Her build and look is truly impeccable with the shape and refinement that is desired. 20-20 stamps his cattle with look and there’s nothing out of the ordinary with this one.

He leads the breed as the top 1% for YW, 2% for WW, top 3% TI, and top 15% API. When we were putting this book together DNA hadn’t been transferred from Red Angus to ASA so we didn’t have the actual BOLT numbers to publish. So let’s focus on the amount of substance, broodiness, and muscle that she possesses and how she handles it with a disposition fit for a first time exhibitor.

Last fall we offered a full sister to this female. Big sister sold as lot 32 to the Sullivan family for $3,500. She then went on to be Reserve Calf Champion in San Antonio and recently the Calf Champion at Houston for Cutter Sullivan. Little sister is a result of an embryo purchase in the 2017 Fall Black Label by Garren and Heidi Walrod. I would venture to say the future is way bright with this near perfect profile darling. Sired by the 2017 Ruby Cattle Co high seller, Gentleman’s Jack, and from a female that was selected 9th overall at the 2016 AJSA Summer Classic, comes this great looking, good structured female which breaks into the November class. The Walrod’s do a great job just north of Manhattan, Kansas, and we are happy to have them send this heifer back to the Black Label.

214C is a moderate daughter of Wide Body and the great Annie K 330Y. Albert Sulak wanted to buy our entire set of Fall Bred Heifers in the Spring of 2017, I told him I would only do it on the condition that I could sort two off the top to keep; she is one of those two. I have always loved this donor dam for her moderation, rib shape, pin set and width, her great feet and functional leg. She is one of two females bred like this in existence. Lot 7 is her November born natural calf sired by a Vision son that happens to be a maternal brother to Ethan Wood’s Josie donor. Many have appreciated her and the only thing I can say is, her picture tells more than I can on paper.

Within this sister trio, there’s multiple generations of proven genetics backed with results. 11G was an elite female bred in the Kansas State University program, back when we used to look at them and mate them rather than sitting in front of a computer screen and doing so. She was a program-leading donor prior to and during her tenure at Fenton Farms of Oklahoma. A full sister was the 2016 Calf Champion of the American Royal and then went on to be 3rd Overall Purebred at the 2017 OYE for the Courtney family. This May born stud could be one of the best animals we have bred to date. A short history: we run a set of cows 60+ miles west of Grandview where the cows graze two 600-acre pastures of native grasses. The terrain isn’t as tough as extreme southwest Texas or the panhandle, however they must hustle to maintain and the trek to water is further than most. This calf was born a week after our last rain in May and didn’t get wet till August 9th. During that time of zero moisture, we experienced the second hottest and driest summer on record with average temperatures in the upper 90s, no creep, and not weaned till the first week of December. Short version: if I was a better manager this calf would have been in Denver. Ft. Worth is very similar to the greats that have been campaigned in the percentage division of the Simmental bull battle ground. It’s competitive human nature to say we think he’s one of the very best, but I think his build, movement, and genetic backing propels him in that direction. His sire was the lead bull in a Purebred Champion Pen of 3 for Kearns Cattle Company and went on to be one of the high sellers of that year’s bull sale. His dam would have been 5th overall % female at the 2017 AJSA Summer Classic and the Champion % Female at the TJSSA State Futurity in 2017. Demi 6D should have been exhibited more than she was, but she is still one we get asked about on a National level. Demi no longer exists and we do not have any daughters, but this son of Carver will carry on. 817F is great footed, flexible and clean in his joints, and athletic in motion. He’s good headed, long necked, but balanced in his length of side and hip. His rib is bold and he has more true shape from behind his shoulder to his high and wide pin set. If you want to doubt him or question him, that’s fine, but you owe him the trip to Grandview on April 6 before you pass that kind of judgement.
