Marshall | INSIDER Serendipitous Abstraction: A Show of Abstract Art Featuring works from Massachusetts-artist Debra Corbett, California-artist Joseph Maruska and Utah-artist Jeff Juhlin,The Marshall Gallery of Fine Art will host “Serendipitous Abstraction: a show of abstract art,” opening Thursday, December 5, 7-9 p.m., during Scottsdale’s annual Holiday ArtWalk and running through January 4. All three artists will be at the opening. Abstract art can raise eyebrows, conjure questions and declare perceived truths leaving the viewer excited but possibly searching for the artist’s meaning if any. Abstract art may also provide that perfect statement piece or subtle accent to complete the perfect space. The artists’ media in their featured works range from traditional encaustics to modeling paste with acrylics to oil washes, canvas and panel, all of which engender different emotional responses in the viewer. Joseph Maruska’s unique style of abstraction is based on a lingering intimacy with two major concerns – light & shadow and positive & negative. To tell his stories of life in this abstract manner he uses colors from his heritage and is even known to use punctuation marks for expression and emotion.

“There is life, death, sex, despair and poetry in my work,” explains Maruska. “This ups the ante on pure abstraction. These psychological

December 2013 landscapes host mysteries of their own, hinting at romance and fantasy.” Jeff Juhlin uses the temperamental and ancient medium of bees’ wax to create his works. Having practiced his art around the world, his encaustic paintings are inspired by the arid lands he calls home. “I live in the high desert of the great basin in the west,” Juhlin said. “The contrast between the deep space of the western sky and the large open expanse of the terrain seems to always make its way into the work.” By using the land as his muse, Juhlin is able to strike a balance between his organized style and the natural textures and sheen inherent in the encaustic process. At the same time, Debra Corbett’s works are emotional expressions from nature and travel. Using plaster, paint and glaze media she layers, subtracts and manipulates what’s on her canvas until the finished result gives the viewer a unique surface that has a rich, almost sculptural feel. “My work is all about surface,” says Corbett. “I want there to be some sense of mystery to the painting. I hope the viewer has a true emotional response, lingers awhile and discovers new imagery, meaning and joy when looking at my work.”

December 2013 Abstract art may express the artist’s state of mind or emotions, Monet’s garden - Giverny, France disbelief, a rhetorical question, or an excited inquiry. the artist may yield control of the media or substrate so that the finished work occurs serndipitously. Through bright colors, mottled textures and non-specific subjects, our three artists convey emotions that evoke the desire to ask excitedly if there’s more. December 2013 Born in 1978 in rural New York, Kenneth Peloke is the youngest of four children who were raised by a single mother. He began painting and drawing at the age of seven. When he was nine, they moved to Arizona. Private oil painting lessons and a trip to Sedona inspired him to paint landscapes. He painted landscapes throughout his high school days, during which he entered many juried art competitions with success. Ken felt like he was starting to find himself through his art. While attending a local community college, Ken progressed to figure painting and drawing. But after a few semesters and feeling frustrated with his progress and lack of direction, Ken gave up painting and pursued a seemingly more practical road to an artistic career in Graphic Design. Unfulfilled, with an undefined career path in art, Ken took what ended up being a seven-year hiatus. The desire to pick up a brush again didn’t happen until he heard the news of his first child on the way. He was going to have a daughter and a flood of new emotions filled his heart and mind. Ken began painting abstract ... Click here to continue reading about Kenneth Peloke and see all available paintings on our website. Resurgence | 80 x 66

Marshall | INSIDER Tal Walton

Colorado | Oil Paintings Tal Walton was born in 1965. He attended Brigham Young University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in painting and sculpture. Walton was influenced by his professor, who taught him that a good painting is laid out according to logical symmetry. His work encompasses the use of three part divisions, a component that relates to his Mormon beliefs. The three divisions found in Walton’s painting symbolize “our past, present, and future lives.” The center section of each painting represents the current reality of our lives and is symbolized by relatively strong, clear colors.

December 2013 By contrast, the colors in adjoining sections are darker and more muted. The horizon line and the position of the elements give the painting an ethereal quality. Walton’s paintings are in oil on marble gessoed board, highlighted with gold leaf. He then uses sand paper or scratches to the surface, giving it a sculpted look and applies as many as 20 glazes to each piece. Every painting is bordered in black with a gold gilded hand carved frame which Walton feels is an important part of the finished work. His technique has contributed greatly to Walton’s unique style and great success. Click here to see all available works by Tal Walton on our website
