THE LEPRECHAUN TAYA RACZAK With St. Patrick’s Day coming up we hear a lot about old myths. One of the classic myths that we learned in Pre-K was the leprechaun. We were told that they were at the end of a rainbow with a big pot of gold. They would come into our classroom while we were away and leave footprints; however, I’m sure very few of us know much else about the leprechaun. The original Irish name for these figures is “Lobaircin”, meaning small-bodied fellow. This happened to be quite fitting. In Irish mythology a leprechaun is a type of male faerie said to inhabit the island of Ireland. They are a class of “Faerie Folk” associated in Irish mythology and folklore, as with most other faerie creatures.
ill-natured and mischievous. Although they are rarely seen in social situations, it is believed that they are very well spoken and are great in the art of conversation. One of the most popular beliefs about them is that they are extremely wealthy and like to hide their wealth in secret locations. The only way that these locations could be found is if a person actually captured and interrogated one for its money. Another popular belief is that you can find a leprechaun at the end of a rainbow, sitting with his pot of gold. This is one of the more familiar beliefs. It is believed that leprechauns don’t like humans. They are seen as foolish and greedy creatures, and this is why humans never see them. They tend to avoid humans due to fear. It is believed that leprechauns fear humans because of their greed. They fear that humans would torture them for their wealth, which is believed to have happened in the past.
Leprechauns are said to take the form of old men and enjoy partaking in mischief. Their trade is that of a shoemaker, or a cobbler. They are also said to be very rich, having many treasures buried during war time. According to the Irish legend, anyone who keeps an eye fixed upon one, he cannot In conclusion, most of the tales we heard in school escape. In most tales the leprechauns are harmless, enjoy solitude, and live in remote locations. In other stories they are depicted as 6

4 OF THE BEST WORST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE TYLER GAMBLIN I remember one of the most exciting times in my life was moving from the drab middle school into the exciting new world of high school. I had all these ideas of how awesome and great high school would be, and it was sometimes, but my idea of high school has drastically changed in past four years. When I entered high school I was the underdog. A mere freshman subjected to snide comments about my class placement and the countless times I was shoved out of the lunch line because of “seniority. Coming into high school does not make your life suddenly more glamorous than before, at least not in my case. Some people flourish in high school, some just live day by day. I was the latter of course. I spent my days minding my own business and discovering my own interests as I jumped head first into extracurricular activities. As the years went on I began to become more comfortable with branching out and becoming more involved in what this school has to offer, but also as the years went on, the thrill of high school 10
slowly started to fade. Days ran seamlessly into each other and seemed endless. Weekends were hardly enough time to recuperate from the long week. I found ways to do my work without doing too much work, which often time included finding worksheet answer keys online. It was not all bad though, I have had some unforgettable times in this school; the crazy shenanigans with my friends and being a part of a school that can overcome so many odds when it comes to football. I met so many upperclassmen that I would slowly have to say good bye to one year at a time and I watched them walk across that stage thinking to myself how lucky they were. I remember thinking about how far away that would be, but this year is my year. May 19th is approaching faster than I ever thought it would. While I am grateful for the wonderful teachers who spent hours teaching me math or reading over my atrocious essays, what I will remember 20 years from now is not the quadratic formula or the oxford comma, but the lessons that did not have an answer key.

Will I ever remember all the states’ capitols? Not a chance, but my history teacher lived an unjudging life which was impressionable to a young sophomore. Through his actions I saw how to treat others with kindness and fairness. I will never remember how to factor trinomials but I will not forget all the jokes shared between me and my math teacher. While in the moment it is so easy to focus on all the bad high school has to offer. The immature students, the pointless “drama,” and the failed tests, but I will never regret high school. When someone says, “High school is the best four years,” they are not right, but they are not exactly wrong either. It is a transition period that helps you grow from a young cub into a strong wolf. Everybody has their own opinions on high school, but I know one thing for sure that I can say for all of us and that is: that once we walk across that stage on graduation day, no matter how much you say you hated high school, you’re going to miss it. One way or another, you are going to miss it. Whether it be the memories, the people, the classes you had, the teachers, or just being a kid, or even being in that certain 11
environment that made you hate everybody at times, but also made you realize that these are the days to cherish with everything you have, because one day you’ll be a scared little freshman and then the next you’ll be walking across a stage and grabbing your high school diploma leaving all of those precious memories behind. I know there are some people who hate high school but once it’s gone, you will miss it one way or another. So if you think that nothing you do in high school matters, you couldn’t be more wrong. If nothing what you did mattered, it would be before your high school years, from an educational point of view. But in life, everything you do matters one way or another. Whether that is in the long run or maybe it will matter tomorrow. But think about what you say and do because once it’s said and done, there’s no taking anything back. Everything you do has an impact on somebody even if it’s not you, so think before you speak and think before you do. Because this is only the beginning.

GOODBYE HIGH SCHOOL ABBY WILLIAMS For the most part, the senior class is split into two groups; the ones who absolutely cannot wait to graduate and get out of high school, and they ones who don’t want to leave and are dreading graduation. No matter which side you are on, graduation will be here before you know it and it’s all a bit bittersweet. I took the time to sit down and make a list of all the sad parts and the exciting parts of graduation and leaving high school. • Saying Goodbye. Whether it be your favorite teacher, girlfriend/boyfriend, or just friends, saying goodbye to all the people you’ve been around for so many years is sad and scary. Some of the people you have known since kindergarten, you may never see again at all.
morning and make sure you go to class and get good grades. You also probably have teachers that are always there when you need them and help you out a lot with adjusting deadlines and always reminding you of when assignments are due and when tests are. However, things will definitely change in college. Your parents are not going to be around to keep you on your feet and your professors are not going to constantly be nagging about assignments and exams. It’s time for us to be responsible and that’s just part of leaving high school. • Boundaries. More on the exciting list of things to say goodbye to is boundaries. Leaving high school and going into the real word or the college world is going to give us so much freedom compared to high school. It’s an exciting time to explore new things and grow into adulthood and really start to figure out who we really are.
• Being at the top. We’ve all gotten used to being “seniors”, the oldest students around. We can often get our way and do things we want because we can pull the “senior card”. However, if you’re planning on attending any sort of college, you’re going to go back to being a freshman all over again. You will no longer Obviously, there are a lot of ups and downs of leaving be the oldest and wisest student on campus. However, I feel that it is important to always remember your high school days and never forget where you came from. • Familiarity. Everything around you is familiar. line from Snow White. “Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all,” as it is remembered, but if you watch the original movie, it actually says, “Magic mirror on the wall.” The Mandela Effect is so widely believed because it’s not a few people who are having these false memories, but a mass number of people. “Mirror, mirror on the wall,” is featured on different types of merchandise and quotes. It is hard to say that we have been getting this quote wrong since 1938 unless something happened to the timeline of events. One common theory for the Mandela Effect is the idea our universe passing in and out of another one. This only changes small events that can almost go unnoticed or can be excused as a false memory.
