Albums in may Well it is about that time of year where we start go on long vacations or long car rides. What better way to waste time during a long car ride than listening to a brand new album. Either have the new songs blaring through the speakers of the car if you are driving or blaring through the ear buds if you do not have control of the stereo in the car. Depending on the type of music you listen to, there might be some new releases coming out of your type of genre of music. If there is not an album coming out from one of the bands you know, then maybe spend a couple of dollars and listen to somebody new. You never know that band you have never listen to before, might just become your new favorite band. Ok well here some new album releases that are coming out sometime during the month of May.

Well there are a couple of albums from great bands that are being released to stores sometime during the month of May. May has some very popular bands coming out with a new album, but there are also some less known bands that is still good music to listen to. If you are going on vacation this summer, I would strongly consider getting one of these albums so you are not listening to the same old radio.

Artsfest What is art? Well, obviously, it’s an expression that shows someone’s creative skills. Music, dance, and visual art are types of art. I will be focusing on visual art, or fine art, throughout this article. If objects, drawings, or pictures are placed intentionally to create a pattern, symbolize a thought, or tell a story, I would consider that a work of art. What is art to you? Is it splattering paint randomly on a canvas, or is it placing the paint strategically to send a message? Is it a doodle on your math homework or a masterpiece that you spent weeks on? Is it just an activity on a rainy day or is it a lifetime of dedication? Go to the 33rd Annual Artsfest to discover or perhaps rediscover what art means to you.

mances. Artsfest is the perfect festival for a family outing, featuring hands-on activities provided for children.

If you are interested in art, enjoy going to festivals and similar outings, are an artist yourself, or have nothing better to do, join me at the Artsfest this May. There is guaranteed fun activities, incredible art, food from the best restaurants in Missouri, and enjoyment for the entire family. I hope to see everyone there!

The “Art is…” Artsfest 2013 will be a wonderful event, during which, artists from all over Missouri show the world what they think art is. Artsfest will be located on Historic Walnut Street in Springfield, Missouri. On May 4th (10 am – 6 pm) and 5th (10 am – 5 pm), you will have the opportunity to browse and buy art of every style. With over 140 artists contributing to this festival, I can assure you’ll find at least one piece you’ll enjoy. As the largest fine art festivals in Missouri, Artsfest usually attracts over 20,000 people. Every year, people gather to shop for original art, sample food from restaurants, and enjoy a variety of perfor-

Clubs we should have Have you ever been to another school, looked up to see the posters for the athletic teams and clubs and thought to yourself, “Why don’t we have that at our school”? When I see the posters and signs for the diving and swimming teams or even the Future Farmers of America (FFA) clubs at other schools, it makes me wish that we had more opportunities to join extra-curricular clubs here at school. Sure we have the basics like FCCLA, NHS, and StuCo, but there’s nothing awesome or out of the ordinary about those clubs. They do great work and are important to have, but don’t you think it would be great to have some really interesting clubs here? Here are a few of my ideas for some clubs or activities that we should have at our school. We live in the Midwest, which is like the farming capital of America, so why don’t we have an FFA club? We are one of the few schools in Missouri who don’t offer this organization for our students to join. Future Farmers of America is an

organization that helps students recognize their future plans and decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives. They get students on the right track for a prosperous future. However, you can’t forget that one of those F’s stands for farmers, so there is an aspect of agriculture that you can’t ignore if you want to join. FFA promotes healthy lifestyles using agriculture education and global environment information. The organization encourages teens to build better character through the use of team work, cooperation, and patriotism. We have

many students in our district that could benefit from the chance to learn more about agriculture. We live in an area where farming is still a large part of many students’ lives. Plus, there are other lessons that students can learn from FFA, not just about agriculture. A lot of schools across the country have an

American Sign Language (ASL) club for their students. ASL clubs teach students sign language without actually offering a class that students have to take. It gives students an opportunity to learn something that could come in handy later in life. Knowing sign language gives kids an extra skill that could give them an upper hand for certain jobs. It’s an interesting way to socialize, it gives kids a chance to make contacts in the deaf community, and it raises awareness for deaf students in their area. To have a sign language club at our school would be a large asset to students by providing them with a new opportunity and a chance to learn something they might need later in life. Some schools have started photography clubs to give students a chance to develop their skill in picture taking and Photoshop. Often times, these students are involved in the school magazine or newspaper, but some

are members just to learn more about photography and prepare for their futures. You could argue that many schools don’t have photography groups due to the cuts in arts programs in schools across the nation, but some might say it’s due to lack of interest. Photography isn’t one of the most popular careers in the country, but for students who do have jobs on the newspaper or magazine, even yearbook, they need a chance to fine tune their skills. If our school had a photography club, students who work in our media department could learn the basics and share their photos without having the added work of another class. One school in Texas even has a Crimestoppers club. Sounds pretty cheesy, right? Actually their club gets to work with the police department on actual crimes in their area, so it’s not as odd as it sounds. They also support the student body by deterring unwanted behavior and support the community through fundraising. It’s very similar to the D.A.R.E program we have here, but these students don’t just focus on stopping alcohol and drugs, they have tried to completely stop crimes in the school district and use money they raise to stop all unpleasant behavior in the community. This club could benefit our school by creating a friendlier environment for students. The students not just in our building, but in our district might be a little more cautious about their behavior if they knew there were people on the lookout and there were programs designed to help them stay out of trouble. Another popular club in many schools is the Key Club. The Key Club is very similar to the National Honor Society, but is more focused on doing service projects that will help shape students’ and communities’ futures rather than just volunteering. The projects that the Key Club participates in are more for

the future and students’ leadership in the rest of their lives. They are sponsored by Kiwanis International and partner with March of Dimes. UNICEF, and Children’s

Miracle Network. All of the service provided to other children by Key Club members is directed to a single area of need so that it makes a larger impact. The current service project is called The Eliminate Project which allows Key Club Members to work with UNICEF tetanus among mothers and new-

9

borns. Again, the club is very similar to NHS, but it brings the students together to team up with one another and large organizations to put all effort into one major service project. If we had a Key Club here at our high school, students could come together to do one huge service project that would make a huge difference the lives of people in our community and would give students a chance to get involved and do something bigger than we have done before. These are just a few of the clubs I think that our school should start or get involved in. Whether you are a student who enjoys taking pictures, volunteering or just wants to learn a new skill, any of these clubs would be enjoyable for you. Sure we’ve got a lot of activities, clubs, and organizations that students can get involved in, but some of them aren’t for everyone. If we opened up some new opportunities for students, we would have more involvement and get people more excited about extra-curricular activities.

is summer school worth it? Does anyone remember when summer school was the “cool thing to do” after the school year ended? Back in the day, we got to take cool classes, play games, and avoid hours of endless boredom spent at home. Now, it might not be the cool thing to do considering all the classes offered are high school credited classes, but it just might be the cure to your senioritis. This might sound crazy, but summer school does, in fact, have its perks! Summer school takes place from the first week of June until that last week in June. The duration of summer school is 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Six and a half hours a day and four days a week, with lunch included, at summer school may sound like a lame way to spend part of your summer, but what would you say if you knew giving up that little piece of summer every year could potentially get you out of high school faster? That’s right ladies and gentlemen; getting easy credits out of the way over the summer can open up the opportunity to graduate as a junior! I am sure you are all wondering one of two things. One, how is this possible or two, why didn’t you know about this sooner, right? The answers to both of those questions are super easy. Being able to graduate at the end of your junior year is made possible by getting the credits offered during the summer out of the way which then allows you to have more space in your schedule during the school year to knock out classes that are still required to graduate but not offered during summer school. By keeping track of your credits, taking school seriously, avoiding so called “blow-off classes”, and attending summer school the possibility of eliminating another year in high school is made possible. By going to the counselors for help planning and organizing a floor plan, having a good mind-set, and willing to spend a little extra time of your summer in school you could very well be on your way to saying “adios” to Reeds Spring School District a year early. Juniors, sorry to say, but it is probably just a little too late to knock those extra hours out of the way to leave after this year. Freshmen and sophomores, it might be a little late for you guys too, but if any-

thing, you could knock some of the credits out of your way and possibly have the opportunity to graduate after completion of your first semester of your senior year. Graduating early can open up all kinds of new doors for opportunities. You could start college early, work a full or parttime job to save money, or begin any of your future plans ahead of your original schedule. On top of the opened opportunities, a sense of accomplishment would follow. Knowing that you applied yourself in and out of the scheduled school year, stayed on top of your work and grades, and putting in just that little bit of extra time to receive so much time in return could be one of the biggest accomplishments of your high school career that only you could achieve by yourself with help and support from family, friends, and others. The decision to graduate early isn’t for everyone. In fact, many are encouraged to stay in school. However, if the chance arises for a student, they should consider their options wisely. Weigh out the pros and cons and layout the options if they did decide to graduate after junior year or after first semester of senior year and likewise if they decided not to graduate early. Maybe graduating early isn’t an option or doesn’t seem too appealing; summer school can still come in handy when it comes to taking those courses offered to eliminate those credits off of your gradu-

ation requirements list. But if you’re not graduating early, then what would the perks of summer school be? With seven hours on a schedule, there is limited space for you to take your desired classes with your required classes. By attending summer school for those few short weeks, you could clear some space in your school schedule in the fall for any fun classes, said “blow-off” classes, or a variety other electives offered at the high school you so desire to take. In the end, summer school is an opportunity offered by Reeds Spring School District that not all other school districts offer to their students. Some of the classes that are offered for credit are gym, health, personal finance, and journalism. Yes, it takes time out of your summer to take these classes. Yes, it is considered to be uncool or lame by the majority of the student body. But when it all boils down, you have to ask yourself, would it be worth it in the end?

sports spread Reeds Spring football has not always been the best sport for our school. After many losing seasons, fans were starting to wonder when the time would come when Reeds Spring would turn their football program around. But in 2013, the players decided it was time to make a difference in Reeds Spring football. 2013 was the first year in over 10 years the Wolves had their first winning season. With an impressive 7-4 record, the wolves knocked down teams like the former state champs, the Logan Rogersville Wild Cats. This has turned the program around and kick started a new era of Reeds Spring football. A person that was one of the main parts of the football team this year was Easton Flaugh. Easton had started as the Quarter back for varsity his Sophomore year. He would have been able to start on defense to, if it wasn’t for Coach Moler who was afraid of the possibility of Flaugh getting injured on defense. But in 2013 Flaugh started at inside linebacker and became one of the top linebackers in the state. He recorded close to eighty tackles and got second team all-state honors. Flaugh looks forward to his senior year both as quarterback and linebacker. The girls this year might not have fully accomplished the goals they set but they did accomplish some great ones throughout the course of the season. The girls have a great year as they won a few tournaments but took a hard lost when Hannah Gertson fell to a season ending knee injury towards the end of the year. When it came to post season were able to win the district title. When the girls came back home for the next round they unfortunately lost to a very good pleasant hill team who ended state runner ups.

Hard work and dedication can define the wrestling team the last couple years and you can see that with the top ten finishes the last four years at the state tournament. The wrestling team was a very young team as well, but that did not stop them from doing well in their tournaments and duals. They won a few tournaments and over three fourths of their duals. The team had three state medalists which included two of those three in the championship match. Only one got the gold, but Reeds has never had two in the championship before this year. The one thing every wrestler chases and dreams about is a state championship and that’s exactly what Zach accomplished, becoming the second athlete in Reeds Spring history to win a state title. Zach finishes his junior year with an incredible 40-2 record and was able to get noticed by Ouachita Baptist College in Arkansas who Zach has verbally committed to. Next year pans to be no different for Zach as he sets out to chase his second title and become the first in school history to win multiple gold medals at the state level.

The Reeds Spring Cross Country team had an above average 20122013 season. Joey Ash and Tony Miceli received All Conference honors for the season and they both also received All District awards. Since Joey Ash and Tony Miceli got All District they got to go to state for cross country. They were quite a few runners who received All Area honors. Those runners were: Matthew Tucker, Johnathon Locke, Tony Miceli, Joey Ash, and Nikki Warren. Coach Locke is very excited for next year because his two state runners are only sophomores. The Reeds Spring boys’ basketball team did some very good things during the 2012-2013 season. The team won the Spokane tournament this year. It was the first tournament championship Reeds Spring has won for basketball since 1999. In the Blue and Gold tournament they beat a state ranked Clever team in a thriller. Austin Selby has received a scholarship to play basketball at College of the Ozarks. They won their first game of districts against Aurora. Their season ended with a lost in the second round of districts to the eventual state champions Republic. A girl that tall has to be too clumsy for basketball or at least to be good but that’s not quite the circumstance for Megan Rasmussen. Yes she was clumsy on the court as she grew up but she quickly grew out of that and now is getting offers from many schools including a full ride to Scared Heart University who is a division one school in Connecticut. Megan has not officially committed to a school and is keeping her options open. The Wolves golf team is an impressive team with lots of talent. After a solid season last spring in two thousand twelve, the wolves are excited to return to the course. The Wolves will be a part of several great tournaments at very challenging courses. The wolves will face good competition, but with young guys that are returning this year coach Mueller is excited how his team is going to do this year. You can also check out the Wolves golf team in action when they host their very own tournament at the Stonebridge course. This year the tennis team made huge improvements from last year. In addition to some new comers, the team was under the instruction of a new coach, Coach Jones. The team spent their season building skills by working on the fundamentals of tennis, improving strategies, and, of course, working on the perfect swing. The hard work is definitely paying off. Other schools are recognizing and commenting on the competitiveness of the team. The team even won four matches, which is a solid season.

13

The Reeds Spring baseball team had a very successful season during 2011-2012. Their record was only thirteen and eleven, but their season was much more than just a winning record. We started off the season with kind of a sluggish start. Then in the middle of season we started to heat up a little bit. On May 8th, the baseball and the school lost a dear friend, Mason Weitzel, that touched all of our hearts. That is when the baseball team got hot and made it all the way to second district championship in school history. We lost in the 12th inning of the baseball game. Johnathon Locke is a 13 year senior and there is a really good chance that you even know his dad, Mr. Locke the art teacher. Johathon’s Dad played double A baseball for two seasons. With hard work and good genes, Johnathon has been offered scholarships for baseball to various universities or colleges. The right handed pitcher or first basemen for the wolves is focused playing baseball for College of the Ozarks. Last year, he received All COC honors along with All District honors for the baseball team. This year he plans to do even better on the diamond and help his team to reach their team goals. The Reeds Spring Softball Team has always been a high point in Reeds Spring Sports. Every year the lady wolves are constantly contending for a state championship. This year wasn’t any different with many close games and fantastic wins. This year with the wolves finished an overall record of 15 and 14. With a lot of young players returning next year and only losing a few players, the lady wolves softball team is set up for another exciting and great year of Reeds Spring Wolves softball. One of the seniors that will be graduating this year, and contributed to the Wolves softball team mightily was catcher Marley Harmon. After graduation she will be playing at western Kentucky University. She is excited about the new challenges that are in front of her. She also looks forward to all the 6 a.m. workouts. Marley expects that she will play either catcher or in the outfield. “I believe that my four years at Reeds Spring were the best years of my life, but I am even more excited about continuing my career at Western Kentucky.” Says Marley. When it came to Track last year, Reeds Spring definitely didn’t hold back. Our COC Track Individual Champions were Dylan Weber (110m Hurdles), Aaron Allphin (High Jump), Cameron Dickens (Shut Put; he also set COC record), and the Girls 4x400m Relay Team consisting of Cheyene Randle, Sam Akromis, Rebecca Meats, and Daniel Curnes. The State Qualifiers were Weber (110m Hurdles), Allphin (High Jump and Triple Jump; he finished 7th overall in HJ, which earned him a medal), and the aforementioned Girls 4x400m Relay Team. As far as school records go David McCall holds the record in Pole Vault; Curnes, Meats, Akromis, and Randle in Girls 4x400m Relay, and Allphin in Triple Jump. Allphin also tied the record in High Jump. Senior Track shot put star Cameron Dickens has not only set records but his achievements have been noticed by multiple colleges across the United States. He has been offered scholarships from here in Missouri, all the way to Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, and most of the states that surround Missouri and make up the Midwest. Though he is unsure about which school he is going to take up on their offer, his talent remains evident. Wherever he goes it is obvious that he will succeed and we all wish this track star good luck in his future endeavors!

A simple trip to the lake can be all it takes to clear our heads and open our minds; I’m just here to help you do it in the best dressed way possible. I’m sure all everyone has pulled out their bikinis, tanks, and summer dresses in honor of the warmer weather. the better choice Being healthy; it’s a new year’s resolution, a goal, a lifestyle, an accomplishment, etc. However for some, it’s just a thought in the back of their mind. We all know how difficult it is to be healthy. I mean let’s be honest; we are tempted by so much fattening food in today’s world. We have McDonald’s, Sonic, Arby’s, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, and the list could go on and on. Sure, these places have semi healthy choices for us to choose from, but no one goes to McDonalds for their salads. With that being said, it’s just as hard to eat healthy at home. So, to help make eating healthier more appealing, here’s a few healthy snacks! For those who want something salty: • 5 olives (any kind) (45 calories) • 1 small Martin’s pretzel (50 calories) • 1/4 cup hummus, 3 carrot sticks (80 calories) • 1 Laughing Cow Light Swiss Original wedge, 3 pieces Kavli Crispy Thin (85 calories) • One 1-oz package tuna jerky (90 calories) • 1 oz buffalo mozzarella, 1/2 cup cherry or grape tomatoes (94 calories) • 15 Eden’s Nori Maki Crackers rice crackers (110 calories) • 50 Eden’s Vegetable Chips (130 calories) • One 1-oz package of Planters NUTtrition almonds (130 calories) • 1/4 cup Trader Joe’s Chili con Queso, 18 baked tortilla chips (140 calories) • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds in shell (143 calories) • 1 Subway Turkey Breast Wrap (190 calories) And for those of you with a sweet tooth: • 1 package Original Apple Nature Valley Fruit Crisps (50 calories) • 1 packet O’Coco’s Mocha cookies (90 calories) • 1 Jelly Belly 100-calorie pack (100 calories) • One 100-calorie pack Trader Joe’s Chocolate Graham Toucan Cookies (100 calories) • One 100-calorie Balance Bar (100 calories) • 1 package Back to Nature Honey

Graham Sticks (120 calories) • 1/2 banana rolled in 1 tbsp frozen semisweet chocolate chips (123 calories) • 2 tbsp Better ‘n Peanut Butter, 4 stalks celery (124 calories) • 1 bag Orville Redenbacher’s Smart Pop Butter Mini Bags topped with a spritz of butter spray and 1 tsp sugar (126 calories) • 24 Annie’s Chocolate Chip Bunny Graham cookies (140 calories) • 1 container Fage Greek Total 2% fat yogurt, 2 tsp honey (173 calories) Now that you have some snacks that aren’t so high in calories, let’s take a look at some tips about eating healthy! Because even if whatever you’re eating isn’t high in calories, there’s still a chance it’s not all that good for you. So, here are some things to keep in mind! • Just because something is “all natural” or “pure” doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s nutritious. For example, “all natural” juice drinks or sodas can be filled with sugar (which is, after all, a natural ingredient) but all that sugar means they’ll be high in calories and give you little nutrition. • A granola bar is a good example of a snack that seems healthy. Although granola bars can be a good source of certain vitamins and nutrients, many also contain a great deal of fat, including a particularly harmful type of fat called trans-fat. And there can be a lot of sugar in granola cereals and bars. Check the Nutrition Facts label on the package to be sure. • Be skeptical of low-fat food claims, too. If the fat has been eliminated or cut back, the amount of sugar in the food might have increased to keep that food tasting good. Many low-fat foods have nearly as many calories as their full-fat versions. • Prepare healthy snacks in advance. • Keep healthy snacks with you. • Make it interesting. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be as boring as most people make it out to be. Switch up your snacks, try something new. • Satisfy cravings with healthier approaches. • Read serving size information. Now with these tips in mind, hopefully you’ll be able to make healthier decisions. So far we’ve covered some healthy

17

Kerrigan arnold snacks, healthy tips, and now we’re going to go over some healthy alternatives when going out to eat! For breakfast: • Order pancakes, French toast, muffins, toast, cereal, fruit, juices. These are all higher in carbohydrate and lower in fat than traditional egg and bacon breakfasts. • Request that toast, pancakes, etc. be served without butter or margarine. Use syrup or jam to keep carbohydrate high and fat to a minimum. • Choose low-fat dairy products (skim or 1% milk, low-fat yogurt, low-fat cheese, etc.) For lunch: • On sandwiches, look for lower fat meats, such as turkey and chicken. Remember that most of the fat in sandwiches is found in the spread. Prepare or order without the “mayo,” “special sauce,” or butter. Use ketchup or mustard instead. • Choose foods that are broiled, baked, microwaved, steamed, or boiled rather than fried, and try to avoid breaded items. Salad bars can be lifesavers, but watch the dressing, olives, fried croutons, nuts, and seeds...you could end up with more fat than any super-burger could hope to hold! • Baked potatoes should be ordered with butter and sauces “on the side.” Add just enough to moisten the carbohydraterich potato. • Soups and crackers can be good low-fat meals; stay away from cream soups. • Juices, low-fat milk, and low-fat milk shakes are a more nutritious choice than soda pop. For dinner: • Eat thick crust pizzas with low-fat toppings such as green peppers, mushrooms, Canadian bacon, and onions. Avoid fatty meats such as pepperoni or sausage, extra cheese, and olives. • Eat breads without butter or margarine...use jelly instead. Ask for salads with dressing “on the side” so that you can add minimal amounts yourself. Ask for low-fat salad dressings. Well, that’s the best advice that I, along with Google, can give you! Hopefully you’ll remember all these fun, little tips! Remember, summer is coming up! Who knows, these might come in handy!

hope is vital When we think about H.I.V. or A.I.D.S., most of us relate immediately to a stigma created though years of not knowing anything about the virus or the disease. For America, they were years of ignorance, in which the development of the stigma surrounding A.I.D.S. and H.I.V. began to grow and thrive. Today, there are a few people that have the guts to stand up and speak out against the stigma, and most of them have been fighting it for most of their lives. One such person, Brryan Jackson, has spent his life doing just that. After being diagnosed with A.I.D.S. at the age of five years old, the doctors didn’t give him long to live. In fact, they couldn’t figure out how he had even contracted H.I.V. until one day when his father was brought up. Brryan’s father, who was working as a phlebotomist—a person who is trained to draw blood, either for donation or testing—had slipped into Brryan’s hospital room when he was only 11 months old. Though Brryan was in the hospital for asthma, it made no difference to his father. In fact, the man tried to deny that he was Brryan’s father, despite paternity tests. With him, he carried a vial of H.I.V. positive blood, which he then injected into his son. Why would anyone—a father especially—ever do that to a helpless child? The answer to this question is both simple and disturbing; while Brryan was in the hospital at such a young age, his parents were in the process of a divorce, and his father wanted to avoid paying child support. Think about it; in an effort to avoid paying child support, Brryan’s father tried to kill him. Despite all of the trials that Brryan has faced through his life, he managed to pull through and survive. This is why Brryan formed his non-for-profit organization, Hope Is Vital. It is no coincidence that the acronym for his organization is HIV. Brryan created the organization to spread

awareness about HIV and AIDS. On the Hope Is Vital website, http://www.hopeisvital.org/, Brryan has laid down the main goals and guidelines of the organization. 1. “Offer hope and inspire others to overcome adversity and be empowered to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.” 2. “Promote education on HIV/AIDS in order to prevent the spread of HIV, disband myths and reduce negative stigma related to being HIV positive.” 3. “Brryan Jackson tells his personal story of how being injected with HIV by his father has impacted his life.” 4. “Encourage others to make affirmative healthy decisions to reduce the spread of HIV.” 5. “It is not what you can get out of life but what you can give. To GOD be the Glory.”

Though the goals of his organization may seem simple and straightforward, they are anything but that. Furthering America’s AIDS education is something that has been a long and slow process. For this reason, Brryan works to spread the word. Without understanding the debilitating disease, how can we hope to prevent it? The first step to understanding how to prevent HIV and AIDS is understanding what the victims have had to go through upon contracting the disease. Though Brryan speaks at a vast variety of different events across Missouri and the country, he can’t tell everyone. Through local AIDS organizations such as APO (AIDS Project of the Ozarks), high school students across the state and country are learning more about HIV and AIDS prevention. Despite this, AIDS is still one of the top ten

18

Glenna Dement

causes of death among people ages 15 to 44. Not everyone has been reached by Brryan’s words and the work of organizations like APO, however. The more people that we can spread the word to, the lower the numbers of victims of HIV and AIDS will get. That is where understanding the diseases comes into play. After all, how can you spread the word, destroy the stigma, and help save lives when you don’t truly understand what HIV and AIDS are capable of doing to people? By definition, HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is the disease that causes AIDS. Usually, people don’t show symptoms. If and when they show symptoms, it can take up to 10 years for those symptoms to appear, and by then, the HIV can progress and worsen, causing AIDS. It’s common knowledge that AIDS stands for Acquire Immunodeficiency Syndrome, but what does that mean? AIDS is an incapacitating illness in which the virus destroys your CD4 helper lymphocyte, without which your body cannot effectively fight off infections, essentially attacking the immune system and your body’s ability to recuperate. Despite this, people can still push through and live relatively regular lives if they receive treatment and get on medication. Unfortunately, however, 40 percent of people with HIV and AIDS don’t know they have it. Many don’t know until they become so ill that the damage done to their immune system and body are nearly irreversible. This is just basic information about HIV and AIDS, but you can visit websites such as http://www.hopeisvital.org/,http:// www.aidsprojectoftheozarks.org/, and http://aids.gov/ for more information and to help spread the word. Remember; Every 60 seconds, five people are infected with HIV. Every person that knows how to prevent the infection could be another life saved. Spread the word!

the pros and cons Arguably, one of the biggest changes of this year has been the integration of technology. We at the Pulse are concerned about what the students of Reeds Spring think about the new computers. Gage Becker is probably one of the most anti-technologic students we have; with what he claims is his “old soul,” Gage lives with the knowledge he doesn’t need technology to survive. “I think that people today are so consumed with technology that if something happened and there was no technology, they wouldn’t be able to survive.” It is true that we have lost some of our old selves with the new technology. When was the last time you wrote with a pencil? Gage’s biggest complaint about the computers is, he is being forced to use them. “I hate how we’re being forced. You should have the option to handwrite stuff, I enjoy writing and I think we’re losing that. I am very concerned with good penmanship and it is something I practiced. I guess it is the old soul in me. I have a phone and TV and all that stuff, but I don’t need it to survive. I don’t think you HAVE to have it like people think.” Gage, like a few other students, has trouble getting his computer to work at home. One time, he

even had to drive twenty minutes to the school’s parking lot to be able to turn a paper in on time. Many other students are having trouble with turning in their assignments on time due to technical difficulties.

Another problem with the computers is the increased opportunities to

While it is okay to get on Pintrest, YouTube, and listen to music when you have the teacher’s permission or for an assignment, many students are getting on sites they shouldn’t while the teacher is trying to teach. While there are a few cons to the situation, there are many pros as well. Even Gage admits that it is nice to be able to have something readily available to look things up. Steven McAndrews likes the computers and thinks they are very helpful. What he likes most about the computers is the ability to listen to music while he workswith the teacher’s permission of course. Like many other people, music helps him work better. He also likes the way we are able to turn our assignments in over Gaggle, “sometimes instead of the assignment being due right as you walk in the room, some teachers allow you to turn things

In addition Bailey Sullivan says, “I think once the hoopla of the computers dies down, the computers will become more effective. With more and more jobs turning to computers, it has become even more necessary to familiarize yourself with computers. Our computers allow us to become familiarized with different programs on our computers, the problems that can occur, and how to fix them by ourselves. For Stephen, who is going into account-

manteresting

Let’s Hear it For the Boys: Manteresting Honestly the majority of my free time in class is taken up by pinning cute clothes on Pinterest, men don’t really have this luxury because they get hives when they start seeing their girlfriends pinning wedding dresses. Now there’s a website known as MANteresting and instead of pinning you get to nail. Pinterest was launched back in March of 2010 and now is the third-largest social network after Facebook and Twitter. Manteresting was created with the same idea behind it, just without all the wedding dresses and eye-makeup tips. Men believe everything on Pinterest has an alternative motive behind it…to go shopping. What do guys hate most? Shopping. Guys aren’t able to just get on Pinterest and begin pinning happily, everything is way too difficult to find that applies to men. For every ten make up tips, there is a sports car that follows. Okay, so I just made that up…but it’s true. When they go to Manteresting everything they want is right on the homepage. The background is a charcoal grey color, rather than the red and white colors on the other site. Ab-

marrissa peebles

solutely nothing is complicated about this website. Girls are welcome to the site, and some even enjoy it, just like some men enjoy Pinterest. Statistics show there are on 20% women on the Manteresting site and about the same goes for men on Pinterest. Manteresting IS the man cave of the internet. What exactly can you do with your Manterest account? • Nail instead of pin. • “Bump” things, which is the equivalent of liking. Fist bump, men. • Corkboards are replaced with workbenches. • See pictures of women rather than pictures of guys with abs…sorry.v • Millions of cars from mudding to James Bond style. • Men don’t show off nail art, they show off assault rifles. • Read jokes that only your fellow male species will understand. Really, I didn’t get the humor in half of the jokes. • Instead of those huge, fancy mansions you can fantasize about living in an adult tree house. • There are thousands of pictures of just

22

BACON. Yes, I put that in caps to get your attention again. • You can start figuring out which weapons you need for a zombie apocalypse. • New Chuck Norris jokes…okay probably not new but you can refresh your memory. • Their social networking aspect promises to help you “be more awesome at life”. • Instead of pinning a wedding dress, nail Angelina Jolie. • Sick of salads? You’ll see food like burgers wrapped in bacon. • DIY: Learn how to make a spoon into an arrowhead. • There are still fancy outfits. Just a guy’s idea of a fancy outfit complete with cuff links. • Some pictures are self-inspiring…like the pizza rolls picture that says “You are all beautiful on the inside.” • No more cat jokes, you get to see more of man’s best friend. • Everything is there and not sugar coated. • Home décor? A kitchen island made from Legos. Have fun nailing and bumping, boys.

diy summer Just the mention of the word sends our hearts a thrill of excitement. You’re right; I’m talking about summer, the time where we make most of our best memories! It’s the time when we aren’t worrying about any upcoming tests, loads of homework, or waking up at the crack of dawn. Summer is when we get so stay up all night with no consequence of school, get sun-kissed by the sun, go to the lake, hang out with friends whenever we’re off work, and just enjoy life. However, there is one slight downfall of summer and it would be the new and expensive items that make their summer premiere. Yes, most of us have a job in the summer, but we also have other expenses we have to take care of first. So once we take that all out of our check, we don’t have all that much left, but even if we do, the money left over is like butter in our hands. So, with that being said, why not save some money by making things yourself! When it could only take a few minutes out of your day, why not? You save money, doesn’t take too much time, and you get to show your artistic side! However if that doesn’t convince you enough, here are some ideas that might! We all know that when we go to the pool, what we wear isn’t our number one priority. I mean, we’ll either be catching some rays, or doing a cannon ball into the pool. So when it comes to what we wear there, we just know we want to wear something light and that doesn’t attract too much heat because we’ll be changing out of it anyway. Well, this DIY is perfect for just something breezy to throw on while going to the pool, or even if accessorized the right way, could be worn on a night out on the town! And all you need is either an X or XL t-shirt and a pair of scissors! Here’s what steps you need to follow in order to get your new, fashionable, oversized tank-top! 1. Lay the t-shirt flat out on the floor. 2. Start by cutting off the sleeve about an inch in the sleeve seam. 3. Cut downward in a semi-circle shape about 6 inches lower than the natural

sleeve. 4. Do the same thing to the other sleeve. 5. Before you start to cut the neckline, notch how far down you want your new neckline to go. 6. Start cutting about a half of an inch away from the original neckline. 7. Cut in a circular v shape down to the center notch you made. 8. To make sure both sides are even, start cutting from the top of the other

game more exciting and fun! Here’s what you’ll need:

- Twister - Paint matching the dots on Twister That’s all you’ll need! Now all that’s left is to pour the paint on dots spin the arrow and have fun! It’s no secret that basically anything floral is in for the summer. We have the floral shirts, shorts, pants, purses, headbands, etc. It’s also no secret that they are pretty high in price. For most girls, we love the floral shorts with a plain tank top, or cute shirt. However we don’t love the price of the shorts. Well, the solution to that problem is quite simple, really. Here’s what you’ll need to make your own cute floral shorts: - Denim Short - Tulip Soft Fabric Paint - 2 Paintbrushes - Paint Palette - Floral Rubber Stamps Here’s what you’ll do!

side, rather than just continuing to cut along. As much as we would all love to say that every single day of our summer is filled exciting plans and lots to do, that’s not always the case. There are days when you’re with a few of your friends and you don’t have all that much to do. So in that case, why not play one of those old games you used to play when you were a kid? No, I’m not talking about CandyLand or Sorry, I’m talking about Twister. But what if you could make the game more interesting? Well, there’s an easy way to make this

23

Pour out each color of paint onto the palette. Paint a light coat of whatever color you choose onto the stem and leaf areas of the stamp and another color for the flower areas. Be sure to use a light coat and maybe test it out onto a scrap fabric to make sure you like the look. Then, continue all around the short. As you are stamping away, I recommend cleaning the stamp (running it through water and wiping off any excess paint) after stamping a couple times; the fabric paint tends to dry pretty quickly. Let dry fully dry.

final thought The Yin and Yang of 1:1 “Mr. Barr can I build my World War 1 trench with Minecraft?” “No! I’m not going to let you play games for your project.” “Wait come here and look Mr. Barr…..” This ladies and gentlemen was my first eye-opening experience with how the use of technology could transform my classroom. I remember my first year teaching @ReedsSpringHS Mr. @coachkess76 and I joined a technology initiative that rewarded us with “cutting edge” laptops and new strategies to transform our classrooms. Ms. @jelfrink desperately tried to lead the few teachers who braved to change the way they thought about education in an era when Facebook had just become mainstream, Twitter hadn’t even been invented yet and our “state of the art” laptops were as heavy as school desks! My, my, how times have changed. By the way, that was only 6 years ago! Perhaps explaining the meaning of Yin and Yang is appropriate before we go any further. Thus to use one of Mr. Lynch’s favorite sources of information Wikipedia (he stops reading at this point), yin and yang essentially, “ is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.“ For example, life and death, heaven and hell, good and evil, etc. In many ways this concept runs parallel not only through our school but throughout education in general across the United States. When public education started to be find the difference first enforced it was set up around an may solutions

agrarian society that demanded summers off so students could work in the fields and on the farms. As times changed and industrialization came into being education became more focused on setting up routines to follow and rote learning. Memorizing information and following a bell schedule were essential components to education and no one questioned the ideology or pedagogy (Mr. Harbison’s favorite word). The problem with the last two descriptions is that they should sound way too familiar. Unfortunately, as we fast-forward over a hundred years of history education hasn’t encountered another evolution. However, there is a storm brewing and it is not just demanding education to evolve but more importantly calling for education to be revolutionized. What does this new model look like? Is it simply handing out computers to every student and letting them tweet all day? Or there’s the fear we teachers have that perhaps we should eliminate bells and classrooms and let students go to learning centers that are monitored by a manager while students watch videos on Khan Academy, Youtube, and TED. The million dollar question is what will it take to truly change the culture of education in America and prepare our students for the 21st century instead of the 20th? How do we escape this universe of Yin and Yang where we earnestly want to be progressive and cutting edge yet we hold on to outdated structures and methodologies of the past? Alas, we are now at a great crossroad. Many of us who are braving this new culture are perplexed trying to get

27

Mr. Craig Barr

a vision for the great unknown. For example, because of technology’s rapid development and its intrinsic connection to virtually every career field experts anticipate jobs will exist in as little as five years that no one as a concept of yet. How do we prepare students for jobs that haven’t even been created yet? Furthermore, we are living in a world that is not bound by time, physical walls, or tradition. Twitter is the fastest news source in the world, Pintrest has opened the door for people to define themselves without fear of norms being broken, and Skype has provided us the chance to have personal, intimate, or casual face-to-face communication without being in the same room, county, or country. If our culture and world operate without walls and have access to information anywhere and anytime then why don’t our classrooms? In conclusion, we can’t change education, we have to seek to revolutionize it or at the very least reform it. It’s going to take a complete paradigm shift and we have to break down outdated models of thinking. We cannot provide teachers and students with computers and the internet but then allow them to do the same type of assignments or projects of the past century. We have to inspire creation, passion, and purpose with a vision projecting the future. Conceivably we can do this with or without technology but we can’t do it without stepping away from what is not working anymore.
