BEHIND THE SCENES LETTER FROM THE EDITORS: Hello Reeds Spring students! I am Sammantha Thorpe the lead editor for the Pulse magazine. I must say that I am extremely proud of this team of writers. Each and everyone of them invested time into the articles they produced, meeting deadlines, and reaching out to grab your attention. I want to thank our sponsors; Mr. Locke and Mr. Harmon. They were big supporters and kept open ears to any ideas we had. As you read keep in mind we are trying to reach everyone in the school, we tried to touch base with most if not all clubs in the school. If at any time you have any suggestions email me sthorpe@s.rs-wolves.com, or our Co-editor therzan@s.rs-wolves.com. We each had so much fun producing the paper, and hope you enjoy it too. It is new to this team and definitely a new experience for me, and would love to have feedback!

BOOKS

SPOTLIGHT MAKAYLA BUCKNER Lavender Morning is Jude Deveraux’ forty-fourth book, but this is only the second one of her books that I’ve read.

Deveraux created two generations of remarkable characters, beginning with Miss Edi and her friends, and ending with Jocelyn and the friends she makes, including her two tenants. And, she gave both Edi and Jocelyn a quick wit, challenged only by two remarkable men. Lavender Morning kept me up one night, as I had to finish it to discover the secrets of this book. I have the feeling there will be more secrets in the next two books.

Jocelyn Minton’s mother died when she was young, and her father remarried a woman who enjoyed motorcycles with him. The five-year-old was lost in her family, until she was befriended by a neighbor, Edilean Harcourt. Miss Edi understood her, educated her, and shared a more cultured world with the youngster. By the time Miss Edi died, Jocelyn was out of college, but teaching near her friend. She was shocked to learn that Miss Edi left her “a house you’ve never heard of in a town I carefully never mentioned.” She also left her a note saying she found her a husband, a handsome young lawyer in Edilean, Virginia, a small town outside of Williamsburg. Poor Jocelyn is in for all kinds of surprises, as she learns that so much of Miss Edi’s autobiographical details weren’t quite right. She has so much to learn about her own family history, as well as Miss Edi’s. Then, the stories and people of Edilean don’t tell her everything she wants to know about her mysterious gardener. It doesn’t take long for the eighteenth-century house to work its way into Jocelyn’s heart. But, it will take a very special person to help her dig into Miss Edi’s mysteries, stories that go back to 1941, at a time when Miss Edi had her own special love.

FCA- Fellowship of Christian athletes

Foreign Language Club is taught by Ms. Curtis. It’s a club designed to promote intercultural change. The students learn new customs, ideas, and values. In this class, students will strive to make a difference in the communities of other countries. A main service the class will be providing is sending shoe boxes filled with toys to about 90 countries. Foreign Language Week is March 1-7 and there will be multiple contests. Throughout the year there will be movie and game nights, corn mazes, bowling, and students will partake in foreign foods.

FCA will take place during our guided study hall on Friday’s. This is a time set out for any students who would like to come extra time to meet with others to discuss and share our faith. Yes, the name does say for athletes but this is not just for those in sports. This is for anyone! Throughout this time we will sing, talk, pray and just spend time digging into each other’s lives and God’s word. Coach Yocum is our FCA sponsor. We asked him how we would explain our FCA program and he told us “the purpose is a student run organization that gives students the platform to grow in Christ”

NHS

We will have a set time for worship which will be led by a few select students. If you are interested in working with them, feel free to talk to them or Yocum. We will have student leaders from each grade, our senior representatives are Joel Gertson, Anna VanHitsma, and JP Gardener. There will be times where we will have guest speakers and also our students speaking. This is definitely a time to gather with other students and administrators to come together express our faith

BASS CLUB

CLUBS

Kyndall Porter Bass club was started from the want of a student who wanted to fish in college, but as he looked into it they realized that the club had to be offered in high school. He and his dad started what we call Bass Club. This is an origination that takes part in tournament fish. There is spring and fall seasons for the different tournaments that can be participated in. The kids are the only ones who are allowed to catch the fish and they are also given a limit. Each kid can catch up to five fish to be weighed. They will go out and catch their fish and then have the weighed to be placed in 1st through 5th place. Bass club has many benefits, like winning equipment or scholarship money. Last year Britain dover and Colton Essick won a total of twenty-six hundred dollars to go to any school they would like in the 2016 teen angler championship. We asked Brittin some questions about bass club, “what do you like about bass club?” He replied with “hanging out with good people and just being on a boat with Colton, and just getting to fish” We also asked what was the most enjoyable about having a partnership like they do, and “getting to fish together” was a great way to describe it. Many students have had the opportunity to win money and many have. Bass club also brings up their middle schoolers who are interested and give them a chance to get into something they love. This is also giving the opportunity to the middle schoolers to have an easier transition to high school.

HOMECOMING AMANDA PRYOR

Homecoming of 2016 was exciting, lively, and hype. What else could we expect from the Reeds Spring Wolves? We celebrated a great victory September 23rd. The student section was decked out in red and white, ready to cheer on our football boys. The Wolves put in work like they do every Friday night, and pulled us through with yet another win 5814. Reeds Spring is now 5 and 1; we competed the Hollister Tigers, a school we’ve been having a friendly feud with. It was definitely a spirit filled day and night, we are super lucky to have such a supportive town and school.

seeing the Homecoming Parade come through as I’ve grown up as a wolf. Now seeing the hard work and how many people it takes to orchestrate the parade is crazy. Reeds Spring, being the competitive school it is, incorporates a contest into the float making each year. People vote on which float was the best decorated. This year, the Junior Class Student Council float won the float Contest. Their theme was “Welcome to the Circus”. We also had our Homecoming dance. It was held in the Auxiliary Gym after the game. It always has fun lights and good music to celebrate our victory with.

To show school spirit and support, the Student Council led a Spirit Week leading up to Friday night. Monday was class color day, where each class dressed a different designated color. Our Seniors were in black, Juniors had white, Sophomores had blue, and freshman had red, and the teachers repped out wolf grey! Tuesday was Character/Costume day, where we came to school in our favorite costumes. Wednesday was Preppy Day, which always has a great turn out. Thursday was Decades day; it was fun to see each class dressing up as a different decade like the 50s or 60s. Friday was of course Red and White day. The class that participated the most was earning spirit points and at the end of the week would win the Spirit Stick during the Pep Rally. The Junior class won the Spirit Stick, for the second year in a row. Samantha Godfrey told me, “I loved spirit week, dressing up for the 50s was fun. But my favorite part was probably winning the spirit stick… again.” She laughed.

This year’s Homecoming Court included JT Bayliff, Katie Essary, Kendall Porter, Cole Watson, Mac Duvall, Kelly Newton, Madison Bauer, Keenan Haynes, JP Gardner, Hannah Erickson, Maddie Walker, Joel Gertson, Korey Robinette, and Lyndsey Yocum. Last year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Lizy Knittel and Nick Haddock, were unable to attend this year’s Homecoming to pass down the crowns. Instead, Juniors Tyler Herzan and Morgan Essary crowned our winners Keenan Haynes and Madison Bauer. Junior Mac Duvall said, “ I was flattered for the nomination, I just kept remembering how much my feet hurt, and how nervous I was. I was asking Kelly where to stand because I wasn’t there for practice, I had a Softball tournament. I’m surprised I didn’t fall, I’m super clumsy and everybody was watching me.”

Homecoming is about more than just winning or losing and who won queen or king. It about coming together as a school and supporting our boys, doing what they love. Fridays Pep Rally was festive and full of pride for the It’s about working together and showing school spirit, and Wolves. There were games for the Homecoming Court, one being passionate about where you come from. Reeds Spring of which some students were blindfolded and had to place has only ever supported each other, and doing fun things like the crown on the Senior lady candidates. The band led us this keeps our learning atmosphere close knit and fun for evin our usual class chants; those definitely get each class su- erybody. per pumped. And then our usual pep talk competition to ‘help’ the students with our problems. This time the competition was between Mrs. Harrell and Coach Mettlach. During school Friday was also our Homecoming Parade! The Wolves band led Jeeps and Floats of the Football team, Tennis Team, Student Council class floats, Tennis team, Volleyball team, etc. It’s a fun tradition every year for every school in the district to be able to see the hard work that goes into making those floats. I’ve always remembered looking forward to 10

EVENTS

CURRENT EVENTS NFL Brendan Durham San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, did not stand up for the National Anthem prior to the 49ers preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. This rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but some people agreed with him. His reasoning for refusal to stand is that he won’t stand up for a flag or a country that belittles people of color. He said that it’s wrong for him to turn his cheek and ignore the current issues. Donald Trump’s response to this act was, “Perhaps he should find another country.” Kaepernick is being criticized greatly, but former Cleveland Brown running back, Jim Brown, says that he agrees with Kaepernick 100%. Many other players have their opinions about this controversy. New York Giants wide receiver, Victor Cruz, disagrees with Kaepernick. Cruz said that it is, “Kap’s prerogative” but he thinks that it is selfish of Kaepernick to not stand up and that “you have to understand the game and what’s going on in the country are bigger than you.”

JOHN LENNON’S KILLER MaKayla Buckner

On December 8, 1980, Chapman staked out the Manhattan condo building where previous Beatle John Lennon lived with his better half, Yoko Ono, and their child, Sean. Subsequent to motivating Lennon to sign a duplicate of his most recent collection as Lennon and Ono were leaving home, Chapman held up until the couple came back to the flat that night and shot Lennon in the back with a gun. Chapman let go five rounds into Lennon outside New York’s Dakota Hotel.

STRANGER THINGS Jacob Yano Madmax, The Boy Who Came Back To Life, The Pumpkin Patch, the Palace, The Storm, The Pollywog, The Secret Cabin, The Brain, and The Lost Brother. If you don’t already know what those are titles are, they are all the episode titles for the new season of the almost automatic Netflix hit Stranger Things. The new season will jump ahead only 1 year to 1984, all your favorite characters will be returning except maybe Eleven. Eleven, being the little girl who was the main focus of season 1. The Duffer Brothers said “We don’t know about eleven, we leave that up in the air.” As sad as that might be, I’m sure she’ll make her return in season two, but the news doesn’t just stop there. If you didn’t count the names yet, this season we get 9 episodes in contrast to the 8 episodes of Season 1, we get one more episode of Stranger Things! I don’t know about you but that makes me want to jump with joy! Season two is expected sometime in 2017, most likely in the summer of it but if you haven’t seen the first season, first, why not? And secondly, go watch it as soon as possible. It’s seriously amazing.

Mark David Chapman, the man who killed John Lennon 36 years prior, was denied parole for a ninth time on Monday, in light of the fact that his wrongdoing was planned and big name looking for in nature, the New York State Board of Parole said. The board said Chapman’s discharge would belittle the earnestness of the wrongdoing. 12

CHANGES IN RSHS

So, Ive gathered that Seminar was a success so far. The students had minor complaints, but this being the first year Sammantha Thorpe RSHS has tried Seminar out, Id say the staff did a good job. For the 2016-2017 school years, Reeds Spring has Its important that we like coming to school and these enrichmade some changes to our day to day schedules. On Thurs- ment classes are definitely a step towards that goal. days, at the end of the day, Teachers are offering enrichment and interest classes. Each teacher basically chooses a topic, for example Harmon is doing Hogwarts appreciation. So whatever student was interested in Harry Potter, they would sign up for that class with Mr. Harmon. These classes don’t have to do anything with academics, they are simply to stimulate students with things they enjoy. It also gives us a chance to bond with teachers who have similar interests as us. I went to a student from each class and asked their opinion, seeing how they felt about the seminar they were in, what they would change if they could, etc. Freshman Star Brokate told me, “ My experience was fun and relaxing, I had coffee talk. My favorite part was having a place to talk with my friends.” She went on to say Seminar was her favorite class that day and she enjoyed getting to just chill out. The next person I interviewed was Junior Brooklyn Johnson. She replied with, “ I enjoyed the seminar, my friends and I got to make cute coasters. But, I think we should have a different space for us to work in, it was kind of loud and crowded because of another seminar we were sharing the lunch room with.” Johnson seemed pleased with how her craft turned out, they made mini pallet coasters. I was also in this seminar and I agree that I wish we could have a different space for this class. Mrs. Green made it work though and it was fun. Jocelyn Goetz, a sophomore, was also in the Pinterest craft seminar. She was excited telling me, “It was great. My favorite part was how I got to make my craft with my friends. If I could change anything it would be that the Ping Pong boys weren’t so loud.” This was who we were sharing the lunchroom with, so I thought that part was kind of funny. It seemed like the Pinterest Craft class was one of the largest with fifty kids. The last student I asked about seminar was Senior Audra Garrett. She said her time in seminar was, “Actually really nice, because I got to do what I wanted at the end of the day. Seminar was solid.” Garrett didn’t have a lot to say about the subject, but she was clearly happy about the class that she chose. 13

MUSIC

MUSIC KYNDALL PORTER

Music: sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Music is a go to for many people. It is a way that expresses things that we can’t say ourselves. It is a way to help us focus. We listen to music no matter that mood we are in. We use it to warm up when being active, mad, sad, or happy. We listen to music when we shower so that we can sing along as loud as possible. We listen to music when are diving and sleeping. We dance to it, but we also produce it. According to Dr. Nina Kraus’s who works with Harmony projects says that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but attend high school. MOVIES FOR HALLOWEEN JACOB YANO

really stands well to today’s standards and it has a great scary aspect to it.

Halloween is just right around the corner and if you’re like me then the best way to spend it is watching some scary movies. So instead of having to search for yourself, I brought the movies to you! With the top 5 scariest stories to watch on Halloween, it’ll for sure make you rethink sleeping.

2. Exorcist (R) This has to be the scariest movie I have ever seen and to make it even scarier it’s supposedly based on a true story, which freaks me out even more! The movie’s about a girl who is possessed and it shows a priest’s struggle to exorcise her and free her from the demon that has taken over but you might say “Jacob, that doesn’t sound so scary.” Well yeah, you’re right it doesn’t, but if this tells you anything, this is the most profitable horror movie ever made and it’s everyone’s number 1 scary movie and I promise it will give you nightmares too. So if you want to go without sleep for a week, this is the perfect movie for you!

5. Paranormal Activity (R) Paranormal Activity. The movie to jump start the found footage movies ever since The Blair Witch Projects. The paranormal activity movies are generally based around this one family and it shows their story and how they deal with the hauntings on them.

4. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (R) Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the movie everyone views at one point just because of all the talk about it. It’s a great scary movie and an even better slasher. The movie’s about a group of teens who fall victim to the paranormal killer, Freddy Krueger, whose M.O. is to come into people’s dreams and kill them which in turn, kills them outside of the reality. This is one of my favorite horror movies and a great watch on Halloween.

1. Halloween (1978) (R) Even though I believe the exorcist is scarier (just by a little!). Halloween (1978) is the absolute perfect movie to watch on Halloween, it’s even shares a name! One of the most famous and scariest slasher villain has to be Michael Myers, who is the main focus of Halloween

3. Alien (R) Alien has to be one of the movies that really doesn’t feel super outdated with all the special effects and props used in it. It

SPORTS

SPORTS BRENDAN DURHAM

FOOTBALL The Wolves football team started the season with a win by a score of 47-34 against Mt. Vernon. Not only was it an offensive shootout, but a historic game as well. The Wolves broke the school record for rushing yards in a game with a whopping 655. Running back, Korey Robinette, was a big part of that. He ran for an astounding 282 yards and 3 touchdowns in the victory. He accomplished this accolade in just 3 quarters! If it weren’t for some cramps, Korey would’ve eclipsed the 300 yard mark with ease. Keenan Haynes, who is a fullback and linebacker, went down with a broken fibula Friday. His timetable for return is unknown. Keenan is a senior leader on the team and a big part of the success the Wolves have had the last couple years. He is a key player and replacing him will not be an easy task. On the defensive side of the ball, defensive end Garrett Miller, played phenomenal. He had 7.5 tackles and a sack. First year starting quarterback Austin Staugaard impressed against the Mountaineers playing very well. He also played linebacker and had a momentum shifting interception. The Wolves started off the season right with a tough fought win, but a W all the same. The team went to Cassville on Friday looking to reach 2-0. Instead, they suffered a 27-6 loss. It was a tough night for the team. They followed up their 655 rushing yard performance with only 86 on the ground. In a game like that, the few times the ball has thrown has to be good and it was to an extent. The Wolves only passed the ball 5 or 6 times. Seniors Joel Gertson, Korey Robinette, and Brendan Durham each had a catch. A solid drive was killed by an interception, though. This Friday is a big game for the team as they play at home against a conference rival, Bolivar.

first game of season on Friday. They absolutely demolished Hollister 11-1. That must’ve been a long bus ride back home for the Tigers. Allie Dickerson had a 2 homer game with 5 R.B.I. Hannah Erickson threw a 3 hitter and struck out 8 batters. The team also went to Nixa on Tuesday and played a little more ball than expected. The game went into 9 innings and they got a big win 5-3. The score was tied 3-3 until Mackenzie Duvall hit a go-ahead 2-run home run in the top of the 9th to finish off the Eagles. On Wednesday, the softball team traveled to play Republic. It was a rough one to say the least. The final score was 12-0, Republic on top. The Lady Wolves hosted a tournament on August 27th. They cruised to a 16-2 victory against Hollister in the first game of the day. The Wolves faced Ava in the second game and both teams were scoreless until the 5th inning when the Wolves broke it open. They went on to win by a final score of 6-1. On Tuesday, August 30th, the team played away in East Newton. It was a low scoring game and the Patriots came out on top 2-0.

GIRLS TENNIS

The first tennis match of the young season was also Friday, August 19th, in Republic. The team suffered a tough loss, going down 9-0 to the Tigers. They gathered themselves and prepared for their home opener against Bolivar on Monday. They battled and beat the Liberators 6-3 to get back to .500 with a record of 1-1. Hopefully the team can keep this electricity moving forward. On August 25th, the team went down to Willow Springs 8-1. In the Forsyth Tournament on August 27th, the women went 0-3 with losses to Willow Springs, Clever, and Forsyth. On August 30th, the tennis team traveled to Springfield Catholic. The Fighting Irish are known for their tennis and they showed it with a 9-0 SOFTBALL win. The girls are in a slump right now. This loss brings their record to 1-6. Come show the team more support and help The Lady Wolves were unfortunately overshadowed them get back on track. by the football team and wrongfully so. SPORTS VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team started off the season with a home game against Mt. Vernon on Tuesday. They rolled to win 2-0. The ladies looked really comfortable even though it was just their first bout all year. They just looked like the superior team. Their communication was fantastic and they made some spectacular digs to keep plays alive. There were many long rallies, but the Wolves executed and capitalized on those rallies which ultimately led to a victory against the Mountaineers. The student section was wild and the players fed off of the energy. This also factored into the outcome. On Thursday, the team went to Seneca to look to get their 2nd win of the season. Things didn’t go as planned and the girls came out with the loss. The ladies performed pretty well at the Branson tournament on August 27th. They played 6 games and went 3-3 with wins against Clinton and twice against Lamar and losses to Lebanon, Rockwood Summit and Father Tolton. On August 29th the team crossed the bridge to Blue Eye. The Wolves stomped Blue Eye 2-0 and the student section was lit. The official had to tell them to quiet down while Blue Eye was serving. That didn’t stop the student section though. Senior, Madison Bauer, played great and led the team to their 4th win of the season. On August 30th, the Wolves faced the Clever Blue Jays at their place. The ladies lost 2-0 and suffered their 4th loss of the season. In the second game, the girls overcame a 14-3 deficit and came and tied the game at 19. They eventually went down 25-22.

CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country has been practicing and working hard in anticipation of their first meet of the year. It will take place in Strafford this Saturday, September 3rd. Good luck to our runners!

WOLVES HISTORY BRENDAN DURHAM

win games. They can win a few games even if they don’t work as a team, but eventually the players will start bickering and blaming everybody else for mistakes. If there is good camaraderie and teammates lift each other up, then that’s when the magic happens. If the Wolves play as a brotherhood, like Coach Gosch always says, then they will be golden.

The Reeds Spring Wolves are currently known for their football team, but it wasn’t always this way. From the early 2000’s (about 2003) to the early 2010’s, Reeds Spring football had a tradition of losing. They didn’t only lose, they constantly went 2-8, 1-9, 3-7, and had records of the such. The team struggled to even win three games. It’s not that those teams didn’t have talent, they just had a losing mentality because they were so used to losing. Things have really turned around in recent years. When the mentality changed to one that was of winning, then we actually started to win football games. All of the hard work out on the field and especially in the weight room is showing on Friday nights. Don’t forget the multitude of talent that this team has. The talented players are obviously a big factor in winning. The last few years have been good for Reeds Spring football. Last year the team went 10-2. That is a great record but they lost in the district championship game. This year they look to take the next step. The football team received NFL-grade turf and a new scoreboard. Their field has been completely remodeled. This raises the expectations that others have for the team. Multiple people have said, “Now that they have new turf, they better do something big.” It is time to see what the Wolves are made of.

The football team lost a lot of seniors, including quarterback, Nick Haddock. The Wolves have plenty of kids to step up and assume the roles left behind, though. Austin Staugaard is stepping up as the new starting quarterback. The Wolves have the dudes to go far this year. They just have to work as a team and sacrifice themselves for one another and they will be successful. If they take it one week at a time, and don’t overlook any opponent, they will be something to hear about. The Wolves are very determined to prove their haters wrong. They are going to make a run this year and when they do, people will see the true talent of Reeds Spring. The coaches, starting with head coach Lance Gosch, are doing a great job in coaching up these kids not only to win games and become great players, but to also become better men. The players are being taught life lessons and traits that will be valuable to them as adults. For example, some of these traits are accountability, teamwork, respect, and determination. Coach Gosch can’t stress enough how important each and every day is. Every day of practice has to be great or it is a day wasted. That is a day that the team won’t get back. That is the importance of each and every moment. Good preparation is also very vital. Watching film and having good practices go directly into the preparation for that Friday night. The coaches are always on the player’s case about watching lots of film, and for good reason. A lack of preparation could very easily result in a loss.

The Wolves trained hard in the offseason and have put in countless hours of work and endured tons of pain but it is all worth it. All of that work will translate to wins on Friday nights and ultimately allow the Wolves to do something they haven’t done in over a decade and a half. That is to win a district championship. It doesn’t stop there, though. The Wolves won’t just be satisfied with a district championship. Their goal is to win a state championship, nothing less. They believe that they can accomplish this feat if everybody does their job to the best of their ability. It will be a challenge, but it is a very attainable goal for this group of athletes. It’s going to take hard work, discipline, talent, and teamwork. The Wolves believe they have all of these components and that they will go a long way if they work as a team. That is an immense factor in football. Teamwork. It is a very big key if the Wolves want to

The people of Reeds Spring love their football and would be ecstatic if the Wolves went deep into the playoffs this year. The team knows they aren’t just playing for their program. They are representing the city of Reeds Spring and they will do it with pride and a winning attitude.

SPLURGE OR STEAL, HOW TO AVOID SEPHORA PRICE GOUGING

Everyone has probably heard of the very popular cosmetic store, Sephora. You walk in and there’s quite possibly every makeup item you might need. They have very helpful Sephora representatives that will help you find whatever you’re looking for, and have a very fun atmosphere. If you’re looking for a girls day out, this would definitely be a place you’d want to hit up. Regardless of all their quality products and knowing staff, some opt to pass on Sephora. Its no secret their prices are through the roof. Reasonably so, the products they sell have a popular name and are always in high demand. So, if you still want to enjoy Sephora and pass on their arguable price gouging, I have some tips.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING Around big Holidays like Christmas, Halloween, and especially Valentine’s Day, Sephora offers makeup kits. In these they include a bunch of small samples of either one Brand, or one makeup item. For instance they might give you six liquid lipsticks, each of a different brand. Or, the kit might just be a brand like Too Faced, and inside would be sample sizes of a bronzer, a small eyeshadow pallet, and featuring mascara. I think it’s smart to buy these sample kits because you get to try out a bunch of different prices without having to pay for the full size tube/ bottle. It’s a good opportunity if you’re looking for a gift for a makeup savvy friend and want to get them a variety of things. These kits might cost only 60 dollars instead of buying the full size bronzer and liquid lipstick that would end up being more money for less variety of products.

LOOK FOR DUPES Dupes, short for Duplicate, is when a product or a brand is getting a lot of attention, and then a cheaper drugstore brand makes a very similar product. For instance the Makeup Forever Ultra HD Foundation ($43), is a top seller at Sephora Stores right now. The ELF drugstore brand came out with a similar product called Studio Flawless Finish ($6) which you can find at most drugstores. A lot of times the quality of the product is sacrificed, though. The cheaper product might not last all day, it might not be very blend able, and you could have problems finding a decent color match. There are a lot of hits though, you just have to try out different duplicates and see which ones work the best for you. One of my favorites is the remake of Benefits the Porefessional face primer ($31). I found it in Beauty Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($3).

SEPHORA BEAUTY INSIDER

Probably one of the more helpful tips I can give, is signing up for the Beauty Insider point system on your first purchase at Sephora. Every time you make a purchase at Sephora, you get loyalty points that are added to your account. The more money you spend, and also the more merchandise you buy, the more your points will start adding up. These points get you discounts, for one. I went in with a gift card and spent all $200, but, because I’m a Beauty Insider, I received 20 percent off and didn’t have to spend my whole gift card. If you know you have points added up, you can go online and redeem them for products. So for example, 100 points could probably get you a travel size body lotion, where as 500 points can get you a Makeup Forever sample kit. Also, if you’re a part of their Loyalty Program, you can get free gifts sent to you on your birthday. Last year they sent me the new NAKED Smokey eyeshadow Pallet.

FREE SAMPLES My last tip any Sephora enthusiast would for sure appreciate are the free samples. A t Sephora, you are allowed a free sample of any product showcased; you just have to ask one of the Sephora employees. I stock up. They are really helpful if you just want to try something out and don’t want to spend 50 plus dollars on a product you might not even like. If you just have one event to go to, an example being Prom, then you can save your money and get a small tester tube of your favorite mascaras instead.

ADVICE

STUDENT HACKS KYNDALL PORTER

These are just a few hacks to keep in mind as you are falling behind or struggling. There are many more hacks that may help you better, but here there are just a few that seem reasonable enough and simple to get done to help you out.

Hacks are a must as we really get into the school year, time is flying but there are always those days that we really don’t want to get out of bed. Sometimes it takes everything we have to just shut off the alarm, well if you are having one of those morning and are having to rush to get ready then here is a solution to calm down the rush. Make a playlist of your favorite music to get you into a good mood that is as long as the amount of time you have to get ready. On Spotify there is a place when it tells you how long your playlist is, this is a huge help. If you then remember what song is last then you will know as soon as that song starts there is little time left. If you are really bad at taking too much time on something then make your playlist shorter so then you will get ready in that amount of time and still have enough time to make it to school without being late. This is a great way to not only give you a chance to listen to your favorite music but put you in a good mood. Writing… there will be at some point in your high school career when you are allowed to pick our topic for an essay. Some could pick a topic and write for days, others of us never can come up with something to write about. If you are someone who has lots of trouble finding something to write your paper on, then here is a student hack to help your problem. When searching look for a topic that either bothers you or that you have strong feelings for or against. Picking something that interests you or you can’t stand could let you rant on for hours. This is a good strategy when you have no idea what to do. There is always something that gets under your skin write about it, this not only helps you express your thought and feeling but gives you the opportunity to get your work done and share the things that get to you as a person. Here is another little hack for your writing, when you finish writing a paper or essay copy it and paste it into Google Translate, and listen to it. This is a good way to catch your mistakes or fix anything that sounds wrong. A perfect way to get a perfect score on your work.
