The Y’s official anniversary date is July 24, 2014. In celebration of this date, the Y is hosting 100-hours of open house in which members and non-members are welcome to use the Y and attend fitness classes free of charge. British Soccer Camp June 9-13 The Albert Lea Family Y and the Albert Lea Soccer Association have teamed up to host the Challenger Sports Company’s Bristish Soccer Camp. Sign up online at www.challengersports.com

Playroom Service
The playroom child care service is for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years while their parents are at the Y. Monday—Friday: 8:30am-11:00am Monday—Friday: 5:00pm-7:30pm Saturday: 8:45am-12:00pm Payment for playroom services is by playroom cards only. Cards can be purchased at the front desk and come in increments of $12 or $24. Fee: $2.00 per child per hour

KidZone
KidZone is a child care service just like the playroom but for older children ages 7-10. Sign your children into KidZone so you can enjoy your adult time at the Y! This program is offered during summers only. Starts Monday, June 9.

Have your child’s next birthday party at the Y! Our birthday parties are an hour and half long with your choice of the gym or swimming. You will also have access to our party room to finish up the party.

Kids Day Off
Throughout the school year there are several days of no school for the kids. On those week days, the place for K-5 elementary school youth to be is the Y! We offer games, crafts, group activities, swimming and lots of fun. Children can arrive as early as 7:00am and must be picked up by 6:00pm. The Y staff lead all activities. Parents need to bring two snacks, a sack lunch, swim suit and towel for their children.

The Y’s School’s Out Program The Y’s School’s Out Program offers a safe, fun, and educational place for your children to go after school. Students grades K-5 will enjoy games, sports, crafts, and time for homework. The program starts immediately after school and ends at 6:00pm. Look for more information in the Fall Program Brochure!

When is camp? Camp runs Monday through Friday and starts June 9 and ends August 29. Kids can come for the day, the week, or all summer long. Campers can be dropped off at the Y as early as 7:00am and be picked up as late as 6:00pm. Even though camp staff are onsite from 7:00am-6:00pm, camp activities initiate at 9:15am and conclude at 4:30pm. A $5 late fee will be charged for every 15 minute time slot past 6:00pm. What do campers do all day? Daily activities include playing sports and games, swimming, gardening, doing crafts and going on trips to local parks and attractions. Campers swim everyday at the Y, and occasionally swim at other outdoor pools. Once a month, campers have the opportunity for an overnight stay at the Y. Campers also go on out-of-town field trips several times throughout the summer. See the field trips list. Where do they go & how do they get there? Parents are responsible to drop off and pick up campers at the Y every day. For field trips, a bus is provided and transportation and special events costs are included in camp fees. A newsletter is provided each week indicating the times of field trip departures and returns. If your camper misses the bus, we cannot transport your child. You must find transportation for them. Camp Swim Lessons Children enrolled in our day camp program have the opportunity to sign up for swim lessons. Lessons are held for 30 minutes, 3 days a week, for 2 weeks at a time. Numerous 2-week sessions will take place throughout the summer. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn how to swim with no extra inconvenience to you! $10 per 3-week session.

1914 The Albert Lea Family YMCA was incorporated under the leadership of Judge A.V. Mayland, the first YMCA president. The office was located at 201 South Broadway.

1924 Mrs. L.E. (Lilian) Brown started the YWCA. In 1928, sewing, Spanish, painting, charm and personality classes were formed. Classes were held in rooms rented over the old Rivoli Theater, which is now the Albert Lea Art Center. 1929 The Y started its camping program with the older boys camping at Beaver Lake and the younger boys at Pickerel Lake. 1940 The Y acquired Moraine Point (Myre Big Island State Park). The Y’s Men Club and the “87” Club kept busy building cabins for the Y’s Camp Moraine. 1950 YMCA rents space on the second floor of Plymouth Shoe Store. Prior to that, the YMCA offices were in the Hyde Building and in the Medical Arts Building.

1959 YWCA moves to the house on St. Mary Avenue. Programs included Y-Teen Group, craft classes, flower arranging, table decoration, foreign languages and bridge. 1953 YMCA acquired its own building at 115 North Newton. Programs included adult leagues, horseshoe pitching and camp trips 8
1972 The YMCA and YWCA move into the new building on 2021 West Main Street (current location). An open house was held on March 19 to showcase the new building that featured an exercise room, locker rooms, offices, meeting rooms and pool. 1975 The YMCA and YWCA combined to form the Albert Lea Family Y. 1979 An open house was held on April 29 to dedicate the new addition which included the gym, running track and racquetball courts.

1985 The “Eagle” room was established. It housed Eagle strength training machines. 1987 The summer day camp program began. The program was (and still is) offered 5 days a week for the entire summer. Children enjoyed day camping activities at Myre Big Island State Park. 1989 School-age child care initiated at the Y. Programs included School’s Out and Kid’s Day Off. These programs are still offered today. 1998 In July of 1998, the Eagle strength training machines were moved to what was named the Spirit Mind and Body (SMB) room. Other major fitness equipment was purchased as well. The SMB room is still a mainstay of the Y today.

2014 The Albert Lea Family Y continues to offer services and programs that enrich the lives of all ages and demographics. Some major programs include youth sports, swim lessons, fitness classes, personal training, Summer Day Camp, School’s Out, and Youth In Government.

Adult Pick-Up Pickleball Pickleball equipment is available at the front desk for check-out. Two courts are also marked in the gym. Pick up games take place at various times. Common times of play are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00-1:00pm and Monday nights 5-8pm.

Adult Racquetball League Sign up for the A,B, or C League. Registration opens in November. League play will begin December 2. The length of league play depends on the number of entrants (typically 12-15 weeks). Players’ scores throughout the season will be used to determine end-of-season tournament play. Tabata/H.I.I.T.
Tabata and High Intensity Interval Training is the training method that aims to improve both your aerobic and anaerobic capacities in one workout. In layman’s terms: a high intensity interval challenge! This class is great for those who want hard and fast workout in a short amount of time. Non-Members: $28 per session/one day a week
CSI: Cardio Strength Interval Alternate segments of cardio and strength training exercises and you got one great workout! Get in as many reps as you can (or care to) in each time segment and modify each exercise to your liking; this is why all levels are welcome! No dance-like choreography, just exercise. Lean Body Strength Training Non-Members: $28 per session/one day a week Strength training for the entire body! The first 45 minutes alternates between the body’s major muscle groups. This shallow water class enables you to exercise with less strain and impact on joints. Cycling Classes
Indoor Cycling Your instructor will simulate a group ride as you travel on flat roads, climb hills, chase the pack, or race to the finish line! All levels welcome. Non-Member: $28 per session/one day a week Perpetual Motion per·pet·u·al; adjective. Continuing or enduring forever; everlasting. This class alternates bouts of cycling and bouts of strength training off the bike. A great combination of strength and cardio that will leave you asking for more! Cycle Kettlebells Cycling and kettlebells are both great high energy workouts, so why not combine them into one? This class alternates segments of cycling and kettlebell exercises for a total calorie blast. You must be orientated to kettlebells prior to attending class. Orientations are made on the first class of the session or by appointment with the instructor. Non-Member: $28 per session/one day a week

Barre Blend Barre Blend brings exercises from group fitness into the mind/body experience by fusing exercises from ballet, cardio training, Pilates, and yoga into one class to challenge and tone the entire body. This blended genre combines the methodology of strength and control to create a class that improves body awareness, flexibility and stabilization. Non-Members: $28 per session/one day a week
Parent-Toddler Swim Lessons (1&2 year olds) Parent-Preschool Swim Lessons (3&4 yr olds) Parents/guardians are in the water with the child. This is an instructor led class intended to help young children become comfortable and safe in and around water. Techniques will be taught to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner. These classes involve both parent and child in the water. Parent and child will focus on floating and basic skills. Members: $31 Non-Members: $46
YMCA Swim Lessons
The Albert Lea Family Y’s curriculum offers different skill levels that emphasizes stroke mechanics, water games, personal safety, rescue skills and stamina. Please see the Y swim lessons flyer to see how the Y levels compare to Red Cross levels and to find out which level best suits your swimmer. Registration begins two weeks before the first lesson of each session. Levels with fewer than two swimmers may be cancelled or combined with a group one level above or below. Red Cross Lifeguarding
For ages 15 and older. Red Cross Lifeguarding is a national certificate that is recognized by many organizations. Those who successfully complete this course will receive certification in life guarding, first aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer.
