WELCOME!
l
The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to welcome you to our 2011-12 Concert Series. We are proud to continue a “sound tradition” of bringing exciting, innovative and quality concerts to our community for more than 100 years. We are quite confident that in this year’s series there is something that every music lover will find attractive. From classical to jazz and solo performances to large-scale orchestral and choral works, our Concert Series will entertain, educate and feed the soul of every listener. This year marks the beginning of the next century of quality music presentations at Southern Miss. It also marks the final year of the tenure of Dr. Thomas Fraschillo as director of bands. We hope you will join us in paying tribute to Dr. Fraschillo and the legend of musical excellence he leaves behind throughout the year, but particularly during Festa Fraschillo, April 27 - 28, that concludes with his last performance with the Wind Ensemble.
Without the work of outstanding artists/faculty we could not produce the quality or quantity of concerts at your disposal. To that end I want to encourage you to support our talented faculty whose events are listed on the Faculty Artist Series pages. We also host a variety of extremely talented guest artists for your musical enjoyment. On November 29, one of those guests, Dr. Petronel Malan, will kick off our Kawai EPIC program performing a solo recital on the new Kawai Shigeru grand piano. Join us the following week for our annual Holiday Spectacular as our wonderful Symphony Orchestra and Chorale ring in the holiday season. In February, our opera program presents Il Tabarro and Cavallera Rusticana. We follow that in May with J.S. Bach’s beautiful Mass in B minor, as the Orchestra and Chorale join forces once again. And for the third year, with the generous support of Partners for the Arts, we present an exciting array of chamber music in the Connoisseurs Chamber Music Series.
The 2011-12 Concert Series is presented in this booklet in subheadings according to musical genre and ensemble type. We present it this way so that you can go directly to their areas of interest when searching for concerts to attend. If you want to search events by date, there is a complete list of the concerts in the back of the booklet. We hope you will keep the booklet for easy reference, and we look forward to seeing you at all of our concert events this season. Enjoy!
Dr. Michael A. Miles, Director The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music
