The FestivalMusic series has been coordinated by Dr. Theresa Sanchez since the inception of the festival. A consummate musician in her own right, she has set and continually raised the bar for exceptional performances that highlight our festival. The HCA is indebted to her generous donation of time and expertise to bring world-class performances to the Pine Belt, every year, but especially this, our, and her, tenth anniversary season.
This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

“Submerged,” Op. 108 for flute, viola, and harp (2013) Lagniappe Trio
Miguel del Aguila (b. 1957)
Program notes by the composer:
“Submerged,” written in 2013 was commissioned by Hat Trick and Brigham Young University. It is based on Alfonsina Storni’s romantic, surrealist poem “Yo en el fondo del mar.” On the surface, both the poem and music seem innocent and light-hearted, but one feels differently when the author’s fascination with the sea, and her later suicide by drowning in it, are taken into consideration. The piece follows the form of the poem except for the lively introduction and a coda that illustrate the poet’s childhood near her native Argentine Andes, and in Switzerland. With six harp loud chords, the piece “falls” deep underwater: this slow middle section is mysterious, intimate and magical. It recreates the poem’s isolated submerged world where fish with flowers, octopus and sirens dance while birds chirp happily far above water. The harp uses unusual extended techniques, some stemming from Paraguayan harp playing. The viola adds a rhythmic edge by playing constant multiple stop pizzicati imitating a Charango. The flute is the Quena of the ensemble and it uses extended techniques as well. “In my interpretation of Storni’s poem this underwater world is that special place of isolation where many artists withdraw to create a place and mood that can easily turn into depression - a place that ultimately Alfonsina chose to remain and which became her death. In my “Submerged,” I continued the events of the poem and made the listener return to the real world above water. This return is triggered by the memories of her childhood played by the harp and viola as a music box Ländler which turns into a Vidalita, both music which Alfonsina would have heard in her childhood.

PROGRAM NOTES
Dan Forrest’s JUBILATE DEO brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, “O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. The opening movement sets the ancient liturgical Latin translation of the Psalm in a rather American musical idiom, reflecting various influences from the composer’s native country and introducing key musical motives for the work. The second movement sets the “from age to age” portion of the text in Hebrew and Arabic, evoking ancient cultures from the Middle East. The music intentionally intertwines the two languages in a symbolic gesture of unity between these cultures. Movement three uses Mandarin Chinese in a tranquil setting of the shepherd-sheep metaphor from the traditional text and quotes “the Lord is my shepherd” from Psalm 23, while the orchestra evokes the sounds of traditional Asian instruments. The fourth movement shifts to Africa, setting celebratory portions of the text in Zulu and drawing from African vocal and drumming traditions. Movement five represents Latin America, setting Spanish text to a folk-song style melody and blending traditional folk instrumental sounds with polyphonic textures from the classical choral tradition. The sixth movement, “Song of the Earth,” portrays the Earth itself singing—first wordlessly, but eventually finding its own voice—and leads seamlessly into the final movement. The finale unites many of the key themes and cultures from previous movements with other material, both old and new, as all the earth sings as one, “omnis terra, jubilate!”

This is Spinal Tap
The cult classic is a spoof about a filmmaker making a documentary about a once-famous, now almost forgotten British heavy metal band returning to the United States after 17 years for a concert tour. Directed and co-written by Rob Reiner, it stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer and features a stand-out, satirical soundtrack. Rated R

“It’s showtime!” Director/choreographer Bob Fosse takes a Felliniesque look at the life of a driven entertainer. Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is the ultimate work (and pleasure)aholic, as he knocks back a daily dose of amphetamines to juggle a new Broadway production while editing his new movie. The film shows the stiff price that entertaining exacts on entertainers. Rated R

Almost Famous

Eventually, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, becomes friends with Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee), and becomes enamored of groupie, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson).Almost Famous’ original score was composed by Nancy Wilson of Heart. Elvis Presley delivers one of his finest early performances in King Creole, playing a teenager named Danny Fisher, who is forced to drop out of school to help support his ineffective father (Dean Jagger). Drawn to trouble like a magnet, Danny is saved from a jail term by New Orleans saloon-keeper Charlie Le Grand (Paul Stewart), who gives the boy a job as a singer. It isn’t long, however, before local gang boss Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau), a shadowy figure from Danny’s criminal past, puts the muscle on the boy, insisting that Danny sing at his establishment. Together with Jailhouse Rock, King Creole is one of the best, filmed examples of the untamed, pre-army Elvis Presley. Rated PG

B.B. King: The Life of Riley BB King: The Life Of Riley is the muchlauded feature documentary film on the extraordinary life of Blues legend B.B. King, who worked closely with director Jon Brewer for 2 years to create this powerful film. At 88 years old, King, his family, friends and contemporaries unveil the true-life drama that was the springboard for the future ‘King of the Blues’. Battling unrelenting racism and the humiliation of segregation whilst working in the cotton fields as an orphaned child, King lived to overcome the toughest critics in the entertainment industry and ultimately be hailed as one of the kingpins of an entire genre of music. Including appearances by Aaron Neville, Bono, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Willis, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Morgan Freeman, and many, many more, this candid biopic of the life story of one of our living legends is highlighted by rare archive footage and beautifully shot scenes of the deep south.
