Building on the incredible strengths of our community, FestivalSouth has become synonymous with excellence in the arts, offering programming and representing the wealth of talent we enjoy as a community. We have missed you! Now, with both in-person and live streamed events, there are more ways than ever before to enjoy FestivalSouth! None of this year’s return would be possible without the countless hours of our coordinators and “friends of the festival.” Long before the festival recruited them, they have been tireless champions of the arts in our community and continue to work to engage, educate, and enrich our neighbors who hail from around the corner and around the globe. This year, we return focused on your safety and that of our performers. Because of the generous support of our community, we are finally able to continue our second decade. Artist Andrea Kostyal joins the FestivalFamiy this year with her work created exclusively for FestivalSouth 2021. A native of Hungary, Kostyal has called Hattiesburg her home since 2008. Her paintings focus on complex cityscapes composed in dreamlike settings inspired by BID NOW TO OWN urban landscapes and commonly THE FESTIVALSOUTH overlooked places. One of her 12th ANNIVERSARY murals is part of the Hattiesburg COMMEMORATIVE Public Art Trail. PAINTING BY ANDREA KOSTYAL

The Lagniappe Trio returns to the stage for its first live concert since the pandemic began, performing a program of “firsts.” With support from the Mississippi Arts Commission, audiences will have the opportunity to experience world premiere performances of two works, including one by their very own member, Christopher Lowry. They will also perform the first work ever written for the flute, viola, and harp ensemble. This exciting and innovative program is perfect to get live audiences back in the performance halls.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Mississippi, he began playing guitar at age 12, and was inspired by both rock and blues. He attended The University of Southern Mississippi where he earned a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies. His spectacular performances are an eclectic blend of many styles and genres. This entertaining show consists of a variety of original solo guitar pieces, well known songs, and vocals. Voted multiple times as “Best Musician” by the Jackson Free Press, he has performed and/or recorded with numerous artists including the Dee Barton Orchestra, HBO, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Carmine Appice, Dorothy Moore, The Vamps, and The Barry Leach Group. Light Beyond Shadow, acclaimed composer Dan Forrest’s newest, yet to be published work written during the pandemic, will be premiered by the Meistersingers. Sharing a message of hope in response to the global pandemic, it is paired with his the breath of life, a reflection on the beauty and joy of new life juxtaposed with the pain of loss. Forrest creates a rich and poignant soundscape intertwining with profound and compelling texts from Scripture as well as classic and modern poetry to speak to post-pandemic audiences. Finished in 1828, the last year of his life, and published eight years after his death, it is an unusually large work in four movements, that shines with Schubert’s masterful lyricism. Also on the program is Turina’s mature Trio No. 2 which combines romantic tradition with sparkling Spanish flair.

This year’s FestivalJazz concert features the Festival South Jazz All-Stars featuring Andrew Baham in a tribute to Hattiesburg native and jazz trumpet player Bobby Bryant. A graduate of Royal Street High School (Rowan High School), Bobby Bryant had his own jazz band by the time he reached high school. He would later become one of the most sought-after trumpet players in Los Angeles, playing with greats such as Vic Damone, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Della Reese, Quincy Jones, Stan Kenton, the Tonight Show Band, Earth Wind & Fire, and B. He continued his studies at The Eastman School of Music and The University of Alabama. He served as organist at Broad Street United Methodist Church (now Heritage UMC), Temple Baptist Church (now Hardy Street Baptist) and First Presbyterian Church He also spent 17 years teaching at William Carey College and Mississippi College. Since 2000, he has been the Director of Music and Fine Arts at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama where he serves as organist, director of choral activities, and administrator of the nationally prestigious November Organ Recital Series and annual Religious Arts Festival.

Dave Brubeck, an American icon for the world of jazz piano and composition, is considered to be one of the foremost performers of “cool jazz,” and achieved global recognition in his field. His style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting both his classical training and his extraordinary improvisational skills. His compositions are known for employing unusual and complex rhythms and harmonies. He was also a composer of orchestral, sacred, and television music. Everyone knows the most famous musical work ever recorded by his quartet, Paul Desmond’s “Take Five.” Come hear an evening of extraordinary jazz performed by one of the most spectacular jazz quartets in the country, The Sam Bruton Quartet. Members of the quartet are Sam Bruton (piano), Larry Panella (saxophone), David Pellow (bass), and Pete Wehner (drums).

Based on scenes from operas by W. A. Mozart, G. Donizetti and G. Rossini. This opera is a perfect first experience with opera for the young and the young at heart and will help introduce opera to our younglings and future opera lovers.

Listen to explore the worlds of rugged beetles; zipping flies; the searching and finding ants; the clumsy, buzzing bees; the frantic, furious wasps; the flashy butterflies and the darkly beautiful moths. Also, learn from a Hattiesburg Zoo zoologist and more about these bugs and the importance of insects in the world around us. is a feature documentary film that chronicles the life and work of sculptor and Mississippi native, Benjamin Barnes Watts, who has created numerous pieces for and coordinated art events for FestivalSouth. The film, three years in production, follows Watts through every stage during the creation of an original commissioned statue for the national headquarters of Kappa Sigma in Charlottesville, Virginia. The piece also serves to document Ben’s journey from childhood, his faith, and the highs and lows of his career. God Make Me an Artist is an intimate portrait of a celebrated sculptor and the spirit that drives him.

Hub City Service Dogs, trains service dogs for individuals with medical disabilities. There will be door prizes, Topher’s breakfast, a Run-by Dog pageant featuring local celebrity judges, and overall awards for the fastest runner/ walker, with and without dogs. Custom finisher medals will be given to all participants who finish their event. Registration includes a commemorative event T-shirt and access to fun, food and music at the finish line festival. The event will be professionally timed by Diva Timing. Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations and on a fixed leash.
