SOAP Design Process by Morgan Lynn Stockton Kansas City Art Institute, Fall 2013
Product: Handmade Soap Product Description Handmade goat milk soap bar with fragrance. Comes in beautiful swirled colors and medium hand held sizes.
Problem This product suffers from a lack of packaging that makes it so the soap is easily damaged and isn’t displaying it to the best possibility. It’s lack of packaging causes it to possibly be looked over in a boutique full of fun beautiful things.
Current Packaging The soap really has almost no packaging. Right now it’s just a paper band around the soap with the scent typed out on it. Craft is questionable since the tape holding the band on is visible.
Selling Situation Sold in a boutique type situation where there is a small stock need and small distribution. No social media advertising and a small “fan base.”

Logotype The typography of the Capra logotype is a mixture of a script and thin sans serif. The script is a modified version of the typeface MA Sexy. The sans serif is Mensch. The contrast of script and sans helps really emphasize the handwritten and personal quality of Capra while Soap holds stability and readability.
Colors These colors were chosen due to their friendly, welcoming nature. Each color is fresh and sweet in a way that reflects some of the connotations of the soap itself.
Logo The logo, used as a method of displaying the colors is a Capricornus, or goat-fish. The Capricornus was chosen due to the fact that the product itself is goatmilk soap so making the connection from goat to Capricorn to Capricornus.

Patterns The patterns designed for Capra make use to the symbolic Capricornus (the goat-fish). The Capricornus plays and sleeps in an array of bubbles, giving the pattern a whimsical, yet peaceful feel. The bubbles call back to the fact that the pattern encompasses soap while the Capricornus calls back to the brand itself. Patterns were designed in Adobe Illustrator and ordered through Spoonflower.com to be printed as fabric. By having fabric be a dominant part in the design it emphasizes the handmade, touchable quality of the product. Having each part hand sewn just further helps the handmade, local qualities.
