The Spring 2013 line had a little gathering at the chapter house to celebrate their first year in the house of Alpha.

President’s Message I am listed as the 50th president of Mu Lambda. Based upon information and conversations, I understand there are 15 living past presidents of Mu Lambda: James T. Speight, Jr.; Harold Sims (The Chaplain, Brother Butler, had an opportunity to speak with Brother Sims’ wife. See the Chaplain’s report page ??); Eddie Madison; William E. Calbert; Vernon Gill; LeRoy Lowery, III; C.C. Jones; Vincent Orange; Melvin White; James Haynes; Rudolph Harris; Edwin Norwood, III; James McDonald; Timothy Fitzgerald; and Kwame Ulmer. These brothers should be thanked for their unselfish service to the fraternity and the chapter. Having walked in their shoes, I can tell you it is no easy task. These brothers paved the way for my tenure as president – one that is quickly coming to a close. As strange as it may sound – although I am not seeking re-election, I have enjoyed my term as president of this illustrious chapter. The brothers of Mu Lambda have worked extremely hard with few complaints and for that I thank you. My message this month is about you and our collective efforts this fraternal year. (con’t pg 21) 2

Brothers Keeper: Words of thanks and gratitude were expressed to the chapter from Brother Jamison Fort and his family. Bro. Fort (8BAFA06) and his wife Cara (Delta Sigma Theta) are newlyweds who have just started their life and family together. They had their house destroyed in a fire from a gas leak. Unfortunately a neighbor did not survive. Their nine month old daughter, Aria, who is normally home with the baby sitter, was not home on this particular day. Mu Lambda partnered with the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated help. Two large boxes containing shoes; clothes for the mother, father, and baby; pampers; gift cards; and checks were shipped to family. Brothers and Deltas also contributed to the family through the online donation site.

Sorors and Volunteers, The EYL Community Summit sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Xi Omega Chapter and Rho Mu Omega Chapter would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to everyone that volunteered for the Emerging Young Leaders Summit on yesterday and contributed in making the event the success that it was. Thanks to your generosity in donating your time, contributions, and talent we were able to encourage our youth to excel in science, technology, engineering, and math as well as to inspire them to set goals and achieve their dreams. Xi Omega and Rho Mu Omega Chapters are very appreciative of the service you gave to the Metropolitan Washington, DC community and the EYL Community Summit. Again, Thank You. Brothers, ! Holy Week is just around the corner! I pray that each of you have committed to fasting in some way. Holy week is the last week of Lent, the week immediately preceding Easter or Resurrection Sunday. it begins with Palm Sunday (or Passion Sunday). Palm Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds who were in Jerusalem for Passover waving palm branches and proclaiming him (Jesus) as the messianic king. Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday is often celebrated during Holy Week. Maundy Thursday is remembered as the time Jesus ate a final meal with his disciples. The term Maundy comes form the Latin word mandatum which means “to give,” “to entrust”. You should recall, on this day, Jesus washed his disciples feet to illustrate humility and the spirit of servanthood. ! Good Friday, or Holy Friday is the day in which the church commemorates Jesus’ arrest, his trial, crucifixion and suffering, death, and burial. (If you are Baptist bred you should know about this day to a great extent). Often times we commemorate this day by attending Good Friday services in which the traditional use of scripture is based on the Seven Last Words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels. As we are approaching Holy Week, I wanted to provide you with study scriptures. Please see below: Lenton Season Study Scriptures

The largest chapter is located in the Southern region. Five of the top 10 largest chapters are located in the Midwestern Region. Three of the top 10 chapters are located in the Eastern Region (Mu Lambda included), and the other chapter is in the Southwestern Region. Six of the 10 had its membership reduced from a low of 3 members to a high of 19 members. Mu Lambda and two others had an increase in membership from a low of 1 to a high of five members. One chapter’s membership remained the same. It is also important to note that five of the chapters participated in the intake process, and three still had a decline in membership. My interpretation of the data is that Mu Lambda’s reclamation and retention efforts are working. Mu Lambda lost some members through attrition, but was able to reclaim 12 new brothers. I also surmise, based upon the data, that you cannot build your membership by intake alone. Mu Lambda has 425 brothers listed in Alpha Net (207 active, 33 unpaid, and 210 expired) – a concerted effort must be made to reclaim the 243 brothers with the same vigor we invested in making new brothers. I close by stating, we have done a good job of retaining and reclaiming brothers in 2013/2014, but there is more to be done. Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal, President
