If I cannot motivate the brothers of Mu Lambda then we have failed.
President’s Message I was wondering about the appropriate message to deliver for the beginning of the fraternal year. I could tell you Mu Lambda is the third largest chapter in Alpha. I could say two of the Jewels were founders of the chapter. I could say three general presidents were founders of Mu Lambda. I could say one supreme court justice; one mayor of the District of Columbia; three city council members of the District of Columbia; the author of Alpha’s history book; six general presidents; three eastern region vice presidents; one national treasurer, one national chaplain, and the chair of the World Policy Council were or are members. I could tell you of the 338 Alumni chapters, only 42 (six in the Eastern Region) have a house Mu Lambda being amongst the list. I could tell you Mu Lambda registered 27 brothers for the most recent general convention – more than the size of many of the chapters within Alpha. I could tell you Mu Lambda is comprised of brothers made in 87 different chapters. I could tell you Mu Lambda will be turning 90 on October 1

Brother Josh Harris from general headquarters attended the June meeting and told the brothers it is not what “we” think about Mu Lambda, it is what “they” think about Mu Lambda. They are those outside of Mu Lambda. I ask, do they know about Mu Lambda? Do they know why grown men pay money to belong to an organization? Do they know why we argue and fuss with one another and afterwards give the same brother a ride home? Do they know why we are in the schools helping young African American males when the young men act as if they don’t want our help? Do they know why we are in the community doing the work of Alpha Phi Alpha? I will speculate and say “no,” but it is our job to tell them. If we do our job of educating “they” – the rest will take care of itself.

I listen to the brothers of Mu Lambda. For years you have said you wanted an audit (an internal is complete and will be discussed at the September meeting – come ask Brother Chatman Young all of your tough questions). You said you want efficient meetings – you will receive the reports prior to future meetings (it is your responsibility to read the reports and come prepared to ask questions). You said you wanted more fellowship time – there was a lot of fellowship taking place during the summer. The business of Alpha will be handled timely so brothers will have more time to fellowship after the meetings. You said Mu Lambda didn’t care about the senior brothers or the younger brothers – there is a committee chair specifically for addressing the concerns of senior brothers. There is also a committee chair for addressing the concerns of younger brothers. You have raised concerns about intake – the subject of intake will be discussed at the September meeting (bring your questions and/or concerns to Brother Tony Wilson.) You said you wanted to see things to help the brothers become healthy – we will put some healthy alternatives on the menu for the repast and we also partnered with AARP for the Black Male Fitness Challenge.

With change comes growth pains – we need to hear the good and the bad. If you feel we are doing something good, share it with me and I will share it with the chapter. If you feel we are doing something bad, reach out to the committee chairs (brothers 40 and under should first go to the chair of the young professionals committee; brothers 65 and over should first go to the chair of the senior brothers committee; and all brothers are welcome to go to our ombudsman, Brother Joel Grey.) I want you to go to the aforementioned brothers so they can try to address your problem. I know there will be tough days ahead, but I will meet those days with an open mind and positive thoughts. I see brothers like Malcom Carter and Jacob Walker pushing a broom and hauling trash during our Clean the Block initiative. Brother Carter is a corporate executive running multiple chains of his franchise. Brother Walker is a government lawyer and military reservist. When I see those brothers greeting others and asking what they can do to help the chapter – who am I to complain. I see brothers like Kent Benjamin and Lucius Brown make unsolicited donations to Mu Lambda through the Combine Federal Campaign – who am I to complain. When I see brothers like LeRoy Lowery, Albert Cheek and Clyde Blassengale marching with Mu Lambda on an early Saturday morning – who am I to complain. When I see brothers like our vice president, Joseph Gibbs, giving 100 percent to Beta, Mu Lambda, and still finding time to address the details of running the chapter – who am I to complain. These are just a few brothers – there are countless others stepping up to make Mu Lambda a better chapter for us all. I might get weary, but I won’t complain. While I will do everything possible to hold Mu Lambda in the highest light – I will never ask any brother to put the chapter before the general organization, region, district, or area. With that said, I would like to challenge every brother in the chapter to serve on a minimum of one committee. I don’t want any brother to over extend himself (there will be a sign up list at the meeting). I also ask that all brothers start paying their 2014 dues immediately so Mu Lambda’s financial affairs can be handled without delay. Together we will make this an excellent fraternal year – this is your chapter, please make your voice heard. Fraternally, Brother Neal

Y
Mu Lambda, key number 111, the eleventh alumni chapter in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was chartered in Washington, DC on October 1, 1923. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of alumni Brothers, many of whom were initiated through Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to undergraduate Brothers and to continue the work of Alpha. ! Since its beginning Mu Lambda Chapter has been a bedrock in Alpha Phi Alphaʼs foundation. Itʼs 24 charter members included two of Alphaʼs founders - Jewel Nathaniel A. Murray and Jewel Robert H. Ogle. Shortly thereafter, Jewel Henry A. Callis joined them on Mu Lambdaʼs roster. Other charter members of Mu LAmbda were: Brothers Arthur Curtis, Merrill H. Curits, Victor R. Daley, Eugene L.C. Davidson, Arnold Donawa, Daniel W. Edmonds, Walter Garvin, William L. Hansberry, Charles H. Houston, Edward Howard, Joseph R. Jones, R. Frank Jones, Howard H. Long, John E. Lowery, Clarence H. enrolled over 235 male high school seniors in our rites of passage program, providing mentoring and college scholarships. A recent endeavor aids senior citizens by providing assistance with legal documents, income tax and will preparation and a driver safety education program in coordination with the AARP. We are also often joined by the Alpha Wives of Washington, DC, Inc. in the administration of programs. ! After situations like the Trayvon Martin trial and Voting Rights Act being gutted, I question if it is worth the effort to march and chant. Are we really making progress towards the realization of the “Dream”? But as a certain fraternity brother (my father Bro. This was a somewhat emotional day for me. I didn't not attend the original March on Washington in 1963 even though I was here in DC. It has always bothered me that I didn't attend, but in my defense, I had no idea the march would turn out to be the historic event it was and MLK, Jr. would become the movement's icon that he did. Yesterday, I was gratified I was there which allowed me to get my personal 'monkey' off my back 50 years later. Fraternally, Bro. Blassengale
I participated in this years March on Saturday August 24, 2013. What an amazing experience to see people of difference colors,ages nationalities, sexual orientations, religions, socieo-economic backgrounds coming together for Human Rights as well as Civil Rights. Growing up in the Jim Crow South, I have seen lots of changes in my life time. Yes, we have come a long way yet with the recent verdict in Florida and the Supreme Courts decision about voting we still have a long way to go. Kenneth, a Chicago native, earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Eastern Illinois University. He was initiated into Zeta Nu Chapter in April of 1985 and later joined the illustrious Xi Lambda Chapter seated in Chicago. Since relocating to the East coast in 2004, Kenneth was a member of Delta Lambda Chapter in Baltimore and is now a proud member of the illustrious Mu Lambda Chapter seated in Washington, DC. Kenneth's professional career began in 1990 and includes a stint in higher education as both an administrator and a tenured faculty member. He was also a licensed real estate agent and commercial real estate developer in Chicago. Kenneth now proudly holds a position with the United States government. Over the past fifteen years while working under the U.S. Treasury Department and the Department of Homeland Security, he has been assigned to posts in Detroit, Michigan and Washington, DC. During these assignments, Kenneth has assisted in protective efforts of several U.S. Presidents as well as foreign heads of state both domestically and abroad. Kenneth also assists in recruitment efforts in his current post in Washington.
Malcolm D. Jackson is EPA’s Assistant Administrator for the Office of Environmental Information and Chief Information Officer. In this dual role, Mr. Jackson is responsible for IT operations and security, information quality and collection, and access to environmental information including the Toxics Release Inventory. His leadership focus includes IT strategic planning and governance, IT investment management and government transparency.
Malcolm D. Jackson was appointed to serve this role by President Barack Obama. Prior to being confirmed by the Senate in June 2010, Mr. Jackson served as the Senior IT Business Unit Director of CIGNA Group Insurance. At CIGNA, he managed all IT aspects that Brother Malcolm D. Jackson supported short term disability, long term disability, life and accident insurance products and services. From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Jackson also served as the Senior IT Business Unit Director for CIGNA Insurance Corporate Business Functions. During this tenure, Mr. Jackson directed the development of IT applications for Human Resources, Finance, Legal and Public Affairs, and Investments. In addition, Mr. Jackson had IT oversight for Corporate-Owned Life Insurance, Reinsurance, and Settlement Annuities. Prior to joining CIGNA Insurance, Mr. Jackson held various positions in the areas of IT, engineering, marketing and general business management at Monsanto, Quaker Oats, General Dynamics, and Shell Oil Company. He has a broad business background which included consumer packaged goods, defense contracting, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the oil and gas industries. Throughout his career, Mr. Jackson has developed expertise in IT strategy, large-scale enterprise resource planning, performance metrics development, and business process re-engineering. Mr. Jackson currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Federal CIO Council’s IT Workforce Committee. Mr. Jackson was a Board member of the Children’s Literacy Initiative in Philadelphia and the Jackson State University National Alumni Association, where he chaired the membership committee. I am pleased to announce the selection of James McDonald as the new Assistant Regional Administrator for Management and Director, Management Division, EPA Region 6, Dallas, TX. With this appointment, James joins ranks of the Senior Executive Service. James brings to this position a decade of Agency leadership and service across multiple program offices, and is uniquely qualified to provide advice and insights on a range of administrative management and policy priorities. James began his career at EPA as an Environmental Protection Specialist in 1992 in EPA’s Office of Pollution, Prevention, and Toxics Substances. For the past two years, James has served as the Director in the Office of Environmental Information’s Planning, Resources and Outreach (OPRO). In OPRO, he was responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the Office including budget formulation and execution, human resources, program and policy/regulatory development, administrative program and project management, and information technology systems oversight. Additionally, he served as the Chief of Staff to Assistant Administrator and Chief Information Officer. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Staff, he served as the Director, Office of Administrative Law Judges (ALJ), Office of the Administrator, where he lead and managed ALJ’s administrative, management and policy functions, including budget/finance, strategic planning, human resources, information resources management, judicial hearing clerk, and administrative litigation docket. James also has extensive experience with congressional and legislative issues having worked in EPA’s Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations and as Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee of the 18th Congressional District of Texas. His program and regulatory experience includes serving in EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance for many years. James is a native of Mendenhall, Mississippi where he attended Alcorn State University earning a Bachelor degree in Political Science. He went on to earn a Master of Public Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Masters in Human Resources Management from Webster University. Additionally, he holds a law degree from the University of Florida. James will be a great addition to the Region 6 Leadership Team. I am excited to have James join the Region 6 family and look forward to him integrating the WE CARE Values into his leadership model as he builds a solid working relationship with all of our employees. Dr. William Malcolm DuBose, Jr. December 7, 1948 – August 19, 2013 Dr. William Malcolm DuBose, Jr. (affectionately known as “Mo & Billy”) was born December 7, 1948 in Dayton Beach, Florida. He was the second child, and only son, born to William M. DuBose and Thelma C. DuBose. He started elementary school in Daytona Beach and after moving to Pensacola, Florida continued his education in the public school system and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1965. After high school he attended college at Howard University in 1965. Following in the foot steps of his father who was a chartered member at Florida A&M University, Billy pledged Beta Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, in the spring of 1969. He was so proud to have the brotherhood in his life. Upon graduating with a degree in Physics in 1975, he then was accepted at Howard University College of Dentistry and received his DDS degree in 1981. He was then licensed and began to practice in the District of Columbia. Mo married Madelyn Warren in 1971 (currently divorced). Of that union the first child was welcomed, a son Nathaniel Sanfre. And three years later they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Kalimbi. Both children have been the joy of his life. His son now lives in Sweden and his daughter resides in the District of Columbia. Mo is also blessed with one grand child, Enon, a wonderful grandson who made him smile with pride. Mo’s career has been filled with adventure and excitement. He chose to pursue his dentistry career by sharing his lust for life and humanity. He specialized in the dentistry treatment of the disabled. He started his dentistry career with DC Department of Health. He was in partnership with the Community for Creative Non-Violence where he provided dental treatment for many years. He extended himself and was always available to help anyone who needed him. He also found time to tutor voluntarily most of the time to a variety of students. After retirement he continued to impart his knowledge and love for math by teaching in the DC Public Schools. Mo enjoyed enlightening children in the wonders of math and how to apply it to their everyday lives. He also enjoyed music by playing the saxophone and other woodwind instruments. He was very talented in the world of arts. Mo lived a rich and meaningful life. The funeral service for Bro. DuBose will be held at Wesminister Presbyterian Church on Sept. 8th, at2:30pm. The location of the church is 400 I Street, SW, DC 20024. Rev. Brian Hamilton is Pastor. Brother DuBose died in his sleep, was found by his housemate on the 19th. Brothers are asked to arrive at the church at 1:50pm. The Omega service will begin at 2:10p.
Also: Please pray for Brother Keith Hinnant and family. His great grandmother, Etta Pearson, passed. She lived to be 108 years old. June 7, 2011 Greetings  Brothers  of  Alpha  East,    I  hope  that  this  Memorandum  finds  you  both  mentally  and  physically  strong.   My  beloved  Brothers  of  AlphaEast,  I  write  you  today  to  discuss  the  Brand  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  Fraternity,  Incorporated.    On  August  28,  2011,  our  beloved  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  will  have  once  again  pulled  off  the  unthinkable.   The  world  will  stand  and  witness  the  dedication  It  is  not  enough  to  just  stand  on  the  shoulders  of  giants  and  continue  to  point.   There  are  a  number  of  chapters  &  brothers  that  are  taking  the  name  and  image  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  and  failing  to  hold  the  light  high  by  putting  their  own  spin  on  the  name  and  deciding  illegally  who  we  initiate  to  "Ęşrepresent"Ęş  the  fraternity.   That  is  a  clear  violation  of  the  oath  we  took  and  the  ritual  that  initiated  us.    We,  as  brothers,  need  to  protect  the  name  and  image  of  this  fraternity  that  was  founded  in  1906  and  is  greater  than  one  chapter  or  any  brother.   Therefore  going  forward  the  leadership  of  this  district  will  enforce  the  following  items  to  protect  the  image  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha.      Any  chapter  that  is  found  illegally  initiating  men  or  revealing  the  secrets  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  Fraternity,  Incorporated  to  any  non-Ââ€?‑–Ž–‹Ž›ȹÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂ?Â‘ÂŽČąÂ™ÂžÂ›Â™Â˜ÂœÂŽÂœČąÂ˜Â?ČąČƒ ‘˜œÂ?’—Â?Č„Čą Â˜Â›Čą ’—’Â?’ŠÂ?’—Â?ČąÂ?Â‘Â˜ÂœÂŽČąÂ?‘ŠÂ?Čą have  not  met  the  minimum  requirement  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  Fraternity,  Incorporated  shall  have  the  chapter  recommended  for  de-Ââ€?‑chartering  and  the  members  of  the  chapter  recommended  for  expulsion  Š—Â?ČąÂ?Â‘ÂŽČąČƒ ‘˜œÂ?Č„ČąÂœÂ‘ÂŠÂ•Â•ČąÂ‹ÂŽČąÂ›ÂŽÂŒÂ˜Â–Â–ÂŽÂ—Â?ÂŽÂ?ČąÂ?Â˜ČąÂ—Â˜Â?ČąÂ‹ÂŽČąÂŠÂ•Â•Â˜Â ÂŽÂ?ČąÂ–ÂŽÂ–Â‹ÂŽÂ›ÂœÂ‘Â’Â™ČąÂ’Â—Â?Â˜ČąÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?raternity  and  if  the Â Čƒ ‘˜œÂ?Ȅȹ™Ž›™ŽÂ?›ŠÂ?ÂŽÂœČąÂŠÂœČąÂŠČąÂ–ÂŽÂ–Â‹ÂŽÂ›ČąÂ˜Â?ČąÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?›ŠÂ?Ž›—’Â?Â˘ČąÂ‘ÂŽČąÂœÂ‘ÂŠÂ•Â•ČąÂ‹ÂŽČąÂœÂžÂŽÂ?ČąÂ?Â˜Â›ČąÂ?Š–ŠÂ?ÂŽÂœČąÂ˜Â?ČąÂ?‘Žȹ’–ŠÂ?ŽȹŠ—Â?ČąÂ?‘Žȹ brothers  that  allowed  this  process  will  be  sued  along  with  him.    Also  going  forward  monikers  that  disgrace  the  name  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  shall  not  be  accepted,  this  includes  but  is  not  limited  to,  Bloody,  Reckless,  Rambunctious,  Deadly,  Dangerous,  Death,  Killer  (Killa),  Merciless,  Psychotic  (any  variation),  Do  or  Die,  Punishing,  Wood  (or  any  variation),  Wreckless,  Sadistic  or  any  other  moniker  that  is  in  not  in  line  with  the  high  ideals  of  Alpha  Phi  Alpha.   Also  there  will  be  no  RED  in  chapter  letters  at  all  or  on  the  name  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  Fraternity,  Incorporated.   The  only  accepted  letter  colors  are  Black,  Old  Gold  and  White.   Finally  there  shall  be  no  use,  going  forward  on  Alpha  Phi  Alpha  Fraternity  advertising,  with  the  Gorilla  or  Apes.  Any  chapter  going  forward  that  has  paraphernalia  (those  initiated  after  June  30th  2011  for  paraphernalia  F ounders Henry A. August 6, 2013 Frederick Engram Pharaoh Step Team Alpha Phi Alpha Mu Lambda Chapter Dear Frederick, Step Afrika! is pleased to extend Mu LambdaÂśV Pharaoh Step Team an invitation to perform at the Step Afrika! Step Explosion on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Raymond Recreation Center. Our goal is to showcase a variety of teams from throughout the DMV and celebrate the art form of stepping at its best. All teams are asked to prepare a performance of no less than 5 minutes, but not to exceed 7 minutes. Performances must be family-friendly and are subject to review and edit by Step Afrika! for time and appropriateness. All teams must submit a single-paragraph bio and an outline of their performance (including music queues & special needs). Please be advised that lighting and special effects will be non-existent. The performance will be held during the day in a gymnasium so the focus will be on good, hard stepping, not on production values. Keep this in mind as you structure your performances. Your team will receive a performance stipend of $1000.00 immediately following the show on September 7th.
