Hello! I’m

ABOUT
PROFILE Hello! I am Vinay, a 4th year architecture student at the School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada. Since my childhood, and my father being a civil engineer, I’ve loved spending time on construction sites, which led me to pursue architecture. And my passion for photography and art, helped me look at architecture with a unique perspective. I’m ever curious to learn new things and they fascinate me. I hope to takeaway learnings for the rest of my life and meet new people with interesting views on my journey forward.

BRIEF
The brief was to first identify the heritage of our hometown, then find a suitable site and design a Heritage Interpretation Center for the city, which includes an exhibition center, an admin block, craft bazaar, temporary bazaars, OAT, an auditorium, workshops, food court and a souverin shop. The design has to emphasize the heritage architecture without replicating it. SITE/ CONTEXT
The Site chosen is on the bank of the river Godavari and adjacent to the old heritage bridge called The Havelock Bridge in Kovvuru, Andhra Pradesh. The Havelock bridge is a 130 year old railway bridge and was used as symbol of Rajahmundry and Andhra Pradesh. The bridge is now proposed to be reused as a Heritage Center for Rajahmundry. Hence, The site adjacent to the bridge and on the bank of the river Godavari was chosen for this design. HERITAGE CENTER
Rajahmundry is the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh, which has a rich and varied heritage. I’ve chosen few elements from in and around the city, that were lost and had a need to be interpreted. Those are 1. Ancient Ghats on the bank of river Godavari 2. Buddhist monasteries from around the city - Guntupalli, Bavikonda, Thottlakonda monasteries. CONCEPT
1 The Site chosen is on the bank of the river Godavari and adjacent to the old heritage bridge called The Havelock Bridge in
3
OAT and landscape elements are added in to emphasize the inner courtyard space.
2 The buildings are oriented in this way so as to block noise from city, and retain views towards heritage bridge and river.
4
All the spaces co-relate to form the inner courtyards, that is cut from the urban environment.
7
ADMIN BLOCK Includes Information Center, Ticket Counter connected to parking, Waiting Hall, a medical room, Office space and Meeting Room on first level.
CRAFT BAZAAR Inspired from the ‘Santha’ or Market streets of Andhra Pradesh, stalls and street system was implemented.
AUDITORIUM/ WORKSHOP The building has an auditorium on the ground level and workshop space on the second level for women to learn new arts/ crafts as a hobby or for their livelihood. The form of the building is derived for better acoustics and seating.
8
The Bodhi
OAT The squarish form of the OAT was inspired from the ancient OATs in Buddhist Monasteries in Nagarjuna Sagar.
GHAT/ OPEN SPACE The ghat was inspired from the ancient Ghats of Rajahmundry. It has trees and seating spaces for people to sit and enjoy the magnificent view of the Godavari. The open space is for people-interaction and can be used for temporary bazaars during festivals
FOOD COURT The River-view food court is elevated at a height from the Ghat, for better visibility. It has provisions for food outlets which is like an extensiono of the Exhibition hall
EXHIBITION HALL COMPLEX The Exhibition Complex contains The Exhibition hall, Souverin Store and a Waiting + Meditation space with a small water body with buddha statue in the center and a library of books related to Telugu Literature

Section 1
The spaces like Exhibition Center, OAT etc. which can compliment with the view of the river-side are placed near to the bank. ter is placed such that only the top floor has the view towards the river. The Food Court and the open landscape are visually at Section 2 shows how the built spaces surround and create a closed yet open space for interaction.

Story of the Exhibition Center CONCEPT The concept is “Walk of Enlightenment” A visitor starts at level 1, which is subtly dark with no openings towards river-side. After walking both level 1 and 2, visitor understands values of Buddhism, and then when he reaches final level, he experiences the wide open view of the river, which implies He got enlightened in the process.
ROOF The dome shaped roof is inspired from Bavikonda Buddhist monastery. The roof gives the impression of Stupa. The Chattri on the top is aesthetically buddhist and functional in stack effect.
LEVEL 3 The third level is VR/ AR system integrated level. It has VR and AR systems installed which provide information that is more interactive than general 2D screens. This is the only level which has an opening towards the river-side. The opening is a huge river-view window, allowing visitors to enjoy the magnificent view
LEVEL 1/ 2 The first 2 levels of the structure are exhibition halls containing artifacts, relics and information about Buddhism and the Buddha First 2 levels does not have any opening towards the river-side. The circular structure is supported by concrete vaults, which resemble the vault system in ancient buddhist monasteries.
12
The Bodhi
Story of the Craft Bazaar
The Craft Bazaar is inspired from old ‘Santha’ or Street Markets of Andhra Pradesh. The Craft Bazaar has a live-exhibit space, where the local artisans can work and sell. The circular platforms in the middle help artisans to work, also conveying the visiting tourists the effort that goes into making a piece of craft, which increase the sales and attract more visitors into the craft bazaar.

CONCEPT
1
2 The site is located amidst urban setting. The 2 adjacent roads have more commerical viability, hence commercial frontage must be given
3 In response to the climate of Kolkata, a huge courtyard is placed in residential block
The commercial space is designed in a way that it has most road frontage, and residential spaces are placed on top
4 Provision of more voids for air-flow and addition of all residential units

BRIEF
The brief was to design a village center for the tribal village Chompi, Araku Valley. The Village Center has to have a crafts exhibition center, Workshops for training tourists, a primary health care center and a veterinary hospital. The opposite site has an old primary school. The brief also was to redesign the school in the existing site. The school has to have 4 classrooms, a principal’s room, a staff room, a playground, a kitchen for cooking the midday meals for children and a store room.
CONTEXT
Chompi is a village in Araku Valley in the foothills of Kothavalasa hill. The villagers mainly thrive on farming. There are many handicrafts that does not have enough exposure in the village. The village also has a beautiful dance form called Dhimsa.
SITE

Proposed Site
Existing Village of Chompi
Kothavalasa Hill
CONCEPT The design of the village center must depend on the factors of 1. The design must be so simple yet elegant, such that it has to be viable to the villagers to build it themselves, yet it has to be elegant to attract the tourists. 2. The materials used has to vernacular to the place. Rammed Earth Forest Timber etc. 3. Accessibility to villagers (to PHC, veterinary hospital etc.) 4. Accessibility to tourists (to Exhibition Center, Workshop space etc.) 5. Vernacular style
25
SITE PLAN The whole site being amidst 3 roads and being at the entrance of the village is the best place in the village for the Village Center. The site is primarily zoned into 2 zones One part which is nclose to the junction/ entrance to the village, is reserved for the spaces accessible by the tourists, so that it has more frontage and attract more users. This is reserved for Exhibiton-cum-Museum space and Workshops for the tourists The other part which is in the behind site- which does not need frontage, but is located amidst 2 roads leading to village, making it accessible to the villagers and people from other villages. This zone is reserved for Primary Health Care (PHC) and Veterinary Hospital.
VETERINARY HOSPITAL It is located on the rarest end of the site such that the chaos and animals doesn’t effect the rest of the site.
