Approaches for Completing the Self-Analysis
• Social justice • Improvements at Tier 1, 2, or 3, or a combination
Keep a couple of things in mind.
• Try not to become discouraged when completing this self-analysis:
This includes when implementing structures related to MTSS or doing any work associated with improving the educational opportunities for all students. We’ve been there! We’ve led continuous improvement efforts and continue to do so. Do not beat yourselves up about how far you have to go, and don’t expect everything to happen immediately or all at once.
• Resist the urge to tackle multiple new initiatives: Choose wisely, do it well, and you can expect your well-chosen and well-implemented effort to have a dramatic impact on student learning.
Please note that the self-analysis addresses more than what the professionals in schools do. Educators are also prompted to analyze what they believe. Successful MTSS programs and high-performing schools are based on more than structures— they are based on cultures of high expectations and high levels of commitment.
We recommend that schools invite an external, discreet critical friend to act as a collaborative partner in this self-analysis. Members of the school staff should participate in the analysis, both because all staff members have knowledge of a school’s current reality and because all staff members must be committed to and involved in the collaborative work to fully complete the self-analysis.
Schools may select from several options when completing the self-analysis.
• Individual staff members independently complete the self-analysis and then submit their responses to be collated and prepared for analysis. • Individual staff members independently complete the self-analysis and then collaborate with a team to discuss results before submitting team responses to be collated and prepared for analysis. • Teams collaboratively complete the self-analysis and then submit their responses to be collated and prepared for analysis. • The entire school meets to complete the self-analysis, and then collates and analyzes responses.
