Synopsis
The recent landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad region was as much destructive as it was heart-wrenching. Visuals from the Nature’s fury, one more in many all across the country in terms of statistics, however posed very many challenges to rescue-workers from the very word ‘Go’. Aside from the state government’s limited resources, including in terms of human resources, which was often confined to the Fire Service and Police personnel, a national calamity of such a magnitude required Herculean efforts of an unimagined proportions that those initially on the site were unaccustomed to.
Pressed into service without much ado and delays, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) began rescue work in right earnest, but even accessing the affected areas, including where not long ago stood populated villages, became near-impossible without greater resources – translating as full-fledged peace-time efforts of the armed forces. Pressed into service thus within hours, the Southern Command (Dakshin Bharat Area) of the Indian Army rose to the occasion as this part of the country at least had not witnessed before.
The Madras Sappers construction of a Bailey Bridge is now what Army folklore is now being made of, both in the affected region and outside. And this was only one of the many effortless efforts of the well-trained and equally-equipped army personnel at Ground Zero of what could be loosely termed as ‘Operation Wayanad’. It is something that every Indian should know even more about than what was shown and seen on television news channels and YouTube channels.
