PROFILE M S Narayan, familiarly known as MS, shares these initials with a famous Indian sportsperson, but sadly, retired from cricket 25 years ago and is anyway not as talented or as good looking. MS joined Ponds in 1979 as a Management Trainee fresh from university and worked in marketing for a few years before being assigned to project roles investigating opportunities for export led diversification, something he enjoyed very M S Narayan much. In 1982 he led a team to the US to manage the transfer of a manufacturing facility from the US to India, and continued to manage this business with its myriad technical, commercial and people challenges for a number of years. MS was seconded to what was then Hindustan Lever as Branch Manager, Calcutta Branch in 1992. In 1994 MS decided to migrate to Australia, arriving in Sydney with his wife, two small children and two suitcases and roughly $500 dollars in hand-those were the days of foreign exchange controls- to begin a new life. His first job in Australia was as country manager for an Indian multinational in what is known here as the rag trade-ladies and men’s fashion, importing and distributing garments sourced from India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Dubai and the USA. In 1996 MS moved to the NSW Public Service where he has remained ever since, except for a couple of years sabbatical during which he headed planning and strategy in what was then Australia’s largest WAN outsourcing company, in those palmy balmy days before the tech wreck. Over the last twenty years or so MS has worked in the roads and justice portfolios – in areas such as planning and strategy, commercialisation, and innovation before moving to a NSW central agency. For the last ten years in this agency he has held roles in policy development and implementation particularly in the areas of Governance, Risk and Compliance. He is now working part time with responsibility for the State’s project assurance policy typically applicable to high risk high profile projects over $100 million. However, he has announced his intention to transition to retirement, and is very much looking forward to being able to spend more time with his grandchild and pursue his multiple interests outside of work.
