PROFILE OF THE SPEAKER

Mr Venky Nagan Venky Nagan is the Group C.E.O of Asmara International Ltd., Hong Kong, a progressive company in the domain of global-sourcing & exports of fashion apparel. With design, merchandising and production offices in the Far East, South Asia, MENA region and Barcelona, the Asmara Group provides value-added service to fashion brands and retailers in USA, Canada, EU, Australia and South Africa. Venky completed his B.E (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from BITS Pilani followed by an MBA from the IIM, Calcutta. He started his career with the Leather Footwear Division of Pond’s India Ltd which covered manufacturing, business development, merchandising and profit-centremanagement. After an 8 year stint at Pond’s he transitioned to the textile apparel industry by setting up a Formal Suits factory in Bangalore for the Gokaldas Images (Hindujas) Group. He then moved to Norwest Industries Hong Kong as an Executive Director handling pan-Asia sourcing operations. Norwest gave him an important move to be their Country Manager, Hangzhou (China) in the post-quota years. Subsequently Venky was the Apparel Sourcing Director at Shanghai for Sprandi International, a Russian brand. In 2009, Venky joined the Asmara Group as Country Manager – Bangladesh and is now the CEO and a managing partner of this Group. During his work from HK and China, he has physically traversed northsouth-east-west of China & Indo-China visiting factories and analysing the comparative advantages ! Over the last 35 years as a learner of the languages of business, Venky has tried to observe the Chinese culture, mindset and business practices closely and tries to understand how other countries can possibly bridge the trade-gap vis-à-vis China.

Ms Pallavi Aiyar Pallavi Aiyar is an award winning foreign correspondent and author. She has reported from across China, Europe, Indonesia and Japan contributing to publications that include, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The South China Morning Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Caravan, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Nikkei Asian Review, the Indian Quarterly and Granta. She is the author of the 2008 China-memoir, Smoke and Mirrors, which won the Vodafone-Crossword Popular award. Her 2011 novel, Chinese Whiskers, a modern fable set in Beijing, was published in the United States, Italy, Belgium and India. She is also lead author of a special Lonely Planet guide to China for the Indian market. Her book on contemporary Europe's crises, Punjabi Parmesan: Dispatches from a Europe in Crisis, is also published in the United States as New Old World: An Indian Journalist Discovers the Changing Face of Europe. Her latest books are Babies and Bylines: Parenting on the Move and Choked, an in-depth look at the crisis of air pollution in New Delhi and Beijing. Pallavi was selected by the World Economic Forum as a 2014 Young Global Leader. She is also a member of the Forum’s Global Future Council on Information, Media and Entertainment. Pallavi was awarded the 2007 Prem Bhatia memorial prize for excellence in political reporting for her dispatches from China. She served as advisor to the Confederation of Indian Industry on China-related issues. In 2010 she was recognized by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao for her work in furthering Sino-Indian relations. Pallavi has presented her works at literary festivals, universities, think tanks and foundations around the world including the Berlin, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bangalore, Beijing, Shanghai, and Ubud literary festivals, The German Marshall Fund India Forum, the annual conference of the Association of Asian Studies, The Asia Society in New York and Mumbai, Columbia University, The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, NIIT University in Neemrana, The London School of Economics, and IMD in Lausanne. Pallavi is a former Reuters Fellow at Oxford University (2007). She is also a Brains Trust member of the IMD-based think tank, the Evian Institute. Pallavi has first class degrees from Delhi University, Oxford University, the London School of Economics and the University of Southern California. She has a 2016 executive education certificate in Public Leadership from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. She is currently based in Tokyo, Japan.


Mr Mahesh Sriram I am Principal Consultant and Managing Director of I-India, a consulting firm focused on developing senior executives of MNC's to compete in emerging markets including India, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. As partner of TUCK School of Business at Dartmouth College, I work with world renowned faculty and thought leaders to adapt, co-create and implement Executive Education Programs in India and China. I have spent the last 14 years in "Reverse Innovation" - a practice for Multi National Companies to innovate for emerging economies and bring back the learning to developed economies. Reverse Innovation helps MNC's to align with the opportunity sandbox of inclusive capitalism, emerging market opportunities, bottom of economic pyramid and Global Leadership. I have co-created and delivered Leadership Programs for over a 1000 Senior Leaders of a dozen MNC's, including 2 fortune 10's, 5 fortune 200 and 2 of India's top 10. My interventions have helped over 75 MNC Global Leadership teams to innovate in India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. My exposure includes Banking, Health Care, Nuclear Energy, Oil and Gas, Aviation, Consumer Goods, Farm Equipments, Automobile, IT, TELCO, Retail, Water, Pharma and Non Profit. Prior to I-India I worked for economically inclusive and ecologically sustainable development of India through responsible tourism and community initiatives. I have worked for UNDP, Central, State Governments, Museums, Cultural Institutions, Non Profits and Industries across the world to create awareness, trigger policy initiatives and develop economic models to providing alternative lively hook for tribal communities and rural poor. I am an Alumnus of TUCK Executive Education.


Mr Y V L Pandit Mr Lakshminarayan Pandit is a highly accomplished business leader having held business leadership positions in reputed companies across several industries both in India and overseas. He is the founder, CEO of Pinnacle Leadership Consulting, which focuses on leadership development through coaching and mentoring, supporting leaders to reach the pinnacle of their potential; and offers Advisory services to companies on talent management issues such as CEO/CXO selection, high potential identification and succession planning. He was the Managing Director-India, for SHL, a global leader in talent management services, from 2005 to 2018, leading business growth of the company, and establishing SHL as a leader in providing talent management and leadership development solutions to reputed multinationals and Indian business groups. Prior to SHL, he held leadership positions, with P&L responsibility, in Unilever India, Arvind Mills, and Tata Teleservices. He worked in Asia Pacific region for nearly a decade. Pandit has been passionate about people development, particularly leadership development throughout his career. He has been a coach and mentor to several senior leaders and has been actively engaged in several CEO/Partner level assignments. Pandit is a certified coach with Professional Certificate of Coaching from International Coach Federation; and has an MBA from IIM (Ahmedabad).
