Project Collaborators The West End Project is a partnership between WGBC, a driving force in the community and Detroit Studio, a Lawrence Technological University Urban Design Studio.

Project Introduction To support “West End Tapestry,” a project to design bike stations in neglected parks for West End, a historic, African-American Detroit community. The stations will serve as multi-purpose parks connecting neighborhood assets and promoting arts, history, entrepreneurship, health, and sustainability. Using community workshops, Lawrence Tech. University’s Detroit Studio will gather public input and prepare designs for the stations, in partnership with the W. Grand Blvd. Collaborative, a key com-
munity group, and with the Detroit Public Library, the Motown Museum, Henry Ford Hospital, artists, historians, entrepreneurs, and the Detroit Planning Dep. The stations will feature bike racks, art installations, gardens, reading-rest areas, recycling receptacles, maps (highlighting local history, bike routes, and entrepreneurship opportunities), rainwater collectors, and solarpowered lighting. This project will model creative, healthy, regenerative community development for other neighborhoods.

Recreational parks, exercise stations, playgrounds, bike share stations, community gardens, amenity parks are strategically located to allow easy access to healthy options.

Overall Project Process and Major Project Activities
Summer 2015: Developed Preliminary Master Plan Concepts Spring 2016: Received NEA Grant Summer 2016-Step 1: Developed civic engagement strategies and processes (1) Identify the key stakeholders in the project community and explore what roles they can play in the master planning and multipurpose bike station design processes (2) Build on an overall community engagement framework developed (see Work Samples) prior to this submission, develop civic engagement strategies in collaboration with the stakeholders (3) Work out details with the community stakeholders for the participatory action research and engagement process and educational community design workshops
Fall 2016-Step 2: Conducted research on the target community’s existing conditions (1)Study the local assets, opportunities, and challenges of the study community
Spring 2017-Step3:Develop a concise master plan for the surrounding community areas (1) Review and assess the pros and cons of three master plan alternatives, each focusing on a particular theme (developed between 2013 and 2015 by the Lawrence Technological University Detroit Studio Community Outreach Program in collaboration with the project communities) (2) Integrate the three master plan alternatives in a balanced manner and incorporate their respective strengths into one plan (integrated master plan draft)
(3) Coordinate the master planning effort with the Detroit Future City Framework (the city’s new master plan framework) (4) Integrate and coordinate the master planning effort with the primary community partner, West Grand Boulevard Collaborative’s ongoing projects (5) Finalize the integration of the three master plan alternatives into one consolidated master plan and develop
Summer 2017-Step 4: Develop urban design guidelines and designs for multipurpose bike stations and other focus areas; finalize a master plan for the study community (1) Using the abovementioned consolidated master plan as a guide, execute Step 3 and start first with conducting best practice case studies that focus on pedestrian friendly street strategies and a bike transit system; social entrepreneurship and urban agriculture-based community development; blue and green infrastructure network-based community design; crime prevention through environmental design; and branding of creative, regenerative community via wayfinding systems, adaptive reuse, environmental art, and place making. (2) Conduct data-driven and evidence-based design research on building a healthy, sustainable, smart, resilient, and viable urban community (3) Conduct an in-depth site observation and investigation focusing on site/location typologies for multipurpose bike parks, urban agriculture, and blue and green infrastructure elements (4) Develop urban design guidelines for multipurpose bike stations according to the results of the abovementioned initial investigations from (1) through (3) (5) Complete design of West End Welcome Center and Historical Gallery, not only as a new major community anchor but also as the lead/main multipurpose bike station (6) Complete design of key intersections of West Grand Boulevard to incorporate key multipurpose bike stations (7) Complete design of all multipurpose bike stations (approx. 20; final number subject to the results of community input) according to the urban design guidelines (8) Produce the final report (consolidated master plan, urban design guidelines, and designs for all multipurpose bike stations)
