There is something about St Mary’ s
St Mary’ s
i
The site is located in West End, where minority people such as inverts, aboriginal people and immigrants have lived for a long time. These people brought diverse values to the area, which created unique culture and vibrant atmosphere. h
However, ongoing gentrification and urbanization is changing the community, people's living style, and townscape in the area. Responding to these historical context and the changes , I intended to redefine “soft edge”and“backyard” in this proposal and create the place where people can d enjoy both informal public elife and private time.

SITE CONTEXT
potential node for tourist
Soft edge When you walk along boundary street in West End, you will find yourself seeing people and being seen by people. These people are having lunch or a cup of coffee at tables and chairs in front of restaurants and cafes. In other restaurants, people can take a seat just in front of a large window and and watch pedestrians passing by. This quality of streets results in vague definition of inside and outside, and creates interesting gradient of human activities. In the proposed design, 3-meter-deep deck open to the street create relationships of seeing and being seen. In addition, the flexible space at the corner of the site and at the top floor are visible from the street and exhibit people's activity to the public.
Backyard Typical houses in this area have backyards. It is the place where people enjoy privacy, grow their favorite plants and vegetables, and hang their cloth. It also has a role as a place for socializing. People gain closer relationships by drinking and chatting in their private domains. What gives backyards this flexibility is their half-hidden quality. They are occupied by residents, but at the same time their view are shared with neighbors, and occasionally they turn into the place for informal public life. In the proposal, I intended to maintain these features of backyards. Each resident has his or her own private space where they can enjoy the backyard. It is not visible from the street, but once people step into the site, they will find the familiar gumtree standing toward the blue sky.
