Page 1

What have you learned from your audience feedback? In order to enter the products into the industry for the mass market, an initial feedback in order to obtain response and criticism on the trailer production, movie poster and front cover magazine had to be carried out. A random sample size was conducted with each individual of society has an equal opportunity of being selected. The results of the questionnaire are unbiased. The understanding of the perceptive audience would give the reflection of the tasks has been successful or unsuccessful. This gave a clear idea of the targeted market the productions are aimed towards achieved its goal and objective. I used this approach in order to gain views and attitudes from open questions and data from closed questions, this development helped in the knowledge acquired in building the foundation upon the productions. It is evident one may say the clarity of closed questions helped in respondents answering on a rapid pace. Also the data was easier on the standpoint of statistically depicting data. On the other hand open questions gave an in depth look and detail into the feedback on each of the products conducted during the duration of tasks. The questionnaire helped in developing ones opinions into critically understanding the tasks at hand, which was constructed. Once the questionnaire data was collected and assembled, this would be analysed via Microsoft Excel from charts in order to see clearly a correlation or difference in the results. The data accumulated would develop the ‘needs and wants’ from the consumers watching and reading these pieces of work, for the teenage-young adult marketplace the tasks are targeting. Feedback responses general perception: Feedback response: The title of needs to change to a thriller convention in relation to the film/ needs to be bigger. In receiving responses twenty males and females with the age group mostly consisted of the age range of 10-39 year olds answered my questionnaire. In order to receive feedback on the magazine many variations of strengths and weaknesses about the production were relevant. The main aspect of question nine helps gives improvement areas upon the production of the magazine, challenging the ‘magic bullet theory’ (Pieter Jacobus Fourie, media studies: institutions 2001) Fourie“ giving their personal views on the subject matter helps establishes the target market”, understanding the codes and conventions. The feedback on the aspects of the first title needs to form to the generic codes and conventions of a thriller/horror. Another persons perceptive gave an insight into understanding the key areas of improvement, looking at the font analysis again and presenting this to the respondent upon the IPad they reviewed each aspect upon the fonts and most agreed the second font called ‘My Bloody Valentine’ helped give and create an eerie atmosphere, scary feel and mood in keeping with the genre. The respondents responded in cooperating the font in the colour blood red would be prominent to the consumer instead of an transitional black colour which doesn’t noticeable.

First draft

Final Draft

In creating the first draft of the magazine, I tried to keep the look classy by using the font ‘Keep Calm’ as like other competitors such as ‘Film magazine’ but receiving the criticism helped define the publication reflecting the image parallel to the movie title helped make the font stand out from the page and from the feedback pointed out helped give an professional aural upon the magazine in accordance to the genre. It should be noted magazines such as ‘Movie’ uses this convention in order to display and heighten the look of the magazine, this was effective in receiving this and changing the look and feel. This helped to understand the market better, the needs and wants from the target audience. Ideas were needed to change aspects this gave me concepts and viewpoints in changing other areas of the magazine and to in accommodate this to other characteristics and features on the front cover.

Final Poster

Receiving responses from twenty people gave an insight into improving the poster, giving both males and females a critical perceptive into the analyses. The feedback from the target audience helped define the fonts for the tagline on the poster. The participating feedback from characteristics of the font ‘Caviar Dreams’ which was presented in my initial research and ideas upon placing this on the posters first draft, on reviewing this the overall understanding is the style of writing doesn’t conform to the genre in which the movie is promoting. Showing a list of fonts in my initial research the font that was considered is ‘Beautifual Horror’ this is in reflection upon the trailer. The style of writing is hand written gave the ambiguous feel and an illusion of creepy and spine chilling mood. Maria Pramaggiore (Film: a critical introduction, 2005) states the “style of font”……… “is an important factor in developing a task” also she states this should “co-inside with the audiences expectations”, after reading and developing the knowledge I created and depicted this final font in my product as seen below.

Taglines

Also points which were pointed out was the placement of the tagline which the audience gave viewpoints in placement on the top page, This was more presentable and readable clearly to the audience. Unlike the first as this felt congested to the target audience.

Title fonts for Poster

In the feedback from twenty people upon the poster this gave a viewpoint into giving direction in giving the poster a different style, following the generic codes and conventions of an thriller/horror, the image reflecting the title which creates the title to stand out from the page, The colour effect on the final piece meant behind the white font helped in making the blood effect helped define the genre. The font ‘Bloody Valentine’ from the feedback gave a frightening, creepy reflection on the writing style this achieving its goal and objective in the final piece. The feedback gave knowledge and supportive decisions in altering the work for the intended marketplace.

Sizes of fonts – larger

Feedback Response: Questionnaire results for magazine Which aspect of the magazine needs improvement? The mask head needs to be larger In the audience feedback for the Masthead this become evident there was situations and problems in displaying this on the front cover. The typical convention noticed by the respondent was the lack of size that wasn’t clear in reading, but also people have stated the placement behind the main image like other competitors on the market. But I have stated the magazine is a new concept on the marketplace a non-restricting name of the magazine to consumer is more presentable and a marketing strategy in brand association psychological for understanding the name, this however breaks the generic norms and traditions of the industry and society. The placement was acceptable and bold to the reader also pointed out was the colour this stood out from the page. Another point which was hugely flavoured was increasing the size help define the magazine, and further developed in a positive direction. The name of the magazine Reel meaning the films paper in which the movie is printed on, Reel is parallel to and traditional aspect of the film industry for the readers of the demographic 15-39 year olds. The initial situation I was concerned about was did the name of the publication was understood by the intended audience, the public perception from most of the younger generation knew the comprehended words spoken which gave me the gratification.

Main Image Poster

Arranging the photo-shoot I decided to look upon other images from competitors, Film and Movie publications was key in understanding these aspects of camera work and angles. Most have used medium to close up shots, a feature of the subject taking most of the frame often the actor is directing looking directly to the reader. This

often shows and amplifies facial expressions displaying emotion and mood of the person on the front cover. The audience felt during the stages of shooting on the camera the medium close up (MCU) shot was effective as the reader is drawn to the characters feelings. The critical aspect of the image was not clear and this was a concern, many have commented on the picture was a similar image to the magazine and not creative or in depth to other counterparts in the industry, many commented on movie posters such as Screams and Friday the 13th, this was taken into account and many stated the image should reflect this in order to convey a powerful yet bold image to the audience. By this statement an improvement in the image clarity needed improvement, this response was effective in re-shooting the image and conveying a picture in a close up, covering the most of the page, editing on photo shop was key in developing and fading two faces side by side upon the main image in the middle. The main picture was clear and created tension and suspense from the feedback response.

Magazine Main Image

Questionnaire feedback

“The overall perception the initial piece of image of the front cover was this image was satisfactory but more emphasis on the image aspect needed attention. The change in contrast and saturation was needed in order to give and be a bolder and eye catching to the reader buying the magazine. The image was typical of a thriller in its effect of highlighting the movie genre and the thriller category. The font cover of this magazine consisting of a very close up shot image reflects to the audience is instantly. The face aspect of the image emphasizes and portrays a dark and scary atmosphere. The image needs to be bolder in colour saturation to stand out.” The amount of knowledge I have gained from society responding on the main image helped into developing a high standard of work, perception was positive, the links from the main image of the villain into the trailer to the poster and the magazine is a parallel communication to the audience. The idea of the differences from the poster and magazine pictures was effective from a median close up to a close up, this image of the magazine helped communicate the message of the genre of horror and thriller effectively. But having a positive response I still wasn’t satisfied I wanted to develop the image further differentiating itself to others in the marketplace. Making the brand stronger and unique to my competitors. I used Photoshop CS5/CS6 in order to manipulate the image on the front cover. Copying the picture and using a white effect displaying this behind the main picture on the front cover helped to define the magazine making it a bold. It should be noted feedback helped in improving colour saturation making the image stand out. The image with the shadow besides the image gives the illusion of a two-face villain good/bad thus portraying to the audience effective imagery was presented. The responses of the blood underneath the eye helped questioned the audience, people has stated “blood has drawn from victims” and the villain is crying out for help” deep connation around this effect. The mise-en-scene from the clothing aspect depicted a normal typical teenage male the identity is un-mask giving a suspenseful image, this was successful in the aural of the perception.

Questionnaire results for magazine Questionnaire results There was some criticism which was highlighted in the magazine colour use which I would take on board and improve, a few have stated the colour is not dark enough and a fade would be give a better overall look giving an professional feel, I would take these problems and improve my final initial piece into the final product. Criticism was presented with the magazine background with the colour used in the initial draft feedback into improving and adjusting the colour and changes were presented upon Photoshop this gave me a chance to blend a grey with light black effect this helped in connoting an emotionless, dull, dingy, depression colour in keeping to the horror/thriller. The colour in the back into the final piece also gave a professional look. The feedback upon the poster, In depicting and reflecting upon the colour scheme of the work conducted for the development of the work, the analysis from others have had considerable guidance into forward thinking, this has taught me into the parallels of interlinking the background colour scheme for both tasks. The darker texture helped in giving a gloomy and monotone appearance, generic into an thriller/horror genre.

Layout for poster

The respondents commented saying the layout was effective, the positing of the title and tagline/slogan was reflective to others in the marketplace such as Scream this gave an insight in placement, but a few people on the questionnaire analysis of the target market have stated the first draft ‘silence is the most powerful scream’ is unorganised and congestion with the title below this and was clearly un-readable but the feedback of placing this at the top of the page helped in giving a added sense of professionalism to the work conducted. This helped communicate the message noticeably. Shows the changing ideologies of posters is changing and evolving through new concepts and techniques offered in these companies, the poster conducted broadens the horizons on furthering the codes and conventions of an typical horror/thriller, with the image and manipulating the faces into three.

Layout for magazine

Questionnaire analysis - feedback The aspects of the magazine from the cover lines need to stand out and layout sorted out. The cover lines content entices the reader into looking at the magazine. The language on the front cover demonstrates the clear target audience of 15-30 year olds. Aspects upon the layout of the magazine were of importance helped in displaying front cover in professional standards the response was it was un-organised, didn’t follow the traditional structure of a publication. The conventional method of placing the sentences/ wording on the left hand side was more appropriate. This would help entice the audience to view the publication to the reader. In re-doing the task placing a box and the sentences on left gave a proficient feel achieving its overall result. The cover lines wording was enlarge thus making it clear for the reader, the feedback on the wording was open-ended helping draw the reader to the magazine and buying it. The size should be bigger in diameter to stand out, this feedback would be taken into account and be incorporated into developing the final piece. The cover lines entice the audience into buying the product but the style and layout should be more improved, one stated the use of boxes and circles in standing out. This would be noted and improved.

Trailer In understanding the trailer helped in furthering my knowledge from the perceptive of the audience for males and females aged 15-35 years old. The general response from the target audience was the film trailer was efficient during certain aspects of scenes, but feedback was an increase of scenes from various angles and shots, which I had to take in consideration in order to expand and improve the production, these comments were written in the comment section but

gave an insight into improvements. One stated the footage needed to widen the aspects of gripping/spellbinding footage. But increasing the scenes vastly would become an opening scene thus a strategic method of keeping the confides of the duration of a film trailer of 2.00 minutes was taken into account. An increase of dramatic scenes heightens the audience to be on the edge of there seats, this allowed me to re shoot and make frightening scenes, with quick, fast pace editing upon cuts in scenes and a sound track which reflects on the chase/ killing scene. Both genders had similar viewpoints from the feedback the male and female demographic stated the film trailer was appropriate for the age group of 15 years and over. The visualizations shown were in proportion to a thriller/horror film trailer. The use of wording was as important if the target market would understand words. The positive aspect which differentiated itself from other trailers is the use of ‘U’ (You) colloquial language used, slang words helped target the market for young adults and teens which the market understood and conformed to understanding. Language has changed during the 21st century and the use of words people have used in text messaging and speech in the modern day era, conforming to this language helps reflects this movie trailer to the audience. Another criticism was the lack of guidance in captions in telling the story with wording/dialogue in the trailer like many competitors in the industry. In using IMovie I after used a range of inserted text in enabling to communicate with the viewer thus understanding the aspects of the movies plot, not confusing direction of the film trailers main purpose in enticing the audience to the cinema. Elsaesser (Film theory: an introduction through the senses, 2009) theory in the perspective of the attention span and feeling upon audience, stated the type of suspense which is evoked can change dependent on the levels uncertainty and doubt. Silence is Golden in the sense of the respondents commented on the level doubtfulness which was presented and these cause of concerns gave the achievement in heightening the level of tension for the audience.

In terms of camera, Low camera angles were understood from the perspective target market people have stated the scene shown dominance and power of the villain character and the victim looking vulnerable. These film techniques have achieved its aims and objective in terms of emphasising scenes typical generic conventions used in horror/slasher/thriller films. Also the use of a point of view shot gave the audience the idea to show how he controls the vulnerable victim, the sense of dominance is reflected, this allowed me to use other various shots to display this feeling from the chocking of the victim to the extended chase scenes in the trailer. The mise-en-scene was another aspect in which was discussed many have thought the dress code was appropriate in displaying the villain from the dark clothing gave a cold, dark and stale look. On the other hand the victim is portrayed as a normal innocent young teenager studying at college. The audience’s perception conceded with the Kress theory in seeing the generic codes and conventions of a thriller/horror, the reflection from the response understood and identified the typical uses of clothing in this genre I am targeting the movie trailer towards. But I tried to further these conventions by not following the rules in terms of props other movie trailers use of a blade, knife or gun is used in all other successful movies such as Scream (1996) depicted by Wes Craven I tried to not abide by these conventions and use the hand as a weapon, changing the dynamic in terms of the norms and values of the industry.

Conclusion: The general perception upon the target audience on the tasks conducted was the products were distinguished compared to the competitors in the marketplace from the trailer to the magazine front cover and the poster. Nevertheless progression of the product could have been furthered if I was to do the project over, the amount of time was narrow I had during the stages of editing in the trailer. On the whole the trailer, poster and magazine followed the generic thriller and horror codes and conventions successfully, but also it should be noted challenged these conventions this throughout the stages of development. The analysis into the final project for all the tasks was its fits in the generic codes and conventions of a

thriller/horror, the overall feel for the tasks of the magazine, poster and trailer were at a professional look and style. The audience feedback upon the tasks helped in developing and further my knowledge into targeting the intended audience.
