History & Reflections
Pride in your Town
The late historian of Central Queensland, Dr. Lorna McDonald wrote many books on the history of Central Queensland and includes much on Mount Morgan. The following is the first paragraph in her book “Rockhampton” published in 1981 on Mount Morgan and the district. Marvellous Mountain:The Mount Morgan Story. Mount of Sorrow. The story of Mount Morgan began millions of years ago in a geological sense, but the discovery in recent times of a dinosaur’s footprint on a rocky hill adjoining the mine, and of a fossilized ichthyoid (fish) in a mine excavation, show that the area was once the habitat of ancient living creatures. Aboriginals of the Bayali tribe also hunted in the hills and valleys thousands of years before the first Europeans crossed the range in 1853. About one hundred years have passed since white man first began chipping the strange black stone on the summit of the mountain, but by 1979 where the ancient landmark once stood there was a quarry 326.14 metres deep. The mountain of gold, only thirty-eight kilometres south-west of Rockhampton, kept its secret for another twenty four years after the Canoona rush. This seems strange as Rockhampton was known to be the centre of extensive gold bearing country which had been worked for most of those years. Many miners and fossickers roamed through the Dee Ranges before and after the proclamation of the Crocodile Creek Gold Field in 1866, but they were looking for alluvial gold and even those who later admitted walking over the mountain top did not recognise the precious metal in the strange black boulders. “Anyone to have suggested the possibility of finding gold in a lump or ironstone would have been laughed to scorn for his verdant notions about mining” wrote Sykes in 1893. That is exactly what did happen to the several men who tried to interest mining “Experts” in the stone prior to 1882, but nature played an ironic trick on all those who dismissed the black stone with its minute flecks of glistening metal as fools’ gold. In June 1882 the Morgan Brothers did heed the story of gold on Ironstone Mountain (as it was called then) and so became its official discoverers, naming their claim Mount Morgan as to prove the point. Within five years of their claims being pegged, the mine was world famous and soon to be proclaimed the most wonderful discovery of modern days. At the same time there were men and women who already knew it as the Mount of Sorrow, while others were to experience this later. “The Mount of Sorrow was a tragic find for a number of people” wrote the son of an original partner in the Mount Morgan Syndicate, “It broke some of Rockhampton’s best citizens”. Discovery. “It is to the writer of fiction in the future that what must be termed the mythology of Mount Morgan must be left… the tale of the finding this marvellous mountain of rich ore, with all its manifold shades of fact and fiction, pure romance and semi-truths, is not within our present scope”….William H. Dick, editor of the Rockhampton’s Northern Argus, made this comment in 1887 in one of his earliest publications about the mine. Because the principals included powerful, respected local men already on the way to becoming millionaires he could not be more explicit, but as everyone already knew, the discovery of the ore body parodied the “Apple Pie” nursery rhyme. Mackinlay found it; Gordon revealed it; Morgan mined it. William Mackinlay was the first man to be profoundly affected by the gold of Mount Morgan. Others saw and handled the auriferous stone on its summit, but he appears to have been the first to realize that is contained gold and to receive an income from it. In the end the gold was the cause of great sorrow in the Mackinlay Family. Think Clean Be Tidy

Mount Morgan High’s Grand Final Sweep Last Wednesday night 6th September, the three Mount Morgan High School Rugby League teams headed to Browne Park to contest their grand finals. The Juniors, Years 7 and 8 played Heights College. They went out to a 26-6 lead at half time and went on to win 42-18. Best on the ground was Josh Grange and he was well supported by Callum Van Drumel, Zeypher Jacobsen and Latrell Hayden.. this completed an undefeated year for this team coached by Jason Grange.

In the Intermediate game, years 9&10, Mount Morgan High took on TCC. (The Cathedral College). This is a division where Mount Morgan have had difficulty getting numbers. Three year 8 students, Josh, Callum and Latrell filled in to give us the required numbers. Montell Oram led his side outstandingly so that by half time he and Josh had scored, the score was 18-4. However 2 tries to TCC in the second half made for a very close match until Locky McKay and Josh Grange scored late to seal it 28-16. Man of the Match was Nick Van Drumel and he was well supported by Montell Oram, Josh Grange, Kye Leisha and Lachy McKay. The Open played Yeppoon State High. Yeppoon got off to a flying start, leading Mount Morgan 8-0 after sixteen minutes. Tyler Toby scored a try just before half time to see us down 4-8 at the break.

In the second half Hayden Campion scored after 9 minutes to even it up at 8-8. It wasn’t until seven minutes from full time that Locky Buckton scored and Tyler Toby converted to hit the front for the first time, 14-8. With four minutes to go Lane Evans scored an incredible individual try from 35 metres out, with Tyler again converting to finish 20-8. Player of the game was Reece Jones and every player in the team played extremely well against a very strong Yeppoon side. A large crowd of supporters was on hand and the roof of the grandstand was almost raised by the cheering. Well done Mount Morgan High and coach Mr Kevin Crawford. Some spend whole lifetimes searching for happiness. But whether you’re out on the water any chance you get, or haven’t been out for longer than you’d care to admit, you already know the secret to happiness is the simplest thing of all… fishing. It’s the freedom and the fresh air, the silence of waiting for a bite that’s eons older than any ‘meditation’. The adrenalin rush of reeling in not just a catch, but the catch. The time spent connecting with your oldest mates and your littlest of little ones.

On the 11th of September 2017 the team at the Railway Museum were delighted to receive a visit from the Brisbane Ford V8 Club. The Group have been travelling Queensland in their V8 Fords ranging from the 1930’s to 1960’s models. After a visit to the local bakery and a tour of the town the V8 Ford Club headed on their way to Biloela then will be stopping at Miles on their way back home to Brisbane. The V8 Fords, including a 1938 Ford Truck, 1934 Ford Roadster and a 1951 Ford Coupe, had been fully restored to their former glory . Unfortunately they could not stay in town for the Annual Motors of the Mount Show coming up on the 24th of September but said they would be sure to visit again in the near future.
History at the Historical Railway Barbara and William Lester, (pictured left), from McCrae in Victoria visited the Tourist Information Centre on Thursday 7th September 2017. Barbara is the Granddaughter of William Aplin Esq. who was the Principal and Secretary of the Mount Morgan Technical College from 1916 to 1928. Naturally a visit to the Mount Morgan High School (formerly The Technical College) was on the agenda for Barbara. A photograph of her Grandfather is on the wall in the stairwell at the School. Barbara was delighted to be given information on William’s children, in particular the boys, Alex, George, Graeme, John and William Malcomson who attended the Boys School in Mount Morgan.
News from Dee River Oldies
Everyone enjoyed the Pensioners’ Seniors’ Week Morning Tea, held in the School of Arts on Tuesday, August 15th. Quite a few prizes were won in the Multi- draw, and we didn’t do too badly with the Trivia questions either. On Wednesday August 30th, we had 65 people attend our Damper at the Mount Morgan Dam for Senior’s Week. (See picture bottom right). We were sorry not to have our Long-Stay patients from the Hospital visit again this year due to the Flu, but it was nice to have members from 60 & Better Rockhampton attend. As usual we had great entertainment from Bruce of “Sounds Good”, pictured top right with wife Jenny. The winners of the raffles on the day were Robert Cahill - 1st prize - $25 breakfast tray, and Rosemary Hoffman who doubled up and won both 2nd and 3rd prizes of two $20 breakfast trays. Our next meeting is Tuesday Sept, 19th, and the next morning tea is Wednesday Sept, 27th. Why not come and join us? For further details phone Margaret on 49 381 705.
LAC & QAS Afternoon Fundraiser
7
On Saturday the 9th September the Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) and the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) celebrated 125 years with a Multi Draw Afternoon at the Mount Morgan School of Arts. The Afternoon kicked off with a free sausage sizzle at 1.30pm. Cambo and Hamo provided the music while Debbie Rose Boutique showed off the latest in ladies fashions. The event was to raise funds for the LAC and all money raised is used to purchase equipment for the Mount Morgan Ambulance Station. Prizes were donated by Carol Stock and Heather Barker. Thank you to all who attended or assisted in any way. The LAC committee for 2017 is Brian Glover, Kerri Lodewikus, Lyn Thomas, Rosemary Izzard, Ruth Summers and John Goodwin. The Committee is working towards offering non certificate first aid courses in the New Year, which will equip participants with the knowledge to provide basic care until the Ambulance arrives.
Rodeo Horse Sports Fun Day
The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association held another successful Horse Sports Fun Day at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds on Saturday the 16th September 2017. In conjunction with the QAS and LAC celebrations of 125 years, the Queensland Ambulance Service has recognised the outstanding work of 38 officers and volunteers from across the region. In among these devoted people is Mount Morgan’s own, Graham Roberts. Graham received his award for 30 years of service. The love of the job, his family and the need to help those who need it most is what keeps him going.
Congratulations Graham!
Usually every second month young locals are given the opportunity to bring their horses along for a fun day. These events not only assist the Rodeo Assosiation to raise funds, it also gives the young people of Mount Morgan another activity for their spare time at the week-ends.

Mount Morgan community invited to name Streetscape elements
Mount Morgan residents are being asked to help name four new seating shelters which are being installed on Morgan Street as part of the $1.9 million revitalisation of the CBD. Deputy Mayor and Parks Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the idea was well received by residents at a meeting held in the town last week. “The shade shelters are going to reflect the local shop facades which will link the new works with the existing historical architecture in the main street. Each shelter will feature a name which is of significance to the Mount Morgan community. This is an excellent way of helping this project tell the rich history of Mount Morgan,” Cr Rutherford said. “There have many a number of influential people who were pioneers of Mount Morgan and we would love to hear from as many residents as possible with their suggestions. Some of the names put forward so far include William Mackinlay, Walter and Eliza Hall, Calliungal, Morgan Bros., Gordon Bros and Bungoona.” “The project is at a really exciting a bit like a duck on a pond – calm on the surface but busy underneath as crews have been finalising all the underground infrastructure and works.

The Orange Dot Movie Review
By Larry at Fox Video
COLOSSAL
Not only is it good, but it’s fresh and new - unlike anything I’ve seen before. Many romances are rewritten romances...Science fiction films are often rewritten westerns, and some westerns are rewritten Japanese Samurai movies. However, we can’t think of a single story we’ve seen or read that resembles COLOSSAL (although I’m sure they’re out there somewhere, they must be rare), and what’s more it is beautifully written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, and very well played by Tim Blake Nelson, Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey). Gloria is an ordinary woman who
likes to party. After losing her job and being kicked out of their apartment by her boyfriend she is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown... Back to her childhood friends, like Oscar. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying the Capital City of South Korea, Seoul (like the poor guys don’t have enough monsters to deal with), Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control Gloria decides to share the knowledge of her discovery with her friends, and then she must determine why her
seemingly insignificant existence has such a COLOSSAL effect on the fate of the world.... And should she have told Oscar? COLOSSAL is rated M for “mature themes, violence and coarse language”, and that’s about right, but it’s only just north of a PG13 to my mind so make your own judgement based on your knowledge of your own kids. Running for around one hour and forty-five minutes, COLOSSAL was truly a breath of fresh air... Loved it!
