UPGRADED RAZORBACK ROAD OPENS

Mount Morgan’s Razorback Road opened on Saturday, 1 February, following four months of major reconstruction works to improve the road’s safety and accessibility.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said he is thrilled to announce the completion of the project and the resulting improvements.

“This project has involved significant excavation, earthmoving and road

reconstruction and the difference it has made to the safety of this road is phenomenal,” Mayor Williams said.

“The Razorback has long been a safety concern, particularly due to its narrow lanes and steep incline, and I am confident that drivers will be very pleased with the changes that have been made over the last few months.

“Roughly 1,000 dump truck loads

of earth have been removed from this site to reduce its gradient and more than 800 metres of new road added.

“It’s now much wider, expanding from its the original width of 7.5 to 8 metres to between 9 and 9.6 meters, with a one metre shoulder added on each side.

“The sharp curve you’d previously

Continued on Page 2

encounter at the top section of the road has been flattened, and the incline of the road is now less steep in this section with up to 2.5m of vertical material removed.”

Mayor Williams highlighted that safety improvements also include additional signage and the installation of guardrails as well as improved drainage and the renewal of six culverts.

“I’m really proud of the work that has gone into this project and that Council could deliver this for the community,” Mayor Williams said.

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said a sincere thanks goes to the Mount Morgan community for their patience while works were underway.

“The upgrade works were conducted in conjunction with the Mount Morgan Water Supply Project, allowing us to address the road upgrade and improve driver safety in the long term,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We understand that completely closing this road and having the Range as the primary route presented a challenge at times, and we greatly appreciate the community’s support.

“It’s wonderful that we can now reopen the road partially and whether you drive the Razorback daily or pass through occasionally, I am confident you’ll be really happy with the improvements.”

Minor finishing works, including line marking and pipeline works will be completed over the next two weeks with some sections of Razorback Road reduced to single lanes during this time.

The Razorback Road improvements were funded through Council’s Capital Works Program and carried out by local business Schwarz Excavations.

Have youy say on Mount Morgan’s Tourism Future

The Grand Hotel Management and Staff would like to thank its customers for their patronage over the Christmas, New Year and Australia Day holiday period.

Here are some pics from our Australia Day Celebrations:

DAM FINE CELEBRATIONS

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan is very happy with the community response to the Family Day event organised at the Big Dam to celebrate Australia Day.

The weather was kind with the morning of activities keeping many children engaged and having fun, which was the main intent of the event.

The children’s favourite, “The Petting Zoo”, was particularly busy, while the Climbing Wall and the Jumping Castle soaked up lots

of energy from the young ones. The RRC Animal Welfare Booth also attracted much attention. Di Coburn and her voluntary group of musicians performed throughout the morning and created a very appropriate background for such an Australia Day celebration.

The Rotary Club catering worked out really well, with the Damper and Syrup, Sausage Sizzle and Drinks being completely exhausted right on closing time.

While a lot of work and planning

went into the event, Rotary Club members were rewarded with many complimentary comments from attendees.

The Rotary Club wishes to express its appreciation to the Rockhampton Regional Council for its sponsorship of the event, and the attendance by a number of Councillors on the day.

The Club also thanks Mount Morgan Promotion and Development for their support in promoting the event.

WIND FARM WORKS CONTINUE

Early construction works are continuing on Aula Energy and CS Energy’s Boulder Creek Wind Farm in central Queensland.

Following work beginning on site in late 2024, the main activities over the next three months will be civil earthworks, external road upgrades and translocation of protected cycads in line with the project’s environmental management plan.

Civil earthworks are being carried out to establish a temporary compound, hardstand area, site sheds and internal access tracks. Offsite, road upgrades are being completed on sections of Arthur Street and Flaggy Creek Roads.

Weed removal and management activities are underway in the cycad recipient site, ready for when the first cycads are moved there in the coming weeks. The project will relocate Cycas megacarpa in the development footprint to the project’s dedicated offset management area to ensure long term protection of the species.

Approximately 40 people are working on site and this will increase as construction ramps up later this year. Local businesses and individuals who would like to be involved are encouraged to register their interest through the dedicated industry network page https:// bouldercreekwindfarm.icn.org.au or the project website https://www.bouldercreekwindfarm.com.

Members of the local community who have a question or would like to talk about the project, please contact us at info@bouldercreekwindfarm.com.au or via our toll-free number 1800 983 637.

The Boulder Creek Wind Farm will consist of 38 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 228 megawatts when it begins operating in 2027.

Above: The small excavator undertakes weed management within the cycad recipient site and below this cycad will soon be relocated to the dedicated offset management area.

Help clean up our patch of Australia

The 2025 Clean Up Australia Day is being touted as the “biggest ever clean-up” and Mount Morgan Promotion and Development [MMPAD] Inc is inviting you to join in this year’s clean-up which will be held on Sunday, 2 March 2025.

The “Big Dam Clean-up” will start at the Mount Morgan Railway Station at 8 am on Sunday, 2 March and progress along Byrnes Parade and River Street to the No. 7 Dam and the town’s two lookouts. If volunteer numbers and time permits, it may be possible to clean other sites as well.

MMPAD President, Mr John Steinberger said Clean Up Australia Day provided an opportunity for all members of the community to participate in beautifying the Mount Morgan community.

“Even if you can only spend an hour on Clean up Day, every little bit counts,” he said.

Following the clean-up there will be a sausage sizzle at the dam for the volunteers.

This initiative started as the inspiration of one man – Ian Kiernan, AO. An avid sailor, Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered in the oceans of the world.

Taking matters into his own hands, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends.

This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the local community to get involved and make a difference…and so Clean up Australia Day was born in 1990.

In the past 34 years, 22 plus million Australians have donated their time as part of Clean Up Australia activities, amassing over 38.5 million volunteer hours.

If you would like to participate in the Clean Up Australia Day, you can do so by contacting MMPAD on 4938 2312 or email mmpad@mountmorgan.org. au.

SES NEWS

Mount Morgan State Emergency Service would like to wish the Mount Morgan and surrounding communities a Happy New year.

As you would know during the last few weeks we have seen several storms come through and around our community and in the coming weeks we could see the formation of the first Cyclone in the Coral Sea. The current weather has the potential to be a very active season, so do not become complacent. Make sure your property is storm and cyclone ready. Clean gutters, check roofing is secure, trim trees and remove or secure anything in the yard that could become a missile. Most importantly make sure you have an emergency kit ready, including medication, cash and important documents and don’t forget to also have a plan in place for your pets.

You can find information through the

• SES Webpage www.ses.qld.gov.au

• Get ready webpage www.getready.qld.gov.au

• Rockhampton Regional Council website www. Rockhampton.qld.gov.au in their Emergency Dashboard where you can also register for “Emergency Dashboard Alerts”.

If you need assistance because of damage or flooding to your home from a storm or cyclone, you can log a job with SES using the Qld SES app which is available on Apple and Android devices QLD SES or you can phone 132500.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lyn Porter’s team for the time they have put in to attending training, activations, deployments, fundraising events and maintenance days throughout 2024, as without their dedication we would not have such a skilled group as we do to assist our community. A huge thank you must also go out to the members families for their support.

They are the ones often left at home fending for themselves while their family members are assisting the community. Thank you for allowing your family members to be a part of the SES!

Looking forward to 2025, it is going to be a big year of celebrations for SES as 2025 marks the 50th year anniversary of the formation of SES and celebrations and displays will occur throughout the state. Mount Morgan Group will be putting together a display of events/activities our group has been involved in since its formation. If there are any former members of SES living in the community, could you please check if you have any old photos that we could get copies of or any other memorabilia (old uniforms etc) that could be borrowed and used for a display. Anything would be greatly appreciated. We are also thinking about holding a reunion of all the former Mount Morgan SES members, so watch this space for more information. Also, Mount Morgan Group IS always looking for new

members and now the Central Region is running recruit training courses throughout the year in different locations. These courses are run for three weekends over a five-week period. At the end of the three weekends new members gain all the qualifications they need to become operational members instead of what would normally take years to complete. Requirements to join SES are: be 16 years of age or older, have or acquire a Working With Children Blue Card (if over 18 years old), pass a criminal history check and be reasonably fit.

If you are interested in joining our group or have any memorabilia that could be used for the 50-year celebrations please feel free to contact me on 0457 865 289. Our first Training night is Monday the 27th January 2025 commencing at 7pm. We then meet fortnightly with the next training on the 10th February 2025.

I would like also to take this opportunity to congratulate Lyn [pictured below], on Thursday, 23 January 2025 Lyn was presented an SES Australia Day award for her commitment to Training on the SES Recruit Courses and her commitment to being a Trainer attending courses all over the Central Region.

The SES Australia Day award was presented at the Rockhampton Regional Council Australia Day awards ceremony conducted at the Heritage Village. Congratulations Lyn, well deserved.
