ROCKHAMPTON REGIONAL COUNCIL

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

MAYOR TONY WILLIAMS

It has been an incredible year of triumphs for our Region, and particularly the Mount Morgan community.

The year began with the commencement of the Mount Morgan pipeline, and coincidentally, a much needed reprieve from severe drought conditions.

With enough rainfall to fill the No. 7 Dam to capacity, three long years of level six water restrictions came to an end. Following months of water quality testing from the dam, we were able to reconnect the town to the dam’s water supply and cease water carting. This was a significant milestone that brought huge relief to our residents and also Council.

We have witnessed the pipeline make rapid progress from Gracemere to Mount Morgan with 25km of pipe laid to date, mostly recently installed across the Dee River and Burnett Highway. This leaves us with only three kilometres of pipe to lay to the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant.

The concrete for the third reservoir in Lucas Street, Gracemere is now curing and works are commencing at the Moonmera site in readiness for a new pump station and small reservoir in addition to upgrades at the Capricorn Highway pump station. Once all elements are complete, we will undertake a rigorous commissioning phase before officially turning on the pipeline in the second half of 2025.

This $88.2 million project, a joint effort between the Australian and Queensland Governments and Council, is a monumental achievement for Mount Morgan and one that I am extremely proud to be part of.

It is a testament to our commitment to securing a permanent, reliable water supply for the community while also positioning Mount Morgan for future growth.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the entire Mount Morgan community for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during these challenging years. I also acknowledge the many contractors and Council’s project delivery team who have worked, and continue to work, extremely hard to deliver this project.

We are incredibly excited for what 2025 holds, with the arrival of a permanent water supply and also the new opportunities for job creation and investment in the local economy presented by Heritage Minerals’ rehabilitation project. This marks a significant turning point for Mount Morgan.

On behalf of myself and my fellow Councillors, I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and safe and healthy New Year.

Mayor Tony Williams

GRAND SOCIAL CLUB

Social clubs attached to hotels are not always about drinking, but can provide members with quality social activities which are conducted within a safe, culturally respected, friendly and inclusive environment.

The Grand Hotel Social Club will hold its annual signon day on 26 January 2025.

Membership is open to all patrons, 18 years and over and costs only $30 for the year.

Club Secretary Mick Warry said on Australia Day the Social Clubs holds a free sausage sizzle, and opportunities to win one of seven BBQ Meat Trays.

“This is an opportunity to enjoy some great live music and talk to some of our members. Every new membe will also receive four free drink vouchers (valued at $32), while renewing members will receive six drink vouchers valued at $48 dollars,” Mick said.

These vouchers are to be used on the day.

The club also holds a Barefoot Bowls Day at the Welfare Bowls Club. Lunch is supplied free, along with all drinks and green fees.

“A Casual Golf Day is something different the club has got planned in 2025,” Mick said.

“We will be seeking members’ thoughts on a Social Day at the Mount Morgan Golf Club. This will no doubt be another opportunity for members to have a enjoyable day outdoors and support our local Sport Clubs,” he said.

Thangool Cup Race Day is the Clubs’s “premier” social event of the year. Members enjoy a comfortable bus ride to Thangool Race Club, stopping on the way at the Jambin or Dululu hotel for a break and free drink. Each member receives free entry into the races and free drinks for the day.

“On our way home we celebrate our race wins, (or commiserate our losses) with another stop at either the Jambin or Dululu hotel,” he said.

The club seeks ideas from members on special events, throughout the year; these events usually include member’s immediate children/grandchildren.

Special events also include the annual Christmas Party with food, drinks and entertainment- all provided at no cost to members. Friday Night Raffles at the Grand Hotel is how the Club funds its social activities. There are a number of great prizes every week.

MOUNT MORGAN CITIZEN’S CLUB

Annual Roundup Soldiers Rooms

What a massive 12 months we have had! 2024 saw us win three grants to implement a number of projects to improve the building. May saw the hall painted inside and out, June was time to install sandstone blocks and the flagpole garden with solar lighting, and with the new roof installation completed at the end of last year, we were able to then invest in solar panels and meter upgrade which went online just last month.

During all of this we managed to run eight themed dances, run raffles, hire the offices and event space, and raise funds for further improvements and community programs.

Our members have continued to step up and help where they can, and we are immensely grateful to have such wonderful human beings supporting our endeavours.

At the last dance, five of our members were recognized with Australian Government Volunteer Awards for their service to not only our club, but also for service in other groups, clubs and activities that have benefitted the community over many years. Well-deserved congratulations to Doris Tremaine, John Tuxworth, Kirra Swain, Christina O'Leary and Barbara Thompson.

Arts Precinct

Despite continued progress where able, it has been a frustrating year for the restoration of the East Street buildings, mainly due to unavoidable bureaucracy and regulatory issues.

Despite such delays, we have managed to secure two grants which funded wheelchair access ramps, and the Pioneer Community Garden which has seen wonderful participation levels since being constructed.

With end of year fast approaching, we hope to have positive resolutions to any hold ups sorted within a timely manner, so we can progress still within the original, albeit delayed commencement timeframe.

Due to such delays, some of our local Artists, who should not be unfairly impacted and need to continue developing their craft and business, have formed Visual Artists 4714, and will be holding an exhibition, “Mine All Mine” at Baree Hall, 14-16 March.

This should be a fantastic showcase of works inspired by our towns history, and mining heritage, and we look forward in anticipation to seeing their collective creations.

Merry Christmas and a sincere thank you, to all our valued members, to other hard working community groups, and of course our wonderful and supportive

residents. We would also like to thank the Mount Morgan Argus for helping us keep you informed. We will see you all in 2025!

DEE RIVER OLDIES

We wish all our Dee River Oldies members and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2025.

A very big thank you to you all for your help and support throughout the year. Your attendance at our meetings, morning teas, christmas lunch and bus trips has made the year all worthwhile. Come along and join us at our 'Welcome in 2025 Morning Tea' on 15 January, 2025. It starts at 10 am and is held in St Mary's Hall, Gordon Street, Mount Morgan. (Behind the Anglican Church). The cost is $5 with raffle and lucky door prizes. This is held a week earlier than usual. Look forward to seeing you there.

We remember those members and their families that have passed. Remembering the times we shared are precious. To the aged care members who relocated you are in our thoughts. Embracing change isn't easy, but we should never give up.

Hope you all get a chance to spend time with family and friends and make some everlasting memories.

Merry Christmas to all.

Stay happy and healthy.

RAINBOW CAFE MOUNT MORGAN

MIRANI MESSAGE

With Glen Kelly, MP

As Christmas approaches, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible community spirit and pride I’ve experienced in Mount Morgan. This town’s togetherness stems from the tireless efforts of local organisations that support one another and celebrate everything that makes Mount Morgan unique.

This year, I was proud to secure funding for a feasibility study to boost tourism opportunities here. This is an important first step toward revitalising the local economy, creating jobs, and showcasing the rich history and beauty of the region.

On Friday, 20 December, I’ll be holding Mobile Offices at the following locations and invite you to stop by to share your thoughts:

• Morgan Street (across from Wattle Bee Next )9:30–10:30 am

• No. 7 Dam picnic area - 11:00 am–12:00 pm

• Mount Morgan Swimming Pool: 1:00–2:00 pm

• Railway Museum - 2:30–3:30 pm

Later, I’ll attend the Twilight Christmas Concert and look forward to catching up with many of you there!

As I settle into my role as Member for Mirani, I thank you for your patience as I finalise staffing for my electorate office, which will open in early January. Regular Mobile Offices will continue in 2025, ensuring I stay accessible to Mount Morgan residents.

This festive season, let’s celebrate our shared achievements, the strength of our community, and the opportunities ahead. Wishing you all a joyful and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Together, we can make Mount Morgan an even better place to call home.

COUNCIL CONNECTION

It was wonderful to celebrate the official reopening with so many of you during the family fun day.

It’s been fantastic to see the facility being so wellused since its opening. There were a whopping 2,700 admissions recorded between September and November alone.

The operator’s Learn to Swim program has also commenced, with 45 active enrolments in November. The pool has truly become a hub of activity, especially during the warmer months, and it’s a been major milestone in enhancing recreation activities in the community.

I also wish everyone good luck in this year’s Buy Local Campaign! Rockhampton Regional Council is proud to support this initiative each year. I’d like to thank Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. for their hard work in organising the campaign, as well as our local businesses for getting involved.

I’m also pleased to announce our commitment to supporting Mount Morgan Buy Local for the next four years. This is wonderful news for those who enjoy finding unique Christmas gifts or spending time with loved ones at Mount Morgan’s fantastic hospitality venues.

This year’s lucky winner will be announced at MMPAD’s Christmas Twilight Concert this Friday night, so be sure to head along to the Mount Morgan Rail Complex to hear the winner, and enjoy the festivities on offer.

Again, Merry Christmas Mount Morgan! I look forward to seeing you all in 2025.

This newly formed branch is growing in membership with a lovely enthusiastic group of women.

Come and visit us in the new year at the RSL building every Wednesday morning from 9.30am starting from 8 January 2025.

As the festive season fast approaches, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to everyone in the Mount Morgan community for a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. Your ongoing support throughout the year has been truly appreciated. Reflecting on this year, one of the key highlights for me would have to be the reopening of the Mount Morgan Pool in March.

What an exciting milestone! The $6.5 million upgrade has transformed the facility, now featuring a modern 25-metre, eight-lane pool, a kiosk, a new amenities building, and a fun wet play area for children.

We also have a monthly stall at Baree Markets where we sell cuddly chooks and QCWA cookbooks and goodies. 2025 will have some fun events so watch out for notices in the new year.

CYCADS TRANSLOCATED FOR PRESERVATION

In days gone by, progress often came at a cost to nature. However, since the 1960’s and 1970’s when the environmental movement started gaining momentum, how mankind and progress interfaces with nature have actively been planned for through the implementation of management plans to protect endangered flora and fauna species.

In line with the need to preserve endangered or protected species the longevity of about 2300 protected Cycad plants is at the forefront of the Boulder Creek Wind Farm proponents, Aula Energy and CS Energy who have developed a translocation plan for the protected Cycas megacarpa species found in this area.

Head of Development for Aula Energy, Mr Anthony Russo said as part of its federal and state government environmental approvals, the Boulder Creek Wind Farm was required to develop this plan.

“The Cycas megacarpa Translocation Management Plan (TMP) for the Boulder Creek Wind Farm was prepared by ecologists from Ecologica Consulting and EMM Consulting ,” Mr Russo said.

The TMP outlines how the project will relocate Cycas megacarpa in the wind farm development footprint to the project’s dedicated offset management area to ensure long term protection of the species and a net positive impact on biodiversity.

The TMP also outlines how additional cycads will be planted to account for cycads that are unsuitable for translocation or that do not survive the translocation process. These seedlings will be propagated from seeds of the Cycas megacarpa, grown in a nursery

and then planted once they have reached suitable maturity. These measures are designed to achieve a net gain of the Cycas megacarpa.

Cycas megacarpa is a small to medium sized cycad that is typically found in open eucalypt woodlands on hilltops and steep slopes and is considered to be an endangered species. Based on field surveys conducted by the TMP team, the Cycas megacarpa in the development footprint range in size from juveniles (up to 50cm) to adults (more than one metre high).

The methodology for translocating the cycads was developed by the TMP authors in consultation with the Queensland Herbarium, the Tondoon Botanic Gardens and transplant specialist Australian Natives.

“It is based upon a 20-step process developed by Dr Paul Forster of the Queensland Herbarium and learnings from successful Cycas translocations led by Ecologica Consulting for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) and LNG Projects between 2009 and 2015,” Mr Russo said.

According to the TMP plants will be carefully removed from the project development footprint and then planted at three recipient sites in the Boulder Creek Wind Farm offset area. The recipient sites are located on private properties in the wind farm project area and provide suitable habitats for the relocated cycads.

During the translocation, a great deal of care will be taken to keep the plant root systems intact and prevent them from drying out. At the transplant location, plants will be positioned with the same orientation as their original site and planted with a combination of the original topsoil and washed river sand or sandy loam. Once the transplant is complete, the location and height of each plant will be recorded and inputted into a database for future monitoring and tracking purposes.

Mr Russo said cycads from the project development footprint will be progressively relocated between late December 2024 and September 2025, with ongoing monitoring and maintenance of their condition as per the TMP. The propagation and planting program of new nursery grown cycads will begin in 2025 and continue for up to seven years.

Approximately 13 people will be involved in this project, including a specialist ecologist and translocation, horticulture and nursery teams. A monitoring ecologist will provide independent monitoring of translocated and propagated cycads to support the program’s reporting obligations to federal environmental agencies.

“The ongoing care, management and monitoring of translocated plants is vital to the success of any translocation program.

Continued on Page 13

Continued on Page 13

The translocated and propagated cycads will be monitored for seven years to confirm that the plants are self-sustaining. The Boulder Creek Wind Farm is required to submit annual compliance reports on the TMP to federal agencies for the first seven years and completion report at the end of the program,” he said.

Site works commenced in the last week of November for the Boulder Creek Wind Farm in central Queensland, beginning with the translocation of protected native Cycad plants, track preparation and site office mobilisation.

The 228MW wind farm, to be located 40km south-west of Rockhampton in Queensland, is co-owned by Aula Energy and CS Energy, with CS Energy purchasing 100 per cent of the wind farm’s output for 20 years. It will generate clean energy to power the equivalent of over 85,000 Australian homes when it begins operating in 2027.

The wind farm will be developed on pastoral land that is predominantly

used for cattle grazing that will continue during the construction and operations phases of the project.

A majority of the disturbance footprint is associated with cut and fill batters to form the 6.5m wide site access road to wind turbine pads.

Once the road is formed, the cut

and fill batters are stabilised and rehabilitated leaving a smaller operational footprint of less than one per cent of the total land area.

The Boulder Creek Wind Farm will support up to 250 jobs during the construction phase and the project continues to seek applications from local businesses and individuals who would like to be involved.

New Art Group Exhibition

Mount Morgan is a hothouse of creativity just waiting to bust out. A new group of artists has come together to form Visual Artists 4714 with the imperative to show their works throughout 2025 and to generate lively interest in our lovely area and local talents. Already a calendar of events has been drawn up so keep an eye out for our pop-up events and workshops, open to all.

To kick off our vision is an exhibition called “Mount Morgan: Mine all Mine” and it’s a title that’s open to interpretation - art responding to the once worldfamous goldmine OR a personal response to having moved here and what it means to live in this beautiful setting. Landscapes of No 7 Dam feature strongly. There will also be ceramics, papier mache and monoprints, all depicting familiar scenes of the mine and surrounds.

Three founding artists, Louise Jones, Pauline Grabham and Nancy Liddle have visited the mine itself a few times to get a feel for the place and the work being done there. Walking by the old buildings, seeing the derelict tunnel entrances and the rusted machinery we recalled the early miners (now passed) to mind very clearly. Artwork by fellow-members, Nicholai von Tonslamann and Anne Copeland will also feature. All art will be for sale. This is your opportunity to own a original Mount Morgan artwork and show support for local artists.

Opening night of the exhibition is Friday 14 March at the Baree Hall and will feature a guest speaker, wine and cheese, live music and a chance to meet the artists. $10 entry at the door. Also featured Friday night is an auction of small artworks from each of the artist; all proceeds will go to the Arts Precinct and Men’s Shed.

For updates go to our FaceBook page @Mount Morgan Pop-Up Exhibition.
