History & Reflections
Pride in your Town Returning to history again we go back to the days when the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company was operating. In those early years of mining underground many miners were subjected to breathing in large quantities of dust. While on the surface, smelter fumes also added to bring problems to the miners’ lungs. In those early days the disease was named as Miners Phthisis, and sadly many died from that problem. To assist in the treatment of this disease of the lungs the Queensland Government built a hospital at Westwood. The sanatorium, a 64 bed complex, was opened on September 7th 1919 when approx. 2000 people attended the opening. By 1925 the incidence of miner’s phthisis had decreased then the hospital specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis. With the development of drugs for tuberculosis in the 1940’s the remaining patients were transferred to the Rockhampton Chest Clinic. The Sanatorium then became a nursing home for the aged till the 1980’s then it was later demolished and sold with one building becoming a private residence in Emerald. Westwood was one of the first uniquely Queensland townships and it was a very busy town in the 1860’s. In 1867 the Railway was constructed from Rockhampton to Westwood making Westwood an important rail head. In 2009 Westwood celebrated its 150th anniversary with a range of activities and events. Attending the event at that time was Mr Craig Wallace the then Minister for Natural Resources and Mr Jim Pearce, Member of Fitzroy. Today, Westwood has a population of approx. 250 who are predominately focussed on agriculture while cattle grazing dominate the surrounding country. Little towns like Westwood have played major roles in the development of the state of Queensland. Of course history comes in many forms and one to ponder are the plants that changed the world. There are numerous numbers of plants that affected history but I have just chosen one at this time, “sugar”, possibly others will be covered in future editions. Sugar cane can go back to 6000BC where it was thought to be grown in New Guinea. It was one of the early crops in America where slaves were used for the tiring work on the plantations and it is reported about 20,000 slaves died from this hard work. It was during the 17th to the 19th centuries that sugar cane juice was converted into raw sugar. In Queensland approx. 50,000 to 62,500 South Sea Island people were brought to work in the northern fields and thankfully most decided to remain in Queensland and became valued citizens. To-day sugar is listed in the good and the not so good health categories. Think clean – Be Tidy. Tourists as well as locals love a clean town. Opening of the Westwood Sanatorium 1919.
Carbide Light By Graeme Meade from Collectables and Memories on East Street
This is an interesting piece, I have not been able to find any information pertaining to it online, so most of the information I have about it is just word of mouth from people who have recognised it and told me what they know. Carbide lighting started in 1900 as mining lamps and for domestic use. It was a cheap bright light, but a little dangerous. People I have spoken to were using this type of light into the early 1980s, for camping and out bush. One of the containers inside is stamped “Made in Australia” so it must be made in Australia. The technology used in this light is from the early 1900s but I really think it was made in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I think this light was made after WW2 when materials were scarce, as was money. So this light was really made to a budget that was as cheap as possible. There were better types of lamps coming on to the market; pressurised kerosene was becoming popular then. But from what I am told these lights were used in shearing sheds, shepherds/shooters huts, camping. Whereas, the kerosene lamps were used in the house, maybe because they were safer. I cannot buy any carbide to test the light, but I’m told it is quite bright, and made a “phet phet” noise as it burnt.

On Saturday 18th March a number of our Juniors travelled to Wowan for their Junior Open. We have a great partnership with this regional club, and it was fantastic for our kids to compete and feel out a different course. The results were as follows Leon BrownGross Winner, Cody Brown-Gross 9 Hole Runner up and Travis Ireland- 6 Hole Gross Runner up. Great job! A big thankyou to all who put on a great day and high five to our members who transported our young players out there. Sponsorship Legends! Mount Morgan Golf Club has a passion for getting kids playing, and we are amazingly lucky to have some fantastic sponsors on board. All of our Junior Members are gratefully sponsored by The Golden Mount Festival Association, and they support us through providing funds that allow us to purchase new eyecatching shirts that our young members will wear in competition, membership to various coaching opportunities, and the cost of competing. We are fortunate enough that upcoming Juniors have been approached for individual sponsorship, and we would like to give a big shout out to the RAILWAY HOTEL SOCIAL CLUB for their contribution of a set of clubs and golf shoes to a most worthy recipient, Allan Tull. and to BRADS BARGAIN BOX for their sponsorship of Liam Moss, this editions ” Player in Profile.” Coming Up… Next edition, a wrap up of The Wally Hall Memorial Golf Day which was held on Sunday 19th March.

Senator Chris Ketter listens to Mount Morgan
John Steinberger, Leonie Lane, Frank Fedrick, Rose Molloy, Zac Beers,Melray McNamara & Sen. Ketter.
Senator Christopher (Chris) Ketter was elected to the Australian Senate as a Queensland Representative in the 2013 election, and the people of Mount Morgan had the opportunity to greet, meet and bring forward their individual, community and business concerns to him on Friday 17th March 2017. The Senator is involved with seven standing committees encompassing areas including NBN, Education, Employment, ACNC and Cancer research to name a few.
After a visit to the Historical Museum Senator Chris met with many locals outside the Pharmacy in Morgan Street. Chris and Zac also spoke to the Morgan Street Business proprietors to enable them the opportunity to have their voices heard. When asked if he was happy with the turn out to the short notice visit, Chris replied “Very happy to see people lined up to speak to me about their concerns.” Chris believes “It is critical to work hard at the local level and remain grounded and reflective of the community”, and that was portrayed in his empathy and genuine concern for the problems that locals in a small town face every day. Doug Hoehne & Senator Ketter in Morgan Street
Barry Batchelor speaks with Zac Beers
The Senator and candidate for Flynn, Zac Beers began their journey of discovery in Mount Morgan with an informal lunch at the Mount Morgan Leichardt Hotel. MMPAD representatives were privileged to attend this function to highlight issues concerning unemployment, penalty rates, tourism, economic and future sustainability for our town. The Senator commented “If the Mine goes ahead this will certainly improve the prospect for the youth of Mount Morgan”.
The Gentlefolk to Cycle into the Mount
5.
This Saturday afternoon 25th and Sunday 26th March you may notice
groups of cyclists riding around Mount Morgan. This is because a face book bicycle group is going to do a ride around Mount Morgan on Saturday afternoon. The “Gentlefolk Single-Speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society” started in Rockhampton in December 2015 as a small group of people getting together to ride their older style bikes and socialise together. What started as a ride to a picnic spot has morphed into laneway rides, because we can rides, historical rides. Some of the “Gentlefolk” have spent a lot of dollars and time on their bike, while others may be on the bike they ride every day, or the latest find from the tip shop. A recent ride saw 45 riders on a “Port City of Rockhampton” historical ride. This ride travelled along the banks of the Fitzroy River looking at old buildings and discovering the early history of old wharfs that lined the river bank in the late 1880s to early 1900s, making Rockhampton the second biggest port in Queensland. Of course the Mount Morgan Mine had something to do with that as well. The next ride is on Saturday 25th March. Leaving at 3:30pm from under the gas lamp in East Street, Mount Morgan, that’s between the Leichhardt Hotel and the Collectables and Memories shop. The ride will take about 2 hours to complete, with stops at historical sites along the way. After the ride we are having drinks and dinner at the Leichhardt Hotel. We have invited people from other face book groups based from Hervey Bay to Townsville, so we will be seeing some new faces and bikes. Some riders are making a weekend out of it, so they may be riding around on Sunday morning as well. Graeme
Rotary Cleans up Mount Morgan Clean up Australia Day saw Mount Morgan Rotary Club working in Morgan Street again this year. Five of our members
Pictured Lyn Thomas, Ann Dwyer, Maggie Johnson, Joan Wilson and Del Rowley
Lyn Thomas, Ann Dwyer, Maggie Johnson, Joan Wilson and Del Rowley cleaned up areas in Morgan Street and the median strip. Items found were again cigarette buts, broken glass, drink bottles, cotton buds, popper straws and a shopping trolley which was returned to IGA. We would like to encourage people who are dropping these items to use the bins in the street and the median strip to keep our street safe and tidy. Bette Broom donated cold water for the workers and when we went to the Hot Bread Shop for a cuppa at the end of the clean up day we were given apple slices with our cuppa. These donations were greatly appreciated.
We also need to thank Ann who delivered our seven bags of rubbish to the dump for us. Please consider being involved next year in our Clean up Australia Day event. Del Rowley (Site Supervisor)

Council Colleagues Shave for a Cure
7.
Four Rockhampton Regional Council colleagues, including Councillor Drew Wickerson, have today ‘Braved the Shave’ as part of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign! Braving the clippers one-by-one, colleagues Kerrie Lodewikus and her husband David, Murray Smith and Cr Wickerson (Pictured) received a new ‘do in support of the Leukaemia Foundation. Today has been more than just losing hair for Kerrie and David, it is an event to honour and remember their son, Daniel, who sadly lost his battle to bone cancer and also for the children who were fighting cancer alongside him. “When my son was 13 I watched him battle bone cancer and unfortunately it was a fight he did not win,” Kerrie said. “Since then, I have unfortunately watched other members of my immediate family and my friend’s families lose the same battle. “Whilst my son did not have leukaemia there were many children in the hospital with him that did. “By taking part in this event I am doing a small part to help raise much needed funds to give others victims of this disease and their families the best chance of beating it.” With the rest of Council backing the team of shavers, they have managed to raise more than $2,000 and are still counting! “I have received amazing support from Councillor Wickerson and my co-workers. Hopefully the funds we raise will provide help to a family that needs it as they go through the most difficult journey of their lives,” Kerrie said. Councillor Wickerson said the money raised so far is enough to give at least four regional families a free place to stay close to treatment in the city for one week. “Every little bit really does help, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many generous sponsors including the Honourable Bill Byrne Member for Rockhampton, staff of James Becker and Co., and Scott Conaghan for their amazing donations!” Cr Wickerson said. However, Cr Wickerson says he doesn’t entirely agree with the ‘Be Brave and Shave’ slogan. “I don’t fully agree with the slogan ‘Be Brave and Shave’, it’s the people with cancer having to endure extensive rounds of chemotherapy with no choice but to lose their hair, in addition to the other significant impacts of treatment – they are incredibly braver,” he said. More than 60,000 Australians are living with blood cancer or related disorders, and every day another 35 people will be diagnosed. Australian researchers are leading the way towards developing highly effective cures including optimising the effectiveness of stem cell transplants and gene splicing.

The Orange Dot Movie Review
By Larry at Fox Video Yes, Jack’s Back. In recent years Jackie Chan had seemingly semi-retired to his beautiful Chinese homeland, starring in and producing (often in association with his friend Jet Li) magnificent epic historical Chinese films, recounting episodes of the fascinating 4,000 year struggle of his people (available at FOX VIDEO). When Jackie teamed up with Chris Tucker to make a series of buddy movies (RUSH HOUR 1,2 & 3) we saw him at his best. Great action. Great laughs. Great fun!... But then he went home and we thought it was all over... And we were sad. Fear not. Jackie Chan has returned as full of wit and beans as he ever was,
and while his run with Chris Tucker was inspired, whoever dreamed of teaming him up with Johnny Knoxville is a certifiable crazy-man genius! Fists, feet and rapid-fire dialogue fly in this explosive action comedy, SKIPTRACE. For years, by-the-book Hong Kong detective Bennie Chan (Jackie) has tried to avenge his partner’s murder at the hands of drug lord, Handsome Willy. When Bennie learns that a freewheeling American gambler called Connor Watts (Knoxville) may have stumbled upon the evidence he needs to prove his case, Bennie goes looking for Connor to try and convince him to team up in the quest
for justice... Whether Connor wants to or not! It becomes a race against the clock as this unlikely pair embark on a perilous and entertaining adventure that drags them from the steppes of Mongolia to the dunes of the Gobi Desert to the breath-taking peaks of rural China. Rated M for mature themes and violence (the censors should get over themselves... HELLO... It’s Jackie Chan people... of course it should be PG!), SKIPTRACE is directed by Renny Harlin and is 1 hour + 45 minutes of visual splendour and good oldfashioned FUN. Ready, set, panic! SKIPTRACE...Loved it!

Recently there has been discussion online about what to feed native birds. Many locals do feed the magpies, kookaburras, pee-wees, butcher birds, lorikeets etc., and to feed them the wrong diet can not only make them sick, it can lead to their death! This is the last thing we want for our beautiful feathered friends. Never ever feed them bread! Native animals and birds cannot and do not digest bread. It swells up inside them and makes them feel full, but it has the opposite effect. Because they feel full they will not seek out their natural diet, and they actually starve to death. Often birds, ducks in particular, come into care, and despite exhaustive attempts to get
them to eat proper food, they won’t touch anything but bread. We have seen magpies in such poor condition as to be on deaths door from being fed bread, it is heartbreaking. Magpies and just about all the similar black and whites, such as butchies, can be fed dog sausage, heart, beef, cheese. They can be given mince, however mince can leach the calcium from their bones, and should only be given very sparingly. Never feed them fat. Kookaburras should never be fed mince, it gets stuck in the front of their beaks and can literally rot the beak, and they cannot eat any more than .02% fat in their diet as it affects their liver.
Heart or beef is a good option for kookies. Lorikeets are nectar eaters. Lorikeet mix can be bought and made into a very wet porridge for them, or you can give them fruit- never avacadoas it is toxic to birds. Seed eaters should never have their seed left in a dish that can hold water. Whether or not you feed the birds is up to you, but is better to let them find their own foods and just give them a little treat now and then; however sometimes they need help, such as in drought etc. It is nice to see some rain, but please remember to leave water out for the birds and animals.
Mick Blake Memorial Bird Sale
11.
We held the Rockhampton Finch and Parrot Social Club Inc. 9th Annual Bird Sale -There was a large variety of birds available for sale such as Finches, Parrots, Canaries, Budgies, etc. Or you could just have admired them. There was also be a variety of different types of Trade Tables with lots of accessories for the birds available or anything else you require such as seeds, nest boxes, medicines, aviaries, hopers, nets etc. Vendors came from all around Queensland, including Proserpine, Sarina to Brisbane, Blackall, Toowoomba are just a few to mention. You can also join our club the Rockhampton Finch and Parrot Social Club Inc. We had recorded about 500 adults that had come through the gates and quite a few kids. The entry fee was only $2 Adult and Children U/13 Free. There was coffee and pies to enjoy while looking at the spectacular display of birds & products in the comfort of the Rockhampton Show Grounds, Robert Schwarten Pavilion, Exhibition Road, Wandal. This was held on the 5th March, 2017 and commenced at 9am. We also had Ellen Smith do the opening of the sale. There were lots of finches go through the gates and there was a very large variety of parrots that were for sale. I was happy I did sell a few and I know if Mick would have been there he would have sold the lot before coming home. He was really good at that. There was a large variety of raffles to be won. Karin from Karmic Aviaries put up a beautiful pair of breeding birds which were raffled off at the sale as well.
Steve Walker from the club won them and he handed the pair over to a young fellow who was waiting all day for the raffle to be drawn and was estatic with the price of the birds that Steve had given to him. This was a wonderful gesture. One that I had seen Mick do many times at the sale if someone could not quite afford the pair of birds he would either reduce them so they could or he would just have given them away. This was the sort of person Mick was. He enjoyed the sales and just being with other aviculturists. I would like to carry this on for Mick and keep the birds going. So hopefully we will see you there next year at the Sale in March. See you all there. Karin Blake
Kindness Abounds at Central State School
Mount Morgan Central State Primary School held a special “kindness breakfast” on Friday the 17th March, 2017 where students, parents and visitors were treated to bacon and egg burgers, juice and “kindness water” to enable the community to see how the School’s Breakfast Club operates. “Mark Ricks proprietor of FeelGood* promotions and the Golden Mount Festival Association have formed a partnership to labour share, in their aim to assist other organisations and the community of Mount Morgan.” President of the Golden Mount Festival Association Eve-lyn Rogers said.
As part of the fundraising venture for the school breakfast club, Feel Good* Promotions and the Golden Mount Festival Association will have co-branded Kindness* bags for sale at this year’s Golden Mount Festival. Businesses and community organisations can also promote by providing small items such as business cards, brochures, pens etc. in the bags for a minimum of a gold coin donation. (Of course it’s ok to donate more if you wish!). As the theme of this year’s Festival Celebration is ‘Music, Fashion and Kindness’, what a great way to not only assist the Central State Primary School students and at the same time promote your business organisation. Mount Morgan Central State School Brekky Club provides toast for the students every morning from 8.30am until first bell. The Frazer Coast Caravan Club will be celebrating eleven years
together in June this year. Every month the members pack up their caravans and head off around Australia for twelve days. On Wednesday 8th March, they arrived in Mount Morgan staying for two nights. On Friday 10th March the group visited the Railway Museum for a tour before they headed down to Bouldercombe and then on to Rockhampton to make their way home back to Harvey Bay. The group were treated to a cuppa and a cupcake as they sat chatting with the volunteers. Two of the visitors were descendants of Mount Morganites Lill Phillips from Redhill and Duthies from Dululu. We had a visit with The Roundabout Tours on Wednesday the 8th March, with 7 Wonderful ladies popping in to the Information Centre. The Roundabout tours had a ‘ladies only’ outback tour from the 1st of March to the 9th of March. They left from Gympie on Wednesday and travelled to Dolby, Charleville, Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry, Charters Towers, Emerald, and a week later they reached Mount Morgan. On Arrival they went to the Leichhardt hotel, had a BYO lunch at the Information Centre and Jumped on the TMC guided tour’s bus to discover more of the history Mount Morgan has to offer. On the 9th March, roundabout tours continued to Biloela and arrived back home. This is the first of many more adventures for the ‘Ladies only’ outback tours.
