FACELIFT ALMOST COMPLETE When the facelift of the Mount Morgan Historical Railway Museum and Visitor Information Centre began in February, the sheer amount of work seemed endless. However, with the
halfway mark passed, it can well and truly be said that the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel. The project should be finished in time for the launch of the official Mount Morgan Driver Reviver
stop which has been offered to accredited information centres in areas where these stops are few and far between. MMPAD is happy to provide this important service to the visiting public.

Festival News Planning for the 42nd Golden Mount Festival is well under way, and it could not be done without the support and assistance of Rockhampton Regional Council. This year they have come on board, offering the expertise of their Advance Rockhampton Team. These are opportunities that allow committee members of the GMFA, to learn about event planning best practice, and opens up a world of possibilities not only for the festival, but also as individuals. When people volunteer, though often a thankless job, you are always presented with challenges that need to be overcome, situations that are new to you, and enjoy a wealth of knowledge shared from other volunteers. It also looks fantastic on a resume, so for school leavers uncertain of direction, jobseekers wanting extra skills, or anyone who wants to feel involved, this may be for you! We are always seeking new recruits. If you are unable to assist as a volunteer, we are also seeking sponsorship for events, and can offer great advertising bang for buck. As we promote the Golden Mount Festival through radio, print, social media and television, you will need to get in early to secure exposure, so the time is now! You will also begin to see flyers and programs being distributed very shortly, and in the next edition of the Argus, we will commence acknowledging our wonderful sponsors. For those who want to get involved as participants on the day, please email goldenmountfestival@gmail. com for market stall applications, Street Procession entry forms, and of course our famous Running of the Cutter entry. Local businesses are also able to decorate their shopfronts to reinforce the “OUT OF THIS WORLD” theme, and visitors on the day are encouraged to wear themed costumes. If you would like to attend, meetings are 4:30 pm, on the third Tuesday of every month at Saint Mary’s Hall in Gordon Street. For more information please call 0457561711 or follow us on Facebook. FAMILY VISIT REINFORCES THE VALUE OF “HOME” rear window. My aunt, Gaynor Cameron, had come down from Mackay to stay with friends, Bill and Glenys Bret in Rockhampton, who had very kindly brought her up to see me for the afternoon. Catching us all unawares, midrenovation, we tried to make them as comfortable as we could and chatted away about Mount Morgan’s unique history and its importance in the affairs of the world in its heyday.
Above: Bill and Glenys Bret, Gaynor Cameron and Ken Winter. BY KEN WINTER It’s been some 12 years since Imagine my delighted surprise I moved to Mount Morgan, and when a car rolled up to the Visitor during that time, visits from Information Centre with a familiar family have been extremely rare. face smiling at me through the
YOUTH WEEK ACTIVITIES IN MOUNT MORGAN Rockhampton Youth Interagency Network (RYIN) will host this year’s Youth Week in the Rockhampton Region. A range of activities will be on offer to young people that encourage an active lifestyle and healthy choices.
All the time, I couldn’t believe my eyes and that she had gone to so much trouble to see me. The occasion seemed to reinforce how home can feel so much more like home, when family arrives. I still can’t get over it, my lovely little Aunty Gaynor came to visit. One of my favourite people in the world!
MURDER SOLVED DURING
THREE COURSE MEAL A small, but enthusiastic group of Mount Morgan residents joined Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc members for a delicious three course Progressive Dinner on Saturday, 23 March.
Mount Morgan’s Activities will be held at Boyd Park and will include Skate Park demonstrations, stalls, art activities, graffiti art, music and food. The day at Boyd Park will start at 10 am. A basketball game, starting at 9.30 am will be held at the Bedsor Street Basketball Court. All activities will be held on Wednesday, 10 April.
The “Murder Mystery” themed dinner started at the Golden Nugget Hotel with entree of spring rolls and sweet and sour fish (alternate drop).
Rockhampton Youth Week’s focus is on supporting marginalised youth to be more active and to make healthier choices. RYIN members from various youth support agencies have been developing a range of activities, in association with local business organisations, that link with the Queensland Youth Strategy’s four building blocks of supporting our most vulnerable young people, housing, healthy future and educating into employment.
The guests then returned to the Golden Nugget for decadent strawberry cheesecake and Black Forest Cake.
Page 6
The diners then progressed to the Grand Hotel for either a chicken parmy or crumbed steak and a round of Mount Morgan trivia.
Doug Hoehne was the Lucky Door winner, Michael Rowe won the raffle and Kathy Lynn proved to be the best detective of the diners, by correctly guessing the murderer, the time, the place, the weapon and the motive. Well done Kathy!

The Gentlefolk are back! By Graeme Meade The Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society are returning to Mount Morgan on Saturday, 30 March for their annual Mount Morgan ride. This is the third Gentlefolk ride around Mount Morgan, as there are still lots more places to explore, as well as old favourites. It will great to ride by the Railway Station and show off the new paint job. The Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society is basically a Facebook group started by a group of cyclists about 4 years ago. The idea was to get people that have old bicycles to meet up to go for a ride somewhere for a picnic.
This year’s ride starts at 3 pm on Saturday, 30 March, from the gas light in East Street. Just bring a bike, helmet and wear covered in shoes. Any one is welcome to join us, if you need any more information, call into the Collectables and Memories shop or give me a call on 0411 073 974. If you happen to see a group of people on bikes riding past your house or on the road, give them a wave or cheer, they are a friendly lot.
We still do a picnic ride now and then but the rides have morphed into rides that explore the historical sites of the region. Rides usually take a couple of hours, the distance is between 10 to 15 kilometres, with plenty of stops. Any bike is welcome, but we like to see older ones. Many riders have built up or bought old bikes from tip shops or garage sales, and it is good to see the old machines still being ridden. Dress in old clobber or casual ridding clothes, lycra is not required, and is in fact frowned upon.

VALE CLARICE PIGRAM It was with sorrow that we learned of the passing of our dear friend, Clarice, at the age of 97. Clarice had enjoyed her life in Mount Morgan until when she moved to Brisbane (Ferny Hills) to spend time with her daughter, Lyn and her family. She was a very talented lady in Arts and Crafts and she used these talents for the benefit of the needy in this area. During the last war, when Australia’s soldiers were sent overseas, Clarice was one of the many knitters who made various warm items for their benefit (they were advised that these were much welcomed gifts). In recent years similar knitted or crocheted items were made for the homeless in this area, besides colourful woollen rugs for the hospital patients. Clarice’s framed words of cross stitch and tapestry were a delight while her beautiful beaded dolls were just that – beautiful. At 96 years, she was still making her crochet squares for the woollen rugs. A quiet lady who used her talents to help those in need, in her own quiet way.

Curiosities Old and New By Graeme Meade
The water could get very hot, up to boiling, so to get the washing out, tongs were needed to dump the washing into the rinsing tub. In more modern times tongs could be used in twin tub electric washing machines, these machine had 2 tubs one for washing another for spinning. Horrible things I hated them! This pair of laundry tongs, are made from two rectangular pieces of wood that are held together at the top by a strip of wire that acts as a spring.
LAUNDRY TONGS A few weeks ago I was helping a friend clean an old house they had bought to rent out. When I was sweeping out the outside laundry I found these old tongs behind the laundry tub. They looked like they had been lying down there for years. I have written about laundry items before and I remember getting some feedback, that Tuesday was laundry day in Mount Morgan. I don’t know why, maybe they only fired up the copper once a week. Back in the bad old days before electricity was around some people would heat up a copper, which was like a very large pot with room for a fire underneath. They would fill the copper with water, then light the fire, and when the water was right throw the washing in.
The curved wire strip is attached to the wooden arms by bending the wire around on the inside of the tongs. On the inner edge of the bottom of each wooden arm, a curved indentation has been carved. There is a piece of copper wire though the handle to stop them spreading apart. These tongs are about 49 cm long. Many types of tongs were available - most were commercially made, while others were homemade. In the late 1970’s, I lived for a couple of years in a house that only had a copper, and it had a hand wringer between it and the rinsing tubs. The laundry room was about 10 meters from the house, and It had a bath tub in it, so I could bucket water from the copper into the bath tub. In winter time I could heat that laundry room into a sauna, and soak in the bath. It was bliss; well worth the effort of cutting the fire wood up and making the fire, and I could wash my clothes at the same time!

Movie Review HARMONY Book One of the Five Frequencies Saga You’ll remember Boxing Day in 2017 when a budding star was cruelly and abruptly taken from us, Australia and the world, along with her entire family. a 50-yearold serial traffic offender who was in a hurry to get home after visiting the methadone clinic in Nowra failed to negotiate a curve on the Princes Highway on the NSW coast and drifted at high speed into the path of their car. A few weeks later Jessica Falkholt left us. Jessica held a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications, was a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), had appeared in TRICKY BUSINESS, UNDERBELLY: BADNESS, BITE CLUB; and had secured feature roles in HOME AND AWAY as Hope Morrison (2016) and in MYSTERY ROAD as Genevieve
(2017). Her star was definitely rising and her popularity gathering pace. 2017 was a very busy year. She also completed work on her first feature film, HARMONY. You’ll see what a great and irreplaceable talent we have lost. HARMONY is the first of a planned five-part saga entitled THE FIVE FREQUENCIES (written and directed by Corey Pearson), which follow five orphans as they learn to develop and control their unique powers in order to save humanity. HARMONY, a lonely 19-yearold girl living on the streets, is a super-empath. She has the power to absorb and remove fear from others, but with each person she touches the negative emotion grows within herself, not as fear but it weakens and sickens her. So with the healing power she brings to others comes her own suffering. HARMONY must be careful to cleanse herself of this burden. With too much fear she
may die. Then HARMONY meets the one person she can touch without cost, Mason. Awkward, full of kindness, and completely void of fear, he is like nothing she has ever felt before. She also meets the one person she cannot touch. The evil Jimmy who thrives off the very fear in others that she is meant to take away. Weakened by her gift and with Jimmy and the universal negative storm closing in, HARMONY and Mason realise that they must come together to balance the growing flood of negativity that threatens to swallow the world. Also featuring Eamon Farren, Jerome Meyer and Jacqueline McKenzie, HARMONY is rated M for ‘mature themes’ and runs for an hour and a half. HARMONY, an intriguing concept and an interesting, if not prescient comment on today’s society... Loved it!

Pride in Your Town This edition we are giving you a few beautiful words idle mind is the devil’s workshop and the devils name that were set to music and glorious scenes, but is Alzheimer. unfortunately we cannot do reproduce this in our article, but we do hope you enjoy the words and the Enjoy the simple things. wisdom and humour of it all. Laugh often, long and loud, laugh till you gasp for breath. Philosophy of Old Age Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we are kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about ageing that you think in fractions. How old are you? I’m four and a half. You’re never thirty six and a half. You’re four and a half going on 5! That’s the key. You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number or even a few ahead. How old are you? I’m gonna be sixteen! You could be thirteen, but hey, you’re gonna be sixteen, and then the greatest day of your life……..you become twenty one. Even the words sound like a ceremony…….You’re twenty one ………Yessss!
The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. Be alive, while you are alive. Surround yourself with what you love; be it family, pets, music, plants or whatever.
Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If unstable improve it. If beyond that, get help. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the shops, the country anywhere but Not where the guilt is. Tell the people that you love them, at every opportunity.
Always remember……..Life is not measured by the Then you turn thirty! Ouch, what happened there? number of breaths we take, but by the moments that Makes you sound like sour milk that had to be thrown take our breath away. out. There’s no fun now, you’re just a sour dumpling. Until next time. What’s wrong what’s changed? You became twenty one, you turn thirty then you’re pushing forty….whoa! Put on the brakes. It’s all slipping away. Before you know it you have reached fifty and your dreams are all gone. But wait!!!You make it to sixty, you didn’t think you would. So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSHING 40, and REACH 50 and MAKE IT to 60. You have built up so much speed you HIT 70. After that it is a day by day thing. You get into your eighties and every day is a complete cycle; you eat lunch; you blink and it is 4.30; you reach bedtime, and it doesn’t end there into the nineties, you start going backwards. I was just ninety two! Then a strange thing happens, if you make it over a hundred you become a little kid again. I’m one hundred and a half. May you all make it to a healthy one hundred and a half.
How to stay young. Throw out non-essential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the Doctors worry about your health. That is why you pay them. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. Keep learning more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let your brain idle. An 27 March - 10 April 2019

WATERSKI WRAP UP The threat of rain did not deter waterskiers from around Central Queensland taking to the water on the weekend of 9-10 March. Over 20 skiers competed in two categories - slalom and trick – over the two days at the Big Dam. Waterski Qld Director Rob Mitchell said the organisation liked skiing on the dam. He said the numbers were down on the previous tournament weekend due to many competitors taking part in the Moomba Masters in Victoria, but he was happy with the number of skiers competing. Mr Mitchell said he hoped to organise future events for Mount Morgan, but that would depend on water levels in the dam. “The water was a little lower than normal, but this made it better for the spectators as the skiers were closer to the shoreline.” “The dam has a lot of potential for future skiing events,” he said. Welfare Bowls Club On Sunday, 17 March the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan hosted the annual St Patrick’s Day Bowls with participants playing for the Alex Teeney Memorial Shield. Although numbers were down with 14 players on the green and with a number of onlookers we managed to have a very enjoyable day. Rotary provided a delicious BBQ lunch and there were lots of prizes in the Multi Draw raffle and Trophies for the winners on the green. Thanks to the Rotary Club for hosting this day and thanks to the Rocky Rotary members who came up to support it. For more photos and info look us up on Facebook. We play Barefoot Bowls on Friday nights starting at 6.30 pm and Sunday social bowls starting at
9.30 am . New players are always welcome, and we are situated at 28 Thompson Avenue. Supplied by Dave Thornton
