History & Reflections

Pride in your Town An early page of the “Morning Bulletin” of 1973 was discovered in some treasures and we wish to share some of the contents with you. It is not 100% as written as the paper is so old, and the article dealt with many Chinese subjects. It was publicised after Miss Nessie Chardon had presented her address to the Mount Morgan Historical Society of that era. Early Chinese influence in Mount Morgan. A simple shrine standing for more than 80 years (now 123) in the Mount Morgan Cemetery is one of the few remaining links with the past left by the Chinese, who played their part in the development of the town when, together with the British and European settlers, they opened up the district. Nothing as yet has been written to mark the silent passing of these Chinese across the pages of the town’s early history or of their contribution to the early settlement following the discovery of gold. All that remains are a few silent reminders of the large numbers who flocked to Mount Morgan from Ballarat, Bendigo, and Crocodile Creek to seek for gold and earn a livelihood among often prejudiced and hostile miners. Our early settlers were so busy seeking gold and settling in their new environment that they had neither the time nor the inclination to till the soil. This was left to the Chinese, for to them this was a familiar way of life since time immemorial. It is apparent to us today with our ever increasing knowledge of nutrition that, without the fresh fruits and vegetables provided by the Chinese market gardeners the health

of the miners, timber getters, their wives and children would have suffered grave defects. Blainey in his book “The Rush that never ended” mentioned Chinese were brought out from China to Darwin when it was noticed the health of the early settlers was deteriorating rapidly because of bad food, lack of fresh vegetables and over indulgence in liquor. Old-timers in Mount Morgan tell the story of the first market gardener to make his appearance when the town was springing up. He selected the site on the banks of the Dee River on the spot on which the High School oval now stands near the Carmody Bridge. This garden probably extended along the banks of the River behind Bridge Street. Some Chinese coins were found a few years later by a householder in Bridge Street. He had a battle with bandicoots that ate all his seedlings but he overcame that problem and produced his fruit and vegetables. Many gardens became established in the town but the biggest I remember was situated where the Motel and Caravan Park now stand. The creek behind always had water in it. Generally the fresh produce was delivered in large cane baskets on a long pole carried on their shoulders. We certainly do owe so much to the early Chinese settlers. Black Smith’s Hole Punch

Graeme Meade from Collectables & Memories East Street

I purchased this item with a pile of old rusty bits and pieces a few weeks ago. I was told it was probably used on the railway to put spikes in, but it didn’t seem right, I have a tool for that, maybe next week’s item? To me it looks more like a blacksmiths tool, so I started to ask people about it. It has some very faint marks stamped into it the solid steel part that I could not really read. I tried to clean up the marks with steel wool and got excited when I thought I could see MMLtd or MMGM Co on it, but sometimes it’s what you want to see clouding your vision. I did a few CSI moves on the mark and after a few things not working, wet chalk rubbed into it showed me, W.H. PLUMB 19?1. That is the same company that made Plumb axes. They started in Sydney, not sure when, in the 1940s the company was called Plumb (Australia) Pty. Worked that out, but what is it used for, I think it is a hole punch. A blacksmiths tool use to make a hole in hot steel. The blacksmith would have belted it with a hammer while the work was still hot. Holes in iron components were punched; there would have been a variety of shapes, but mostly rectangular or square. Round punched holes were uncommon. I guess this method would have not been used much from the early 1900s due to better drills being made.

Beersheba Commemorations 2016

The 99th Anniversary of the charge

of Beersheba – one of the greatest Australian victories of World War I – was commemorated at Anzac Park Mount Morgan on Saturday the 29th October at 1100 hours. Beersheba, often described as the last successful cavalry charge in history, saw the Australians stunningly defeat the Turks in 1917 and open the door to the allied victory in the Middle East. The 5th Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop paraded along Morgan Street and then presented the Guard of Honour at Anzac Parade for the Service. Anglican Church Lay Minister Keith Hare presented the address and prayer for the Service and several wreaths were placed on the cenotaph to honour the fallen soldiers. Mike Johnson from the Mount Morgan RSL Chapter presented a summary of the Charge of the Light horse. 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Beersheba Battle and although numbers at the Mount Morgan service were small this year organizers are asking the public to please mark this date in their calendar to commemorate and recognize the sacrifice that our Soldiers have made for freedom.

Over two months two attacks on Gaza had failed at great cost and when General Sir Edmund Murray took over as Commander in the field himself morale was uplifted, and General Allenby planned to strike a different course. The main difficulty of this plan was the lack of adequate water supplies. After a gruelling night march from the south, the British infantry launched their attack from the south and west of Beersheba at dawn on the 31st October 1917. For this operation to succeed, Beersheba had to be taken in one day, otherwise this huge force would exhaust its water supply. Most of the horses had at this time been without water for 48 hours and the nearest adequate water supply for the Desert Mounted Corps was some 12 hours ride away. As sunset approached, most of the positions had been taken, but Beersheba with its legendary water wells was still in the hands of the Turks.

The Light Horsemen and their superb

horses had carried out the most successful charge in the history of the war, some say the most successful in history, against what had seemed impossible odds.

3.

In the years to come the men would talk of this action at Beersheba, but as one Light Horseman said “It was the horses that did it; those marvellous bloody horses. Where would we have been but for them”? The casualties amongst the men and horses although severe were small compared with the task accomplished. Of the 800 men who rode in the charge, only 31 men had been killed. The 4th Regiment had two officers and nine other ranks killed and four officers and 13 other ranks wounded; the 12th Regiment had 20 other ranks killed and four officers and 15 other ranks wounded. Nearly all the casualties occurred in the trenches The charge had demonstrated again the incalculable effect of shocktactics. The swift, thundering rush of successive waves of horsemen over the dusty ground in the failing light had bewildered and deceived the German and Turkish staff, who had afterwards confessed that they believed the 800 Light Horsemen to be at least a Division strong. Remberance Service will be held at ANZAC Park Mount Morgan on the 11th November at 11am.

Halloween Celebrations Frightfully Good Halloween Celebrations A Spooky Success! Mount Morgan, be proud! The annual Halloween Community Event was held on the eve of Saturday 29th October. A huge number of people in all sorts of costumes turned up for the creepy capers, with caged zombies, a haunted house, amusement rides, fairy crafts and a Bidgerdii services information booth. A big thankyou to Rotary for providing a free sausage sizzle which fed the masses. Mount Morgan Central State School P&C had a showbag stall and raised over $300 to go towards school resources and improvements, so thanks to those who gave their support. The community enthusiasm and participation was a sight to behold, and makes one proud to be involved in these sort of events. This is the 10 year anniversary of the Halloween celebration with key organiser Donna Anderson at the helm, and her contribution has been invaluable over the years. She has declared it her last, however we all hope she sticks around with that interminable Mount Morgan spirit!

To all who donated lollies, time or equipment,….to all who dressed up and brought along their children,….. to all who came out as families for an evening event, …..and to Mount Morgan Rotary, The White Elephant, Mount Morgan IGA, Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop, Bidgerdii, and Mount Morgan Central State School,….. News from the Golf Club

Such a busy couple of weeks for your local Golf Club! The Junior Closed Championships have wrapped up, with a great show of competition from our up and coming Junior Golfers. All competitors that completed their holes showed admirable determination and sportsmanship, and did the club proud. Congratulations to the following winners:- 18 hole Gross Champion Allan Tull, 9 hole Gross Champion Cody Brown, 6 hole Gross Champion Eli Tanner, 6 hole Nett Champion Travis Ireland, 3 hole Gross Champions Liam Moss and Sienna Miller, 3 hole Nett Champion Georgia Moss. Well done! The following weekend was The White Family Golf Day. This event raised funds for the Royal Flying Doctors and Capricorn Emergency Helicopter Service, a cause close to the clubs Vice President Allan White, after his 17 year old daughter Zoe, a talented jockey, was seriously injured in a racing accident at Thangool last December, and was airlifted to Brisbane. Thankfully she is well on the way to a full recovery, and 10 months on has resurrected her successful horse racing career taking out wins around the region, including the Gladstone Cup. The Golf Day saw 45 competitors enjoying 18 holes in 3 person teams to play an Ambrose competition, with The Hard Ups team taking out Gross Winners and The Half Cuts taking out Nett Winners. Everyone had an absolute blast, and we hope to see many people return for future golf events. A big thankyou to the sponsors of the day, Newsomes Tyres, Rockhampton Jockey Club Callaghan Park, D.C. Motors, Pat O’Driscoll Real Estate, AGA Windscreen Replacement Service and the White Family. Upcoming events – Saturday 5th November - Rodeo Association Fundraiser Golf Day, 2 person Ambrose competition. 9am Tee off. $15 per person with lunch included. All are welcome. Wildlife Matters By Trish Mathers - Phone 04005 91504 A couple of nights ago we picked up an adorable little swamp wallaby who came into care because her mum had been (sadly) hit by a car and killed. The joey however is really healthy, weighing just over 1kg, she is on 5 hourly feeds around the clock. She is fully furred and hops around a little. We named her ‘River’. We have had a few joeys come in lately. A couple were grey kangaroos who have since gone to their new homes in Gladstone., one of whom was nearly blonde in colour, which is very unusual for a grey kangaroo. We cannot release grey kangaroos here because mobs just don’t occur in Mount Morgan, even though they are not too far out of town. Finding carers who can take and release grey kangaroos are often difficult. They must be raised in a group (mob),as they have very close family bonds and rely on each other for survival.

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video

A crisis of conscience can happen to anyone; even the toughest among us... Even a globally infamous professional hitman can develop scruples. Francis (Sam Rockwell) has exceptional skills; well more like innate gifts really, that make him incredibly good at what he does...the best in fact. And he likes to dance. But being so good, so involved; having done what he’s done for so long, and knowing all that he knows...The how, the when, the where and most importantly, who... His past is not just going to allow Francis to walk away and start a new life. Meanwhile, Martha (Anna Hendrick) is having troubles of her own. She’s a fine-looking girl with surprisingly good hand-to-eye coordination and a quirky sense of humour. She is highly intelligent with a slightly off-beat personality... A smart, friendly, attractive, unique young lady.

But despite doing her very best and being prepared to put everything she has out there, unlucky-in-love Martha just can’t seem to find her There are many ups and downs being a wildlife carer. It is “MR RIGHT”.

wonderful to raise and release birds, wallabies, possums and other beautiful native animals that come into care, and we are very blessed to be able to have such close contact with these creatures, and to discover their personalities and intelligence. Just as humans all have different personalities, so do animals. Even baby birds quickly show how different they are from their siblings. On the downside, however, we have to deal with a good many of them dying or having to be euthanized because their injuries are too severe.

When they do bump into each other these two off-the wall characters instantly connect and sizzle; although to Martha, Francis does seem really, really different from other guys...And he has a strange sense of humour, always making up jokes about just having had to kill some guy in the carpark or such. But he likes to dance.

All the while the chase is bubbling over...Crime cartels, clients, the police and some guy who says he’s from the FBI (the always brilliant Last year we bought 2 brand new heat pads, which we use to Tim Roth), all on Francis’ trail, all armed and dangerous.

keep little babies warm, however when we got them out to use this winter neither of them would work! Very annoying, especially when they are something we rely heavily on. On the upside of this, we have found a brilliant product which will keep little joeys warm without heat. We still rely on heated pads to keep baby or injured birds warm however, and also larger injured animals. Plus, we cover food and vet expenses out of our own pockets.

It’s only a matter of time before Martha gets caught up in the web that these spiders are casting at her new beau, not to mention bullets. If they can survive being hunted down, tied up, beaten and shot at - they might just make a killer couple... Francis could turn out to be her “MR RIGHT”. After all, he does like to dance.

With costs skyrocketing wildlife carers are finding it MR RIGHT is Rated MA for ‘Strong Violence and Coarse Language’, increasingly difficult, as we receive no support from the but personally I think that an ‘M’ rating would be more appropriate. government nor the RSPCA. Many thanks to those people It’s 1 hour and 35 minutes long and it’s a blast! who do support wildlife caring, it is very much appreciated! Belly-laugh, funny, full-on action, and a great story well played. MR RIGHT, an Orange Dot Movie...Loved it!

In Mick’s Memory Submitted by Karin Blake Well another year has come by. It is now time that we will be remembering Mick Blake who passed away on the 4th November, 2015. On the 11th of September 2016 my family, myself and friends of the family came together on this special day at about 2pm to put Mick’s ashes to rest on the place he so loved. The boys built a beautiful gazebo for sitting out the back under and a rock monument where Mick’s plaque rests for everyone to see. A small distance away we planted a bauhinia to show our love and under this tree we put a pair of Black Headed Caiques which passed away from the cyclone last year. On top of them we put some of Mick’s ashes and then covered it with a bit of dirt and some more ashes. The boys toasted him and put some beer over the dirt in the hole for him to have. We all took turns in putting some of his ashes there and said our final goodbyes and happy travelling for him. What a sad day this was as the next day would have been his 52nd birthday. He is now out back in the orchard watching over this as well as not too far from his beloved Blue and Gold Macaws. He will always be missed by us all and we will never forget him but remember all that he did for us and others. He was a great inspiration to a lot of people especially in the bird world. He was a very beloved Husband and Father and loved breeding and keeping his birds and also his cooking. This was his greatest passion to be able to talk about birds and breed them. Also make up new recipes which he just loved to share with others. He lived a life that he totally enjoyed and I will miss him greatly. So RIP Mick.

Fond Memories of the Technical College By Sean Cox

Let’s take a trip back in time! For many Mount Morganites, high school days were filled with fun times where endless memories were made and fondly remembered. The Mount Morgan High School building, which once served as the town’s Technical College, was erected in 1908 and remains one of the town’s most iconic structures. This two-storey structure, which towers over the township, was created with 79 locally made red bricks at a cost of £3868 equating to $7736. Local education at the Technical College was carried out until 1964. Night classes were also terminated that same year. My Great-Grandfather, Col Heberlein, completed his apprenticeship at the Mount Morgan Technical College where he became a fitter and turner at the Mine. Col was born in 1927; the same year that 11 schools were operating in Mount Morgan which made a total student population of around 2000 pupils. The Mount Morgan High School was established in February 1912; being one of six high schools to be established in Queensland that year. Prior to the opening of the Technical College, the first Technical College classes were held in 1900. These classes took place in the old School of Arts building which was burnt down on Anzac Day in 1923.

According to Frank Golding, at that time, there were only eight students who were enrolled in these particular classes. In later times, one pastime for students at the Mount Morgan High School was visiting the little shop which is situated across the road from the school and still stands today. During my grandmother’s (Denice Bosomworth) time at Mount Morgan High School, all of the students liked to cross the road to the little store on Central Street to buy their treats. Grandma, in particular, remembers Mrs. Gray and all of the lovely lollies which she had for sale at her shop. My grandma’s younger sister, Leonie Wilson, also remembers going across the road to purchase treats at the

time when Ray and Ros Forshaw were running the store. At that same time, there was a Tuck Shop operating within the High School. Leonie recalls purchasing lunch from the Tuck Shop. “I fondly remember chatting to Mrs. Elsie Maher and Mrs. Joan Ward during my years at the High School”, she said. Many Mount Morganites have gone through the Mount Morgan High School; all having differing accounts and stories to share. But each and every one of them remembers the little store across the road as the school and the shop were intertwined; with the students being the common link. Check out next Argus for the Awards Night recipients and full write up

The High School is holding their Annual Awards Night Ceremony on the 3rd of November at 6pm. A wonderful way to end the year and to recognise all the hard work the students have put in throughout all their subjects. Good Luck to everyone.
