MOUNT MORGAN SHOW HAILED RESOUNDING SUCCESS After being forced to cancel the 2020 Show due to Covid-19 and overcoming last minute obstacles, Saturday’s 2021 Mount Morgan Show has been hailed as a resounding success with fun and entertainment for the whole community. Over 1400 patrons were able to enjoy full pavilions of craft, art, photography, school children exhibits, horticulture, farm and garden, cooking, poultry and caged birds, horse events and a great turn out of cattle that ran the whole day. The Showman's Guild (Showies) did the event proud with their showbags, rides and typical show fair (like dagwood dogs) and over 50 stall holders with various products helped to make the day enjoyable for patrons. The Show was officially opened by the Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tony Williams who also presented the Mount Morgan 2021 - 2022 Showgirl Crystal Littlejohn with her Sash. The Mayor congratulated Crystal on her appointment as did Michael Rowe on behalf of the Show Society. Free entertainment was provided for Show goers by First Light Entertainment who had stilt walkers,

Circus Workshops and a Fire Show, Eljay Freestyle Entertainment Shows, RESTA Reptile and Nature Shows, Curly Lou’s Twisted Balloons and an Animal Nursery. The day culminated in an awesome fireworks display which was wholly sponsored by Heritage Minerals the company planning to re-start operations at the Mount Morgan Mine. Secretary of the Show Society, Heather Barker, said the success of the day could not have been achieved without the support of the small but very dedicated committee, the volunteers that helped on the day, the Judges and Stewards, who give untiringly of their time, the SES who so expertly managed the gate, the Rodeo Committee who ran the canteen, the generous sponsors, the Rockhampton Regional Council and last, but definitely not least, the Mount Morgan community. Mrs Barker also thanked the competitors and exhibitors many of whom come back year on year and are already planning their return on the second Saturday in August in 2022.

MOUNT MORGAN

Please contact QLD Police or QLD Health should you have questions. The advice from when COVID first started is still the best and stands true today – The virus needs people to travel so if everyone stops the virus dies. Simple really.

Greetings from the Mount Morgan Police. You will be seeing us conducting more static speed enforcement along James Street, those that stick to the speed limit have nothing to fear. The speed limit of 60 is already generous for a small, densely populated area so please ensure you adhere to this limit.

We are seeing an increase of street disturbances in the town. Please remember to keep your hands and your foul language to yourself. There are ample offences under legislation you can (and will) be charged with for assaulting and abusing other people. If you are involved in ongoing disputes, there are services available to you from the QLD government including mediation and counselling. Again, I am not going to quote phone numbers or sources because you know where the hospital is and where the Police station is and where the hub is - It’s up to you to reach out.

POLICE NEWS

COVID is making a comeback so please ensure you practise social distancing and good hygiene (particularly hand washing) wherever possible. Make yourself familiar with current hotspots around the nation, especially if you are travelling. I find a quick google search will usually lead you to the correct and most up-to-date information. I won’t bother quoting any links or sources here because it changes so often. Page 4

Have your say on proposed Mount Morgan rail trail

“Rail trails support active, healthy lifestyles and contribute to environmental preservation and management. “They also create diversity in local economies and encourage the growth and creation of small businesses in hospitality and tourism.” Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the potential for this project was identified by the Mount Morgan community through the development of the Advancing Mount Morgan Strategy. “One of the key areas identified in this strategy is the need to unlock the tourism potential of Mount Morgan’s multiple natural and historic assets, and projects like the rail trail could do just that,” Cr Rutherford said.

Council is inviting residents to submit their feedback on a potential alignment for the proposed multi-use rail trail between Mount Morgan and Gracemere. A feasibility study for the trail is currently underway, which is proudly funded by the Queensland Government. Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams encouraged everyone to put forward their thoughts. “The project is only in concept stage at the moment, so it’s a fantastic time to get involved and really have your say,” Mayor Williams said. “Council Officers have been working with our contractor – Burchills Engineering Solutions – to create a preferred route for the trail. “We would like to hear your opinion on the potential route, as well as what you would like to see if the trail goes ahead. “There are a few ways to give feedback, either come along to one of our community information Page 6

“I do want to emphasise that no decision has been made at this stage about whether or not the project will go ahead, so if you have a strong opinion that is something we absolutely want to know.” stalls being held in Gracemere, Mount Morgan and Rockhampton - or complete the survey online.” Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the project was part of the Queensland Government’s $14 million investment to support local governments to plan, design and build rail trails. “We are investing in rail trails on disused railway corridors to encourage walking, bike riding and horse riding, by making active transport an easier and enjoyable choice for more Queenslanders,” Mr O’Rourke said.

MOUNT MORGAN CITIZEN’S CLUB Working Bee: A big thank you must go out to those who came along to the working bee at the Soldiers Rooms last month. The room downstairs was absolutely crammed full of random bits and pieces, with a lot of items beyond repair and taking up space, and upstairs there were fridges not working, etc. After multiple trailer loads taken to the dump, the spaces have become useable once again, and along the way, we discovered lots of historical gems. From hobby horses and old signs, to the original balustrading, RSL memorabilia and lots of louvres! We hope to be able to bring most items back to their former glory and reinstate these significant parts of Soldiers Rooms history to where they can be appreciated by all.

After the dust had settled, there were still items no longer needed, and a call out was made for people to come and collect in exchange for a small donation. Though we had a reasonable turnout of dedicated helpers, we hope in future that more members are available to assist to make the job easier and we can achieve so much more. Go Team!! Membership: To join the Mount Morgan Citizens Club Inc @ The Soldiers Rooms, forms can be collected/returned to the Mount Morgan Post Office, or via email at mountmorgansoldiersrooms@ gmail.com. To keep up to date please like and follow “Mount Morgan Soldiers Rooms” Facebook page, or join our meetings on the last Sunday of the month in the Soldiers Rooms,

at 18 Morgan Street. Next meeting 10:30am on Sunday, 29 August. Hall Bookings Please call our Bookings Officer Angela, on 0419 605 662 for rates and availability. Submitted Secretary.

DAWSON’S DO AND CHARGE Dawson Green along with his wife, June, moved to Mount Morgan 14 years ago from Rockhampton, when they bought their first home, which Dawson has been renovating slowly since then. “Mount Morgan is a lovely place to live, we love the peace and quiet up here,” they said. Dawson worked as a plant operator in the mining industry for 10 years before working in the carpentry industry which he has for the last 5 years, working full time. “My experience as a lay carpenter has grown since

being employed by a builder in the Rockhampton area. He started out as a small business and now he employs 9 people”, Dawson said. “Doing small home repairs is my speciality, such as, replacing step treads or fixing them if they don’t need replacing, painting, fixing gates that have fallen off their hinges, doors that are too old or hard to close, the list goes on … but I like doing patch and paint, especially fibro walls as they are a challenge, being difficult to patch but my builder friend is a great teacher, so I can make a wall look like nothing happened there in the first place”, he said. Dawson is 68 years young and shows no signs of slowing yet. He loves his job and is looking forward to helping Mount Morgan home owners maintain their homes. Dawson is a local bloke helping local home owners with home repairs. Please check out ‘Dawson’s Do & Charge’ advertisement in this Argus for his phone number if you need help with your home maintenance. LIBRARY NEWS

Do you have or know any pre-school aged children? If you do – great news! Rockhampton Regional Libraries have restarted First Five Forever programming at all libraries. What is First Five Forever programming and why is it important? Studies show that the human brain develops fastest in the first five years of life. Simple things like talking, singing, reading and playing promote healthy brain development and the impact of these activities lasts a lifetime. At these fun and free programs children will sing songs, learn rhymes and listen to stories. Parents and caregivers will learn techniques and strategies for helping their children to learn through play at home. What do children learn at these sessions? Baby Rhyme Time is a fun and interactive activity for baby and caregiver. Songs, nursery rhymes and finger plays are used to help baby develop early literacy skills and prepare them for speaking and (eventually) reading. Story Time is lots of fun for 2 – 5 year olds. Stories, songs and rhymes build children’s vocabulary, compassion and word-recognition. Learning to sit and listen to a leader also helps to prepare children for school. Baby Rhyme Time and Story Time are running fortnightly on Monday mornings at the Mount Morgan Library. Please call the Rockhampton Regional Library Administration Office on 4936 8043 between 8:30am – 5:00pm to book your spot. If Monday’s don’t fit your schedule, there are plenty of sessions available at other Rockhampton Regional Libraries. Rockhampton Regional Libraries are located in Mount Morgan, Gracemere, South Rockhampton and North Rockhampton. It is free to become a library member. For more information, please call the Mount Morgan Library on 4936 8169 or the Rockhampton Regional Library Administration Office on 4936 8043.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review in the company of two starstruck, gormless local lads from the pub, with a dufflebag full of MDMA and But PIXIE wants out of this a body in the boot. Hot on their tails smalltown existence. She wants are the deadly gangster priests to chase her dream of attending in full cassock regalia, loaded to Art School in San Francisco, and exact repentance, as well as a for that she’ll need some serious ruthless hitman who is really quite money. Dad doesn’t want to a cool dude, a philosopher with a part with PIXIE so he won’t help. wicked sense of humour. Brimming with the confidence of youth, not knowing what is Over their heads? Can PIXIE pit impossible, PIXIE hatches a plan her wits against these odds and that is as bold and daring as it is win? deadly and just plain crazy. Another little gem within this film

PIXIE Both Director Barnaby Thompson and his son Preston who wrote this hilariously entertaining story must have been channelling Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriquez AND Guy Ritchie while creating this crazy little uber-violent gangster comedy called PIXIE. Worth seeing for the fantastic Irish scenery alone, this film is wicked fun. PIXIE (Olivia Cooke) has had an unusual upbringing in the small west-Irish town of Sligo. Her stepdad (Colm Meaney) is a smalltime gangster and single father who loves his kiddies. To say that her step-brother and PIXIE do not get on though, would be an understatement. It’s all they can do not to attack each other with bared fangs and talons on sight. The local lads are in awe of her, afraid to get too close but fascinated by the rumours which abound about the special photos she takes in her rooms.

All of the illegal drug supply and distribution in the region is run by a syndicate of gangster (yet devout) priests and nuns led by kingpin Father Hector (Alec Baldwin). PIXIE is going to hit Father Hector where it hurts, robbing him of his drugs and thereby funding her artistic future ambitions in America... Simple! What could go wrong? Of course whatever can go wrong usually does and it’s not long before we find PIXIE on the run across the wild Irish countryside

is the appearance of the always lovable Irish comedian Dylan Moran (BLACK BOOKS), as dry and darkly funny as ever. During the final climactic scenes of PIXIE the dominant thought was “Wow, now this is something that I’ve never seen before!”, nor did I ever think that I would. Rated MA15+ for “strong violence”, PIXIE runs for just over an hour and a half. PIXIE, genuinely funny, shocking and charming...Loved it!
