GENEROSITY UNDERLYING THEME FOR FESTIVAL

While the 2022 Golden Mount Festival theme was Gold Rush, an underlying theme was the generosity shown by businesses and community members towards the Festival. This generosity was

demonstrated by stallholders who made donations as they were leaving and by the winner of the Best Overall Float - Dick Needham (Country Club for Accommodation) who donated the prize money from

his win from this category back to the organisation. Country Club for Accommodation was one of two sponsors for the procession.

GOLD IN THEM THERE HILLS

Saydi-Lee Coombes proved that there was definitely gold still left on the Mount

Golden Mount Festival President, Mr Gavin Finch said he was extremely happy with the day. “For a comeback, it went really well. We had many obstacles to overcome in a short time to make sure that we were able to hold a festival, but we did it,” he said. “In the leadup to the event, we were blown away with the generosity of our sponsors - many of whom are coming back on board in 2023 - hopefully taking the festival back to a full program. “The members were absolutely brilliant,” he said. “A lot of effort goes into any event, and this work is tripled when you have a short time frame to organise it,” he said. “We were pleased with the positive feedback received over the weekend.”

The return of the traditional Golden Mount Festival and the first twilight rodeo are two of the factors that led to the success of the 2022 Mount Morgan Rodeo held on the traditional Golden Mount Festival weekend. Nominations were down this year due to the simultaneously Page 4

held Road to Longreach Rodeo (now a regular two-day event). However, there was still plenty of action from early afternoon into the night. The quality of the rodeo stock for all events, particularly the blueMOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

ribbon events - the Open Bull and Saddle rides - meant that riders failed to post scores. Other events winners BARREL RACE: 1 - Jordyn O’Toole, 2 - Jodee Aylward, 3 - Ayda Continued on Page 5 11 - 25 MAY 2022

In past years the Golden Mount Festival Association runs this event, but this year the association was approached by the State High School P&C to run the event after Festival organisers decied to run with the Saturday only for the first year back after the pandemic. P&C President, Mr Daryl Jacobson said he was happy to keep the breakfast at the dam tradition alive. “The people, atmosphere and breakfast were all wonderful,” he said.

Lorikeets ready to fly

Mount Morgan’s Lorikeets are set to fly, despite a loss against Dawson Valley Drovers at Newman Oval on Saturday. Due to there not being enough Reserve Grade teams for a competition, the Lorikeets are playing against A-Grade teams. The final score of 46-12 does not reflect the effort and good plays put in by the Lorikeets. Try scorers were Layne Gibson and Brayden Wilkes-Hayden. Tyler Toby converted one of the tries. The Lorikeets take on the Rocky Colts at Yeppoon on 14 May.

AMBROSE WINNERS

The Mount Morgan Rotary Club has replaced the old deteriorated sign with this new sign. The sign provides updated tourist information and iconic photos of historic Mount Morgan. The Rotary Club has been supportive of the local community for almost 66 years since chartering in 1956. All club members and their partners put in a big effort in providing breakfast and lunch for the many locals and visitors at the recent Golden Mount Festival. It was a big day, but everyone enjoyed the challenge which will generate funding for future community projects. The Club wishes to thank everyone who supported the Rotary Club stall at the festival and also

congratulates the Festival organisers for such a successful day. Pictured above with the newly installed visitor sign are Tania Ricks and Brian Glover.

VOLUNTEER REGISTER

Do you have a passion for volunteering, but are unsure of how you can get involved? A new register has been designed that will enable Mount Morgan volunteers to be matched with organisations.

Despite a low turn-out, the Mount Morgan Golf Club’s two-person Ambrose played on Monday, 2 May was well received by players. Winners were Shai Pearce and Lance Antcliff (pictured) with 62 and a quarter nett. Runners up were Peter Housman and Steve Bryant with 63 Nett. Nearest to the pins were awarded to Paul Dobson (non-golfer), Shai Pearce (ladies) and John Nash (Open) Page 6

The concept of a volunteer register was raised at the recent Mount Morgan community meeting and it was decided that this would be a good project to instigate in Mount Morgan. Long-term community volunteer, John Tuxworth with the help of community members has developed a registration form for people who wish to volunteer. \ All you need to do is contact John on 0429 055 165 and register your name and preferred voluntary role.

MOUNT MORGAN MUNDAGUTTA My name, is Lee-Ann Broome and I am sure everybody in the Mount Morgan recognises my name as I was born and bred on the Mount. My mother Mavis Joan Broome (Lamb) is a Wattaburra woman and my dad’s, Mervyn Charles Broome, is Taribelang Bunda in the Bundaberg area.

aim of reducing drug and alcohol and crime issues in the town. The main aim is to listen to the youth and younger generations and what programs they would like in the community. Monthly meetings will keep the program moving. Article submitted by Lee-Ann Broome

I left Mount Morgan around 1990 and moved to Rockhampton before moving onto Bundaberg where I had five children. I began to study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care which I have totally enjoyed and I’m very passionate about my culture. Then, after all my kids grew up, I moved up to Townsville and worked in Mental Health for six years. I returned home in November 2021 to a job with CQ Health as Aboriginal Advanced Health Worker in Mental Health and working with communities to build relationships between services in the Rockhampton and surrounding areas. On returning to CQ I visited Mount Morgan, my old hometown, where I was saddened to see the lack of services and programs for our young people. I had spoken to a few of Gangulu Elders, Aunty Rosie Toby, Uncle Philip Toby and Aunty Lyn Blucher to see what they would like to see back in the Mount, and how we can work together to make something happen for the community of Mount Morgan. I spoke to Hope Carson from the Ambulance Service in Mount Morgan, and she was in the process of looking at how to engage and support our youth in town.

Pictured at the first Mount Morgan meeting in the QAS Office are Justin, Philippa Toby, Aunty Rosie Hoffman, Terri Cunningham, Daisy Dodd, Helen Roberts (back) and front Lee-Ann Broome, Uncle Philip Toby, Aunty Lyn Blucher, Donna Anderson. Photo courtesy Mount Morgan Argus.

Hope and I brainstormed on how we could engage and support the Mount Morgan community for our youth to get something happening. A “Teams” meeting was arranged in February with many services coming on board to support Mount Morgan, with the Elders and other stakeholders in Rockhampton and Mount Morgan area attending. This meeting had a great turnout, with about 30 services represented, and willing to introduce programs, fun days, youth days feedback days, movie nights, etc. The result has been Mundagutta Mount Morgan Youth Social, Wellbeing Program Committee, with funding approved by the Community Based Crime Action Committee Funding Application through Queensland Police Service. Rockhampton Regional Council has provided the venue, and all programs will be for the benefit of all youth from Mount Morgan. The committee will work closely with CQ Health’s CQ Connect Youth program, and in conjunction with services in Mount Morgan and Rockhampton with the 11 - 25 MAY 2022

LIBRARY NEWS It’s nearly time for one of the highlights of the library calendar! National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual event held in Australia and New Zealand where libraries, schools and childcares read the same book at the same time. This year, National Simultaneous Storytime is on 25 May. NSS is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate reading, storytelling and Australian literature. The book chosen for this year’s event is Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. Josh Pyke is an Australian author and singer, whose other books include Chatterpuss, A banana is a banana and The incredible runaway snot. Ronojoy Ghosh is a talented illustrator and his work can be seen in popular children’s books I’m Australian too, Ollie and the wind and No place like home. Why not check out some of their other great works next time you come to the library? Last year 1.98 million people

participated in National Simultaneous Storytime! This year you can be a part of this amazing event by attending a special storytime at Gracemere Library, South Rockhampton Library or North Rockhampton Library on 25 May at 10:00am. •

Even if you can’t attend a library event, you can still get into the spirit of National Simultaneous Storytime. There are many ways that you can be involved, such as Reading your favourite book with a child

Country Kitchens Workshops Hello everyone. For several years now the Queensland Country Women’s Association has incorporated a Healthy Eating Programme that we call ‘’Country Kitchens’’. This programme was sponsored by Queensland Health and is also linked to Health and Wealth Being Australia. It showcases many factors including sit less move more, have more fruit and vegetables in your diet, showcasing how much sugar is in drinks and how portion size is a factor. But it also shows you how you can enjoy the foods you like by using different ingredients but still having the same taste but in a healthier way. For example using alternatives in a dish that provides

Last year we held a very successful workshop and the ladies learnt about different things such as the amount of sugar in drinks and the effect that added sugar can have on a diet. They took part in cooking different dishes such as muffins; Frittatas, stir-fry and they had a lot of fun. We even had some very happy little girls attend and we talked on how it was so easy but enjoyable. The recipes also include chocolate brownies, sausage rolls and many other amazing dishes. Each year the Q.C.W.A. has a product of study and a country MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

Our product of study this year is ‘’Pineapple”. We will also be making a surprise item on the day. Our Mount Morgan Branch gained eight new members from the Workshop we held last year and several of the members will be there for this workshop. There are many things we can learn no matter who we are or our age, we can have a great time along the way. The program also has lunch box recipes and different recipes for all diets including gluten free. We have recipes for the kids including muffins, vegie trains and banana dolphins. We also have hands on activities such as Felt Fruit that can be made. We will need numbers for the workshop by 16 May so the ingredients can be purchased for the day. Attendees will cook three dishes on the day with everything being provided. THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review GHOSTBUSTERS - AFTERLIFE Who you gonna call? “ Back in the eighties most households owned just three video cassettes and GHOSTBUSTERS was one of them.” Jason Reitman was talking about the love people felt for these two movies and the permanent place they held in their hearts. Jason’s dad Ivan Reitman, the director of GHOSTBUSTERS 1 and 2, imbued both films with a magic that was going to be almost impossible to recapture. Dan Aykroyd stepped up and wrote GHOSTBUSTERS 3. The studio loved it and was all set to back it and start production but Bill Murray, stating his dislike of sequels, refused to come on board. Dan’s script instead became the storyline for THE GHOSTBUSTERS video game and he still claims this to be the official No.3 today. We’ll skip straight over that 2016 GHOSTBUSTERS attempt which had nothing at all to do with either Ivan or Jason Reitman, nor the original cast and crew. Then an idea came to Jason about how to begin the story that could become the third movie. He began to write, remembering and trying to recapture the magic that had made the first two movies so

special. He brought his dad into the fold to assist and advise, and when the script was finally ready he gathered up as many of the original eighties production, photography and special effects crews as he could find. They set to work with Jason as director and his dad Ivan Reitman as producer to create the next, and hopefully not the last chapter in the fantastic, original GHOSTBUSTERS universe. Through love, reverence, hard work, and with some gifts from yesteryear a wonderful movie started to take shape. Finally it was ready to be revealed to the world but unfortunately a certain virus got in the way. GHOSTBUSTERS3: AFTERLIFE wasn’t released until November 2021, and it was both a critical and financial success. The bittersweetness of it all for Jason Reitman was that he got to see his father Ivan revel in their baby’s release and triumph, giving new life to the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise - but then he lost his dad. Sadly, Ivan Reitman died just three months later in February of this year. This next GHOSTBUSTERS:

Shopping Spree in Morgan Street

The thought of time travel has inspired many a writer since the late 1880s when the Edward Page Mitchell story The Clock that Went Backward appeared in the New York Sun. While H. G. Wells is considered the “father” of time travel because of The Time Machine’s publication in 1895, it was Spanish writer Gaspar who wrote El Anacronopete (meaning something that flies backward through time) who is more likely to claim the first “time travel” honours. H. G. Wells was certainly the literary inventor of the time machine. Throughout history, many fiction writers have tried their hand at writing about “time travel” including, surprisingly enough, Mark Twain who wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, before The Time Machine, but after Gaspar’s publication. Since these early days a host of writers – Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, Audrey Niffenger and of course, Diana Gabaldon – have all fantasised and been inspired by the concept of time travel. With the conclusion of the shopfront series, it seemed reasonable to finish with a shopping spree on Morgan Street, but with a time-related twist. The creator of the interesting series and Sydney resident, Catherine McIntosh (inset image), whose family connections to Mount Morgan date back to the 1880s, was given the following scenario – Page 14

“You have been given an opportunity to travel back in time for a shopping experience on Morgan Street for one day. You have ten pounds in your pocket. Time travel makes sure you have the appropriate clothing, footwear and hairdo for that time period”. What time period in Mount Morgan’s history would you travel back to for a shopping expedition and why? I’d like to land in the pictured 1913 Morgan Street image from the State Library of Queensland because I’m familiar with those shopfronts from my research. Also, my ancestors, the Stubbs family, lived in Mount Morgan then, in Rockhampton Road (now James Street), so I could learn about the type of life they led. How would you explain your presence in town? I’d say I’m visiting from out of town – which is true, only that I’m from another century! Would you go back to a specific time of the year? Christmas time would be fun, with homemade street and shopfront decorations and local bands playing Christmas carols on street corners. There were so many bands back then, such as the Mount Morgan Brass Band, the Salvation Army Band, the Mount Morgan String Band and the Pipers’ Band. Maybe I’d see my great-grandfather, Upsall Stubbs, playing in one of the bands. Continued on Page 15

Mount Morgan In Pictures...from Page 14 How would you describe your time travel outfit? The long, beige skirt and long-sleeve, white blouse are stifling in this hot December climate. The widebrimmed brown hat is uncomfortable. Besides, I never wear brown and beige colours. And these white canvas button boots are slowing me down. How would you describe your 1913 hair style? My hair is in a bun and held in place with lots of scratchy bobby pins. Is there any particular store on Morgan Street that would attract you more than others? The opulent department store, James Stewart & Co., on the corner of Morgan and East Streets. It’s the place to be! Imagine meeting the owner, James Stewart there - how amazing! What would you bring back to the future in your shopping bag and pockets? Jewellery, preferably of Mount Morgan gold; a writing set embossed with gold leaf; J. H. Lundager picture postcards; a collection of King George V stamps; ruby red glassware; and a music box. Ten pounds could buy a lot in 1913. What would be your least favourite shop to visit? The Central Queensland Meat Export Company near Central Street because I don’t eat meat. Could you paint the readers a picture of what you see around you? I’m standing outside the jeweller’s shop, S. W. Jones, near Morgan Lane, whose banner reads, ‘Bargains in beautiful things’. I can see horse-drawn carriages and motor vehicles. It’s busy. Women are generally dressed like me and men are in three-piece suits and hats. I just saw the headmistress of Mount Morgan Girls’ and Infants’ State School, Miss Hardy, walk into the bookstore, Lee & Humphreys, wearing her trademark black Victorian dress. I’ve written articles about her in the Argus. And there’s the tailor, Sidney Gray, walking by. I recognise him from his caricature.

What messages would you have for her, assuming she accepted you as a time traveller? I would tell her that I knew her five children when they were old. My mother, Lilyan, was named after her in her memory (with different spelling) and I share her middle name. I would advise her to take special care of her health in the winter of 1915 so she lives a long life with her husband, Upsall, and her children. Do you have any insights from your time travelling? Time is your most valuable asset – make the most of it! Advertisement

Where will you get lunch during your busy day? At Mrs Annie Sparkes’ grocery and produce store near Morgan Lane or the People’s Cash Store near Central Street. What Mount Morgan ancestor would you like to have afternoon tea with and where? My maternal great-grandmother, Lillian Stubbs (pictured). We don’t have a lot of information about her or photos of her because she died young in 1915 from pneumonia. The meeting place would be at Mrs J. Winter’s Arctic Refreshment Rooms near Morgan Lane. What would you order? A cup of tea and a slice of cinnamon cake (a popular cake back then). 11 - 25 MAY 2022
